Sabrina

My eyes widen when I see that it’s not some animal below, but instead Cosette - walking in from the orchard with a basket over her arm. I smile a little, watching her.

“Oh, truffles,” Max murmurs, likewise peering over the edge of the balcony.

I look up at him. “What?”

“I think Cosette has truffles,” he says, narrowing his eyes slightly like he’s trying to see better.

I frown, jealousy rising in me at the ridiculousness of Alpha eyesight. Stupid Alphas get all the perks. “You can see that?”

He smiles, shifting his gaze back to me. “I can’t quite see it, but it’s a good guess. It’s the time of year for it and last year at this time they made these amazing truffle pastries. I hope they come back.”

I look down at Cosette, curious. “I think that’s the girl who brought me dinner last night. Do you know her?”

My cousin walks slowly back towards what must be the kitchen entrance in that wandering way I’ve seen a thousand times that means her mind is totally elsewhere – off in some im

Sabrina I nod eagerly, brows raising. My wolf howls and hops in my soul, liking gossip time very much.Cosette’s face falls from happiness into suspicion. “Wait, why did you bring me up? Sabrina! They’re not supposed to know you know me!”“They don’t,” I say, smiling with abandon. “I didn’t bring you up. Max did.”“No,” she breathes, her shoulders slumping as she clutches the uniform to her chest, wrinkling it in a way that she would otherwise never allow. “He…he knows who I am!?”“Apparently,” I say, nodding. “We saw you walking in from the orchard with a basket of truffles –““You saw that!?” she squeaks, hands clenching in the fabric of her clothes. Suddenly she notices what she’s doing and loosens her fingers, hanging the little outfit up and starting to pull off her robe. “Where were you!?”“Up on the balcony,” I say, pointing up towards the roof. “I don’t know, some dining suite.”“Damn,” she whispers, shaking her head at me. “I can’t believe you went to one of the Prince’s din

Sabrina“Okay,” Cosette says softly, nodding to me, reading my expression and backing off.“And what about you,” I say, riled a bit. “Have you been practicing, like you’re supposed to?”She pales a little, swallowing hard. “Don’t talk about that, Sabrina.”“Or what, you’re afraid everyone is going to figure out that your pastries are so delicious because –““Sabrina!” Cosette snaps, her body tensing. “I’m sorry I brought it up, okay? I didn’t realize you were this averse to talking about it. But you don’t need to throw my own shame back at me just because I upset you.”I take a deep breath, my knee-jerk instinct to bite back at war with my realization that she’s right. I’m just being a brat, trying to show her who’s boss. But I don’t want to treat her like that.“I’m sorry,” I say, my head hanging. I shake it, utterly ashamed. I have to be tough and defensive with so many people in my life, but Cosette has never been one of them.“It’s okay,” Cosy says, petting a hand over my hair. “I

“Um!” I say, looking away, genuinely embarrassed. But I’m certainly not going to let him know I walked into the door. Better he just thinks I’m over-eager. “Yes!”He laughs a little, opening the other door and tilting his head inside as an invitation. “Well let’s get you started,” he murmurs, slipping his hands into his pockets and moving towards the reference desk. I smile as I fall into step at his side, looking around the library which is gorgeous in the dawn light, all golden and pink.“Yeah, I really like this time of day,” Oliver murmurs, glancing over at me before slipping behind the desk. “Really pretty.”I smile at him, nodding my agreement.“So,” he says, leaning over the desk towards me. “Starting where we left off yesterday?”I nod again, very eagerly this time, wanting those diaries in my hands right now. “With the books?” he murmurs, smirking at me. “Or with…”My eyes go wide with surprise when Oliver darts a finger between us. I burst out laughing, genuinely charmed. O

  • The Alpha Loves his Villainess   Chapter 25 - Translation

SabrinaI exhale slowly as I come to the end of the final page of the first diary, which has taken me a week to translate. I write out the final word in my own private script – a simple, tricky little way of encoding messages wherein I take the first two letters of the word and write them at the end instead of the beginning. It’s not a complicated code – it would take the casual reader only a few moments to unravel it – but it’s enough to confuse anyone glancing at my page, giving me just enough time to snatch my notes back if anyone is looking. These are for me, after all – no one else.Happiness and pride blooms within me as I write down Philomena’s final word, because now I’ve got the whole story of the first diary laid out before me. And while I still haven’t found the key that will allow me to unlock any spells that she’s encoded in the writing, this is the first step.Philomena was so clever in her writing and her tricks operate on many levels, which is why she’s my favorite. No

Sabrina My heart sings as my eyes move over the page, starting to understand, starting to see the spell come forward. I murmur it as it becomes clear, feeling the magic race through me, concentrating I my hands. I start to breathe fast, my heart pounding as I realize that it’s a fascinating spell for deft fingers – and a fucking powerful one which could have a thousand uses – Philomena probably used it for pick-pocketing but -“What the fuck…”My head flies up.Rhett stands before me, staring down at my desk, horrified.I stare back at him, lips parted, befuddled – my brain still half in the spell –His eyes flash and he growls, lurching towards me. “Why the fuck are your hands glowing!?”I gasp, my eyes darting back to my hands where they clutch the book – and he’s right – they’re fucking glowing from the inside out, my bones visible –I shriek, dropping the book, standing so fast that my chair skitters out behind me.Rhett snarls, his hand whipping out, grabbing me by the arm and ha

Sabrina“I’m all right,” I whisper to the librarian, taking my seat again.“Can I get you a glass of water?” Bachmann whispers. “You’re perfectly safe here, darling –““That’s okay,” I say, nodding, lifting my chin, pretending to be brave.Bachmann nods, stroking me softly on the back and standing, turning towards Oliver. “You stay for a bit while I make my report,” she says, pausing for a moment. “Be kind, Oliver,” she says, raising a brow significantly. Some part of me realizes that she’s telling him not to hit on me in this tender moment and inwardly I smirk. If Oliver feels similarly, he hides it well, nodding seriously to his boss as she strides away.I exhale slowly, honestly not sure if I want Oliver to stay or go. Because while I am shaken and could probably use a friend for a moment

I smirk at him, shrugging. “Why waste time? I can handle two at once.”Oliver tilts his head to the side, considering me. “Look at you, Betty. Juggling amateur librarians and royalty. Who knew you had it in you?”I just grin as my friend starts to turn away. “You want that glass of water, you just give me a shout!”“You’re supposed to whisper in libraries!” I call after him, laughing a little.A fervent shush from across the room has both of us laughing as I turn eagerly back to my book.***The rest of the afternoon in the library is a dream. I’m more careful this time, sorting through the first few spells of Philomena’s work, tucking my glowing hands beneath the desk as I finish the first one so no one can see. I mean, it’s not truly ideal to be working higher magics in such a public place, but what choice do I have? The bo

My movement has the desired effect for a moment – he blinks and takes a step back. “You know who exactly who I am.”His surprise doesn’t last long. Rhett leans towards me again, a growl rising in his throat. “You’re not the meek little bookworm you pretend to be,” he snaps. “With just a little tiny bit of fire magic? I watch as he shifts in to his usual calm demeanor – tucking his Lupa identity away, becoming again the hapless nice guy who is so helpful in the kitchen. “I told him not to.”Juliette turns her attention to me, eyes flaring. “Is that true, Cosette?”“Um,” I say, hesitating but then shrugging. SabrinaAnd I remember that he’s always known her name. And while that might be just him liking her pastries and being kind to the employees of this institution, that sort of thing means something to girls like Cosette who are so talented and so often overlooked.I remember back to the night I tried to poison Rhett –And the charm she used on the water – the rhyme so simple, but flexible enough that a powerful Pancibus like her could…could use it every day, bake it right into the bread…Bread that Max eats every morning and evening. My jaw drops when I realize that…Cosette has been protecting him. Protecting Max from any poisons that someone might slip into his food – into any of his food, as long as he eats her bread along with it. And more than that, she’s been boosting his health – everyone’s health who eats her pastri

We’re all well aware that this is a farce - I’m small enough and he’s big enough that if Rhett wanted this door shut it would be. But I play along, pushing hard, enjoying myself. “Your thesis statements are crap!”“They’re fantastic!”“You need me!” I give one final shove and the door gives, Rhett smirking at me on the other side.He looms over me and points a finger at my face. “You keep your little sparkly pink pen away from my work tonight, Spencer.”I wrinkle my nose at him, all of my teeth bared in a wide smile. “Just try
