I sat somberly in the school bus wrapped up in the deepest distress. I sat with my hands on my knees, looking occasionally about me as the shouts of all the kids at the rain hit my ears, making me all the more saddened. As the rains poured down the windows of the bus, so too did my eyes wet with tears, fall off my face, and down the floor of the school bus.
I remembered it all. It was the Jessica gang. Loiterers they were. But there were much worse. Terribly bullies they were. Jessica was better than boys even in the senior classes at her hobby. And her special target was me. She came across to me this morning with a shoulder tackle, knocking off the books and papers that where weighed on my arm.“Oops…sorry, can’t see you. You are quite small to be notice you know. You almost seem…invisible.”“How about you being blind?” I threw back at her, great scorn written on my face. I deeply regretted saying that the moment the words escaped my mouth, and she made me feel it.“Can anyone here see her?” she called, turning to the crowd that had gathered around me.There was no response as no one wanted to fall into this girl’s trap.“See, I’m not blind. You are microscopic.”There was a roar of laughter at her, well…most hilarious joke. Seeing that there was no use arguing with them, I picked up my things without a word and left the place, amidst the titter of the students gathered there.*****It happened again later that day in the interval, as I sat separate from the class, fearing more taunts and ridicule. I sat alone on the swing when Jessica’s crush came along. He was very handsome, but he didn’t like Jessica. He smiled at me each time we meet, and I secretly liked him too. Jessica had suspicions. And this was her main annoyance. She would have me dead if she ever caught us together.Despite disliking Jessica, Roshan was also afraid of her. It was clear from the abstracted gaze he gave her when she was speaking to him. He stuck with her, nonetheless, only when she made him to, in order not to annoy her. She was a holy terror in the entire school.Roshan came along the quadrangle and into the playground when I saw Jessica coming from the opposite direction. Fearing that she was coming to disrupt the little peace I had there, seated on the swing, I hurried backwards, towards the quadrangle and ran into the handsome face of Roshan. He gave me a broad smile that sent goosebumps all over me. I made my apologies, and at that moment, I felt something building in within me. Was it infatuation or was it love? I didn’t know at the moment. His smile was for a moment, and then his masked face returned, forcing out a fake frown as Jessica came across to us. She was accompanied, as always, by her bunch of loiterers.“What’s going on here?”“Oh! Just that…she bumped into me.”“Just that, Roshan?!” she asked, her eyes narrowing terribly. No wonder she was nearly worshipped by her own boyfriend.“Um…nothing else, just that…I feel she is a terrible jerk!”It was Roshan’s turn to look mean. Turning to me, he said in meanest manner he could ever assume. I knew it wasn’t real, but his words hit me.“Stay away from me, you parasite!”To Jessica, this was the most wonderful thing she had ever heard him say. She burst out laughing as my chest fell in shame, and I should say, pain. I wondered within me what I actually wanted from Roshan in his unexpectedly, cornered moment. But I felt that since he liked me, he should own up. Anyways, I knew it was too dangerous.Taking his arm, Jessica walked off behind me. I didn’t turn to see them, but I knew she was gazing at me with fury on her face.“Stay away from her Price charming.” That was Fiona, one of Jessica’s best friends. As though all they had said was not enough, Jessica, who had advanced a little forward in Roshan’s arm turned back to finish the torment.“See, I told you. You are an invisible, microscopic organism. Stay away from the young man and do not harm him, you sorcerer, or I will…”I didn’t let those words get out of her mouth in peace. No one should dare call me a witch and got away the same. I slapped her across the face and in no time, we were rolling along the corridor holding one another’s sleeves tightly. Students from all over the classes rushed out to see our brawl, for no one had ever seen the Almighty Jessica ever challenged, let alone beaten. I don’t know how far of we went, but we hit a door at the end of the corridor. This caused a stir among the students as they fled back into their classrooms. Looking above me with several of Jessica’s punches in my face, I saw the name, Principal on the door we had hit. Finally realizing the situation, and hearing his footsteps as he came out to open his office, I kicked Jessica off me as ran down the corridor as fast as I could.I got into the classroom safety but soon heard that the principal wanted to see me. I didn’t regret my actions, anyway. She started it all. Entering the office, I found Jessica on the right of the office with her head cocked and hands akimbo, and the Principal on his seat in the center of the office. The look on their faces was terrible to look at.“Caught fighting in the school, eh?”“She started it, Sir!” I retorted, with some heat.“Do not listen to her, Sir. She hit me first. Here!”She turned to the side of her face I had not seen before and revealed a deeply cut wound. I could swear solemnly at once that I never struck her so savagely.“You know what brutality means even in the constitution, right?” the principal asked, his eyes narrowing.“Yes Sir, but I assure you that I did no such harm to her.” I answered with concern on my face for the girl that was hurt.“Shut up, you witch!”“Quiet there, Jessica! Now leave my office right away.”“Daria, sit down. Tell me, what happened?”Tears rolled down my face as I complained to him how I have been brutally harassed by the Jezebel of a girl, Jessica. So shocked was he by my story that for some minutes after I was done he couldn’t yet find his words. Finally, after scribbling something on a note paper and putting it an envelop, he addressed me.“You should have told me earlier about your plight before deciding to use your fists. A fight with just about anyone is something we do not tolerate in the school and I keep by the school rules, and so should you. Here…” he said, handing me an envelop.I prayed hard it was not what I thought it would be.“It’s a suspension letter. Come back to my office after one week. Go!”The tears began to form, but I blinked them back quickly. The principal was only doing his duty, I thought.Coming out, I met Jessica at the door. I turned away from her, and she burst into a hearty laugh.“Bad news, huh?”“Jessica…” it was the principal calling. ‘Right on time’ I thought.I headed for my favorite spot in the playground and sat alone. I opened the letter and read the words, allowing my tears to fall upon them. Mother had pleaded with me not to get involved in a fight with anyone in school. How could I show her this?“Seems like you got suspended, huh?” Jessica again! “Tell you what? I wasn’t. Next time, don’t attempt to fight me or else you will receive the same result…” she said blandly, and then her eyes narrowed “…or even worse.” She laughed scornfully and departed.I cannot recall how long I stayed rooted at the spot. It is only at this moment that the bells I heard reechoed into my ears, making me realize how long I remained there.I faintly heard the rattle of the winds and the boom of thunder. Several of my friends did not bother to come to me in fear of the torture from the school bully. I had no idea what was going on as my head was in a whirl when a hand tapped me from behind.Reality crept in as I saw that the rain had started and my laps and shoes where out of the shade, and completely drenched in water. Turning around, I found the one person I never expected to see. Roshan.“I heard it all, girl. She’s so mean to everyone. I braved myself and ditched her.”It came to me as a thunderbolt. At first, I felt happy at the thought of having Roshan by my side, but then, as I thought of what that meant for my life of peace, I soon realized the danger.“Why the hell did you do that? Why have you come to me? Now, she will only seek revenge.”I walked out on him and made straight for the bus, amidst his apologies, all of which I paid little heed to. I loved him but couldn’t have him. I was chased out of school for him. I was beaten up and insulted because he kept his eyes on me. What a world, and what a day it has been!“Daria!”I stopped at his call, without turning my head.“He was wrong about you. The wound on her face, I gave that to her.”*****The bus had stopped at my destination, and many called out my name, but I had no idea what was going on. It was only when Sofia approached and nearly shoved me that I returned to reality. I dragged my bag as though it was one heavy luggage, as the baleful eye of the school driver glared down at me in half animal fury.“Get lost, creep,” was a voice from behind, as I was shoved out of the bus and into the mud on the street beyond. It was her again. Jessica Brown, the bully.“See you tomorrow,” she continued from the open window, and the bus drove away.I got up from the muddy floor, watching the bus drive away.“'See you tomorrow,'" her voice re-echoing in my ear. She knew I had been suspended. Where did she expect to see me? I bit my lips in pain and looked briefly at my wounded arm that just started to ache as the rain water hit it. I looked again at the bus in the distance as it turned right to the next street and disappeared.Tears fell in torrents. I was known at home and in the neighborhood as a girl of guts, but in front of this particular girl, I was a helpless mosquito caught in a net. Why was she always finding joy in hurting me?“Daria!”I turned around to find mum at the doorway. Oh no! I had been standing under the rain. I picked my fallen school bag, drenched with water, when the handle I held broke off, and I had to pick the bag off the muddy floor. I was halfway through that when mum came down to me across the driveway, a large umbrella in hand.“Sweetheart, why are you standing here under the rain? You are so soaked! Come in let me make you feel better.”She led me in and helped me take care of the ruined clothes in the balcony. I saw father’s face at the window as I entered. I wouldn’t bear meeting him. I just walked into my room coldly and slammed the door. Picking up a pin, I stabbed me palm with it and let the blood flow, the I had within flow away.I seemed to have lost a lot of blood in the attempt. For as the blood dripped from my palm, so too did the tears flow from my eyes. I lay on the bed wanting to die, crying out to my maker to take away my life, when gradually sleep took over my senses as the blood dripped off my hand and arm onto the floor next to it.I awoke in the hospital, feeling pain in my left arm as though I had a deep cut there. I tried to seat up when my face caught mum and dad who where seated, waiting for me to awake. I felt really bad about having treated them unfairly and shutting them out of a problem they had the right to know about. Their faces showed deep concern and much pain. It was as though I was the one who had the wound, but they were the ones feeling my pains, even more than I did. I looked at my bandaged arm for a minute or two, wondering what the hell happened to me in my sleep and how they got me here. “Daria. You are awake!” mother said, coming to hug me. “We were so worried. I have known you as someone who would take out an hour or so alone if you had an overwhelming problem, but you really scared us yesterday when you did not show up five hours later, nor did you open the door…” “Mother, father, I am so deeply sorry for keeping you both in the dark. I had someone in school who tried her best to bully
Despite having to still deal with the suspension and ultimately, expulsion from school, being alone at home, and the terrible human being that I found myself to be, things were getting better by the day. I had made admirals in school. Roshan was a perfect match. In spite of all the rumours going all round about me, Roshan made it a thing of duty to always see me, and we were nearly always together. I kept our relationship completely guarded, because I didn’t want my parents to know about us*****“Daria!” The one person who could ever call me at this time of the day was mother. Father generally never called after lunch, unless it was to play with me. I dropped my toys on the floor and ran towards the kitchen door, feeling that she was about to send me to get something from the store for dinner.“Daria, please, I want you to go over to Marcus’s store and get me some tomatoes for stew tonight. Be quick! The sun is about to set.”“Okay mum.”“Here, that’s three dollars. Now go.”I looke
Thunder claps resounded. Lightening flashes stretched themselves across the scorched sky, sending chills down the spine of many in Vermissa Valley. Adrenaline rushed in many veins, as fiery red waves of light in the darkened sky confirmed the one now prominent truth; the approaching end of human existence, which has been warned by the government, preached and prophesied by many religious organizations, and declared repeatedly by the news media was finally here. It was all dark and reality was bleak. The once scorched sky in the forenoon had become denser, the air around filling with debris of a strange and unknown substance. It was flaky, yet glittering. It was burnt. It looked like the ash from a wrecked kiln. Above it something else was falling. A gigantic planetary body, terrifying like a big monster, with all the strange debris emanating from it. ****** The burning body descended slowly down upon the valley. I was stunned by it. However, I was just a little girl. I was returning
I woke up in mother's arms, in a comfortable camp room in Pershore. What had happened and how it all happened, I could not remember, but I heaved a deep sigh of relief to see her. I wondered what sought of pain and suffering she would have undergone till this moment as I clearly remembered the mutter of my name that I heard amidst the rubble sometime ago. I pulled the hair from her face and gently tucked it behind her ear. She was fast asleep. It was so wonderful for me to see her chest rise and fall gently as she slept. This was someone I thought I would never see again. The face I now beheld was so beautiful. I could not resist the urge. I placed a kiss on her beautiful forehead and held her tighter to myself.I felt her tighten her hold on me too. I had totally forgotten, she was asleep. I felt bad about having woken her. She placed a soft kiss on my forehead that sent shivers through me. I loved mother. I looked into her blue eyes as a smile came across to me.“Daria,” said she wi
Father lay still on his back in the large surgical theatre. He was fast asleep when we came in, and had remained in that position for a long time. For a time, I thought he was dead. Then he began a slow, arhythmical breathing which was excruciatingly painful to listen to. I couldn’t bear to see him in that condition. I looked briefly into mother’s face. Her forehead was lined deeply and her brows were knitted with anxiety, but she passed her hand across to me and I took it. The hand was firm, assuring me of her love, care and assistance. The doctor walked into the room. He was a dark , shallow fellow with dark eyes. It seemed like he loved his profession more than all else, and despite having scary eyes, he tried his best to keep a calm, contained and caring expression to all patients that came across him. He wore comically big trousers, but his white shirt and laboratory coat were as white as snow, neat and we’ll ironed. I loved doctors."Sasha, Daria, it's good to see both of you,"
President Vilvardö shifted uneasily on the mattress, beads of sweat forming on his face. They totally soaked the sheets. So uncomfortable was he. The sounds in his head and the hot breath on his neck, wouldn’t stop. His foe wouldn’t stop hurting him. Occasionally, the hand would be placed gently on his shoulder, and he would try to beat it off, but would succeed in beating himself hard. He kept on hearing the same threats, again and again. However, being of a stubborn type and a man of scientific nature, he tried to convince everyone that it was just an illusion, some terrible nightmare, some strange vision. But was it?Deep within him, however, his opinion was far from the common conceptions he had tried to create. He felt imminent danger approaching, some terrible disaster, a great catastrophe. The warnings, however never pointed to the source of the problems, confusing him all the more. He knew, nevertheless, that as long as the warning came to him alone, it was within himself that
My aunt May had a really cozy apartment in Las Vegas. Ever since she was a child, mother told me, she had always wanted to race horses. She would race around the park like a cowboy, and wield a sword like a knight. Her dream had reached it’s height when she married Grey Maddox, a poor carpenter of horse furniture and a lover of horses. No one in her family knew why May preferred poor Maddox to the rich landowner, Mr. Gregson Grace. This man Gregson was a man of many words but few actions. He promised the lady that he would use his influence to get her into the Olympics as a horse racer, but it was so stupid to trust the words of a man who hardly cared about anything but himself. Hardly could Gregson believe that May could dump him.Enraged at being fooled by May and abandoned for a peasant despite his offers, and fearing that his reputation in the society would go down when all learnt about how May had dumped him, Gregson quickly and quietly unbarred his fangs like the one of an enrag
Captain Russell Rustenburg was a great sailor. With fifteen voyages to remember he had gained a lot of experience in dealing with encounters at sea which includes pirates invasion, shipwreck, cold, hunger, thirst, and isolated Islands. At the age of forty five, he had learnt more than ever that the life one enjoys is more prized than anything he or she possesses. This fact had been the undoing for some who had clutched too long to their cargo and would not let go.Of all of a sailor’s fears, shipwreck and pirate invasion were the worst. Both had the capacity to steal away lives and property, the former being more dangerous than the second, for in that case, the entire boat was lost. The latter was more painful as it is something that could be easily avoided. May arrived at the CGI headquarters thirty minutes to dusk. The sight that greeted her was a plain surprise. Stupefied she was on the look the entire surrounding area gave her. Joseph, who had drove the car was like a man dead twice on seeing the fallen rubble. On careful examination of the building, fire service operators had been able to pull out several bodies, and over the those, May bent her steps. There were several individuals rummaging among the debris for their dead or missing relatives, and upon a post there were the name of the casualties of the incident. With a thumping heart, May searched the names. It didn’t take her long to find the name, “Daria Joseph” upon the tablet. She sighed heavily, and turned away. Lettie was there in an instant, and the look on her face when she saw the name was more like the dead than the living. She stood for a while, and then slumped under her own weight. Joseph stooped down to help his wife up. On seeing that she had passed out, he he’d qu
May had hardly finished her statement, when there was a bang at the door. We all rose to our feet in fear and astonishment and excitement filled the air. I could suddenly hear my heartbeat beating hard against my ear drums.“Open up!” was the command.“I’ll take it!” said May, her eyes suddenly turning purple. Her witch personality had instantly coming to light.“Right behind you.” I said, feeling my fur spreading out from my palms.May casted a spell. Instantly I was sent flying over the center table and against the wall in the corner. Turning to me, somewhat, apologetically she said“Do not interfere. It might make the case more complicated than it already is…”She was interrupted by a bullet passing through the door, hitting her left side, which must have penetrated the left side. I gasped in horror, trying my best to break free what held me to the wall, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t even see what it was that made me thus powerless. She had fallen without a struggle, and mother was on
“Any information on my missing wife, Scott?” Vilvardö asked Douglas. The had had just been summoned by his questioner.“None, sadly Your Excellency. But we are working on it.”“Don’t tell me that again. I need my wife back.”The defense officer bowed his head in confusion and hopelessness.“We’ve tried every means possible. There has been no clue.”“Keep on the look out, Douglas. Or less more of us will lose our women soon enough. I had nothing personal to do with whatever gang did this, and as long as they have not yet been discovered, there remains a dark shadow heading our way. Go!”Douglas turned upon his heel.“I know of someone who may know.”“And who is that?”“General Scott.”The president took in a deep breath, for he wanted to have anything to do with anyone like the well known crime lord, but as his wife’s life was at stake, he nodded, and the officer turned upon his heel and left his presence. Outside the White House, Douglas pulled his phone and dialed the military Genera
It was a cold night, one intensified by the cold floor. On having revived consciousness in the middle of a pitch dark room, Lady Eva painfully dragged her limp body about for a little distance in the empty cell to a side of the four walls of her prison. Reaching the desired corner, she sat up, feeling great pain in her abdominal muscles. Her back also hurt very hard, as though she had hit something very hard. She tried her best to recollect what had happened during the last few days, but not a clue could she get after she met the man in the balcony.Calling out for a few moments to her husband and Oliver, she was finally convinced that she was not at home, but wherever her kidnapper had kept her. She felt extremely weak, cold, and exhausted. Feeling her arms and back she found several bruises, which hurt all the more as she touched them. Feeling the floor beyond her she was utterly shocked, that she had been lying on a thick liquid. A liquid so thick that she as soon recognized as a po
Her entire life, Lady Eva had never experienced such a sudden attack before. It was all in a second, without a warning. And it left no clue behind it as to what would happen to her later. Leaving her husband in the heat of anger, she raced to her favorite spot in the balcony, above her garden and took in the scenery. The bright moon, the lighted up surrounding, and the twinkle of distance stars, all doing much to calm her agitated nerves. She only wished to smell the garden below, and for that reason, she rang the bell for Oliver. While waiting for the servant to make an appearance as she had ordered, she glanced down upon her protruding belly, which she rubbed softly. Within that protected covering, they lay the most beautiful little baby. For a long time, she had always wanted to, as she had done for her two older daughters, to bless this offspring, but she had not found the right time to do it. Standing now under the moonlight, she wanted the heavenly body to be the solid witness t
Aunt May was a naturally reticent person. Among everything she hated, she loathes bothering others. No one would believe that after suffering such a loss as that of her husband, she would not turn to friends and family for assistance, but instead, would depend solely on whatever she could make up for her survival.Being crippled and all, and having an entire farmland that she had to take care of, as well as her other necessities, it became impossible to make ends meet. Still at the face of such a difficulty, May would not ask for help or assistance from her relatives. This, she reasoned, would tie her down to doing nothing but resting in a relative’s home, without having something to do for herself or for them. For this and this reason alone, wooden legged May started off planting crops. The benevolent God made sure her efforts did not go in vain, for as the year went down and the harvest began, she had enough in the barn to keep her going. Late Maddox had left three horses and a sum
