Anna

It was a full thirty minutes after I’d returned to the apartment that there was a shimmer in the air. “It’s clear,” I said in a low voice and moved to the television. I picked a music channel with angry chick rock to play just in case the guards could hear through the door, which I doubted.

“If you’re here to trick me, I won’t think twice about shoving a knife through your heart,” I told her.

“I expect nothing less. I assume from your get-up that Kenzi is here?”

“My outfit is none of your business. Tell me what the hell is going on.”

“Very well. The short version is that unlike the other pack witches, I did not ask for sanctuary and protection. I was taken nearly three years ago. I’ve never been to this godforsaken mountain in my life. I was taken by another witch with a spell much like what happened with Amaya, only I wasn’t killed. I’ve been used ever since, and when Emerson learned that my magic isn’t all that strong, abused.”

“Why didn’t you say anything to the other witches?

AnnaEight wolves descended on Kenzi. I recognized Emerson as he pulled her off me and threw her across the clearing. When he stared down at me, there was nothing but disgust in his eyes. No worry. No compassion. When he growled, I whimpered and tried to drag myself away. Finally, he shifted back to human. “Leave her,” he commanded his other wolves. “Kill her, and we’ll start a war that we’re not prepared for yet.”Turning my head, I watched numbly as Kenzi fought off her attackers. Her eyes on me, she snarled. “Leave my territory,” he said dismissively. “I can’t have you killing my mate, now can I?”She shot one more look at me and then bounded away. Nobody followed her. Their eyes were on Emerson, waiting for instructions, but his attention was fully on me. “Shift before you die,” he said mildly.Painfully, I tried to sit up but pain exploded in my hip. Kenzi had, no doubt, broken several bones. “Can’t,” I whimpered. “She’s too scared.”Emerson cursed loudly and turned to his wolves

Jax“Saul.” The lump in my throat was so large that I could barely get the words out. “She’s so damn cold.”“Then let’s get her warm.” Ever the steady wolf, Saul opened the door to my room, and I carried her inside. Now that she was in my arms again, the last thing I wanted to do was let her go, but even Kenzi was looking at her anxiously. I needed the healer to look at her. “She may be your mate, but she still requires privacy. You may wait in my room while you get your report.”I sure as shit wanted a report. Like why my mate was near death, and why there was an extra person in the group. Janelle. The witch. Her eyes were practically glued to the floor.“I will be right next door, and I’ll return as soon as Saul is done. Whatever Emerson did to you…” I couldn’t finish it. “We’ll find a way to make it better. I swear it.”She gave me a tight smile and nodded. Slowly, the group herded out of the room next door. This plan had been five weeks in the planning, and it was the flimsiest pl

I was so far from my pack that I didn’t have much strength in my pack bonds. My mating bond was dark, and I’d severed Finn, Amelia, and Saul from their bonds so they could get close to Emerson’s territory while seeming like rogues. Kenzi was the only pack bond I had to comfort me.And Anna. Strange. I could still sense her bond. “She didn’t bond with him.”“Not yet, but it was only a matter of time. He intended to kill all her co-coworkers if she didn’t bond with him by the next full moon.”“Co-workers?” I glanced at Kenzi. She shrugged. “It seems that on the surface, he was trying to make her happy. He had her working at a bar.”I glanced down at Janelle. “It would be stronger if we were on my land when we did this, but it’ll have to do. What’s your full name?”“Janelle Sweden Myers.”“Janelle Sweden Myers, do you pledge yourself and your magic to the Black Diamond pack, your loyalty to me as your alpha, and do you swear that all your actions forward will be in service to me and mine

JaxThe small little honeyed wolf was curled up tightly in the bed. She gave me a half-hearted wag as I sat on the edge and gently stroked my hand over the top of her head. “Is it all right if I join you?”Another thump of the tail. I settled back against the wall and resisted the urge to pull the small wolf in my lap. My own wolf rose inside me, but he didn’t try to take control. Instead, he just came close enough so Anna’s wolf could feel me.She sighed and leaned against me.“I guess I should catch you up on what happened,” I began. “The crone called. She was furious that her maiden had been hiding out on our land, so after she finished blistering my ears, she provided some information on Amaya and her twin, Yelena. Apparently, they were close. So close that when Amaya came for the maiden position, the crone was certain both of them were there. She admitted that she’d performed a spell to separate two souls when Amaya disappeared. She assumed the spell worked, and the twins had sim

AnnaIt was nightfall by the time I awakened from within my wolf. Tentatively, I surfaced and took stock. My wolf was curled up next to a warm body and was sleeping soundly. I’d declined any drugs from Saul, so the pain must have ebbed if she was so relaxed.Or maybe it was the heat radiating next to me.Jax had returned after Emerson knocked on the door and hadn’t left my side. I’d listened to his soft voice as he caught me up on everything that had happened, but then I’d retreated deeply.Once I was human, he’d have questions, and I wasn’t sure how he’d feel when I answered them. But unfortunately, I had to pee, and I couldn’t just waltz out of the motel room as a wolf and squat. With a sigh, I started to shift.“Anna? Baby?” Jax held perfectly still while I uncurled myself from the bed. “How do you feel?”“Pee,” I mumbled and tried to stand. “I have to pee.”“Okay. I got you.” He tried to take my hand, and I pulled away. For a moment, we stared at each other. “Sorry. Let me know if

“It’s a good thing we got to you when we did,” Kenzi said cheerfully. “He was getting ready to kill everyone who worked at that bar if you didn’t give him your bond by the next full moon.”My stomach twisted. “Shit. Really?”“Oh, yeah. That seems to be your schtick. Sacrificing yourself for others. Would you have done it?”Would I? I’d deliberately kept myself at a distance because I didn’t trust them. It didn’t occur to me that he would use them against me. No wonder there was so much desperation in their smiles. I’d thought it was just because they’d been ordered to be nice. Did they know that they were cannon fodder?Would I have sacrificed myself for them? There was a knock at the adjoining door. “Food,” Jax said roughly.Amelia and Kenzi both gave me a look, and I nodded. They opened the door and slipped through. Jax walked through with a large bag. “Soup and bread. I wasn’t sure what your stomach would be able to handle. If it sits okay, I’ll send Finn out for something more sub

Jax“Would you have left me there? If the roles were reversed? Would you have come for me?”When she rolled her eyes, I knew I’d hit the mark. She stopped believing in herself a long time ago. Stopped believing that she was worth anything. It clouded every decision she made.“It’s not the same,” she argued. “You have responsibilities. You are in charge of the largest pack on this mountain, and you love it! I told you to let me go.”“Have you so little faith in me that you don’t think I can protect you and my pack?”“I think every second that I’m with you, we are all in danger. You. Me. The pack. Even if we do leave this town, Emerson will just find another way to take me. He doesn’t give up.”“Neither do I,” I roared. I didn’t want to lose my temper, but I was so done with her flimsy excuses. “I am stronger than him, Anna. He can try a thousand times. Or maybe, I kill him and rid us of the problem entirely.”“If you kill him, you could start a war.”“I’ve all but declared war on him a

AnnaEmerson got the human police involved? Of course he did. He couldn’t drag me out of town, but he could get the police to do it. The question was whether this search was legitimate or if Emerson had paid these two officers to drag us away.I pressed my ear to the door.“Missing woman? That’s horrible,” Kenzi said loudly. “It’s just me and my two sisters here. My brother and sister-in-law are next door, but she’s really not feeling well. We can let you take a peek through the adjoining door, but I would appreciate it if you didn’t disturb her.”What was she doing? Hurriedly, I ran to the bed and pulled the covers up to my chin. I thought about pulling them all the way over my head, but that would definitely look suspicious. The sounds were muted, and I held my breath. Jax positioned himself between the bed and the adjoining door. A moment later, it opened. “Jax,” Kenzi said in a stage whisper.“These officers want to take a look at Sarah and make sure she’s not the missing person t

A fresh chill washed over her, causing goosebumps to rise along her arms. Her scalp prickled, and her chest tightened. Now that she considered that possibility, it was swiftly followed by a stark truth staring her in the eye. If someone did come for her, there wasn’t much she could do.As a human in a pack of shifters, she had little recourse for self-defense. She’d have to have a gun in hand at all times, and she didn’t have access to that sort of weapon. Even then, a shifter could easily tear out her throat before she knew what was happening. She was defenseless. And worse, there was nothing she could do to protect her baby, now or in the future.Hayden pulled her close into the fiery heat of his body. “Mica, Mica,” he crooned. “It’s alright. Nothing is going to happen to you.”“You can’t know that.” As much as she wished he was strong enough to keep every threat far from her, Hayden was only one person. He couldn’t be at her side at all times, and he had to take care of his pack re

MicaMica grabbed a washcloth and dumped too much body wash onto it. She focused on the lather of suds, trying to pretend as though she wasn’t shaking all over. This wasn’t right. Hayden should be going into the challenge with full strength. Not healing from injuries like this. It didn’t matter if he was saying that she wasn’t to blame. She was. He knew it. She knew it.“I’ve allowed the demons to delay the challenge too long already,” Hayden said. She glanced at his face. His eyes were closed, face lifted slightly toward the shower head. Was he deliberately not looking at her? Or was it just from how exhausted he was? His muscular body sagged somewhat, as though he was fighting not to lean against the side of the shower.Mica wiped the dampness from her face and started washing his body. She could be strong for him. He was facing death; even though it made her chest ache to think about it, she couldn’t let herself break down. Not yet, at least. He was strong. The strongest person she

“I… I trust that you want what’s best for the pack. I trust that you are a good man, Hayden. Right now, that’s enough for me to want more,” Mica said. They lingered, each searching the other’s eyes. Hayden saw the spark of a promise in Mica’s gaze. The tension that had been making his wolf on edge eased. His shoulders relaxed. It would take time, yes, but so long as Mica was willing to give him a chance, he would prove himself worthy.“How have things been while I was gone?” he asked.Mica shook her head. “We’re going to run out of supplies. Our food is low, and as for everything else… I don’t know what happened, but we’ve lost a quarter of our blankets. Not to mention medical supplies.”Hayden leaned into her touch as she resumed washing his body. “I stopped in to see Ryder. We got a message from Monroe, and I had to order Ryder to be strapped into place to keep him from leaving the medical room.”Mica winced as she glanced up at Hayden’s face. “He’s not happy with me. But it looks l

He stripped off his boxers and threw them into the hamper as well, then headed into the bathroom. The glass door was shut, and Mica stood, concealed by steam and fogged glass, under a stream of water.Hayden knocked on the door, making her jump. He tugged the shower open. “Mind if I join you?”Mica’s hair was hidden under one of those silly-looking shower caps. But her body… oh, her body! Now, this was a sight he would never get tired of seeing. Her heavy breasts were soft with their pink velvet peaks. Her round, soft belly and flared hips. The drab, baggy clothes she always wore hid so much of her. Not just her body but her vibrant personality as well. There was nobody better suited to be his mate. Nobody else in the pack would stand up to him like she did. Nobody would give him dirty looks or tell him that he was a jackass.Tearing his eyes from her sexy body, Hayden looked at her beautiful sea-green eyes. Exhaustion smudged dark circles beneath her eyes, but a small smile tugged at

HaydenHayden shook out his muscles, grimacing at the pull of his most recent injuries. Not only had Echo gotten him pretty good, but Kai had reported back that he and the team Hayden had sent into the forest had found a beast-demon nest. The last few hours had been destroying the eggs and hunting down the hatchlings. The team entered the mudroom at the back of the house and shifted to their human forms. Everyone had received some sort of injury, though fortunately, it wouldn’t take long for any of them to heal. They pulled on the boxer shorts that were kept in the mudroom, all except Finn.Blayke brushed back his hair and gave Finn an envious look. “Wish I could shift back and forth with my clothes on. Maybe it’s a type of magic that can be taught?”Finn gave him a dirty look. “You can’t teach being half—well. Half wolf.”“All of you, take care of your injuries and then get some rest,” Hayden interrupted. The last thing he wanted was for the pack to know that Finn was half-demon. The

Knowing she was pregnant would only make that target on her back even bigger.Tess frowned at her. “Are you okay?”Mica struggled to reign in the anxiety that was no doubt leaking into her expression. “Disappointed. A baby would be a welcome beacon of light in these dark times.”She hoped the strange lilt to her voice could be mistaken for sadness. She didn’t have the mental energy to explain everything to Tess, nor did she want to. Not only were these raging emotions making her feel hollowed out inside, but Tess shouldn’t be the first one to find out. Hayden should.Once Hayden knew and they had a plan for moving forward, she could tell Tess the truth. Hopefully, she’d understand.Right now, though, there was so much tension in the splintered pack that if it was known she was pregnant, it might push the pack to no longer wait for the challenge… which was meant to be tomorrow afternoon.“I’m going to rest,” Mica told Tess, managing a small smile. “And you should as well. We’ve been th

MicaMica didn’t know how she did it, but Tess managed to smuggle in a pregnancy test. Now, Mica sat in the bathroom, staring at the positive result. Her stomach was queasy, and now that she thought about it, she’d been feeling that quite a lot lately. Her body hurt, she always felt tired, and she had chalked it all up to stress.Pregnant.Even though she and Hayden had been having a lot of sex, and she had made the deliberate choice not to use condoms, she still could hardly believe it. Her period had always been all over the place. It wasn’t unusual for her to skip three or four months. She’d always been told it would make getting pregnant more difficult.Counting back, it had been, what, five months? Time passed so quickly that she hadn’t bothered to think about her last period. Before Hayden and the special ops team had returned to the Bluebell Valley pack, at least. So what did that mean? How far along was she?She peeled up her shirt and studied her stomach, looking at it from a

Hayden“I’m just saying that maybe this ritual is worth the risk,” Maverick said. His arms were folded over his chest, and there was a doubtful look on his face. “What will it hurt to try?”Hayden shook his head. “We can’t risk a demon getting free. We don’t know what will happen. For all we know, this ritual is something the demons put into the world to—”He cut off as Finn shuddered. His eyes widened, and his head snapped around, toward the house. “Something’s happening.”Mica.With a curse, Hayden wheeled around and raced for the house. The team fell in step behind him. The pack looked up from their tasks, startled, but Hayden didn’t give any orders. He threw open the front door and took the stairs two at a time. He kicked open the door leading to the room where Echo was kept.Mica, Tess, and Elin were all inside. Tess rang an old brass bell manically, the clanging echoing through the room. Elin held a lighter in hand, racing back and forth to light candles as Echo spun around in h

Mica squeezed her eyes shut tightly. Her stomach churned. It was exactly what she thought—they weren’t even going to try to save Echo, too certain in their own knowledge.“It has to happen soon, Hayden,” Ryder said, his voice low, urgent, and… sorrowful. “I can’t keep holding my tongue. You are my Alpha, and I’ve tried to respect your decisions, but the situation is becoming untenable. This is my mother and my sister we’re talking about. I will tell Mica, if that’s what you would prefer.”“No,” Hayden answered. Why? Why did he not want Ryder to tell her? Tears filled Mica’s eyes and she crept away, not wanting to hear any more. Was Hayden afraid she’d let Echo go? Did he think it was up to him as her mate to tell her that he was going to kill her mother? He doesn’t consider it killing Mom, though. He considers it a mercy, freeing her from the demon. It didn’t make Mica feel any better. She carefully opened the kitchen door, slipped through, and softly closed it. Her heart pounded in h
