Anna

It was Jax who announced over dinner that he was closing talks early.

London balked. “Neither we nor our witches have made any progress.”

“My clan has become too dangerous. There has been a direct attack on a guest. Until I know who attacked her, I would like to err on the side of caution.”

Maeve’s gaze slid to me. “Removing temptation?” She purred.

I gritted my teeth. The whole dinner had been tense. Jax had been right all along. He considered the other alphas enemies, and now he had good reason.

Emerson had turned his third in command to betray Jax. Maeve was ready to pin everything on me, and she was willing to kill now and ask questions later.

And London was walking around with guards bathed in magic. Glamour magic? Some other kind of magic? It took time for me to study it and try and pinpoint what the magic did, and I couldn’t just stand in the open and stare at the guard.

Not to mention the problems we were having outside the alphas. Irene hiding her magic.

JaxThe sound of the water hitting the tile was deafening. There was no other sound in the shower. In my arms, Anna was as hard as stone. She was collecting her thoughts, and I let her as I smoothed my hands up and down the side of her body.“Have you ever let your wolf make a decision about your pack?”“I follow his instincts, but he doesn’t make day-to-day decisions. Why do you ask?”“Because that’s what you’re doing, right now. You’re letting your wolf make the decision. The only reason we’re bonded is because of our wolves. But you, the human half, the part that has to run and protect a pack? You would have never chosen me. You’re never going to love me, but you’re still putting your pack at risk. Your leadership at risk.”My heart skipped a beat. She wasn’t mad or upset. Her voice was neutral, her words even. She’d thought about this, probably since the day I installed her into my bed.Was she wrong?“Every decision I make is for this pack,” I told her in a low voice. “I’ve sacri

“All night.” I tucked her wet hair behind her ear and kissed the top of her head.“Jax, I…” she bit her lower lip and closed her eyes. “I may need a couple of minutes before I’m ready again.”“That’s not what you were going to say,” I growled with narrow eyes.“You’re right. It wasn’t. I decided maybe I didn’t need to speak at all.” Slowly, she lowered herself to her knees and looked up at me.I couldn’t make her talk. I couldn’t make her say whatever was on her mind, whatever truth she wanted to confess, so I let her take my cock in her mouth. I let the pleasure course through me, and I gently tangled my fingers in her wet hair as I fucked her mouth.“Anna,” I grunted and pulled away. My heart hammered in my chest. “Come on, baby. I want you pinned under me. I want to feel the heat between your legs.”Hauling her up once again, I cradled her against me. Anna wrapped her legs around me and buried her head in my neck. Whatever was bothering her, the orgasm hadn’t chased away her fears.

AnnaThe sun rose over the horizon, and I stood by the window and stared at it. Jax’s promise to fuck me all night long fizzled after he brought up food. We ate, and he’d held me, but when he asked me to talk to him, I hadn’t known what to say. So I pretended to sleep. And he pretended the same.He walked out of the bathroom fully dressed. It would still be several hours before the alphas departed, but it was our last chance to talk to Cam, assuming Maeve’s guards would even let her. Saul had already texted to complain that they almost didn’t let him in to his own infirmary.I was planning on going alone, but Jax had immediately vetoed it. He wasn’t even letting me call Amelia or Finn.Something weird was going on with him.“You could get more sleep, and I could talk to Cam.”“Really?” I turned and cocked my head. “Okay.”I sat back on the bed and watched as he looked at the door, the window, back at me, and frowned. “You know what, we should go together. Then you can get some sleep.”

“What? Oh, no. Um…Anna. Sorry, still sleepy. What was the question?” I would table the Jenson conversation for another day. “Are there any witches with you? Like, Cam perhaps? Or Lunessa?” “No, I’m alone. What’s going on?” “There’s a witch glamouring themselves as me, and they took Cam.” Instantly, Irene was awake. “I still have some of her blood. I can use it to track her. Meet me at the cottage.” I hung up and relayed the message to Jax whose features darkened. “Track her with that magic she didn’t want to tell me about?” “Not the time.” We made it to Irene’s cottage in record time, and she was already at the door. She was holding a cloth with blood on it and chanting. She barely glanced at us before she threw the cloth in the air. It started to float. “Hurry. Follow it.” Jax opened his mouth, but I touched his arm and shook my head. His questions for Irene were going to have to wait. “If Cam is dead…” I murmured. “It doesn’t matter. Maeve is not going to touch

Anna“No!” Racing toward Lunessa, I pulled her back down and placed my hand on her chest. The magic was there, buried deep, but I couldn’t draw it out fast enough.Jax shifted and launched himself at Amaya’s twin, whatever her name was. He knocked her out of the air and sank his teeth into her. I focused on drawing the magic away from Lunessa, and when I was done, Lunessa gasped for breath. Jax yelped and flew through the air.“A null,” the black witch hissed. “How interesting. A null and a wolf. Where did you come from, darling?”She hadn’t known?Lunessa stood, but the black witch shook her head. “Don’t bother. I’m already done here.”She disappeared, and I ran to Jax’s side. He was slowly shifting back. “I’m fine,” he muttered. “I’m already healing.”Turning, I raced to Cam. As soon as I knelt down by her, wolves shot out of the trees. Some of them were from Jax’s pack. Jenson came with Irene in his arms.London. Emerson. Maeve and all her guards.I should have known that Lunessa’s

AnnaThe tap had run dry.As the liquid started to spurt and grow foamy, I put the glass down and smiled apologetically at the wolf waiting on the other side of the bar. “Sorry, it’s going to be a few more minutes for that beer. I need to change the tap.”“No worries.” The woman flashed me an easy smile. “It’ll give me a few more minutes to look over the menus. I’m loving all these new choices. Is that your doing?”I gave her a quick nod. “Just let me know if you have any questions. I’ll be right back.”“I’ll do it, Anna,” Josh volunteered as he sat down the crate of clean glasses he’d just brought up from the back. “I know you’re busy.”“Great. Thanks, Josh. I appreciate it.”“Anything for you.”Hiding behind what I hoped was a friendly smile, I turned to address the newest customer who’d walked up. “Welcome to Hair of the Dog. What can I get you?”Hair of the Dog. Not the most original name for a bar in the middle of werewolf territory, but it was well-run. Emerson had installed me

The wolf in the corner spot was Lionel. One of Emerson’s guards. He had a tablet open in front of him but liked to watch the television. He was easily distracted by sports updates. He came in every Wednesday. Three stools down from him was Marko. He was one of the staff members at Emerson’s house. There was at least one a day which told me they were the ones who gave Emerson reports about what I did at work.On the side facing the liquor wall was Elonso. This was his first visit, so he wasn’t on Emerson’s rotation. That made sense. Two seats from him was the female wolf. Maria? Maris? This was only her second visit, and she paid cash and hadn’t given me her name. I’d only heard her use it when she answered the phone. She wasn’t particularly dominant, and she worked mostly on her computer. From her phone calls, I gathered she was a planner of some sort.On the other corner was Noah. He was barely old enough to drink and had the kind of face that turned beet red whenever I looked at him

AnnaThe regiment was always the same. After my shift ended, I had three hours to relax, shower, and prepare for dinner. As always, there was a dress laid out on the chair. Not the bed, as if that was somehow supposed to make me feel better.I wasn’t an idiot. I knew the suite was searched every day while I was gone. There were little things I would note before I left and saw that they’d been moved. Sometimes it was a lampshade turned just a little. Once, I’d tucked the edge of some thread under the rug and found it in the corner when I got home. My bedsheet was tucked differently. Emerson told me that he would have the maid come in every day, but I’d asked to keep my own suite clean. He’d relented, but it hadn’t stopped him from searching the rooms.Tonight’s dress was red. Most of the dresses were red. That seemed to be Emerson’s favorite color. The dresses were never the same. Either the pack’s seamstress was very busy or Emerson was spending an enormous amount of money clothing me

A fresh chill washed over her, causing goosebumps to rise along her arms. Her scalp prickled, and her chest tightened. Now that she considered that possibility, it was swiftly followed by a stark truth staring her in the eye. If someone did come for her, there wasn’t much she could do.As a human in a pack of shifters, she had little recourse for self-defense. She’d have to have a gun in hand at all times, and she didn’t have access to that sort of weapon. Even then, a shifter could easily tear out her throat before she knew what was happening. She was defenseless. And worse, there was nothing she could do to protect her baby, now or in the future.Hayden pulled her close into the fiery heat of his body. “Mica, Mica,” he crooned. “It’s alright. Nothing is going to happen to you.”“You can’t know that.” As much as she wished he was strong enough to keep every threat far from her, Hayden was only one person. He couldn’t be at her side at all times, and he had to take care of his pack re

MicaMica grabbed a washcloth and dumped too much body wash onto it. She focused on the lather of suds, trying to pretend as though she wasn’t shaking all over. This wasn’t right. Hayden should be going into the challenge with full strength. Not healing from injuries like this. It didn’t matter if he was saying that she wasn’t to blame. She was. He knew it. She knew it.“I’ve allowed the demons to delay the challenge too long already,” Hayden said. She glanced at his face. His eyes were closed, face lifted slightly toward the shower head. Was he deliberately not looking at her? Or was it just from how exhausted he was? His muscular body sagged somewhat, as though he was fighting not to lean against the side of the shower.Mica wiped the dampness from her face and started washing his body. She could be strong for him. He was facing death; even though it made her chest ache to think about it, she couldn’t let herself break down. Not yet, at least. He was strong. The strongest person she

“I… I trust that you want what’s best for the pack. I trust that you are a good man, Hayden. Right now, that’s enough for me to want more,” Mica said. They lingered, each searching the other’s eyes. Hayden saw the spark of a promise in Mica’s gaze. The tension that had been making his wolf on edge eased. His shoulders relaxed. It would take time, yes, but so long as Mica was willing to give him a chance, he would prove himself worthy.“How have things been while I was gone?” he asked.Mica shook her head. “We’re going to run out of supplies. Our food is low, and as for everything else… I don’t know what happened, but we’ve lost a quarter of our blankets. Not to mention medical supplies.”Hayden leaned into her touch as she resumed washing his body. “I stopped in to see Ryder. We got a message from Monroe, and I had to order Ryder to be strapped into place to keep him from leaving the medical room.”Mica winced as she glanced up at Hayden’s face. “He’s not happy with me. But it looks l

He stripped off his boxers and threw them into the hamper as well, then headed into the bathroom. The glass door was shut, and Mica stood, concealed by steam and fogged glass, under a stream of water.Hayden knocked on the door, making her jump. He tugged the shower open. “Mind if I join you?”Mica’s hair was hidden under one of those silly-looking shower caps. But her body… oh, her body! Now, this was a sight he would never get tired of seeing. Her heavy breasts were soft with their pink velvet peaks. Her round, soft belly and flared hips. The drab, baggy clothes she always wore hid so much of her. Not just her body but her vibrant personality as well. There was nobody better suited to be his mate. Nobody else in the pack would stand up to him like she did. Nobody would give him dirty looks or tell him that he was a jackass.Tearing his eyes from her sexy body, Hayden looked at her beautiful sea-green eyes. Exhaustion smudged dark circles beneath her eyes, but a small smile tugged at

HaydenHayden shook out his muscles, grimacing at the pull of his most recent injuries. Not only had Echo gotten him pretty good, but Kai had reported back that he and the team Hayden had sent into the forest had found a beast-demon nest. The last few hours had been destroying the eggs and hunting down the hatchlings. The team entered the mudroom at the back of the house and shifted to their human forms. Everyone had received some sort of injury, though fortunately, it wouldn’t take long for any of them to heal. They pulled on the boxer shorts that were kept in the mudroom, all except Finn.Blayke brushed back his hair and gave Finn an envious look. “Wish I could shift back and forth with my clothes on. Maybe it’s a type of magic that can be taught?”Finn gave him a dirty look. “You can’t teach being half—well. Half wolf.”“All of you, take care of your injuries and then get some rest,” Hayden interrupted. The last thing he wanted was for the pack to know that Finn was half-demon. The

Knowing she was pregnant would only make that target on her back even bigger.Tess frowned at her. “Are you okay?”Mica struggled to reign in the anxiety that was no doubt leaking into her expression. “Disappointed. A baby would be a welcome beacon of light in these dark times.”She hoped the strange lilt to her voice could be mistaken for sadness. She didn’t have the mental energy to explain everything to Tess, nor did she want to. Not only were these raging emotions making her feel hollowed out inside, but Tess shouldn’t be the first one to find out. Hayden should.Once Hayden knew and they had a plan for moving forward, she could tell Tess the truth. Hopefully, she’d understand.Right now, though, there was so much tension in the splintered pack that if it was known she was pregnant, it might push the pack to no longer wait for the challenge… which was meant to be tomorrow afternoon.“I’m going to rest,” Mica told Tess, managing a small smile. “And you should as well. We’ve been th

MicaMica didn’t know how she did it, but Tess managed to smuggle in a pregnancy test. Now, Mica sat in the bathroom, staring at the positive result. Her stomach was queasy, and now that she thought about it, she’d been feeling that quite a lot lately. Her body hurt, she always felt tired, and she had chalked it all up to stress.Pregnant.Even though she and Hayden had been having a lot of sex, and she had made the deliberate choice not to use condoms, she still could hardly believe it. Her period had always been all over the place. It wasn’t unusual for her to skip three or four months. She’d always been told it would make getting pregnant more difficult.Counting back, it had been, what, five months? Time passed so quickly that she hadn’t bothered to think about her last period. Before Hayden and the special ops team had returned to the Bluebell Valley pack, at least. So what did that mean? How far along was she?She peeled up her shirt and studied her stomach, looking at it from a

Hayden“I’m just saying that maybe this ritual is worth the risk,” Maverick said. His arms were folded over his chest, and there was a doubtful look on his face. “What will it hurt to try?”Hayden shook his head. “We can’t risk a demon getting free. We don’t know what will happen. For all we know, this ritual is something the demons put into the world to—”He cut off as Finn shuddered. His eyes widened, and his head snapped around, toward the house. “Something’s happening.”Mica.With a curse, Hayden wheeled around and raced for the house. The team fell in step behind him. The pack looked up from their tasks, startled, but Hayden didn’t give any orders. He threw open the front door and took the stairs two at a time. He kicked open the door leading to the room where Echo was kept.Mica, Tess, and Elin were all inside. Tess rang an old brass bell manically, the clanging echoing through the room. Elin held a lighter in hand, racing back and forth to light candles as Echo spun around in h

Mica squeezed her eyes shut tightly. Her stomach churned. It was exactly what she thought—they weren’t even going to try to save Echo, too certain in their own knowledge.“It has to happen soon, Hayden,” Ryder said, his voice low, urgent, and… sorrowful. “I can’t keep holding my tongue. You are my Alpha, and I’ve tried to respect your decisions, but the situation is becoming untenable. This is my mother and my sister we’re talking about. I will tell Mica, if that’s what you would prefer.”“No,” Hayden answered. Why? Why did he not want Ryder to tell her? Tears filled Mica’s eyes and she crept away, not wanting to hear any more. Was Hayden afraid she’d let Echo go? Did he think it was up to him as her mate to tell her that he was going to kill her mother? He doesn’t consider it killing Mom, though. He considers it a mercy, freeing her from the demon. It didn’t make Mica feel any better. She carefully opened the kitchen door, slipped through, and softly closed it. Her heart pounded in h
