Tonight was the Noble Academy’s welcome-back dinner for the new year.
Most of the women in attendance weren’t here for an education or to better themselves. They were dressed like they were walking the red carpet and wore so much makeup that they looked fake. Still, the gleam of their jewelry and their figures caught the attention of most of the men who were starting school with us. Some of it was tasteful, but a lot of it just seemed like they were flaunting their wealth needlessly.
Claire and I sat in the corner of the room, away from most of the other tables, uninterested in speaking to most of the others in the room. Claire and I were so underdressed for the event that we looked like we didn’t belong, and that was fine for us. We weren’t here to make friends. We had each other, and that was enough. Claire was the daughter of the Full Moon Pack’s Secretary of State. She was important enough that it would never matter what she wore. She was also as beautiful as her mother, with a kind and sincere heart that drew people to her. She was popular at school because of that, but she never let that popularity go to her head.
She said once that it was my spirit that made her start opening up to her, but I still believed that she was the one who pulled me out of my shell. When I thought back on everything that had happened since I ran away from the Wolf Fang Pack, I smiled brighter.
I was infamous at the Noble Academy.
Fainting in front of the Alpha King’s car four years ago was the best thing I had done in my life.
The announcements ended, and the music was turned up, almost blotting out the conversations in the room. People mingled and cast curious glances our way, but no one approached.
Suddenly, the music stopped. They weren’t playing anything good, so I didn’t miss it, but it was strange. I looked over to the DJ’s booth as he seemed to be watching someone. Whispers started to drift through the room.
“What’s Francium planning to do?” Someone asked.
“Jeez, he’s not going to ask the girl he loves to be his girlfriend, right?”
“Is it Claire? Or is it the chubby one? What’s her name?”
“Are you okay?” Claire asked, her eyes filled with worry.
I almost rolled my eyes at them. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Claire hesitated but shook her head. “You’d think they realize that we can hear them.”
I shrugged. “I don’t think they care. Glad it’s mutual.”
Claire laughed and shook her head, relaxing.
“That’s Hedy,” a male voice said. “I mean, she doesn’t look bad. She’s just fat.”
“Did you hear that Hedy’s living…”
I tuned the murmuring out as I noticed the man coming toward us. Francium was handsome, probably the most handsome man in the room. He was tall and pale, but there was no denying he was attractive. His eyes were a beautiful shade of blue that always seemed a bit sad. I remembered how vulnerable those eyes had been the first time we met.
More than just how attractive he was, he was the second son of the New Moon Pack’s alpha, the third largest pack. The Full Moon Pack, ruled by Candido, was the largest, followed by the Red Moon Pack and the New Moon Pack. Beyond the top three, there were dozens more, including the Wolf Fang Pack.
The Noble Academy was in the capital of the Full Moon Pack, in the heart of the city. The only people allowed to attend were the heirs of packs, no matter their size, and the children of celebrities. Francium wasn’t special in this crowd in terms of standing, but he had a noble and mysterious aura about him that made women go crazy for him.
While he seemed nice enough, I didn’t have any feelings toward him. I didn’t think Claire did either. Glares of envy turned towards us as Francium reached our table.
“I like you, Hedy,” he said, just as I thought he would. “I’ve been really attracted to you since the first time we met. Will you go out with me?”
His voice was sincere. His eyes were so filled with earnestness. I almost winced. Murmuring kicked up around the room. People gasped and stared. Their jaws dropped open in shock and disbelief.
“Is he serious?” A woman asked, her voice almost shrill. “Her?”
“What does he even see in her?”
“Sorry,” I said, looking up at him. “I’m touched, but I don’t feel the same. I can’t go out with you.”
His smile dropped, and his eyes widened in shock. The gasps rippled through the room at my words.
“B-But why?” Francium asked. “You won’t even give me a chance?”
There were so many answers to that question, but before I could speak, another voice cut through the air.
“Miss Hedy.”
I smiled and turned my head towards the entrance of the banquet hall. A group of men entered all bearing badges of the Full Moon Pack’s security. The silence in the room filled with excited whispers as they entered. It was rare that the Full Moon Pack made any sort of showing like this. Claire and I attended the Noble Academy, but we weren’t flashy about our relations to the Full Moon Pack.
It was Allan, sounding as authoritative as ever, as he walked across the banquet hall towards our table wearing a suit that was much nicer than usual. The whispers turned from insulting to curious and gossipy with every step he took toward me.
I looked behind him, expecting Candido to come striding through, but he didn’t come.
What was going on?
“Allan, why are you here?” I asked, grinning and feeling myself grow happier at the sight of him.
If Allen was here, then Candido couldn’t be far.
“I am only here to pick you up,” he said with a kind smile. “The Alpha King is waiting for you outside.”
“Seems like the rumors are true,” someone whispered, sneering behind Allen’s back as we passed.
Allen wouldn’t know about the rumors that circulated in the school about my relationship with Candido. Admittedly, remembering how desperate I had been when he brought me to his home, the rumors had some founding. I had been prepared to give him whatever he wanted if he granted me sanctuary, but Candido hadn’t wanted my body.
It was a bit disturbing, now, that people thought he would be interested in me when I wasn’t an adult, but I ignored it. People were always gossiping about Candido. His reputation as a murderer made it easier for people to think the worst of him.
“Shut your mouth,” Francium snarled from behind us.
“I love Hedy, and if you speak bad about her, you’re insulting me too.”
My eye widened at the declaration. Murmurs of confusion went through the room as people glanced between us. Francium never lost his temper. He was always polite and well-mannered. Seeing him like this was surprising and confusing for me.
I glanced at Claire, who seemed to be looking at Francium with stars in her eyes, and smiled.
At least Claire was in good hands. I turned back and hurried after Allen towards the exit of the building. He opened the door of the lavish car, and I climbed in, grinning at Candido, who looked at me and offered a small nod.
“This is a nice surprise.”
He nodded as the door closed behind me. “There’s just one thing.”
I frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“The alpha of the Wolf Fang Pack has invited us to his birthday party tonight.”
My heart lurched with terror. I felt sick.
I had never imagined that I would ever have to see my family again.
Would they try to hurt me the way they did before?
Candido watched me carefully. “We’re going home so you can change for the event.” A protest rose to my lips, but I swallowed it and sat up straight. I was a member of the Full Moon Pack. I hadn’t been Hedy of the Wolf Fang Pack in four years. There was no sense in being afraid of a small pack that posed no threat to me or the Full Moon Pack. So, I sat back and nodded. “I hope you didn’t pick out an orange dress.” "Of course not.” The dress was a shimmering nude and white dress that flattered me as if it was made to fit me. Knowing Candido, it probably had been. I promised not to be afraid. I kept a brave face from the time I got dressed until I returned to the car to ride to the banquet hall on the other side of the capital city. Still, my stomach turned with nerves. When we arrived, I stepped out of the car with Candido and looked up at the banquet. Before, there was no way that my father would have been able to afford such a thing. Either the pack was doing well, or the
Candido’s voice pulled me out of my flashback. I sucked in a sharp breath and looked up at him. He gazed at my face, his eyebrows furrowed. "Don't be afraid." My tears fell from my eyes at his words. He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me to his chest. I leaned back and took a deep breath, trying to slow my racing heart. The sight and sounds of the banquet hall filled my senses, and I averted my gaze from my father. Everything was fine. Candido was here. I would never have to go back. I would never be abused again. “Nothing,” I said, shaking off the scare and clenching my hand to hide my trembling. “I’m fine.” “I’m not done—” Steven’s voice broke off. He stepped back and went a bit pale. I could only imagine Candido was glaring at him as he tightened his grip around my waist. Silence filled the air again as they glared at each other. Lilian’s words came back to me, and I remembered the conversations Candido and I had over the years. Steven had reached out to t
“Poor girl.” “Honestly, she shouldn’t have been allowed to come if she was going to act like that.” No one would believe me now. I turned, looking for Candido. Yet, Bella had grabbed my dress with her bleeding hand. “Trying to run away again, Hedy? Like every time you’ve done bad things to me?” Bella asked, her voice just loud enough to be heard by everyone and stir up more whispers. “Haven’t you learned anything?” I looked at her bloody hand and then at the sneer in her eyes. I knew her well enough to know that the moment she saw me in this dress, she wanted to take it from me or destroy it. It wasn’t the first time she’d taken or destroyed something of mine because she wanted and couldn’t happen. All the memories of my mother I should have had after her death, keepsakes and mementos, had been lost to Bella’s jealousy and selfishness. I dropped my gaze to her neck, where my mother’s necklace hung, gleaming on her collar. Bella tugged at my dress and grabbed another fis
I turned, relieved to see Candido coming through the crowd. They parted and bowed their heads. No one said a thing, probably quaking at the thought they might have been heard bad-mouthing me and agreeing with Eric. “You must be, speaking to anyone in my pack that way. Perhaps you’d like your pack to pay the price for your idiocy?” His eyes narrowed. “Penance is owed, isn’t it?” Eric paled and stepped back, glancing at me and then dropping his gaze. Candido glared at him, daring him to say anything as the raw power of his presence loomed over Eric. Bella shifted the top of her dress down, just enough to reveal more of her cleavage. She looked ridiculous, but Candido didn’t even glance at her. His gaze swept past Bella and Lilian down to the blood-stained corner of my dress. His eyes narrowed as he looked at me. “Hedy,” he said. “Are you alright?” I swallowed and gave him a trembling smile as I nodded. It wasn’t a lie. Now that he was here, I was just fine. I stepped closer to
I closed my eyes, bracing for pain or more yelling. I heard a loud crack and a shriek of pain as I tried to get my heart to calm down. Candido’s scent filled my nose as I buried my face in the fabric of the back of his suit and breathed. Candido was here. I was safe. I would always be safe if he was here. When I opened my eyes, a security officer of Team Gamma was standing between Candido and Bella. She was crumpled on the ground, holding her wrist and wailing in agony. Tears rolled down her face as she gasped and shuddered on the ground. The officer turned his head just slightly, never turning his gaze from Bella. “Will that be sufficient, Your Majesty?” Bella shuddered and lifted her head. She glared at me through the curtain of her hair that was still a bit wet from the wine she’d spilled on herself. My mother’s necklace glinted in the low light as it swung, and she heaved. “I’m going to make your life a living hell, Hedy!” She shrieked. “For now,” Candido sai
He winced. “His Majesty has asked not to be disturbed. He’s reviewing documents.” I nodded. “Well, make sure he eats something. He gets cranky when he’s hungry.” Allen chuckled. “Of course, Miss Hedy.” When the house was quiet, and I was certain that no one would hear me, I locked the door to my bedroom and closed the thick curtains around my bed. I pulled the hidden panel in the headboard out and put on my headset. “Pandora to Moon Shadow, online,” I said. The screen of the computer shifted as the computer recognized my voice and initialized the unlocking protocols to the private messaging board of Moon Shadow. In the wake of the chaos that had started to infect werewolf society after the rise of the vampire king, Moon Shadow was formed to help combat it. The organization was made up of only werewolves with awakened bloodlines. No one knew anyone’s real name, faces, or voices, but we all shared a common vision: bringing about the unity and peace of the werewolf world, f
It was a weird question, but it wasn’t the first time that Candido had started a strange conversation with me. I thought about it and answered, “People say he’s the most handsome guy at school, and he receives a lot of love letters in pink envelopes every day.” Then I laughed. “Ohh Claire thinks his eyes are very charming.” Candido clenched his fists at his sides as I frowned at the glass I had been offering to him for the past few moments. Why wasn’t he taking it back? Candido took a deep breath. “You think his eyes are charming?” “Not me. Claire.” “I don’t care.” He said stiffly. “I’m asking what you think.” Candido looked so serious. More serious than I had ever seen him. It wasn’t like him to fixate on something so trivial. I usually told him all about my day, but there hadn’t been much to say today, and my mind wasn’t on my day at the Academy, let alone Francium. Maybe there was something going on with the New Moon Pack. Was he in negotiations with them about someth
“His Majesty left early into the city for a meeting.” That was odd. Candido was an early riser, but he rarely missed breakfast with me. He pretended like it was just to check up on me, but I think he enjoyed our quiet time together. This morning had been the first time I’d eaten breakfast without him in a long time. It wasn’t completely out of the ordinary alone, but in relation to that conversation we had last night and the way he’d evaded my questions about the party, it was odd. I slipped out of the car when we arrived, waved most of the team goodbye, and headed into the Academy. People were milling about on the front lawn and in the hallway. Some gave me wide-eyed glances, but I ignored them. “Hedy!” Claire called, rushing down the hall towards me. People parted for her, but they were still staring at me. Maybe it was because of Francium’s confession yesterday? Or had they heard about Bella’s engagement disaster? Whatever the reason, I ignored them as Claire reached me.
She cocked an eyebrow. “They might be related, but there’s no way to know if they’re compatible.”“They’re both golden wolves. That should be enough.” I swallowed. “I don’t care what you have to do, you have to keep him alive.”Her eyes drifted down to Candido with an odd expression on her face. “I’ll see what I can do,” she looked up at me. “But… there will be a hefty cost.”“I don’t care,” I said. If Candido was really being used to stabilize Solare, whatever that meant, then I had make sure that he had enough life force, that his body still remained, after that was done to wake up. “I developed a drug that strengthened wolves,” she said. “I have a feeling that it would at least help.”My eyes bulged. “You’re… You’re the one who made the drug for the vampires.”She smiled. “I am. And?”I growled at her. “You’re a traitor.”Her smile turned cold. “And you aren’t the alpha king’s mate.”She cocked an eyebrow. “Given the state of the world, do you think they’ll care?”“Of course, the
“It was unsure if my Beloved King would have ever risen again and to what world,” she said. “It was for the best that I changed the path.”“We’re mates,” I said again. “We’re mates. Nothing you say can change that.”“Mates,” she scoffed. “A tool for conquest. Were you not listening? The vampiric power you inherited from your mother was the only reason you could fake the moon mark. The white fur you inherited from your father turned platinum because of it. When you were no longer a vampire, after Cillian had drained the last of that power out of you, you were just a plain werewolf…”“I don’t believe you,” I said. “I won’t believe you. You’re just trying to trick me.”“Your real moon mark vanished the night that your mate died trying to protect you.”I saw the senior diving in front of me and jerking as the bullets hit him in the chest. “Him?” I growled. “No. I can’t believe that.”“Neither could your mother,” she laughed. “By the time you met your grandfather, I had already been makin
I pushed at the wall, trying to get over there and drag Estella away from Candido. Then, Vanessa appeared dressed in a wispy gauzy red dress. She looked younger than the last time I had seen her. Two younger men followed her, chatting with her though I couldn’t make out what they were saying. They were dressed in red tunics. Then, I saw Claire and Francium striding towards them in red. They were holding hands. Her hair was gathered up in a flower wreath as they smiled together. They looked so happy together as they sat beside Candido and Estella. Soon, I saw other people. I saw Claire’s parents and the people I remember dying over the course of the war. They sat together in a circle around Candido and Estella, chatting happily. “Don’t be happy!” I yelled, banging on the wall. “Claire! You’re supposed to be my friend! Get her away from my mate!”No one even noticed I was there. They laughed and chatted, welcoming other people as they came to join them. Everyone else was wearing red,
Weeks passed, and in that time, I made the remaining people do what needed to be done. They fixed up the building Candido and I were in. While they couldn’t get the water or electricity working, there was a roof and the floors were cleaned. They brought me food when they came to check on Candido and busied themselves with trying to contact whoever else might be alive. “Miss Hedy.”I looked up, glaring at them. “How many times have I told you to call me luna?”The man lifted his head. “Until the king confirms it, I would never disgrace the position that way.”I glared at him. “Then, I suppose you’ll be tried for treason, then.”His eyes narrowed as two people entered the room. “You’re supposed to be regent, right?” The woman asked. “You have some authority.”I lifted my head. “I’m luna.”She pointed at the man beside her. “Then tell this man that I want nothing to do with him and he should leave me alone.”“We’re mates!” He growled. “You’re not going to leave me.”“There is no mark,”
When I opened my eyes, I knew I wasn’t awake. Candido wasn’t there with me. I was seated across a long table that I had never seen before. The windows were all made of stained glass. Moonlight filtered through the colorful glass and sent the colors splashing everywhere. At the other end of the table was the vampire king. He was darker than I remember, but his hair glowed the way it had in that castle. The crown on his brow twinkled with light. To his left, like an odd reflection, was Marius. His blonde hair didn’t glow, and he didn’t wear a crown, but looking at the two of them it was so obvious that he was related to the thing. Their eyes glowed the same. I clenched my jaw and glared at them both. “Where am I?” I asked. “If you think you can change my mind about—”“The time to change your mind has long since passed, Hedy,” the vampire king said softly. His lips twitched into a small smile. “The time to make different decisions is long since over.”He took a deep breath and shook h
I shook my head. “You’re lying. You have to be lying. How would you know if the door was closed?”He laughed. “It was closed to her and all the other traitors. No child of Lunae who still walks in the Goddess’ grace would be turned away from returning home.”I swallowed and shook my head. “She never got Candido’s grandfather or father… I imagine she’s burning with jealousy that you’re so close to what she wanted,” he smiled. “Or maybe she’s proud that you share the same tastes.”“None of that matters,” I said. “I’m not a vampire. I never was. I’m a werewolf. I’m Candido’s mate. Tell me what you plan is. What are trying to do? If you’re trying to hurt Candido, I’ll never forgive you.”He laughed, throwing his head back. “Why would I give a fuck about your forgiveness, traitor?”“I— ““You’re even worse than Hedwig in some ways,” He laughed. “At least Hedwig mourned Candido’s father and grandfather. At least she was faithful in her pursuit. You jumped at the chance to get as close to f
I fell to the ground, choking. For a moment, I imagined Candido stroking my hair like we were in one of the parlors at the Estate before the war. I could almost hear him reading a book to me, some book that I was supposed to read for class but didn’t want to. I didn’t remember the words. I wasn’t even paying attention to his words or the book. I didn’t care. I just loved that he was spending time with me. It was all that I wanted. It was all that I had ever wanted. I closed my eyes and let myself sink into the memory. Slowly, the darkness faded. I felt his lips on my forehead then he was gone. It was so cold. I shivered in the wind that picked up over the mountaintop. I opened my eyes. Dawn was coming over the mountain. I shook and rolled over and tried to get up. I could see Candido there. His fur was still golden. He hadn’t turned back. He didn’t move. I crawled toward him. “Candido?” I whispered. “Candido? You can’t be gone… She promised me. I… You promised.”I got to him and we
“Fuck!”I rolled over and tried to see what was happening as I sucked in breath after breath. I choked, trying to catch my breath as I saw a glint of silver cut through the air. The man barely choked as his head tumbled through the air. His body went up in flames. Then, I saw Raven’s face. Her eyes were filled with blood-red light. She walked toward me. A flash of silver went by me and the gag loosened. I spat it out and my hands fell apart like the cuffs were broken. Her sword was aimed at me. Her expression was cold as she looked at me. Her hand trembled. Tears streamed down her face. Her jaw trembled. Then, she lowered her blade. I couldn’t believe it. I looked around, searching for someone else, but there was no one. It was just the two of us behind the barrier. Then, the wall of light shimmered and started to fade.I heard a stroke of thunder and turned as lightning fell from the sky and slammed into the side of the mountain. I smiled. Candido was using his power and winning. W
The fury simmered behind the tears in her eyes before she turned back to the group. They talked a little longer When they broke apart, none of them came my way. Most of them went with Wren, but the man with bandages headed toward a different truck. I eyed him suspiciously. What was he doing separate from the rest of them? Were the rest of them going to Candido and leaving him behind? Where were they going?I looked across the way as Harper and Wren and the others looked at me, glaring. Their eyes were filled with red light. They drove away, never taking their eyes off me. One of the women was crying. I looked over at the bandaged man as he hauled himself onto the back of the truck, still leaning to one side. Then, the truck I was in started to drive away. I turned back to see where were going and knew we were headed toward the mountain from my vision. My heart started to race. It seemed like we were heading to the end of the war now.“Black Team,” someone said. “En route to Gold Tea
