"This is f*cking crazy."

"I know."

"I can't believe I let you talk me into this."

"I'm sorry."

At present, we stand in the alcove a few feet away from the administrative wing. Night had rolled in and the sound of doors slamming shut tells me people are closing up for the day.

"A lot could go wrong," Sophie whispers harshly.

"And a lot could go right."

"What do I get out of it anyway?"

I lock gazes with her. "Justice."

I step out of the shadowy area, calling to her, "Come on."

A muffled curse from within. Slowly she steps out. Not as Sophie, but Headmistress Alba.

"You do realize this plan could go to shit the moment I open my mouth," she says. "I've skipped enough practice room periods to not be able to shift my vocal chords."

"Don't worry, I'll think of something."

"You sure?"

"Yeah... I'm good at lying."

"Okay, thank God. I would lie, but you know." She waves a hand around her mouth--which is Headmistress Alba's mouth.

"Yeah, I know," I say. "Now, come on."

"I didn't know what else to say.""Maybe that I had an allergy reaction--a f*cking throat rash maybe--and I left my medication inside the office?""I'm sorry, okay? I still managed to get us in, didn't I?"She grunts. I go over to her desk, pulling drawers open. "Hey, do you have any idea what he meant by 'The Operation'?""No, and I don't care. Let's just grab the stuff and get out of here.""We're not grabbing anything, Soph.""Oh, that's right, I don't even know the details of this plan. Care to finally enlighten me?"I pause long enough to sigh. "We just need to check the folders of the tragic three and see if there's a pattern somewhere. Maybe they're all the same species."Maybe I could finally know what I am.She plops down and kicks her feet up, the movement clunky next to the clean cut look of the Headmistress. "How about you just asked me what species they were?"I still. I hadn't thought of that. "Well, what species were they?"Beats me.""Then why did you-- Never mind." Th

She knows. The realization simply comes to me. What she is also registers, as does her fear. My claws shoot out on instinct, but I don't move, can't move. I hear my dragon's distant roar, his distaste at my dream-state palpable."Where are the humans?"I know that voice, have been here countless times. It's King Arhuk. The Necculean king."Here they come, sire."I turn just as the king does. The mouth of the dark cavern sees two guards dragging in three humans. Their screams are muffled behind the cloths over their mouth, but it's the raw fear in their eyes that sends chills skating down my spine. What's going on?"We found three just as you ordered, sire," a guard says when he's near enough.King Arhuk comes into view. Lines weather his face, the countless centuries he's lived through starting to take their toll. "Good." His voice is cool. "The Eld aren't completely useless."The Eld?They are in league with the Telks?"Bring the priestess."Another guard drags a woman forth. "Releas

Our first period's Calculus. All around me, students drag their feet as they settle in, faces worn. When a tingle rushes down my spine, I look up to see Emmaline making her way in. She's the only one who seems alert.Too alert, it looks like. She's jumpier than usual and there are shadows beneath her eyes. Through the rush of students, she makes her way to her designated seat, bumping into a boy in the process. He draws back, pissed, and lashes words I can't hear at her.She doesn't seem to hear him, sparing him a glance before her elbow shoots out, knocking him out of the way.Reluctant amusement rises. When she sits, I find myself unable to look away, dimly aware I'm burning holes into the back of her head. What is she doing here? Why won't she leave?"Hey."I look up to see Sabrina offer me a shy smile.Long forgotten muscles pull and contract, working to produce a smile. "Hey."She doesn't remark on the ugly baring of teeth, instead sliding into the seat next to me. Her cheeks col

EMMASo how did you and dad meet? The words stare back at me blankly, seven words on a glaring white screen. I press delete until everything disappears, but even in the empty screen, the question lingers, held in place by a gnawing fear."Come on," Sophie says.I throw my phone into my bag, going over to smooth a hand over my purple button down. I debate whether to tuck it into my jeans or let it just hang out. When I turn, I see Sophie watching me thoughtfully. "What?"She opens her mouth to speak then decides against it. She shakes her head. "Nothing."We head to the dinning hall. Time seems to pass by in a whirl. I barely taste the food, my head buzzing. At the forefront of my mind is my discovery. There are others like me, were others like me. I wonder if there are still others like me. Or have they all been killed in a similar way?On the bright side the 'puzzle' of my identity has been answered. I'm a... Death bringer. If you asked me, being called death bringer trumps being ca

Wind blows my hair into my face. I'm grateful I had the hindsight to grab a shawl on the way out. Sophie's torchlight illuminates the path before us. It's lights out, but the quiet patter of feet tells me people are still out and about. I trail my fingers along a cold wall, following close behind."So what's the punishment?" Sophie asks me."What?" I ask, securing my hair behind my ear when heavy wind blows past."Why did the headmistress call you into her office?""My records came in this morning," I admit."Oh, you were tested already?""Yes." The word is pulled out of me, leaving in place guilt. "It says I'm a sphinxe.""Cool. Explains the claws."My brows pinch as I take in my blunt fingernails. Why do I have claws? Were they, like, the result of some genetic imbalance--or excess DNA, like having extra toes or fingers. Cool, I think in awe. Immortal genetic imbalance. "Just don't set our room on fire or freeze me to death." "I won't."As we pour into a connecting corridor, I fin

The woman blows her nose noisily, discarding the soiled paper towel only to reclaim another one, dabbing at her eyes. "She was loved by all."There are a few dutiful nods from the students. Our professor continues. "Her death was as unexpected as it was unwelcome. Faerin Campbell was a model student, excellent in her academic pursuits and unbeatable in the fields." She picks the bright yellow basket we've all been eyeing curiously off the desk. "The school has decided to host an exercise. In this basket are folded papers containing the names of your potential partner. I want you to open up to yourselves about what loss means to you through whatever form of expression you choose." She hands it to the first student. "Please send this around."The yellow basket makes its way around the class. When it is passed to me, I grip it uncertainly. Tentatively, I put my hand in, riffling through it to grab a paper. I send it onward, watching from the corner of my eyes as it gets to Rylan. Anoth

I speak first, breaking the silence, "Why do you have gasoline in your bag?"By now the fire had died, only spirals of smoke curled up."I was on my way to burn bridges.""What?" I ask, stunned. "What are you burning bridges for?"One look at my face has his lips twitching. "Not those kinds of bridges. They're more metaphorical." He heads down to a corner of the room, grabbing a brush. He gathers the burnt remains, throwing them into the trash."Thank you," I say. "Please... Promise you won't tell anyone.""Your secret's safe with me." He inserts the gasoline back into his bag. He looks at me. "Wanna come?" Slinging my own bag, I say, "Sure."Before we leave, we drag a new table into the empty space, concealing the burnt spot. Students linger in the hallways, with many relaxing in the open lounges. The sound of loud chatter follows us into another wing. We walk for a while, coming across a stone hall I recognize. We're heading to the male dorms."When you say bridges, what exactly ar

But just as I flipped the thick cover, I was met with resistance. With each repeated try, I grew frustrated. Until I turned the book over.A mystical binding. In form of a code combination. Who knows what the f*ck Faerin had used as her password.I need to see Ezra.Just then the door opens. My muscles tense immediately. Thinking fast, I throw a blanket over the book."Heya," Soph hollers."Hi.""How was class?""Good.""You had anything to eat yet?""Yes."She turns to face me. Her eyes narrow in dramatic suspicion. "Hmmm... Are you being an extra pain in the ass?"I roll my eyes, some of the tension leaving my shoulders. The dinning hall is packed in the evening. Once I spot Ezra, I wave. He strides over to my table. Sitting across from me, he smiles. "Hey."I le

RYLANShe takes wild jabs at me, stabbing the air each time I leap away. Now I land behind her and she spins around, face red from exertion and just the littlest bit of irritation. Falling into stance again, we start a slow dance around each other. My lips twitch."You won't be laughing for much longer," she says. She lunges, focused ruthlessly on my shoulder. Last minute, I block, knocking her wrist with the heel of my palm. The dagger falls to the ground and when she makes a dash for it, I grab her, pinning her to me with just the slightest pressure on her neck.I lean down. This time I attack, feinting a right just to place the tip of my dagger against the smooth line of her throat.Time suspends. When my eyes s

RYLANUsing my boot, I kick off excess gravel and sit. "Our professor says the first step to welding is getting pretty f*cking pissed."She blinks. "Pissed, as in drunk? Or, like, angry?""Furious. Foaming at the mouth."She lifts a brow. "Well, since I don't have rabies, do I still qualify?""Tough, but we'll see."I cross my legs, putting my palms face down on either of my knee in what is known as a thinking pose. Trees sway to the chilly night air, the sound of crickets and crinkling leaves breaking the silence from time to time. Emma mirrors my actions. "So what now?""Take a deep breath."Wrong idea. When she inhales, her breasts jut forward and I feel my mouth dry. "I didn't say suck in all the air," I snap. She trains a glare on me. I fit a key into the lock, opening the door to my room.We both walk in and I catch my gaze flitting around, wondering what she'll think about my space. I hear the quiet thud of her bag hitting the floor. She is dressed in black, her blonde hair standing out like a beacon. Her heavily-lined eyes look around and her footfalls sound as she goes to my bookcase. A finger trails along the spines of my books. When she chuckles, I scowl, feeling an odd emotion slither through me. What's so funny? She starts, "You know, I'd kind of thought that you were some kind of control freak. But seeing this..."An unfamiliar feeling whips through me. I discover it's self consciousness."Seeing what?" I ask, my skin knotting. She starts to point. "Your skate boards have the same amount of space between them, so do the trophies on your desk. RYLANThe mock tournaments mark the wrap of another semester. It's a series of playoffs done by opposing Houses in preparation for the main sports competitions. In mock tournaments or 'mocks', each team gets to weigh the skills of the counter House by undergoing challenges--in the hopes of mapping out a way to use it to their advantage. So it goes without saying that no one goes all out during mocks.Which is why Malkar's coach wanted to rip my head off when I went at Ezra with everything I had, giving him a black eye in the process.I don't want to look into what it is about the amber-eyed fiend that gets my blood boiling. But I know that with each moment I see him and Emma engaged in unending discussions, or laughing together at something either of them said: it f*cking grew. Each time he spoke to her, I wanted to tear his tongue from his skull."Rylan, are you listening?"I bring my attention back to Cal. "What?"He laughs. "The 'type gal' is right here." I cringe into the mirror once the words leave my mouth."I liked that Emma better," she says. "Now you're like some domesticated poodle."I whirl around. "You did not just call me a dog."She laughs. "Technically, you are. You're an animal shifter."A nervous laugh. "Yeah. Got me there." I go back to arranging my hair. I'd dyed it platinum blonde. I'm just in the process of sleeking the pale strands into a bun when she lets out a frustrated noise."Stupid f*cking wind!"I turn, seeing the drapes billowing. My eyes shift to her.
