All action seized.

Golden beams dotted around the giant hall, sapphire chandeliers and ornate marble statues glinting in the large hearth. Above the wide mantle sat a detailed painting of Necculea and its many seas. At another end of the hall, King Arhuk's throne stood tall and proud. At his feet sat nobles and members of his court. The ruthless king leaned over one jewelled chair arm, watching a sphinxe breathe fire into three hoops and juggle it. Only he seemed impervious to the stranger's intrusion.

"King Arhuk," the stranger bellowed into the silence. "I have a message from my brothers and sisters." He took off his scarf and gasps sounded around the hall. This seemed to catch king Arhuk's attention.

"A soul-thief. How ever did you manage to get into my kingdom?" To his earlier declaration, the king raised a blond brow, unimpressed. "You mean your dead brothers and sisters? Do you wish to share in their fate...? Oh." His eyes shone with cruel amusement.

I towel off soon after. When I make my way back into the room, I draw short on noting Enrico is back. My jaw tightens when I take in his position sprawled carelessly on my bed. Dimly, I trace the creases his weight makes, growing agitated. I look away, tapping thrice against my thigh on instinct. "What are you doing here?""Bro, chill. You look ready to chew my head off.""It's 8am."His lips purse. Crossing his legs, he settles deeper into the bed. More creases. Again, I look away. When I catch his gaze on where my fingers tap my thigh frantically, I withdraw them, feeling a flush rise up my neck. I scowl. Enrico only sighs. "Is this how you plan on getting with Sabrina?" he asks.Sabrina is my fate.Being a king's illegitimate son with no real future, Sabrina, a princess set to inherit a throne--a kingdom--presented something I've unknowingly clamoured for. EMMAI was five when I realized my imaginery friends weren't so imaginery.Across the long table, my mother delicately cut into her chicken. When she saw me watching, she gave a dutiful smile. It was strained.I could almost hear the thought directed at herself, 'Pull yourself together Samantha.' I'd heard her say it in front of the mirror often, when she wasn't aware I was peeking in through the crack in her door. It'd been a mantra since dad's death.Since then, she'd changed, gotten more sad. She didn't push me on the swings anymore."The pilot wants some of that," I'd said, a bit anxious to fill in the stifling silence. She paused mid motion. "What pilot, honey?"I pointed, like it was obvious.Bunny, a gangly man with a cracked pair of googles and a razed dress shirt seemed to stare at the food through his empty eye sockets. Things I didn't want to look too closely into writhed around the rotting holes in his body. I would see a bump form beneath his burnt blazer from time to tim

I was sixteen when I had my first and last kiss.Matthew was my dealer turned boyfriend--went to show the caliber of people I held in high esteem. He'd put out the question after we'd snorted three lines of cocaine. Romantic. "Hey." His voice sounded far away to my ears, slurred."Yeah?" I returned, tongue feeling like lead."Wanna do boyfriend and girlfriend?"I thought the question was funny."What's funny?" His voice was loosely laced with hurt."Nothing. The way you phrased..." I trailed off, a wave of lethargy pulling me under. I struggled to break surface, blinking against the dizziness. "The way you phrased that.""Oh, yeah?" A chuckle. "So what do you say? Be my girlfriend?"I smiled. "Sure, Matt.""Really?""Yeah.""Wow." A stunned chuckle. "I didn't think you'd say yes. You're so." A gangly arm lifted, making a careless motion in the air. "You're so up here, you know? It's fascinating. You give as good as you get. You know, with all the bullying..."The what? I blinked again

I was seventeen when I found out about my father. Some days, I found myself staring into space with the same question playing on a loop. Was I better off not knowing?I always did come up with the same conclusion. I shouldn't have gone down that f*cking attic. We'd left for LA soon after Matthew Gurney's death. His disappearance didn't leave our small town in a stir, quite the opposite. He was a nobody, his death swept under the rug for more matters the authorities deemed important, like scraping rich brats out of prison and vying to be on the payroll of a rich and morally bankrupt tycoon.Justice should have been served.I should have been caught. In my own way, I'd attoned for it. I'd quit the drugs, gone to rehab, and suffered through the withdrawals. I hadn't looked at a bottle twice since moving to California. But in the end, it didn't make any difference.A year of hard work went down the drain the afternoon I came across a box labeled memories.Wracks of cough escaped me once I

I guess history does repeat itself.EMMApresent day__It's the first time the auditorium has been this quiet.Posters and decorations still line the walls from the pep rally, happy and bright in their ambience--a large contrast to the painful swell of tension in the hall.Groans aren't heard, snickers don't sound from the juniors, and snide remarks aren't made by the usually loud football team. They're stone silent, features lined with the weight of a dreaded suspicion. They've lost one of their own. My stomach clenches. Principal Matterson stands on the raised podium, addressing the school. She holds herself stiffly, the sharp cut of her suit offsetting her stern expression."As you well know, Timothy Jackson has been missing for a few weeks. But with further investigation from the authorities, his case has been ruled out as mere disappearance." Her eyes sweep through the crowd. "It is now a murder investigation."The silence breaks. Straightening, she looks down at me, eyes taking in what she's, on many occasions, termed my trashy fashion sense. "Get dressed, we need to be at the airport two hours before our flight leaves."I give a light salute. She huffs. The door closes behind her and I drag myself up on wobbly feet. I grip the sink when my vision whooshes. I catch myself observing the crack in the mirror before I notice my appearance. I'm a mess. Green hair in disarray, black eyeliner smudged, skin ghastly white. I smack my face, pulling down on my bottom lids. I laugh when I see what I look like. The sound grows muffled when I pull my shirt over my head. Next, my miniskirt and fishnet stockings come off. Then I'm making it into the shower. It's quick. Later I head back into my room, throwing things into my carry-on. My phone pings. Grabbing it, I swipe up the message distractedly, still ransacking my closet. We break into the highway and I lean my back against the plush leather seats, staring out the window. I'll miss California. Somewhere at the back of my mind, it registers I'd said the same about Alaska.Buildings wheeze past. The park comes into view and I touch my fingers to the window, like I could reach it. It soon wheezes by too. Many afternoons were spent there with Caleb, swapping jokes and simply enjoying the nice LA weather, or working on a painting with him pestering me to reveal what it was because he couldn't sit through the countless shadings anymore. Moments like that made me forget.Forget who I really am.The airport is crowded with swarms of people and it's times like this I'm grateful to be a 5'9 giraffe because I quickly spot the shortest check-in line and make a beeline for it. Mum trudges along behind me, caught in a series of phone calls. God knows the number of meetings she'd cancelled to be here, which makes me wonder why she's really come. We'd headed to my ter

RYLANShe takes wild jabs at me, stabbing the air each time I leap away. Now I land behind her and she spins around, face red from exertion and just the littlest bit of irritation. Falling into stance again, we start a slow dance around each other. My lips twitch."You won't be laughing for much longer," she says. She lunges, focused ruthlessly on my shoulder. Last minute, I block, knocking her wrist with the heel of my palm. The dagger falls to the ground and when she makes a dash for it, I grab her, pinning her to me with just the slightest pressure on her neck.I lean down. "Always," I say against her ear, breathing hard, "have your full attention on your opponent, not on only where you aim to attack."Her elbows come down on my arms and she wrenches out of my grasp. I grin. "Impressive."She picks her blade off the ground, coming at me again. This time I attack, feinting a right just to place the tip of my dagger against the smooth line of her throat.Time suspends. When my eyes s

She really did choose the right colour. When I jump down. I hear her gasp. But she turns around and releases a loaded breath on realizing it's just me."You sacred me," she breathes."I'm sorry."I notice there are bags under her eyes and there's an air of sadness around her that I can't explain. My hand freezes mid air when the murmur of a crowd down below becomes audible.I rake my fingers through my hair frantically, desperately hoping I've managed to remove any evidence of being in the woods. Foaming at the mouth."She lifts a brow. "Well, since I don't have rabies, do I still qualify?""Tough, but we'll see."I cross my legs, putting my palms face down on either of my knee in what is known as a thinking pose. Trees sway to the chilly night air, the sound of crickets and crinkling leaves breaking the silence from time to time. Emma mirrors my actions. "So what now?""Take a deep breath."Wrong idea. RYLANThe mock tournaments mark the wrap of another semester. It's a series of playoffs done by opposing Houses in preparation for the main sports competitions. In mock tournaments or 'mocks', each team gets to weigh the skills of the counter House by undergoing challenges--in the hopes of mapping out a way to use it to their advantage. So it goes without saying that no one goes all out during mocks.Which is why Malkar's coach wanted to rip my head off when I went at Ezra with everything I had, giving him a black eye in the process.I don't want to look into what it is about the amber-eyed fiend that gets my blood boiling. "You did not just call me a dog."She laughs. "Technically, you are. You're an animal shifter."A nervous laugh. "Yeah. Got me there." I go back to arranging my hair. I'd dyed it platinum blonde. I'm just in the process of sleeking the pale strands into a bun when she lets out a frustrated noise."Stupid f*cking wind!"I turn, seeing the drapes billowing. My eyes shift to her.
