Chapter Seven

Emily followed Zach as weaved his way through the science center. She could see into the classrooms as each door was a glassed entryway, most were filled with students which made her stomach spin even more. Instead of focusing on the attention she would get arriving at her first class as the new student, Em concentrated on the guy walking two steps ahead of her.

What did I do to this guy that would make him act this way? We don't even know each other.

He is either stuck-up, shy, or not freakin' interested in talking to me.

Good thing he's taking me to this class because the science department is a maze of classrooms, labs, and teacher's offices.

At the end of one of the halls, Zach stopped and opened the door for her to enter.

Emily noted the classroom was quiet when they entered. Everyone turned to watch them, well, mainly her. There were only about fifteen other kids, but it felt like hundreds when all eyes were on you.

The teacher glanced up from his desk, which was situated in front of the room. He was an older man, slightly balding with thinning gray hair. He had on a blue plaid shirt and an anxious expression, similar to how Emily felt.

"Hey, Mr. Warner," Zach called out the teacher.

Wow, he does know how to speak after all! Emily was surprised when she heard Zach politely address their teacher.

"This is Emily. She's new this year." Zach pointed to her by his side. "I was showing her where the classroom was; that's why we're a little late." Zach sat down, leaving Emily in the front alone.

"Ah, Ms. Emily. Welcome to West Lakes and honors microbiology," Mr. Warner addressed her in a faint English accent. "Grab a seat anywhere and we'll all get started."

Emily glanced around the room, pinpointing where Zach was located. Of course, there wasn't an empty seat beside him, how convenient. She walked over to the next aisle beside Zach's and sat next to a girl with long blonde hair.

"Hi, I'm Paige," the girl whispered over to Emily as she got situated in her seat. "Let me know if I can help out. I went to West Lakes all my life, so I basically know everyone and everything about this school."

Emily smiled back at her. "Thanks, I will." It was nice to see some people who wanted to help and not feel obligated like Zach did.

Mr. Warner rambled for about half-hour regarding what the class would be doing and what he expected from the labs. Emily only listened for about the first five minutes. She was too preoccupied watching the other students. Okay, Zach in particular, wondering what was going on in that head. She felt a tap on her arm. It was Paige.

"Mr. Warner said we could ask questions or quietly talk."

'Wow! I must have zoned out. I don't remember anything he said.'

"So, have you known Zach very long?" Paige positioned herself in the seat so her concentration was on Emily.

"Uh, no, not really. We sort of were in the office at the same time this morning." Emily was wondering if Paige had something going on with Zach or maybe wanted to.

"I was lost on my way here, and two girls, Madison and Alex, stopped to help me. They knew Zach had this class, so he showed me where it was."

Like okay, end of the story. No great love story is going on here.

Paige still didn't appear satisfied but let it drop. "Madison Bennet and Alexandra Klaus have been good friends with Zach since he started here back in middle school.

Those four have been inseparable since. Have you met Danny Hernandez yet?"

Emily tried to think who that might be. "Is he the other boy that hangs around them? The tall, dark one?"

"Yeah, kinda weird. Most of the guys that hang around them are extremely gorgeous. Don't ya think?" Paige had a dreamy expression on her face.

"Yeah, I guess so. Um, are they all like together?" Emily tried to emphasize together without showing any interest.

"Nope, not really. Just all good friends from what I know." Paige looked like she was sure of herself.

"Not to sound as if I know him or anything, but does Zach always act so, um...rude?" Emily tried to find out if he was usually like that or if it was just her.

Paige's mouth hung open as her eyes bugged out of their sockets. "No, not at all. Why would you ask that?"

Play it cool, Em.

"I don't know. He was a little stand-offish."

He couldn't even say hello in the office or speak one word walking here. Sounds full of himself to me.

"Zach is like one of only a few boys in this school who isn't like that," Paige sounded a little on the defensive. "Now, his brother Jacob is the complete opposite."

"Jacob?" Emily questioned. She knew who he was but felt a need to find out more about these two.

Paige gave her a half-smile. "Oh, you would know Jacob if you met or saw him. I think everyone that is anyone has gone out with him at least once." She sounded a little infatuated as she tried to describe him. "He sort of looks like Zach." She scrunched up her nose as if in deep thought of trying to find the right words. "But, he's more of an animal. Yeah, that would describe him. He's athletic, funny, gorgeous, and has a perfect body. He has blond hair, well, sort of, and these deep intense gray eyes. His face is one you can’t take your eyes off." Paige looked smitten, and her voice trailed off as she spoke of Jacob.

Okay. Obsessing much.

"Have you gone out with him?" Emily asked curiously.

Paige gaped at her like it was rude of her to ask. Like, didn't Emily know who she was? "We went out once. Like I said, Jacob doesn't like more than one date with anyone." She spoke as though she was trying to convince herself of something. "I don't think he's ever been serious about any girl." She sounded as though she was questioning his motives.

"Have you ever gone out with Zach, if you don't mind me prying?" Emily hoped she wasn't digging up any old relationship feelings. She didn't know why she was so curious about this guy, who made it so apparent that he didn't think twice about her.

Paige's appearance was solemn. She slowly shook her head. "Zach and I never officially went out. He doesn't date anyone. He sort of hangs out with a group, like Danny, Alex, and Madison." She made a sneered expression when she said the girls' names, maybe a hint of jealousy. Paige recovered relatively quickly and gave Emily a fake smile. "Jacob and Zach are complete opposites, especially when it comes to girls. Zach doesn't want any, and Jacob wants them all." Paige had a confused and unhappy look as they both turned to checkout Zach.

Emily saw he was staring straight ahead.

What was he thinking, and why wasn't he talking to anyone?

I'll have to talk to Alex and Madison later. Maybe they can give me better insight into the mysterious Zach.

She tried to push Zach out of her mind and focus on something besides the guy seated in the next row.

Zach dropped Danny off at his house, which was like five minutes from his own. Now he had the task of pulling up their never-ending driveway. His father wanted a piece of property that was way off the beaten path. So, he bought a house with a mile-long driveway that weaved in and out through the trees. The house sat on one hundred and fifty acres of woodland. So yep, you could say they were pretty secluded from the world. As Zach got to the driveway's end portion, he noticed Adam showed up on time. He wasn't outside, so he must have already let himself into the house. The front door was unlocked, so he must have gone through this way instead of the garage. Although technically Adam still lived at home, he didn't sleep or hang out there much. He was usually with the rest of their pack, the ones around his age. But he had full access to the house whenever he wanted."Anybody here?" Zach yelled into the empty hallway when he walked in. There was no answer, so the next bes

It seemed the rest of the younger pack members, Jacob and his crew, were on high alert on the day of the alpha's arrival. They appeared to be more wired and less tolerant of other students, which could be a good thing since they had a big football game coming up.Zach felt things with Emily was going okay. He listened to Adam and allowed his wolf to have his way. Even though she showed no genuine mate interest in him, he still felt the need to watch over her. He hoped he didn't look like some stalker type and scare her off. He kept his distance but yet tried to appear friendlier than he was the first couple of days.***Although she'd been at her new school only a week or so, Emily felt content with how everything was going. She, Alex, and Madison were getting along well, and she was excited to be included in things they were doing, like shopping and planning on going to the football game on Friday. It was after six o'clock in the evening when the whole pack assembled at the Lovell residence. The boys' dad came back earlier in the day, but they hadn't seen him until now. There were about forty men gathered in the living room when Zach and Jacob came downstairs. Most they recognized, but some looked new to the pack. Their dad and his beta, Luke, who was Marshall's dad, were standing in the front of the room, speaking with two other elders. Adam and his smaller group were off to one side, waiting for the meeting to begin. The conversation between his father and the elders stopped as soon as the boy's presence was noted."What's going on?" Jacob was always the first to speak. Although they'd been taught not to talk to the alpha, beta, or elders while gathered as a pack, unless a conversation was initiated with them, Jacon constantly pushed the buttons for confrontation.Their father gave Jacob a warning look, and he took a step backward away from the group. Jacob ran until he knew he was far enough away from the house that the others wouldn't follow. He stopped once he reached the meadow's outlying trees on top of the hill, which looked down over the community park everyone with little kids enjoyed going to during the warm months. He knew no one would be up here since it was too steep of a climb for most mundane humans to climb. It wasn't an issue for him in either form, man or wolf. But being in wolf form helped to move quicker and smoother through the trees and narrowed pathways on the hillside. He sat on his hind-end and took a deep sniff of the air around him. Although his wolf had taken over during the heated moment back at the house, Jacob was fully aware of everything going on outside.'No...No...and no!'Jacob screamed at his wolf, who paid no mind to the rambling human part of him.'Don't do it.'Once again, Jacob tried to persuade the wolf not to do what he knew was about to

Jacob made it back home after the whole pack had finally left. He knew he'd have to answer questions from his dad and brothers, but that was the least of his problems. He quickly changed back into human form and grabbed the stash of clothes always available in the pool house. He crept alongside the shrubs and peeked in the windows of the main home. His father, Adam, and Zach were seated in the family room, waiting for him to return.'It's now or never. It would give him more private opportunity to talk to her and maybe break through the barrier not allowing her to act as his mate. The football banners hanging from the cafeteria walls and the windows all had team players and numbers written on them, courtesy of the cheerleading squad. Jacob had the front and center window all to himself, thanks to Brindle, Rachel, and Heather. The following morning, Lucas delayed opening the store as he took Cecelia home to get a set of her own clean clothes for the day. She’d put up a struggle having him follow her, but eventually caved in after he kept persistent about the matter for over twenty minutes.“Does everything look normal? Untouched?” Lucas glanced around at the sparsely furnished and decorated pile dwelling that Cecelia called home for the moment. The stilted home sat far back in the swamplands where alligators would be her nearest neighbor.“For the most part, yes. But we all know Rayne can put a glam spell on anything to make it seem untouched.” Cecelia rummaged through several drawers grabbing the necessities for a quick shower.“That is true. Rayne will do anything to cover her tracks. I’ll keep an eye and ear open while you take your shower.” Lucas stood by the front door and stared out into the vast land and water.“Alrig

It was a brief and basic answer. She wanted more as to how much he knew about their kind.Lucas saw the looks of conflicting emotions cross over Cecelia’s face. It seemed she was torn between telling him the truth or making up some outlandish lie. “I know all about the enchantresses of both black and white magic if that makes this all any better.” He hoped he just didn’t open up a whole new box if she had no clue what h

The electricity of their first kiss ripped through Cecelia. She had kissed men before, but this was one that no other could compare to. Lucas played with her by only allowing soft kisses until she wrapped her arms around his neck and forced them to be closer. His tongue lightly traced her lips asking for entrance, which she did without reservation. His hands that were once on her hips had moved around to fit perfectly on her ass. Cecelia softly moaned as his hips began to gently sway back and forth causing her to become wet in her panties.“Is this the type of business you are now offering, Lucas?”The sound of someone speaking halted both Cecelia and Lucas’s actions. They both knew who the voice belonged to, but neither knew that the other also knew Rayne.Lucas turned around keeping Cecelia behind him. “Rayne, it’s always a pleasure to see you.” He said this with as much sarcasm as he could put out right now. I have good connections that will probably allow us to bypass that line.” He took hold of Cecelia’s hand and led her in the opposite direction of the front entrance.“Where are we going?” As soon as Lucas led her back into the darkness behind the restaurant and away from the hustle and bustle that was going on in the front, Cecelia started to get a little anxious.“Right here.” Lucas knocked on the back door and waited for someone to open it.The back door swung open and a petite, beautiful woma

It had been two days since Cecelia went to the small store along the main street. She’d kept her presence in the Bayou hidden since venturing out the last time, never knowing when Rayne and her coven of black magic witches were going to poke their ugly heads up. Not that they were really ugly, quite opposite in fact. They were the most beautiful coven of enchantresses that she’d or anyone had ever seen, it was just their practices that were ugly.Cecelia’s cell phone buzzed to life with an incoming call. Only one person had the number and she’d given it to him as a gamble, which could have been deadly if he’d been a pawn of Rayne’s.“Hello,” Cecelia answered the call cautiously.“May I speak with Ms. Towne?” Lucas knew it was her as the sound of her voice had been floating in his thoughts for the past two days and nights. But he wanted this call to sound formal so she wasn’t so easily scared off b

Cecelia opened the back door of the small, wooden shack that was hidden amongst the cypress trees and swamp grass of the deep south. The heat, humidity, and musky smell rising up from the Bayou filled her senses as she walked across the pier that linked her small home on stilts to the mainland. She’d been in hiding since leaving West Lakes and knew this place would serve as a great cover. She'd left her home, her sister, and most importantly her niece, Madison, all alone at a time when she needed the protection of everyone in the coven. The dark ones, the enchantresses of black magic, would find her no matter where she took refuge. But, the seclusion and shadows of the Bayou would serve as protection for the time being. Cecelia had encountered those who practiced black magic when she was sixteen years old. Being of a rebellious nature and not wanting to follow in the steps of her older sister, she experimented in the dark, mystical essence that always seem

Madison opened her eyes. Wherever she was it was still pitch black and she couldn’t see anything in front of her. She still had some kind of rope binding her hands together and her ankles were crisscrossed and wrapped with some sort of material. Her whole body ached and she felt like she’d been in this prone position for years. She heard a door unlock and soft footsteps coming closer to her. She closed her eyes and pretended to be back asleep. The darkness that was once in front of her now had a soft hint of light. Whoever had come in obviously was lighting some sort of candles as she smelled a hint of burning wax in the air. Madison kept her eyes closed, but opened them enough that she could somewhat see. It took a few seconds for her eyes to adjust, then she could make out several details of where she was at. The walls were bare and seemed as if they were made of dirt. There were three candles in a smallholder that was placed to the side of her. A couple of empty IV fluid

Alex hadn’t had any more visions, even with concentrating and focusing as the elder had suggested, she just couldn’t get any read on what was happening with either of the two.“He’s still looking for Brindle, who has also gone AWOL since all of this went down.” Danny had picked up Jacob on a few of their tracking runs, but he still hadn’t come back home yet. “Have you talked to him?” He looked over at Zach, who seemed completely exhausted with all that had been going on.“Um, I saw him once like two days ago, but he wouldn’t or couldn’t shift back to talk. It looked like this whole Madison being missing is making him go insane.” Zach had only had the chance to track both Madison and Jacob twice this week. Emily, who was now confined to bed rest, had him up day and night.&
