Nix and Jael had come to check on Lia early the next morning. Jael had been worried because she hadn't heard from her best friend since training. Nix had been preparing for duty at the pack house when he ran into Jael. The friends decided to just go up to the Delta suite. James had a more open-door policy than the others.Dahlia woke up panting. Her nightmares were of vicious rogues and one very angry grey wolf. Nova hadn’t been strong enough. Lia had been too weak. It didn’t help that she wasn’t sure where she was when she woke up. She started to panic. “You’re safe, Lia, I promise,” Nova tried to calm her. “Scent the room, Lia. You’re-”Dahlia could hardly process the fact someone had rushed into the room. Three people had. “Shhh, Petal, it’s okay,” James said beside her. “Lia, it’s okay,” Jael said from where she had hopped up on the bed next to her. Jael looked up to where Nix was standing at the foot of the bed. James gripped Lia’s face. “Breathe, Dahlia,” James tells her. “
"What?" Lia gapes as she stares at the pack Gamma and her brother."No, I'm not leaving. James is hurt because of me. I have training and-""It's only a few days," Gamma Beckett says. "A long weekend. You'll miss one or two days of school and training. And this was James' idea.""He…" she pales slightly. "He's sending me away? Is this punishment?" Nash is quick to shut down that line of thinking. "Absolutely not," Nash puts a hand on her shoulder. "James can barely send you to your room. Gunnar doesn't let him.""But-""He wants you to have a fair chance to clear your head outside the range of your incomplete mating bond," Beckett tells her. "Somewhere you will be safe and able to sort out how you feel.""Oh…" she sighs. "George and Axel are not going to like that." James was putting himself in the crosshairs so she could get some space to think."George and Axel mauled the pack delta in the delta's own suite. He lost a say in this when he tried to rip someone's leg off," Nash practi
Lia gets out of the car and looks around. It's the middle of the night, and she can't see much other than the packhouse, and a few buildings. She has never been to this pack before.“Dahlia!” Her sister rushes over and hugs her. “You’ve gotten so tall. Riley, look at her!”“Hi Lia,” Riley says as he joins them. “Welcome to the Stanton Pass Pack. ”“Hi Riley,” she hugs him too. "Come on, let's get you home." Riley grabs her bags, and they head towards the pair's home. It is very late, so they show her to her room, and they all catch a few hours of sleep.Briar makes eggs and toast for breakfast the next morning, and after they eat, they give her a quick tour of the area and t
"Let's go for a run, like old times," Briar suggests. "When have I ever said no to that?" Lia grins."Probably never," Riley replies."Exactly," Lia says. At the same time her sister says, "Right!""You two go have fun, I'll get stuff for dinner and see you guys tonight."The afternoon is spent exploring the reserve. Both in and out of shifted forms. Nova enjoys the change of scenery while Lia does the one thing James asked her to do. Think about her relationship with George outside the mate bond. She tells her sister about everything. And Briar does her best to offer advice. Briar was the only sibling with a mate. So her perspective on the matter was important to Lia."The bond can be overwhelming in the beginning, I do remember that." Briar chuckles. "But I can see why Uncle James is so concerned. Your mate should love you and respect you, Lia. I'm not saying he has to worship the ground you walk on or put you up.on a pedestal. But he should repeat your autonomy and your wishes. R
James had told her she had the day off from school and training since she came back a day early. "I still want this to work," she tells James when she returns. "I want Nova to be happy." "And what about you, Petal?" James studies her. He was looking for any hint of doubt or fear. "What about your happiness?""I could be happy too, but I won't know unless we really try. Briar said to trust my instincts, to trust Nova.""Dahlia…your father always meant that for your survival. Not your happiness. You have to follow your heart to be happy. I’m not saying I don’t trust your judgment, Petal," James starts. "Just…just be careful. I will only ever be a mind link away.""I know," she smiles at him. "You know I love you, Petal, right? You are my family in every way that matters." She nods. She knew he did. He didn't say it often now that she was older, but he still showed it at times like this. "I love you too, Uncle James."Spending so much time around her sister and away from her goddess-
The next few weeks the two of them tried to establish some kind of schedule. She had school and training, they would have dinner unless he was on patrol. She would spend time with Jael and Nix a couple times a week, much to Jael's annoyance. She had dinner with James every weekend, as well as spending time with Saige and her dads. She tried to still find time for her brother when she could. He would sometimes join her and James for dinner. But it was becoming difficult to juggle everyone's expectations. It only got worse when the invitation to Tyler's birthday got there. George was not happy about it. "YOU SERIOUSLY EXPECT ME TO BE OKAY WITH YOU GOING TO THAT ALPHA'S BIRTHDAY?! ABSOLUTELY NOT!" Lia winces as George shouts at her. "He's a friend, and I promised him I'd go before he left," she tries to keep her cool. She refuses to match his temper. One of them has to be the level-headed one. "Before we were even mates." "NOT
James throws open the door to Oliver's office with too much force, and it slams against the wall. "How dare you-" Oliver growls, but the delta slams his fist on the desk, causing the entire thing to rattle. James does not care what he has to say. "I told you last time that if your son laid a hand on my Dahlia again I would not be so kind as to restrain my wolf." James glares at the beta over the desk. Oliver seems to rise to the challenge. "At this moment, she is at Hank Lane's house crying with bruises on her arm. From. George." The delta seethes. His wolf scratched at the surface. "The only reason I am standing here right now instead of hunting George down and making him pay for what he has done is because you and I have been friends for years. But I am losing my patience with that boy of yours, my friend. And I am giving you one last chance, Oliver. Deal with your son before I do! I am going to the Lane house now. I expect George to have learned his lesson by the time
James is surprised to find Luna Mira already there comforting Dahlia. Word must have traveled fast while he was in Oliver's office. "Luna Mira," he greets. "James," she nods. "I was just telling your little Petal that she has every right to be upset. She has every right to cry." The Luna tone is filled with sadness. "But she is so strong and brave." Mira smiles at Lia. "Do not ever let anyone, man or wolf, even your mate, ever take that from you. The goddess, Selene, has not forsaken you, for you are still a child of my pack. One that has made us all so very proud." The Luna takes James' hand and puts Lia's in it. "Some families are what we make of them. The ones we choose to love. The goddess gives these bonds as much as she does the bond of a mate. And this is a bond given by Daphne and Linus. They trusted our delta to protect it. And looking at you n
