When she didn't immediately pick up the gauze pad and her eyes glazed over like she was going into shock, he nudged her hand again and pushed the gauze pad towards her. She shuddered and looked down at her hand, picked up the gauze and then met his gaze.

"What ARE you? You're not real, this is some sort of fucked up dream I'm having."

After this last statement, the wolf just looked at her and chuffed, blowing little flecks of blood all over her hand and arm. He carefully opened his mouth just enough to grab the edge of the gauze packet and tore the corner open. Looking down at the packet, she shuddered again and removed the gauze from the wrapper.

"Alright, alright! I get it. I'll cover the wound with the gauze. Now stop blowing blood all over my clothes."

She unrolled the gauze, folded it into a square patch large enough to cover the entire wound, and taped it into place.

"I don't know if this tape will hold with all that fur, but it'll stay there as long as you don't try to get up."

She gave him a stern look that a mother would give a child, and the wolf rolled his one good eye in response. At seeing the expression on the wolf's face, she laughed for the first time since meeting this strange beast. Taking a closer look at his face, she grimaced and hissed.

"There's a splinter of wood in that eyeball. God! I bet that hurts!"

He just gave her one of those 'Duh!' looks and lowered his head to the ground. She twisted around and reached into the first aid kit to retrieve the additional items necessary for this next bit of treatment. Sliding over to his head she sat down and crossed her legs. Patted her thigh to indicate where he should place his head.

"Come on, let's get this over with. That splinter needs to come out or it will get infected and then you really will be in a bad way."

He rose up and she scooted forward so his massive head would lie on top of her thigh.

"Shit! I must be crazy to let you be this close to me."

Funny, I was thinking the very same thing, the wolf thought to himself as he laid his head in her lap. She twisted the cap off the bottle and just before pouring it onto the wounded eye; she met his gaze.

"This might sting a little, so don't freak out and bite me or anything, okay?"

He grunted and closed his eye. Gently, she poured the saline solution into the wounded eye, washing out the blood and mucus.

"This is the part that's really going to hurt, but I have to do it."

He grunted again and kept his other eye shut. He felt the tug and then the sensation of the long sliver being pulled free of the eyeball. Finally it was over and the relief was immense. He released the breath that he had been holding and gave a giant sigh of relief. She poured more saline into the eye and then began to put a gauze patch over the wound.

"Now you look like a pirate."

After she said it, she laughed. He opened his good eye and looked up at her. Then she really started laughing as she realized how totally bizarre the whole situation was.

He started to get mad over the fact that she was laughing at his pain. Then he stopped, and soaked up the sound of her laugh. It was so nice to hear a female laugh, especially one that looked this nice. He finally let go of his tension and slowly closed his eye, slipping down into unconsciousness.

She was sitting on a campstool looking at the giant wolf as it slept. What the hell was this thing? This wasn't just an oversized example of the breed; this thing had intelligence, a frightening amount of it as a matter of fact. She was trying to come up with an explanation for what had happened over the past three hours, but nothing made any sense. She finally discarded the notion that this was some sort of elaborate hallucination from some plant she might have accidentally eaten. No, this was real. There really was a giant wolf sleeping in front of her.

Then she remembered some twisted science fiction/horror novel by that Koontz guy about a genetically altered dog and a twisted mutant gorilla. Was this thing an escaped government experiment? Was that why it had been shot? Maybe they tried to get rid of it but it had escaped before they could put it down and get rid of the evidence? No way! That crap only happened in books and movies.

This was REAL! R-E-A-L REAL!! It was lying right in front of her. Then what? Reincarnation? That dopey professor in college said that many religious groups throughout the world accepted reincarnation, in one form or another. But weren't one of the things about reincarnation, the fact that the previous life was forgotten and the wheel of life turned again? Or was she mixing religions? She wished she had paid more attention in class, but that professor was creepy and she had never really wanted to know that much about religion. The only reason she had taken the class was because someone had told her it would be an easy A.

She finally decided she would have to find out more about this amazing animal before deciding what it was or might be. Well, at least it wasn't going to eat her. It was a good thing she had just emptied her bladder before stepping out of that bush, otherwise she would have pissed herself right then and there.

As for the other, HAH! She had seized up too tight for a fart. Damn! This thing was HUGE! It must weigh 250 pounds, at least, maybe more. Its head was twice the size of hers and when it had been standing there it almost looked her straight in the eyes, and she was tall, 5' 10" without boots on. The color of the fur was strange too. At first she thought it was a solid steel gray, but the more she studied it, the more she noticed that there were several different shades of gray mixed in, and they shimmered as she shifted position. No dog or wolf breed she ever read about had that kind of coloring. After watching the wolf sleep for an hour, she realized she hadn't had anything to eat yet. As quietly as possible, she opened up her backpack and pulled out a food bar. As she sat back down on her camp stool and started to open the package, the wolf opened one eye, looked at her, then closed it again and went back to sleep. So, it doesn't trust me either, she thought. Well, I can't blame it,

The indignation in her voice made her sound almost petulant. The wolf closed his mouth, looked her right in the eye and started moving his head up and down. Now it was her turn to open her mouth and gape like a fish. He turned his head, nosed the bandage on his side then looked back at her as if to say, 'See how helpless I am, now feed me.' He opened his mouth again and stuck out his tongue. She started laughing again, shaking her head and proceeded to feed her strange companion the rest of the beef jerky. When it was all gone, he looked over at the empty water bowl and then looked back at her."Jeez! You sure are pushy!"He grunted and nodded at her again, she started chuckling and moved to fill the bowl with water."I hope you fully appreciate what I'm doing for you. I don't normally wait on anyone, especially some oversized dog!"When she said that last sentence, she heard a rumble behind her. She spun around to see if she had finally gone too far and was now about to be mauled to

She was suddenly very nervous and concerned for her safety for the first time since this morning. He sensed this immediately and started whimpering, trying to convey his sincere apology at making her afraid of him. He lowered his head, setting his chin on the ground. She understood what he was doing and relaxed, dropping her arms to her sides, but she still didn't approach him."Why did you look at me like that? Did I suddenly taste like food?"He raised his head up off the ground far enough so that he could move it back and forth, indicating that he didn't think that."Alright, then. I'd appreciate it if you didn't do that again, okay?"He moved his head up and down this time and chuffed, letting her know that he did understand that she didn't like that. With that understanding between them now, she walked closer to him, but stopped just outside what she thought his reach with that super long tongue of his could go. She raised her hand towards his muzzle, and he gently licked the end

It had been awhile since he had seen one in this part of the forest, but when the humans stopped killing them, they had slowly migrated back into the area. Now the bears were a nuisance; they were extremely territorial and they don't like to share. Well, hopefully this one will keep walking and pass them by, but he knew deep down, it wouldn't. Bears treated campsites like an instant snack source, which the foolish humans just kept providing. The bear finally caught wind of him along with the food, it started growling and huffing. Stercus! That damn thing wants to fight instead of passing by. Well, there goes the healing process. I hope this one isn't one of the big ones, maybe I can just growl a few times and it'll get the idea that this is one campsite it will have to give up on. He slowly got up and slithered out of the tent, making sure he didn't disturb her. He didn't want her to panic and scream. That usually just pissed off the bear and made the screamer a target. He wanted to

The bear shuddered and let loose one last spasm of fight, but it was over. The bear fell to the ground, carrying Damien with it. They landed with a huge thud; as almost three thousand pounds of muscle and bone combined hit the ground. Damien had twisted his body along the bear's side to keep from getting smashed. He kept his hold on the bear until he was absolutely sure it was dead. When he couldn't feel a heart beat for several seconds, he let go. There was a slurping wet sound as he removed his muzzle from inside the wound. He had done it!! He had killed the beast! Commodum habitus es Asinus! I own your ass!He was so relieved that he had killed the bear and saved her from certain death. He was so proud of himself that he went right to the tent flap and stuck his head inside to share his joy. A beam of light suddenly blinded him and then she screamed and passed out. O Stercus! He had just scared her right out of her mind. He felt like a complete dumbass, Asinus stultissimus; yep, th

"Wha-" she squeaked, cleared her throat, tried again."What happened to your wounds? They are almost completely healed. Your eye is normal. That shouldn't be able to happen over night. The hole is sealed; grown back. How?"He shrugged with his eyebrows. Still not daring to move anything more. Then she turned and looked at what remained of the grizzly, waving her hand in the general direction of the carcass."And this? How? Nothing's meaner than a grizzly."Again, he shrugged with his eyebrows. She took a tentative step towards him. He scooted back on his belly, keeping the same distance between them. That made her stop. She looked into his eyes and understood what was happening. He was scared of her, or more accurately, for her. He didn't want to show anything but utter submission to this woman. Her vision blurred as her eyes overflowed with tears. This great big giant of a wolf had not only saved her life, but he was trying to make peace with the fact that he had scared her senseless

His only response was to croon softly, causing her blood to run fast for a few seconds. Then he stopped when he realized what effect that was having on her. Ever so slowly, he stood up and backed away from her, standing just out of arms' reach. He stared off into the deep forest, listening to the birds as they began to sing again. Just having that much space between her and him, felt like a chasm had opened up in the earth. She didn't like that feeling at all. She wanted to touch him again, have him touch her again. When she started to reach for him, he curved his body away from her outstretched hand and took another step away, just to make sure."Don't. I want to touch you. I have to touch you. I feel so empty when we can't touch."Her eyes began to water and she sniffled. He saw it out of the corner of his eye. He brought his head back up, and looked at her with a 'who? me?' expression."Jesus Christ!! I thought I was having a hard time trying to fight off 24 years of cultural stigma of doing anything with you, but then I see that. My God!! That wouldn't fit, even if I wanted to!"He let her blow off some steam. He knew that actually, it would fit. Several past experiences had taught him that. As a matter of fact, there was that one woman in his past who absolutely adored it, no, craved it! What was her name... Catherine? Then he had a mental flashback of her face. Whew! Gods! She had been ugly, but she loved to fuck her beasts. Then he remembered that she had graduated to horses and he had left before he became twisted. No way was he going to take sloppy seconds from some stallion. The hiss from his left let him know that his ruminations of the past just might get him in trouble again. He looked at her to see what she was hissing at. Oops. Once more the shaft retreated into its sheath."Is

"I forgot to eat dinner last night and camping always gives me a huge appetite. I'll burn it all off before the day is over. Well, maybe. You have brought some horses but when I go camping, I'm always on foot. So I normally hike ten miles in one day when I go out.""Oh, okay. Yeah, I'd eat that much too if I was going to hike ten miles."Gab just sat there and grinned as he sipped his coffee. Marcy and Elena finished their breakfasts almost simultaneously. They washed their plates and cleaned out the skillets. Gab doused the fire while Elena and Marcy drank their coffee. She watched Gab as he saddled the horses. She was still nervous about this exercise. She didn't know if the horse they would try to get her on would stand still enough for her to do so. She went through her calming exercises in her head, trying to still her nervousness. She figured that if she didn't feel nervous, the horse would be calm as well. They finished their coffee and went over to where Gab was waiting for th

This was the truth, so she knew her voice wouldn't detract from her excuse. They both stared at her a few seconds; and then at each other, they shared a look together before they turned back to her. Marcy was the first to break the silence."I'm sorry to hear that. Again, I didn't mean to embarrass you."Gab was looking at her, and she could see that he was mulling something over in his mind; finally he shrugged and grinned."Well, I guess if you're willing to forgive our lapse in manners, then I'm willing to forget about it and just enjoy the weekend with a new friend."Elena smiled and let out a big sigh of relief."Thank you. I'm sorry too, I should have warned you, but it slipped my mind in all the excitement and rush to get out here."They all smiled their relief at the averted social faux paux. They started chatting about the next day's plans and Gab reassured Elena that she would be just fine around the horses. Eventually they all yawned, Marcy first and then the other two in s

Elena blushed again and she saw Marcy shoot a look at Gab that was a mixture of surprise and annoyance. Goob just grinned and shook his head. He had wanted to surprise his wife with his new friend, and it had worked."I surprise a lot of people, Marcy. So don't feel embarrassed about it, you should have seen Goob's face when I shot that rifle for the first time and just grinned at him like a kid at Christmas. He didn't know what to say or do for a minute there."Marcy laughed and nodded, immediately taking to Elena's easy-going personality and humor."Yeah, I've managed to do that to him a couple times myself. Let me just get the rest of the food into the cooler and then we can hit the road."Marcy went back into her kitchen and Elena waited with Goob."Okay, Elena, we're heading for a friend's ranch and the roads are almost non-existent once we get into the higher elevations. Here's a radio for you to use so we can stay in contact if we get separated. It's got a 12-mile range out on

Damn, but at least with this one I can clean the outer shell of any accidental blood stains and re-proof it with a can of repellant. Hopefully it will pay off in the long run. Yes, I'm leaving but Rhoda won't be there to ruin my mood anymore. Charlenne proved herself to be as smart as Elena thought she could be. She had no trouble getting her acquainted with the software, but she needed to find some inspiration with the graphics layout. That's where natural talent comes in, you are either inspired or you are not. It's an artist part of the job, and this was where Charlenne had the most difficulty."Honestly, Elena, I've never thought about art or graphics. Can I take a class or something?""Well, yeah, you can. However, this is where you need to let your imagination flow and try to feel for the client. Find out what they are looking

He got out the paperwork for her to fill out and he called in her ID and information and the NCIC check came back clear. He put the sling kit on the rifle and slipped it into the carry case and handed it to her."I do have one more favor to ask, if you don't mind?""Miss Brandt, anything for the lady who can shoot a Rossi .454 Casull and smile."Elena laughed."I need to find somebody who can teach me how to hunt and skin the animals. He smiled at her confident response. Well, what the hell? Why not?"Okay, so you won't need a scope or at least a big one.""No, no scope. My eyesight is perfect.""Okay. Any preference on caliber or action?""Nope, that's where I need your expertise. I've never hunted before, but I really want to learn.""Okay, great. Well, in that case, um, have you ever shot a rifle before?""No, but I'm an expert with a H&K Tactical .45 ACP."His eyes widened again and he started laughing."Okay, I had that coming, sorry. Well, if you don't have any preference on action or caliber, I'm not sure where to start. How about I show you a couple of standard hunting rigs and you tell me if it's something you might be comfortable with, okay?""Yeah, that'd be great."He reached back on the rack behind him and pulled off a bolt-action rifle with standard iron sights. He handed it to her with the bolt open. She hefted it and put it to her shoulder. She looked at the bolt and then slid it forward and down, l

"There you go mark, all your troubles are answered. It's my resignation. I quit."Elena turned, went to her desk and gathered up her things before heading for the door. Rhoda had just heard her announcement and she was pissed. She had wanted to get Elena into trouble and here she was walking out before that could happen. She had hoped to get her fired, but by quitting, Elena still held the high ground."Elena, wait a minute. Why?""Well, mark, I have had it with that little bitch over there. I was in a perfectly happy mood when I came to work today. But when she jumped me three seconds after walking in and implied that I was trying to get her fired because I wouldn't let her finish the interview, which by the way, lasted over two hours yesterday. Then she had the gall to grab me physically, which I told her was a really bad idea and to not ever do it again. Since I was planning on it anyway, that just put the icing on the cake and instead of in two weeks, I'm out of here today.""She

It's like if we don't say it, it won't be true. Yes, Marie, once a month my PMS goes all to hell and I turn into a werewolf.""Yeah, okay. I guess maybe because I haven't seen you like that, it really hasn't sunk in.""Trust me,. Until Damien teaches me to control the shift, to become aware inside myself when I've shifted, you don't want to be anywhere near me. Elena nodded that she had and took it out of the fridge for her. She finished cooking her bacon and eggs. She then smothered honey-butter on her toast. Marie watched her in awe and still wondered how she could eat so much. When she wiped up the last of the egg yolk with her toast she popped it into her mouth and hummed contentedly. She sipped her coffee and felt the rush of caffeine hit her system. Marie sipped hers and smiled, Elena had been right, it was very dark and very rich but it wasn't bitter at all."Well, now that I don't have the raving urge to fill my mouth with eggs and bacon, we can talk. I saw that look, and I'll eat that for dessert, now hush. I want to run an idea past you, but I don't want you to feel pressured in any way. I'm thinking of quitting at the Acantha and trying to find something in Helena."Marie beamed and snickered."You're trying to see if I want you to move in with me, aren't you? Well, the answer is YES! I would love it if you would move in with me."
