Claire spent more than half of the flight sleeping off all the acohol that she had during the wedding reception, While Henry worked on his laptop during the better part of the trip. It was strange, how different they both were and how they seemed to just fall into two separate routines.
When they arrived at Bora Bora, Henry had gently woken Claire up as they got ready to land. She looked out the window and gasped. Claire, being a travel blogger had surprisingly not been to Bora Bora before, she had thought it overhyped at one point but then looking out the window, she could understand why people were willing to spend a large chunk of their life-savings just to make a trip to Bora Bora. It was really like a little piece of heaven on Earth – she didn't know how else to describe it.
Henry seemed to be just as mesmerized but more quiet about it as they both looked out the window.
They had barely said anything of note to each other during the trip and ever as they arrived in Bora Bora, they didn't say anything to each other.
Henry could sense the excitement on Claire's face as the plane descended through the clouds. As they broke free of the last cloud, a magnificent vista awaited them: a massive multi-coloured lagoon bordered by lush green atolls, the fringes of which broke the waves from the open ocean, and a mountainous island in the middle crowned by steep lofty peaks.
What a sight!! Claire thought.
The airstrip was on one of the atolls, which meant that they had to take a boat to where they were heading. They were met at the arrivals hall with more garlands and ushered to a waiting boat.
Their luggage was taken care of, Claire's luggage had been packed last minute. Two of her cousins had assisted in buying some new clothing and beachwear for her and packed it up while the reception was ongoing.
They were whisked away into the lagoon to the resort, the Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island. The boat ride to the resort was nothing short of stunning. The colours of the lagoon and the shape of Mt. Otemanu kept changing as they sped along.
Awesome. Claire thought.
They were greeted at the resorts pier by the lovely Rebecca and a guitarist who also doubled as the resorts bouncer and were served ice cold Tahitian beer. Henry promptly refused his but Claire didn't hesitate to start drinking hers.
"It's lovely." She said and Henry nodded.
She sighed as she rolled her eys, did he plan on ignoring her throughout the rest of the trip?
She thought as she got a good look at him. He was wearing a beach shirt and cargo shorts, the sun seemed to hit his face and hair in a way that made him look golden.
"'I know we don't like each other that much but we can at least try to be cordial throughout this entire trip."
Henry paused and then nodded.
"You're right. I'm sorry if I seem to be a little distant. I have a lot on my mind."
Claire nodded, she had seen him working on the plane. It could have been work related stress.
"Is it work?"
She asked and he nodded.
"That...amongst other things yes."
Claire shrugged as she put on her sunshades.
"We're in Bora Bora now. It's a vacation, you should take some well deserved time off, honeymoon or not."
Bora Bora was quite beautiful. Claire couldn't quite put her foot on why exactly it was, maybe it was the mix of the lagoons breathtaking shades of turquoise, aquamarine, sapphire, emerald, fluorescent green and electric blue – she could spend a day or two there just trying to get her mind around the myriad of colours; the impressive rock face of Mt. Otemanu that towered over the whole lagoon; the crystal clear water and pristine white sandy beaches; the low-rise resorts that gave the place a very exclusive feel with their idyllic thatched roof overwater bungalows; the constant scent of frangipani and tiare Tahiti the national flower that was used for almost everything; and the fact that they were in the middle of the South Pacific!
While Claire admired the resort, Henry sorted out their reservations.
He came back later a few minutes later.
"I took the liberty of getting us separate bungalows, I know you'd very much like your own space."
He said as he handed her her keys and a tour pamphlet. It contained a list of activities that they would be doing daily.
"I'm still next to you in case you need anything."
He said and Claire nodded. She didn't mind if they spent the whole vacation apart, in fact she was very much content with exploring the whole island on her hand and documenting it for her blog. The freedom of it all, she loved the sound of it.
She smiled at Henry.
"Thank you."
The little bungalow had a large bedroom and bathroom; a living room with a coffee table which featured a glass floor, making it possible to see the fish in the clear water below; and two decks, an upper deck in the shade and a lower deck with deck chairs and steps which led down to the water, Claire could imagine going snorkeling right off the deck and an outdoor shower.
As excited as she was to explore she was also really tired and would very much like to rest. She picked up her phone and scrolled through her notifications, more than half of them were filled with congratulations, from friends who didn't know she was getting married, to her socials buzzing with excitement at the news with a lot of peple being confused as to why Charlotte wasn't the one who got married. She didn't care, her parents had a publicist for all that who would clean up whatever mess that Charlotte had made, it wasn't her problem to worry about.
Her father on the other hand had gifted her one of his property for her business, something that she had been requesting for months and he had also sent a fat check into her account that had her grinning from ear to ear.
After about an hour of scrolling through social media, Claire settled in her bed to sleep and fell asleep.
Henry had been working to distract himself. The events of the last two days had been deeply troubling. He had been in his room, getting prepared for the wedding when his mother had broke the news to him. He had laughed it off and called Charlotte, she didn't pick up. He had sent her a text the night before their wedding.
It had read.
I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you. I know you think we're moving too fast but the past few weeks with you have been amazing. I love you Charlotte.
That was the very first time he told her that he loved her and he regretted it deeply, more than anything in the world. He had been staring outside the window, wondering where it had all gone wrong, trying her number every second that passed till his father came to announce to him that the wedding was still on.
How? Why?
Charotte was missing! He had screamed. His father didn't care, he cared more about preserving the family name than facing the embarrassment that came with calling off the wedding.
Several calls were being made to locate Charlotte and get her back in time for the wedding, Henry was too weak to protest. He left everything for his parents to handle. He was too shattered to even care.
Then his father walked back in his room with a smile on his face.
Charlotte's twin sister would take her place.
He was grinning from ear to ear, as if that was really a solution to his broken heart, as if that would be enough to mend the damage that had been done.
And when Henry was still downcast, his father had walked up to him and patted his back.
"Have you really fallen so hard for her? Don't worry, her sister looks just like her, you'd barely even notice."
"They're all the same anyways."
His father muttered as he walked away.
As if that would help, as if it was any consolation that her sister would be the splitting imagine of Charlotte, as if that would mend his broken heart.
They were not the same person.
The very moment he laid his eyes on Claire that was the very first thing he noticed.
They were not the same.
The next morning, Henry was awake sooner than he had expected, he had not been able to get a good night's sleep even though his bed was as comfortable as it could be.He walked out of his thatched roof bungalow and immediately saw Claire in the water, she was taking a dive in the clear water. She looked happy and peaceful. It was early, the water must be cold, he thought as he went back in his bungalow to get her a robe.He always knew that Charlotte had a sister but Charlotte rarely mentioned her. In the words of Charlotte, 'Claire's rarely ever home and we're not close.'Charlotte claimed they had a difficult relationship, and had mentioned that she wasn't even sure she was comig to the wedding despite her parents extending an invite to her. When she had walked into the church, Henry had seen her, for the very first time. And while he could see that they looked very similar, Claire was different. Her features were sharper. Her skin was
"Henry..."Charlotte said and Henry nodded. One could see the pain that was in his eyes, it was hard to miss. "I called you so many times, left several messages, the least you could have done was given me an explanation.""I am so sorry?"Henry chuckled."See, that's the thing. I don't know what you're sorry for, for getting caught or for jilting me and leaving me at the altar.""You could have said no, I would have been rational about it, I would have understood. You didn't.""You just kept stringing me along while you had your devious plan in mind.""I'm so sorry Henry, I didn't mean for it to happen this way..."Claire watched uncomfortably, the way he talked, the strain on his face, he had loved her sister. Or still loves her by the looks of it. Was that why he was cold to her? Distant?Seeing her must have reminded him too much of Charlotte. Claire walked away, the conversation was too hard for her to listen,
"Us?""I don't understand."Claire said as she turned to him and he nodded. "I know. I know, but we need to talk about us.""You know the kind of situation we're in. And we both know that we aren't willing particpants to this marriage."Claire nodded."It was either I get married or go broke. I didn't have much of a choice."Henry chuckled and then nodded."We can still live happily together, even with nothing between us."Claire raised her eybrow, she liked the sound of whatever he was suggestuing,But was was he even suggesting?"I am going to need you to elaborate further for me Henry."Henry nodded."I'm just saying, we should make things a little but easier for ourselves. We don't have to force feelings or anything. We can live separate lives while staying married.""Discretely of course."He added and Claire nodded.Hnery gulped hard, it was hard to gauge Claire's reaction when she was giving him
They were back in San Diego. After one more day in Bora Bora they had left the beautiful breathtaking island. Back to real life!Claire thought as they arrived in front of Henry's estate. It was stunning, like most of the houses in Rancho Santa Fe.Someone came to help them with their bags while Henry decided to give Claire a tour of the place."This is stunning."She commended and he nodded as they walked in. "I bought it a few months ago."The house had a kind of sophisticated elegance and welcoming ambience to it that emanated throughout the impeccably maintained and pristine five bedroom residence."Impressive! Did you redecorate?"Henry shook his head."I kept the original design. It has more charm."Well it certainly did, Claire silently agreed. The double doors revealed a two story foyer with impressive chandelier and grand staircase. The living room was dramatic in Claire's opinion, it featured a stately f
The dinner was just what she was expecting, over the top, too much champagne and some unfamiliar faces. Not her usual scene either. One thing was certain, the Laurents knew how to throw a party, a totally unnecessary one though. Claire thought as she sttuggled to keep her cool. Henry was next to her being as charming as always, he didn't seem to mind. Meanwhile Claire was bored and tired. "Claire! Claire!"Someone called and she turned around and saw an unfamiliar blonde woman waving at her, she turned to Henry for help and he smiled. "That's my mother. You met her at the wedding remember?"Honestly Claire couldn't be too sure, she had too much to drink during the wedding party that the events of the day and the people she saw were all hazy in her mind. She couldn't remember her."Oh. I'm sorry, I'm not really familiar with her. I only saw her one during the wedding and..."She trailed off. Henry squeezed her hand in comfort."It
The best part of the party for Henry was seeing his brothers. He had barely seen the, before the wedding and when they came for the wedding, he was so caught up in his own problems that he couldn't catch up with them. They had a lot to catch up on and then his parents had invited some of his old friends over and they were drinking and talking and having a blast. He had thought having a party was a terrible idea, but he was enjoying it and he understood why his parents threw him a party. They wanted to make him feel happy and comfortable, after everything he had been through. He felt a little guilty because he promised Claire that they would leave after making an appearance but in his defense, he had looked around and didn't find Claire and he had assumed she was having fun or talking to his family. She must be at the bar, he thought as he looked around again. He was still talking to some friends when Allison Parker walked over to him. She looked every bit as beautiful and
"Poor Claire.""I can't imagine how she'd be holding up."Macey said as she took a small bite out of her macarons. She closed her eyes to savor the test. She had not had macarons in a long time and the bakery had some. Even though she had been very hesitant to try anything, she made sure that she tried the macarons."Her family is shitty for pulling such a stunt." Kendall said as she took the last puff of her weed and dumped it in the ashtray, she had gone to the bathroom for a quick smoke.Macey waved her away. She looked at the menu again, she supposed she could try something else. But everything looked sickeningly sweet. She wasn't sure she was in the mood for any more sugar. "Tell me why you plan on getting high so early this morning?"Kendall shrugged."It helps with my stress. And I'm very stressed out this morning.""I'm not really worried about Claire. Knowing her, she's probably planning her own escape."Kendall added and Macey nodded.
The next few days went by in a blur, Claire and Henry barely saw each other. Henry left early for work, so Claire didn't get to see him and Claire stayed out so late that when Henry was back he was fast asleep. They didn't have breakfast together and they certainly didn't have lunch with one another. Claire spent her days working on her new project and her nights partying with her friends, sometimes, she'd stay late enough at Kendall's place just so she wouldn't have to meet Henry when he was coming back from work. It was already their routine and Claire was comfortable with it. Henry looked at the watch, it was almost time for lunch break, he was leaving work early, mostly because he had planned to see Allison. They were going to have lunch together and catch up. He had forgotten all about it till she called him two days ago to follow up on the statement she made. He agreed, he did need a break. Henry had been working at his f
Claire planned to spend the next couple of days working from home like Henry advised. At least till the whole gossip died down. Their parents had been angry nonetheless but she had apologized appropriately and Henry had even taken part of the blame when he had nothing to do with the issue in the first place. He was sweet, so sweet. Claire continued working on her project, she was desperate to finish it before the next summer. She wanted to open it during the summer, she believed that would be the best time to open it. She was in talks with a few other people about the place, it was going to be awesome. For the first time in a long time, she felt fulfilled. She was working on something, something that she had always wanted to work in and it seemed like things were going according to plan. Splendidly well if she would add. She finally had a project to work on, something she could call hers, something that was growing. It was a wonderful feeling. It kept her occupied. She also didn't
"What the fuck?"Claire thought as she looked at the article that Kendall sent her, someone had taken pictures of her at the party, picture of her dancing with a guy and a stupid blog had carried it and titled it, 'Trouble in paradise? Claire Branson Laurent newlywed seen in a club dancing with another guy' It was her, it was unarguably her. But why though? She thought as she rolled her eyes. If her parents or Henry found out she was going to be in a lot of trouble. They already had enough dealing with Charlotte eloping. She started texting Kendall, hoping to get the article taken down as soon as possible before it garnered more attention. People were already sending her the links to the article on her social media asking her if she was the one in the pictures, she left their messages unread. She would reply them after determining the best way to handle the situation. She was still freaking out when someon
