Morowa.
That day in Kampala where I had ate my first rolex. Not the watch. The local street food of Uganda.
The street full of life at night. All the available clubs were open for business. People moving in all directions kind of like a confused ant colony but I knew they were anything but that.
Manny booked an hotel close to the airport so I practically had to drag them out of their comfort zone.
"Okay okay, we'll come along only because we don't want to search for you when you get carried away." Manny had said this with a smile, happy that she could find some entertainment there too.
The music was something between pop and reggae and in a language I barely understood but I didn't care.
I was just happy and excited to be here at last. The lights of different colors illuminated the streets as people talked and laughed together.
It was different here. Back at the hotel everyone was distant. Here, I felt like even if I managed to get lost somehow, the people won't hesitate to help me.
"Beautiful isn't it?" asked the smooth yet rough voice of a stranger.
He had the strong accent of the people of Kampala but I didn't turn to look at him because of the view of the city at night.
The cool night breeze kissed my hair and skin in atonement for the once hot and scorching sun which had almost given me sunburn earlier (welcome to Uganda).
"Yes it really is." I had agreed with a nod feeling my curls do a little cheerleader jump against my forehead.
"I'm Akiki." he had replied while I turned to look at him.
His dark skin practically glowed under the soft light of the balcony which was on the third floor of this shopping complex. My stomach flipped in acceptance.
"I'm Morowa." I introduced myself maintaining eye contact as I took in his physique; white shirt stretched over his herculean chest, in direct contrast with ebony skin making his features even more obvious. Tall and built like a warrior but I knew he was anything but that. Hair dark as night, pulled back tightly into a ponytail resulting in a prominent face.
"Morowa." He repeated my name the way the locals said names with the intonation of their mother tongues. "Queen."
"Queen?" I inquired searching his starry yet shadowed eyes.
"That's the meaning of Morowa." he answered before breaking eye contact with me and concentrating on the view of the little people below us.
"And what's the meaning of Akiki?" I asked because I was also curious.
A dazzling smile arrested his features causing a one sided dimple to come on full display before giving me an answer. "Akiki means 'friend'."
Fate had brought us together then. I'm a queen and he's my friend.
A faint buzzing interrupted my thoughts. Buzzing? From where?
Akiki was still saying something but the beeping kept overshadowing his voice until his voice became the beeping itself.
I felt my body changing from the leaning position on the rail until I was on a soft surface with soft light penetrating my eyelids.
Wait. The beeping is my alarm and Akiki was in my dream. Urrghh. Why do I have to wake up?
Rolling over on the bed so I was lying on my torso, I reached for my alarm clock which was on the bedside table of my bed.
I hit the top of the digital device making the annoying sound come to an end.
After feeling around for a while, I found my glasses, slipping them on, I peeled my eyes open to glance at the clock. 7:45am, the red box display said. Seven forty five?.
No, no, no. I can't afford to be late, there's a pop up quiz today and I'm still in bed? How?
Flinging the thick duvet aside and running to the bathroom, I put some toothpaste on my brush, stuck it in my mouth, grabbed my shower cap because drying my hair would take at least thirty minutes which I didn't have to spare and step into the cold shower (cold to wake me up properly).
After using the towel to dry myself I practically ran to my right into the closet.
What to wear, what to wear. My eyes only scanned my mess of options before I decided that I would need every ounce of confidence today, I studied all of Manny's hand picked clothes.
I really can't decide on what to wear. Groaning I tied the towel at my chest tighter to prevent it from falling.
I started walking while running my hands over the numerous clothes. How many clothes did Manny get for me exactly?
The number of clothes a young girl like you needs.
I don't need these, I mused while using my eyes to search. My eyes finally landed on it.
A yellow colored dress with small Daisy designs all over and long lace sleeves. I can do with that right?
Not giving myself room to argue with my thinking again, I snatched the dress of the hanger, picked up my black flats which I only wore to Val's and went out of the closet.
After slipping into the dress, I noticed to was a dress shirt, so I buttoned it leaving the first two open.
After brushing my wild hair and putting it in a bun, I grabbed my bag which had laid peacefully beside my vanity and exited my room.
"Good morning." I say once I enter the kitchen heading straight to the breakfast table.
"You're wearing that dress I bought." Observed Manny as she flipped pancakes fast after noticing I was kind of in a hurry.
I rolled my eyes at her happy tone. I honestly never thought I would live to see the day I wore one of her dresses but I have to admit, this dress was very comfortable with the sleeves covering my hands up to my wrist and the bodice fitting snug against me.
My only problem was the length. It felt a tad too short for me. It ended about half an inch above my knee which was short on my list.
"Yeah, I guess I am." I confirmed shoving the pancakes in my mouth and taking a sip of orange juice.
"Wow." Val said in apparent awe. She was sitting on one of the bar stools I had sat on yesterday. "You never told me you looked this good in dresses, if not I would come over every morning just to force you into them".
"Gee, thanks Valentina, you really do know how to make a girl fell special." My comment dripping with sarcasm and she decides to ignore me, adjusting her scarlet hair behind her shoulder as today she didn't wear it in her signature bun.
She had put on some clear lip gloss and a little mascara, making the yellow flecks on her emerald eyes pop.
"You're wearing makeup, that's new." I stated before narrowing my eyes at her. "So that means the date went well?".
The smile on her face instantly dropped and she looked everywhere but at me at my question.
"We'll talk later but right now, we need to run if we don't want to be late." I said as I stood up and placed my cup and plate in the sink.
I walked over to Manny who was silently watching the interaction and hugged her inhaling her minty smell.
She always smelled like mint even in the kitchen where she's meant to smell like onions.
I don't really have parents (well I did). They died in a car accident while taking a trip to the supermarket to get groceries while I was at home with Manny.
Even if I never knew my parents, Manny would always tell me about them. She returned the gesture happily.
"Bye M." Val yelled while being dragged out of the room by yours truly.
In comfortable silence, we ride to school. Images of children, people, animals are all a blur with the speed I'm going at.
"Slow down, Mowa!" Val practically screamed at the top of her lungs, momentarily rendering me deaf. Her hands clutching any part of the car visibly stable.
Stepping on the gas, Val jerked back into her seat with a now flushed face mixed with horror and fear. Talk about drama.
"I swear, Mowa, if we don't make it to school alive, I will murder you in ghost form!" She threatened like it would have an effect on me.
I may prefer being alive and lost in a book than going to a party of sweaty teens with horrible music but behind the wheel, is another story. My need for speed resulting in countless speed tickets which I have no problem with and besi-
"Morowa!"
The image of a girl not older than five with large shocked and dazed eyes stood in the middle of the road.
With instincts kicking in, my foot clamps down on the brake pedal, jerking me forward with the seat belt pulling back instantly.
"Are you okay?" Her voice sliced through the inside of my now immobile car.
I almost hit that girl. I almost killed a person. The image of me laughing at Val during Halloween flashed through eyes. No. I don't ever want to be that man. I couldn't possibly be that man. Not now or ever.
My body reacting on it's own accord, pushes the door and takes worried strides towards the shocked girl.
"Are you okay?" I asked crouching to meet her eye level.
"Are you o-"
"Debbie!" I woman yelled from behind us. The little girl's eyes snapped in the direction of the be voice, her far away eyes glazed over with unshed tears.
Her voice came out in a small inaudible squeak,"m-mommy?"
The woman, moved closer, shoving my shoulder harshly to take over my crouched position in front of Debbie. Her hands skimming over the little girls body as if in search of danger.
"It's okay," she comforted with a soft voice almost cooing, "mommy's here princess."
Engulfing the still dazed girl for what felt like the thousandth time, her now moist eyes settled on my no doubt guilt stained face.
"I-"
"Thank you," she said. "For taking care of my baby."
Gratitude joined the mix of emotions on her face.
"It's no problem." I couldn't bring myself to confess to the mother of the girl that I was the reason her daughter was in this state in the first place.
"Can't you watch where you're going?!"
I clammed my eyes shut, pushing the voice of that one person behind my mind. Fear of being that one person caused my knees to tremble.
"Morowa, let's go," Val's voice sliced through my thoughts. Her warm arms encasing me in a tight hug. "Everything's fine, you didn't so anything to her, she's fine."
The girl and her mother, no where in sight.
"What if I had?" I couldn't help questioning myself, my voice coming out in shaky notes. "She'd be dead by now and I wouldn't be able to live with myself."
"But you didn't Morowa, you didn't, " she persisted, rubbing my shoulders, "you stepped on the brakes in perfect time."
Her eyes reassured me with a gleam of concern tinting the golden flecks.
"Yeah, I didn't," I try reminding myself with a nod, "but I won't take a ride in that." I nodded towards the vehicle which almost tasted human blood a few moments ago.
A breathy laugh escaped her lips,"definitely."
"Rowa!" A familiar male voice called. No. Not him. I don't feel like seeing him and especially not after my initial shock at almost taking the life of a human.
"Keep walking and don't look at him no matter what." I whisper yell at Val as we increased out pace with the view of the school's simple yet sophisticated structure made itself known to us.
"Hey, you can wait for me, you know?!" He panted.
At last.
Devin. Her voice came out in a soft whisper beside me. "This is just breathtaking. I'm impressed."Hair dancing to the tune of the wind like a snake to an animal whisperer. With one of her eyes a hazel colour and the other the natural brown colour, she could easily be classed a freak of nature but that's not the case at all.People just don't understand that she is rare and you don't judge rare because of their conflicting eye colors. You accepted then because they were one in a million.I squeeze her smaller hand tighter, enjoying the warm heat she radiated. The beach was just a few feet below us as we stood at the rocky cliff. How we even got here is a mystery to me though."As am I." I replied without looking at the view which she was openly admiring.S
Morowa."Have I ever told you your eyes are to die for?" gushes Sky in a high pitched voice trying to imitate a crazy fan girl."You mean my eyes could kill people with shock?" I raised an eyebrow throwing my head back to laugh. I liked my reputation in school for one thing. No one judged me for anything and the normal gossiping only happens between Kris's circle which I'm sure Sky is part of but that's really not my business if I'm being honest with myself."You know I always wondered who your parents were because of your conflicting eye colors" he sighed as he placed his chin in his arms still in the fan girl act."My parents" I mumbled trying to conjure up any image of them but it's always a failed attempt seeing that I was too young when they passed. "They went to the sky
Warren."What do you think about the school trip?" Kris asked from beside me. She twirled one of her curls on her index finger."I think this trip is some opportunity for teachers to slack on the job." I said before looking at the front of the class and taking a glance at the door. Why is class always lacking the teacher until thirty minutes into first period? I'm lazy and all but that doesn't mean I don't want to learn."I heard there's even a whole tour on the tower." quipped in Vivian, one of Kris's friends in a way, even though she's not as mean or scandalous as Kris while looking at me from beneath her faux lashes."Yay." I said with enthusiasm as fake as her lashes. "What if—""Don't ruin our mood with your what ifs again." Ken cut me off from my other side."Besides, this trip could b
Morowa.Golden flecks buried deep in hazel orbs, he finally asked the question I was sure lingered on the tip of his tongue. "So you're coming right?""I don't think so." I replied reluctantly. It wasn't that I didn't want to see him play but I didn't want to send out the wrong signal. The whole female population would have my head, if they found out that Sky, the popular of all popularity (no pun intended) had personally invited me (a.k.a unknown individual) to this game and I actually loved my head no matter how much the hair could be a pain in my butt on a good day."So that's a maybe?" He still had a hopeful glint in his eyes."I'll think about it." I said after closing my locker to get a good look at him. "Why do you want me to be at this game so bad anyway?"His expression remained blank but I knew he was ha
Vector."Yeah, and that touchdown at the last minute was totally unexpected." Callum smacked the surface of the almost metallic table of the booth we occupied. "You should have seen Fraser's face."He went ahead to immediate what only looked like the expression of a chocking whale to me.Laughter erupted from the throats of everyone in the booth causing the air around me to vibrate.I didn't even know why I agreed to come here if this was all they were going to do. Like I wasn't at the game too. We all were."So who's the beauty you came with?" Aidan, who had added only two words to the banter finally asked.Heads turned including mine to concentrate on the girl who sat beside Sky, her bronzed skin looking air brushed to although visible stretch marks could be spotted, it only added to how real she looked. Her d
Warren."So what is this proposal you have for me?" Benjamin cut to the tea of the matter because formalities were definitely not his line of expertise."I know you help my father with his work when he wants to discovery a mole in his business." I spoke before taking a sip from the hot coffee on the table."Yes, I am on a strong professional relationship with your father and his business but I don't know what exactly you could possibly want me to do for you, " he replied before picking his cup and repeating my earlier actions.Mr. Boyer was definitely the man job with his professional approach to everything. His eyes light and curious. He looked at everything around him
Morowa. You know that one time in the night or early morning when you feel like sleep escaped from your life or it suddenly went on a vacation when you needed it the most? That's the only explanation for being awake right now.'2:18am' the red glowing lights from my alarm clock displayed.I had been counting the invisible dust motes in the air for what felt like forever. I needed a distraction. With this in mind, I picked up my glass case from my bedside table, opened it and slipped it on my nose. There was no way I was going to lie here and be bored out of my mind. So I was going to do something about it.Why don't you just read? But that was it. I didn't feel like reading. After slipping my feet into my Pokémon slippers (yeah, you heard right), I exited my room, takin
Devin."Stop that!" Mom warned and backed it up with a powerful whack on my fingers."You know I love you right?" I diverted trying to distract her.She smiled. "Nice try.""What?" I cocked an eyebrow stretching my hand and attempted taking another cookie when an unexpected hand smacks my hand away.Ezra (my immediate elder brother by two years) dimpled at me. "I don't think you should do that.""What do I care what you think?" I whined before pushing my lower lip out in a pout."Mom, just one," I held a finger up, "and I'll be fine."A snicker comes from the door accompanied by the little devils themselves."Give it up already, will you?" Quinn inquired without sparing me a glance and drinking from a cup."Yeah bro." Agreed her second half.Maybe I
I grabbed a handful of the sodden earth and sniffed it."I don't think ma would've liked to see you do that," Warren objected. I flicked him off and took another huge whiff of the scent.I heard grunting and after a few pants, felt a touch on my shoulder. His straight face came into view and the orange light behind him created a halo around his head. "You ready?""I'm sure this is what ma would've wanted." I breathed in and tried to relax my stiff shoulders when Warren picked up the ceramic vase. After he settled into the same kneeling position beside me and we just sat in silence. My mind strayed and I felt he did the same.I would never get over what she did. Not fully but I had that mutual understanding that she felt she was protecting us anyway she could. Admittedly not the best decision as this is where it had led us to; her on the other side and both of us hurting and shattered.
Wriggling my toes in the wet sand, I smiled up at the sun feeling like a kid at Christmas. My shades flipped over my eyes and I smiled at the redhead beside me. "You know, you don't have to be so grumpy on the beach.""Uh, yes I do," she said. "Someone has to be the adult here."I smirked and wrapped my hands around her, stopping further movement and eliciting a yelp from her. "Oh yeah?""Yeah." She bent her head to the side. An open invitation and how could I resist? I lowered my head and dropped a kiss on the curve where her neck met her shoulder earning a shiver in return."No need to get all touchy, people!" The shout made Val jerk in my grip and our heads collided at the sudden movement. "Let's try to keep what goes on in the bedroom, in the bedroom please!""Yeah, we have children in our midst so keep it light and PG." Devin backed her up and I could hear them snicker behind us.After our initial shyness after the graduation cere
*ONE MONTH LATER*Wild cheers tore through the field and caps flew in the air as our graduating set hugged each other with wide smiles plastered on their faces."Congratulations!" Warren crushed me into a hug threatening to cut off my blood circulation but I wouldn't have it any other way. "Told you we'd make it."The huge eagle of happiness and pure joy in my heart only allowed me to nod, smiling widely. Before I could say, Jack, Val snatched me away from his side and right into her tight hug. "Omg, we made it, Rowa!""Yes." I squealed with her as we both jumped multiple times while holding hands. "Now you can give my baby brother the kiss he's been dying for.""Shhh." She covered my mouth with her hands, her eyes wide. After peering over my shoulder, she tried to conceal the vivid blush on her cheeks. "Remember I'm taking things slow.""Slow, shmlow," I scoffed waving my hand as if throwing the idea away. "It's just one k
Deep and varying shades of the sun set set the dark brown of his eyes off , the warmth of his palm over mine a silent reassurance he didn't plan in going anywhere anytime soon. His silence said it all while he waited for me to sift through and try to solve the puzzle of emotions clashing against each other, demanding my attention in my mind."Who would've guessed it?"Even with my eyes concentrated on the miniature view of the city below us and the cars, lights, people, movements seemed to take slow motions but I knew they hurried but it made no difference from this distance, I noticed his head tip back and he drew in an audible breath. He didn't give me a response, silently urging me to continue. I sigh and found his hand giving it a small squeeze."Who would've thought my creep would turn out to be this annoying being beside me."That drew a silent chuckle from him and he tightened his hold in my hand. "True." He
Glistening and bouncing light off each other, both rectangular caskets stood beside each other. People gathered around a few feet away from them as we all bowed our heads waiting for the Reverend to say the final prayers. My eyes felt ran out of tears as I held unto my new brother's arm like a life line cause I felt the earth would shift from under me if I let go.I just met her and we hadn't even connected the way a mother and daughter should and this happened. Her eyes, similar to mine, shone in my mind as she smiled up, warding off the chill of the world around me."I'm so sorry.""My deepest condolences.""She was such a strong woman, unfortunate really.""Are you sure they're even really twins, what if the boy was adopted?""What an unusual pair."All whispers, good and bad were directed at us even as we paid our homage to our mother. Hard to believe that she really laid insi
Ariana's voice came out loud in the void silence of my room as I searched for the blasted phone with my eyes closed, raining curses on the person calling me at this time of the night."Warren speaking." I rubbed my eyes still facing the ceiling."Hey son, your mother is having an episode of coughing and is spitting out her guts and we're in the way to the hospital right now, please meet us there beca—." He literally yelled threatening to destroy my ear drums while an engine revved in the background followed by coughs."Dario, the road!" Her warning drowned his voice before a the line dropped with silence."Dario!" The phone bug into my face where I breathed down the mouthpiece praying nothing bad had happened. My hands dailed his number again, my fingers slipping in the wet screen from my sweaty palm. Nothing added up. Zhurah coughing and the line cutting off abruptly?
Different fragrances and colognes mingled and mixed together with the movements of men in suits and women in long or short evening gowns and huge bonnets perched on their heads. At the top of the stairs, her eyes searched the room hoping to meet the only people that mattered to her at the moment. A hand on her shoulder distracted her sight from the massive double doors left ajar with guest spilling in to the vast room to stare into his concerned gaze."They'll be here."Easier to say and harder to believe."I don't know, I'm not worried about Kovu, it's Kara." She glanced at the door again."You still haven't told then their real names have you?""They're not ready."He stepped behind her, nuzzling her before placing a kiss on it. She relaxed into the huge, warm man with a sigh. His head still lowered, he slid his hands over her hips pulling her into him to feel his ha
His head rested against my lap, a comfortable weight while I ran my singers through his thick locks. Who would've thought my creep would be this guy. This intelligent, beautiful, caring guy with the most enchanting eyes."Why are you looking at me like that?""Like how?""Intense." He sat up and faced me on the large couch. "Like I'm gonna vanish into thin air.""What if you do?"His laughter filled the room and I breathed in concentrating on the sound. He didn't get it. Everything that had happened up took this point and he still stood beside me laughing at my question. Might sound cheesy but I couldn't imagine another day without him. Like a drug, he became addictive. My addiction."I won't," he said with conviction. "And even if I did, I'd hold you so I won't disappear alone." "Great plan."We laughed at our little inside joke and I attempted to braid his hair but only came ha
Mary decided to throw a little party to celebrate her united family and maybe bring her children closer to her.No mater how much she demanded their attention, they always acted aloof around her. Of course they paid her the due respect she needed but she wanted more than that.Dario's hands twirled one thick strand of her hair while she was drowned in her thoughts."What is it Amour?" He asked after noticing her absentminded state. "If you don't want to throw the party, it's fine, we can cancel it.""No," she rushed out and bit on her lip. "That's not the case."He changed his position so he could squat in front of her. "Then what is it?"Mary sighed. She wasn't planning on spoiling his mood or anything but it was chewing in her insides and threatening to reduce hey to nothing is she didn't speak."It's just I can't help but feel like my children don't want to get closer to me."His wor
