Summer POV
My chest heaved my body ached as if I’d been beaten with rocks. Something wasn’t right. I shot up from the soft bed and adjusted to the dark room. It was too dark to be my basement room. The upper window on the right that let the moonlight in was missing. I swung my legs off the bed and stood. I willed myself to scan my surroundings but… it didn’t work.
Sometimes I forgot what I was now.
Barefoot I slowly found my way to the wall. I patted the space looking for a switch but instead, I found a door. I rattled the handle but it wouldn’t open.
“Dad’s going to kill me.”
Why was the room so dark? I walked cautiously back to the bed. I patted my jeans and my phone wasn’t there. I grabbed my sticky shirt. I froze. Half of my shirt was gone.
“Crap.”
I gasped when the door jiggled. I crawled backwards and hit the bed. Light burst into the dark room. I hugged myself to cover my naked belly. The man in the centre of the doorframe took a step forward. I swallowed the lump in my throat. He was over six feet. I barely made out the colour of his hair –blackish brown— he flipped on a switch and kicked the door shut.
“Want to talk now?” He barked.
His green eyes held venom. He wore a vest that showed off his massive sculptured arms painted with black and white tattoos.
“Where am I?”
He chuckled, “I’m the one asking the questions here sweetheart.”
“I’m not going to give information to a stranger!”
“You’re the stranger in my pack, sweetheart.”
I swallowed. His pack? He could be a high-ranked beta or worse. The Alpha. Dad wanted me to stay clear of the Alpha for as long as possible. I’m dead as soon as I get home.
“All right, we’re going to try this again? Who are you, rogue?”
“I’m… I’m not a rogue.”
He rubbed his bearded face and chuckled. “You’re not one of mine I would know.”
I guess I was a rogue but I couldn’t tell him where I came from.
“You got yourself a nasty cut from your partner there.” He stared into my eyes it made my cheeks turn red.
“Partner? They attacked me!”
“And you fought back? Interesting. What’s your rank?”
I swallowed. I sucked my lips in.
“What’s your rank?” He barked.
“Uh…”
A knock came at the door.
“What?” He barked without taking his eyes off me.
“Roman’s going crazy. He lost something.”
No! I’d been gone all day.
The man shut his eyes and rose. “This isn’t over, little one.”
Little one? I frowned. He did look like he was over seven years older than me. Dad didn’t talk much about the Alpha at least when I was around. He slammed the door shut. He was crazy if he thought I would be here when he got back. Dad would tear the pack up looking for me. I grabbed a chair from the desk in the corner and tucked it under the doorknob. My shoes were gone. Good one on their part.
I pulled open the curtain and watched as the Alpha and a couple of his men climbed into massive SUVs and drove off. They wouldn’t be dumb enough to leave a prisoner in the house alone. I pulled up the window and peeked out of it. Thank goodness I was on the first floor. A beta wolf was situated at the front door. It was now or never.
***
I came out of the bathroom at the same time the door upstairs slammed so hard it rattled the house. Dad was home. I pulled on a sweater and long pants to hide the cuts I got from running in the woods.
I slipped into some socks after gathering my courage and making sure my lies were in order.
“I knew that girl was trouble, darling, we had a simple plan,” Marcella said before I entered the room.
I rolled my eyes and stepped into the living room. Marcella my stepmother had over-the-top platinum blonde hair and wore six-inch heels and designer clothes. Rachel was more similar to Marcella in terms of materialism and Jade had her mother’s sour attitude but at least Jade wasn’t fake. Rachel didn’t live with us but she was here a lot which was a reason I couldn’t have the upstairs bedroom but I didn’t mind. The basement afforded me with more than enough privacy.
Her daughters were in the living room as well when I entered. Silence fell in the room the second my presence was felt. Dad’s wild eyes landed on me.
“Well, there she is Roman. I told you there was no need to worry.” Marcella smiled at me.
“Excuse us,” Dad rasped.
“But Roman—”
“Now Marcella,” he deadpanned.
Rachel stood first. “I have things to do anyway.”
“It’s not like we won’t all hear it,” Jade said as she marched up the stairs.
She had a point. Rachel left out the front door and Marcella made it as far as the kitchen.
“Uh… hi Dad?”
He took one threatening step forward. “Hi, Dad? That’s all you’ve got Summer? Are you fucking kidding me? I nearly tore this town apart looking for you.”
“I was looking for a job. I went out and lost track of time. I’m not a kid.”
“Why didn’t you answer your phone when I called?”
I bit my bottom lip, “I was busy like I said.”
He took another step forward and lowered his voice. I wanted to believe there were some things he chose not to tell his wife.
“Who did you speak with?” He asked.
“I’m not dumb enough to go around telling people my issues.”
“You’re a smart kid, Summer, but death is a possible consequence for a wolf like you.”
“I know.”
“You need to trust me, Summer.”
“I’m tired of being locked up. I’ve accepted my fate you should too. Can I go now?”
“Kid…”
“Dad?”
“You’re not leaving this house for the next two days.”
“What? You’re grounding me? You know I’ll be twenty-one soon right?”
“The full moon’s coming. The shifters ran wild in this town. We can talk again after that.”
He marched off leaving me alone. I sat on the couch and held my head in my hands. My Dad was a general in the army he would hear about a she-wolf escaping. Coming here, the deal was for me to lay low. After what happened in my mother’s pack I was walking on thin ice and at any moment I could fall through the ice and freeze to death.
Summer POVA knock came at the door. I barely left my room since Dad grounded me. I’d only seen him a handful of times since then. From what I overheard the borders weren’t stable and they were expecting an attack. I used to love stakeouts and a good ambush. I wouldn’t be doing any of that anymore.“Come in,” I said.Marcella strolled into my room. She grimaced for a second before turning her smile back on.“Darling Summer, I have good news.”“You do?”“Yes,” she grimaced again.I battled my giggle. The stench of damp wood was getting to her. I got used to it and the occasional rat visitors.“You don’t have to make dinner tonight!” She clapped her hands.“Are you going out?” I asked.“Yes… we are.”We? Marcella barely included me in family issues. I was her husband’s daughter but I was as good as the maid around here.“Where are we going?” I asked, slipping my legs off the queen-sized bed.Marcella walked around and stood under the window. “To the winter lodge twenty minutes out of to
Summer POVDad was gone early the next day and the ladies weren’t back from their shift vacation. What did I wear to swear my loyalty to my new demi-god Alpha? Something that covered every inch of my skin so when that dumb mark appeared he wouldn’t see it. Unless it showed up on my forehead. I wouldn’t put it passed the Moon goddess she had a wicked sense of humour.Since I lost my phone I would have to find a job to replace it. Now that Ezra knew I was here I wouldn’t have to hide. I grabbed a few help-wanted flyers and stuffed them in my bag. The Alpha’s house was a ten-minute walk from home. When I arrived beta wolves marched in and out of the property as young ladies giggled with trays of food mostly meat and fruit walked into the house.Dad’s truck was parked in the driveway. Of course, he had to be here. I took a deep breath and proceeded.“Can I help you?” A man stopped me at the door.I took a step back. My breath caught in my throat and memories spiked my brain.“I…uh…”I wil
Summer POVI contemplated telling Dad I got a job as a waitress. If things hadn’t gone South, I would have been under him as a subordinate. It was a dream one that almost came true. Like I said the Moon goddess has a wicked sense of humour.“Where are you going?” Dad raised his brow from his coffee mug.“Uh… to work.”“Summer…”“Dad, we spoke about this. I’m not a kid. I need to make my own money.”“Under my roof little girl, you’ll go by my rules.”When would he stop treating me like a child? I placed my hand on my hip and stared him down.“It’s a bar. Nothing’s going to happen to me.”Dad set his mug down and scratched his four o’clock shadow. “A bar, Summer?”I nodded. “I’ve worked the job before. Please, let me try to live a normal life.”“I guess that’s okay, I’ll always keep an eye on you. Did anything show up when you swore your loyalty?”“No, I guess not yet.”He dumped his cup in the kitchen sink. “Keep your eyes open. I can’t keep you here forever and we damn well can’t keep
Summer POVMarcella and the girls were back I didn’t want to play happy family. I ran to my infested basement and locked the door. I needed a cold shower but when I came out dripping wet the ache hadn’t gone. An ache there because of someone I shouldn’t give a damn about.“Ugh,” I slapped my face. How could he mark me? He practically told the shifter world that I was his which I wasn’t. He must have marked me when he stuck his claws into my hand. In the shifter world wolves had a way of telling which wolves were taken. It was effective on male wolves only. Most male wolves didn’t care but Ezra’s an Alpha and touching someone marked by an Alpha was a death sentence. What did it mean to belong to a man like Ezra? A mature man with a stare that could freeze anyone. Blake was a young Alpha and Jacob was a young beta but each thought they were on top of the world.Just thinking about them made me start hyperventilating. It’s over now, I repeated over and over in my head. He can’t hurt me.
Summer POV“Should we be playing cards?” I asked, shuffling the cards.Wren gave me a pressed smile, “You just don’t want to bet your tips for the night.”I laughed, “Of course not I need a new phone.”“I need rent. Deal them Summer,” Hector rubbed his hands together. I put my feet up on the stool this was the only opportunity I had to relax once the sun set we were all screwed. A lot of us anticipated great tips. I wanted to buy a new phone by Friday hopefully I could maintain my old number.“I’m not dumb enough to bet my tips,” I said.“Neither am I. My ex-boyfriend’s busted scooters in my garage. I have that,” Marley said.“I’ll take it!” Hector said.Marley laughed maniacally.“Ten bucks and that’s as high as I’ll go.”“I’ll take your ten bucks, deal,” Wren said.I dealt the cards I wasn’t confident in my cards. I hope I hadn’t just given away ten bucks.“Where is everyone?” Ezra barked. We dropped the cards, slipped into our shoes and scurried into the dining area. Ezra stood be
Summer POV“Don’t touch me.”I slapped his hand away.“I’m going to do more than touch you, human. I’ll lick, spank and fuck.”“Get lost!”He chuckled and backed into my space. “Can’t you take a hint?”“I like it when they fight.” Before I could react Ollie grabbed my right arm and dragged me two feet to his car.“No!” I kicked his knee.He ground his teeth and chuckled. What?“Save it, sweetheart. We can bite all we want in my hotel room.”“You’re disgusting.”The street was quiet and the lights flickered. The darkness felt like a mocking laugh. I would be kidnapped without a witness to stare apologetically. No, I might not be a wolf anymore but I was trained to fight.I twisted Ollie’s arm and kicked the inside of his thigh. He bellowed into the night. I stomped on his foot and ran for dear life. I dropped my bag and pumped my legs to the limit. Ollie’s rough hand grabbed my shirt and yanked me back. I rolled on the concrete and scraped the side of my head.“You little bitch,” Ollie
Summer POVI jolted awake just as the hooded man was about to grab me. Sweat stuck to Ezra’s shirt and hair stuck to my face. Early morning sun seeped into the bedroom. The rain had gone when I peeked out the window the entire backyard was drenched in water, dirty puddles were scattered all over the yard. After washing the sweat off my face I walked downstairs.“Early bird, I see,” Ezra groaned as he emerged from the couch in the living room.“You slept on the couch? I thought you said you would sleep in the spare room.”“I didn’t say that.” Ezra stretched his arms and twisted his back.“I would have taken the couch.”His hair was ruffled and curly, different from the silk pushed-back style he usually has.“Come,” he said.He patted the spot beside him. I settled a safe distance from him. He reached out and brushed hair behind my ear and thumbed a bruise on my cheek.“Thanks…”“Don’t. Just don’t.”“But if you—”“Summer, I said don’t.”“What do you want me to say?”“Nothing. Let’s go e
Ezra POV“Ezra.” Hunter marched in.“Brother,” I said setting the glass of brandy down.I was more of a scotch guy but I thought I would change things up today. My younger brother of three years settled on the leather seat in front of me. I was at the pack house. I was rarely here these days I found myself at the bar longing for a petite human girl.“What’s up with you?” Hunter asked.“Can’t a guy have brandy?”“Sure. We found something you might want to see.”“Yeah?” I raised a brow. “What?”“We found rake venom.”I sat up, my fingers curled around the glass. “What the hell? Where?”“By the lake, if that stuff made it into the water there’s no telling the damage that could have happened.“They’re trying to kill us,” I murmured.“Yeah but who out of all the packs?”There were thirty-one packs in the country and all of them banned the rake venom. It’s a drug but it’s also a venom. It could make you faster and give you better night vision it was addictive and it messed with the ability
Summer POVWhy did I agree to dinner again? Right, I was starving and anything to do with food sounded like paradise! Now I’m wearing a black dinner dress that I feel is over the top and Ellen’s going to make a snarky remark about it.“Stop fidgeting with your dress. It’s sexy.” Ezra gripped my hand and planted it on his thigh.“That’s the problem it’s too much.”“Says who?”“Of course, you don’t think so you’re my mate.”He put the car in park. Ellen and her husband lived in a massive modern mansion. It could put Ezra’s house to shame but Ezra’s castle had a massive amount of land. I could imagine the parties they threw here.Ezra leaned over the console and kissed my forehead.“Just be yourself, Summer. Don’t worry about anything. I’ll be right next to you.”I chewed on my bottom lip and nodded. This would have been easier if I didn’t know Ellen hated me. Maybe she was different around her husband. Ezra and I walked to the front door and were greeted by an elderly woman in a formal
Ezra POV“It’s too soon,” I replied.“You’re worried about Gardenia, aren’t you?” She stomped to the fireplace.“I’m not scared of her.”“Oh yeah?” she raised a brow in challenge.“Listen, sweetheart. We’re taking precautions. This little guy’s the heir to my empire, my fortune—”“You have a fortune?” Summer dipped her head to the side.“Of course I do. I live in a castle. I run the most successful bar in town and that doesn’t even cut it.”“It doesn’t?” she asked.Summer didn’t know about my finances. I realized I kept the state of my pockets away from her. I didn’t mean to. I trusted her. She never made me feel like she was after me for money or status.“That’s a conversation we need to have later, but I’ve got a bunch of businesses in my tribe packs. I’ve got trusted people running them. I’m not worried about anything.”It didn’t hurt that I had a dark reputation. It came in handy when people thought about crossing me. It made them think twice.Summer blew a lock of hair out of he
Ezra POVI stuffed Summer’s dress in a garbage bag and cleaned up the mess in the bedroom. Blood was never a good sign. It was a warning of things to come. I was tired of this bitch and her threats but it was about time she showed her damn face. Her daughter Veronica penetrated our borders again during our Mating Ceremony.I didn’t tell Summer because I didn’t want her to worry. I know a part of her carries serious guilt for killing Jacob, but it was either him or her, and I was glad it was him and not her. While Summer was in the shower in the other room across the hall, I pulled out my phone and called Vik.“Any news?” I asked.“She’s around. The little bitch.” Saying Vik had family issues was an understatement.“Summer thinks your stepmother’s prowling around. She left us a gift.”“Fuck.”“When I find her, I’ll kill her.”“Listen, Ezra. I think there’s a reason Gardenia’s been buying her time.”“I’m listening.”“Okay, hear me out. I know that woman killed my Father and took everyth
Summer POVI woke to the sound of an axe hitting wood. It was still six in the morning what’s with all the noise? Yet the sun didn’t seep into the cabin. It was gloomy like the sky wanted to cry but it was holding it all in. Ezra wasn’t in the bed with me so I assumed the noise was him. I slipped into his shirt and put on my bunny slippers.I passed my wedding dress on the chair in the corner of the room. It was neatly laid on the chair. It was so beautiful I can’t believe I couldn’t wear it again.Ezra booked a cosy cabin near a river in the middle of nowhere. The next cabin was miles away so we weren’t totally alone out here. It was a romantic getaway. I didn’t think we’d have a honeymoon because we’ve lived together for so long.“Should you be chopping wood shirtless?” I called out from the front porch. He paused and straightened his spine— his back muscles“Shouldn’t you be resting?”I smiled. I closed the distance and kissed him. He grabbed my cheek and deepened our kiss.“I thou
Summer POV“So this is the girl who claims to be the future Luna,” Ellen said. How would I respond to that?“I…uh… well…”She eyed me from head to toe. I felt like I was under an X-ray machine. She adjusted her bag, raised her shoulders and continued to stare disapprovingly.I shook my head. “I’m Summer.”“I’m Ellen Turner. Ezra’s Aunt. His Mother was my sister. I’m also an esteemed member of the Pack Council. I take my job very seriously.”She reminded me of an old stuck-up school Principal. I offered Ellen a pressed smile.“I’m sure you do, Ellen.”How did she know I was here? I didn’t want to know.“The Mating Ceremony is a few days away,” she stated.I nodded. “I just have to pick up my dress. Ezra and I have everything organized. You don’t have to worry about anything.”Ellen placed a hand on her chest, threw her head back and laughed. I pressed my lips together. My wolf didn’t like her as much as I did but I forced Clover to be nice.“I have a lot to be worried about. Like the w
Summer POV“Hunter won’t let anyone into the room,” Oliver said.“I’m her sister! Her full-blood sister, not even half anymore. I want to see her.”“He’s in his wolf form, Summer and it’s damn terrifying.” Oliver rubbed the back of his head as he spoke.“Give him a minute, Summer. His girlfriend was attacked. If you were in that bed, no one would be allowed in this hospital.”I stared at Ezra. He could be so dramatic.“She got stabbed, Ezra,” I said.“Exactly, and Hunter’s worried, too. Come on, let’s get coffee. If he’s not out by the time we return, then we’ll figure things out.”“Can’t you make him come out?”He slipped an arm around my shoulder, and we began to walk.“I don’t have authority over Hunter anymore. He’s too powerful.”“Right… aren’t you worried about that?”Ezra sighed and punched a button for the elevator doors to open.“I’m more worried about my brother being hunted like an animal and killed for the Solaris Crown.”“That won’t happen. Remember, Hunter is really powe
Hunter POVShe tasted like cherry and vanilla. I dove my fingers into my hair, tugging as our lips connected. Estelle was a wildfire yet as delicate as ice. Never met a girl who could kid my ass and mend my heart all at once. I think I knew a while ago that I was screwed.“Ah Hunter,” she moaned.I growled into her lips. I lifted her thighs. Gosh, I loved her thighs and flipped her over so I was on top. I caressed her arms and lifted them over her head. I paused and stared into her eyes. I could do this my whole life. Which was scary I’d never thought about that before with any woman.“Hey, come on!”I chuckled. “Impatient much?”She bit her bottom lip. I rolled my hips forward, filling her up completely as gently as I could. She changed up my entire style. She might have been a badass out there in the real world. Estelle could kick anyone’s ass. Yet when she was with me the real Estelle came out. The shy, delicate and soft Estelle. She was soft in more ways than one. I scooped her in
Summer POV“Don’t worry he’ll be fine. I didn’t realize my own strength but I removed whatever dark spell was rooted in him.”Ezra and Hunter with Estelle arrived ten minutes ago. They hauled Dad upstairs to his room. Rachel and her family cleared out before Ezra arrived. Good, I didn’t want to deal with them ever again.Dad hadn’t woken up though he was breathing easily.I nodded and rubbed my eyes, itching to spill tears.“There’s something else though,” Hunter rubbed the back of his head.“What?” Estelle asked before I could.“I…uh… look I didn’t know it would happen!”“Spit it out Hunter,” Ezra growled. Ezra placed his hand on my shoulder and massaged it.“I couldn’t heal him without taking something from him apparently it’s how my powers work. So I took his rank. He’s not an Alpha anymore.”“Oh fuck, Hunter,” Ezra exhaled.“It was either that or let him die. I’m sorry girls.”“Whatever,” Estelle mumbled.I glared at her. “He can’t be the Alpha General anymore because he’s not an
Summer POV“You’ve had a problem with my wife since you met her, admit it,” Dad grumbled.“Yes, I admit it. I hate the fact you made me sleep in the basement when there was a perfectly good room upstairs without rats!”“We’ll talk about that later,” Dad said, shoving the front door open.“Oh, honey you’re back early,” Marcella said.“Were you doing something?” I accused. She rolled her eyes. “And you brought this one.”“Summer’s not staying long,” Dad said. I swear I saw sweat on his brow. It wasn’t hot in the house by any chance.“Of course, she still has to clean out her room. I want to convert the basement into an in-house gym!” She clapped her hands.I rolled my eyes dramatically and made sure it lasted long enough for her to see it.“Yes, Summer should get her things,” Dad said.He wasn’t sounding like himself again. I should have come with backup but I was here now and I couldn’t back out.“What did you do to him, Marcella? Aside from lie!”Marcella placed a hand on her chest an
