AVA MAXWELL.

I stepped into the elevator with a sharp inhale, the adrenaline still coursing through my veins after the intense board meeting. James, her father’s trusted secretary, stood beside me, clutching a folder tightly, while Helen, my own assistant, adjusted her glasses nervously. The tension between the three was palpable, though no words were exchanged.

The meeting had gone exactly as I planned—or nearly so. I'd walked into that room ready for a fight, and Autumn’s smug expression upon my arrival had only fueled my resolve. I was determined to protect my father’s legacy and wasn’t about to let my scheming step-sister or her entourage of compromised shareholders ruin what he’d spent decades building.

The elevator doors slid shut, but the silence in the small compartment couldn’t drown out the echo of my pounding heart. I replayed the confrontation in my mind, the way Autumn’s confident smirk had faltered when I pulled up the damning footage.

AVA MAXWELL POV.The sunlight streamed through the blinds, but my focus was elsewhere as I glanced down at my phone. Notifications were still pouring in, headlines screaming about the so-called “vindictive ex-wife.” A picture of me standing outside the gynecologist’s office with Jerome had gone viral.“Vindictive?” I muttered, shaking my head as I scrolled through the flood of speculation and vitriol. “As if I have time for this nonsense.”The tabloids painted me as a scorned woman desperate for Jerome’s attention, concocting a wild narrative far from the truth. I tossed my phone onto the bed and stood up. I refused to let their baseless accusations rattle me. My day was far too packed to waste time entertaining such drivel. After a quick shower and breakfast, I headed to my father’s company. I'dbarely stepped out of the elevator into the executive wing when I caught whispers trailing in my wake. Board members, assistants, and even security guards exchanged furtive glances as I walke

A Whisper in the ShadowsAVA MAXWELL.The crisp autumn air had begun to chill, the sun’s gentle warmth barely cutting through the encroaching cold. Two months had passed since my world had unraveled, and in that time, I had thrown myself entirely into work, into solving the endless puzzles my father’s absence had left behind. I had made progress—substantial progress—but no matter how many problems I managed to tackle, a lingering sense of unease clung to me like a shadow.Hope was my lifeline. Every time I visited my father in the hospital, I told myself that he would wake up. His strong hands, once so full of life, lay still now, but I imagined them moving again, gripping mine. That hope carried me through sleepless nights, through whispers of scandal that refused to die down, through the cold indifference of a step-sister who had yet to make another move. Autumn’s quiet had unnerved me more than her scheming ever did.And then there was Jerome. That tugging feeling at the back of m

AVA MAXWELL.The soft, rhythmic beeping of the machines filled the air as I sat beside my father’s hospital bed. I had been here every day for over a month, praying, hoping, and willing him to open his eyes. I refused to accept the doctors’ grim outlook. I just couldn’t. He was my father, my only family. And I believed, with everything in me, that he would come back to me.I sat cross-legged in the chair, my laptop perched precariously on my knees, working on a report that should have been done days ago. My mind wasn’t in it, not fully. Every few minutes, I glanced up at his pale, lifeless form, silently pleading for a sign—a twitch of a finger, a flicker of an eyelid. But there was nothing. It was eerily quiet, save for the hum of machines and the occasional shuffle of nurses in the hallway. I didn’t realize how heavily I was immersed in my work until the loud, jarring beep of my father’s monitor yanked me back to reality. My heart dropped as I saw his body tremble violently, the onc

CHAPTER TWENTY THREE.AVA.The press conference had drained every ounce of energy from me. I had delivered the necessary updates about my father’s death and the company’s plans, maintaining a composed façade even as the weight of grief and responsibility threatened to crush me. The flashing cameras and rapid-fire questions had felt like a spotlight burning into me, forcing me to reveal cracks I didn’t want anyone to see.I knew they were hungry for more—juicy details about the company’s future, salacious tidbits about my personal grief—but I had given them nothing beyond the essentials. The moment I left the podium, I let out a shaky breath, my legs threatening to buckle under me.Helen, always practical and composed, whisked me out of the building before the reporters could chase me down. She didn’t say much during the ride back to my condo, and for that, I was grateful. My thoughts were too chaotic to articulate. The city lights blurred as I stared out the car window, my mind loopin

CHAPTER TWENTY TWO : The Weight of LossAVA'S POV.I never thought the moment would come when I’d have to look at my father like this—lifeless, cold, and unresponsive. The morgue smelled faintly of antiseptic and something else I couldn’t quite place, a sterile sharpness that made my stomach churn. The sight of him lying on that metal slab shattered the fragile wall of denial I had built around myself.I had been holding onto a thread of hope that this was all just a cruel misunderstanding, but the truth was right in front of me now. My father was gone. The first sob escaped me in a broken gasp as I stepped closer to him. I barely noticed Jerome’s hand on the small of my back, guiding me forward. My legs felt like they would give way any second, but somehow, I made it to the slab. My hands trembled as I reached out and took one of his in mine. It was ice-cold, the warmth of life completely drained from his body.“Daddy…” The word barely escaped my lips before I broke down entirely.I
