Chapter 028

Reese

It was six in the evening when I got out of bed and moved to the closet to pick out an outfit for the dinner. I got dressed and just as I had finished putting on light red lipstick on my lips, I heard a knock on my door before it threw open, and Liza slipped in.

''Reese...'' she called, her voice trembled a little like something was bothering her, and I stared at her reflection in front of me.

What does she want? Does she already know about my affair with her brother?

Liza frowned and tightened her lips for a moment, fixing her gaze down to the floor.

''What is it, Liza? Is there something wrong?'' I asked worriedly, turning around to face her.

''I’m pregnant...'' she announced, biting her lip.

My eyes widened, my lips parted in disbelief. I was the one who was married here, and she was the one who got pregnant? How did that even happen?

''Pregnant? A child in your womb? How come? I mean, I thought you didn't have a boyfriend?'' I asked, shocked to the core.

Chapter 029ReeseWe were already seated at the table that Enzo had reserved earlier. His intense gaze became inevitable as he flickered his eyes at me, glinting with amusement when I rolled mine at him.He was interrupted by Liza’s loud sigh, and then she glanced up at both of us.''Sushi’s your favorite. I’ll order it for you...'' he told Liza, who tilted her head at me, as if asking what I wanted to eat.But then I remembered that one time, I read books about pregnancy, since I had always dreamed of having a baby. I had learned that raw fish wasn’t good for pregnant women.I signaled Liza not to order it, and I was thankful she clearly understood what I was trying to say.''Oh, I'm sorry, but I'm not in the mood for sushi right now...'' she shook her head, and Enzo arched a brow at her in response. ''Well, I... Reese doesn’t want the smell of raw fish...''Liza leaned back against her seat with a calm expression as Enzo moved his gaze back to me, and I smiled at him.''I’m sorry...

Chapter 030Reese''I’m sorry, but I need to go to the ladies’ room...'' I rose from my seat and promptly excused myself before I padded my way to the restroom.Thankfully, the place was deserted when I got inside. I stood before the mirror and stared at my reflection. ''Why am I letting Enzo do this to me?''I sighed, turning the faucet on, and splashed some cold water on my face. I reached for a paper towel and dried my face a little. The minimal make-up I wore was thankfully waterproof, so I didn’t have to retouch it.Liza said that Enzo was marrying that Candice girl, but why was he still wasting his time bothering me?I have to settle this once and for all. I didn't want to become my mom. A mistress, a homewrecker, a cheater.I reapplied my lipstick and stood back, viewing the result. I was pleased at how poised I looked after what Enzo’s hand had done to me under the table.I pulled the door open and stepped into the dim corridor, retracing my steps. Just as I walked past the me

I blocked my body to prevent him from inflicting further harm on Enzo, but he grabbed my wrist and dragged me out of the hallway.''Reese!'' Liza’s eyes widened when she saw Troy holding my hand. ''Troy, where are you taking her? Let her go!''I saw the recognition in Troy’s eyes, but he chose to ignore her and continued dragging me with full force, having no regard for the fact that he was causing me pain.''Sir, what’s the problem here?'' the security guard of the restaurant intervened, but Troy planted his palm against his chest and shoved him away.''She’s my wife. Don’t you dare get involved here!'' he growled, and the guard quickly stepped back, making room for us to step out.''I’m sorry. Please help Enzo...'' Chapter 033ReeseI let myself stand in front of our old room, my heart began beating in a frantic rhythm in my chest. My knees were melting, and my skin was turning cold as a result of the fear and worry that I was experiencing. I leaned against the door, and my knuckles were gripping the knob as if I was hesitant to take the steps to enter the bedroom.I took a few deep breaths, forcing the much-needed air into my lungs. I was tight with anxiety as I silently tried to reassure myself to calm down and everything would be alright.I could hear the sound of my mom’s soft sobbing from down the stairs, while Troy’s low murmurs soothed her.I finally pushed the door open, and the bedding quickly caught my attention, my heart breaking as I gazed fixedly at the bed. Chapter 034ReeseI made sure to close the door of the bedroom where mom left it open after running away crying, and then I trudged towards the closet and drew out a fresh towel from it.I crossed to the bathroom, careful not to wake Troy as he slept peacefully. Studying myself in the mirror, I smiled at the visage that was looking back at me. Although my eyes were puffy and swollen as a result of all the crying that I did last night, my skin was glowing. My eyes were beaming up, and there was a genuine smile plastered across my face. I looked exactly how I felt.It was full of hopes and dreams.I yanked open the medicine cabinet where I had placed a spare toothbrush, and I was relieved mom refrained from meddling with the things that I had organized here in the bathroom.I brushed my teeth and stepped into the shower, groaning in appreciation as the warm water soothed my abused muscles, I had no idea were tensed. Well, maybe from being dragged by Troy last night from the restaurant--

Enzo laughed out loud while I found myself rolling my eyes at him as we hurried together in the direction of his car. Chapter 149ReeseWe stood in front of Enzo's grandfather's house, and a sense of apprehension washed over me. This marked my first encounter with my grandparents-in-law, hoping that it wouldn't be the last.A maid opened the door, greeting us with a respectful bow and gesturing for us to enter. Enzo held my hand while his other hand clasped Riza's as we stepped inside. We were welcomed by a beautiful woman seated gracefully on the living room couch. She was someone I recognized but had yet to meet. Beatrice Jackson.''Hello, Enzo...'' she said with a flirtatious smile, rising from her seat to approach him, planting a kiss on his cheek. Her gaze remained fixed on him, seemingly oblivious to our presence.''Beatrice, what brings you here?'' Enzo inquired, releasing my hand to wipe away the lipstick mark on his cheek.''Oh, grandpa invited us for dinner. He mentioned you would be joining us...'' she replied nonchalantly, then took Enzo's hand from Riza's. ''Come on. They are waiting for

Chapter 148TroyI stood up as the female warden escorted Mandy into the room where I was waiting for her. My brows knitted when I saw her current state. She was using a cane for support, and a metal brace extended along her right leg. What happened to her? Had she been involved in a fight with her fellow inmates? Our eyes locked, yet her expression revealed no emotion. She appeared to have lost considerable weight, her once fake ginger hair now dark and cut very short. Her complexion appeared quite pale, and she seemed excessively thin, a stark contrast to the woman I believed I had fallen in love with.Mandy was hardly recognizable.''Mandy...'' I spoke as she settled into the chair opposite me, with the guard positioned a few meters behind her.Mandy regarded me with an expressionless face. ''What the fuck are you doing here?''I observed her closely, noting the animosity reflected in her eyes.''I came to say goodbye. I'm leaving Manhattan...'' I replied, anticipating her inquiry

Chapter 147Troy I had just paid a visit to my mother's grave and opted to enjoy a coffee at a nearby café beforehand. As I gazed through the glass window, I noticed a woman on the pavement across the street who bore a striking resemblance to my ex-wife. She brushed a strand of her ginger hair away from her face with the back of her hand, a gesture so familiar that it sent a jolt through my heart.I rose abruptly, inadvertently knocking over my cup of coffee. The woman turned her lovely face upward, and for a fleeting moment, it felt as though she was looking directly into my eyes. In that instant, I realized that the woman was indeed my wife.
