Eva chose a short crepe ivory sheath dress with beaded spaghetti straps and a small side slit at the edge. Alyssa chose a light blue A-line dress with a boat neck, pairing it with black designer heels.
“Are you planning to wear those flip-flops with this?” laughed Alyssa when the door clicked open and Alexander entered the apartment. Eva’s heart raced with apprehension, wondering if Alexander would like her look.
Alyssa went outside her room while Eva stayed hidden under the pretext of choosing a pair of shoes. “Aren’t you ready yet? Where’s Eva?” she could hear Alexander growl in the living room. Wearing a pair of white pumps, she went out, her heartbeats thumping faster than ever before.
“I’m here,” she replied. Alexander looked at her, his eyes sweeping over the entire length of her. His jaws clenched with fury and he glared at her, disapproving of her looks.
“What the f*ck are you wearing? Is that a dress? Change into something decent right now,” he growled, while Alyssa’s mouth hung open with disbelief.
“You bought me that dress, bro. Do we have so much time to change now?” she protested, but Alexander caught Eva’s hand and pulled her towards his sister’s room. Eva felt close to tears. She had taken so much pains to dress up for him, but it wasn’t enough. She could never rise to his expectations and please him! He didn’t like the way she looked!
“Why don’t you both go ahead? I think I’ll go home,” she said in a small, disappointed voice. Alexander fumed more and simply pulled her towards the closet without listening to a single word of hers. Alyssa rolled her eyes and followed them inside.
“If you don’t like the dress, why don’t you buy her a dress you like? I won’t let you ransack my closet,” she complained while Eva stood looking guilty to cause the delay.
“Please stop this. I’m not going,” she said.
“Here, this is perfect,” said Alexander, fishing out a blush pink A-line satin dress with a v-neckline, a fitted bodice, and a ruffled hemline. Alyssa’s jaws dropped at seeing the beautiful dress lying in her closet.
“Wow! I never wore that dress. I bought it last fall and totally forgot about it. The color suits you, Eva,” said Alyssa.
“I can’t wear a brand new dress of yours!” said Eva, looking alarmed. She might not be born with a golden spoon, but she wasn’t greedy.
“Wear this or no dinner.” Alyssa took it from her brother’s hands and he stormed away angrily. “Hurry now!” he said over his shoulder.
“I’ll pay for this then,” said Eva, and Alyssa nodded to pacify her. Eva changed as fast as she could and when she went out, her heart skipped a beat at seeing the small smile on Alexander’s face. He didn’t need to say anything, but she knew he approved of her look finally. It might be a small thing for others, but for her, it meant the world!
“We’re sitting at the back. I won’t sit in front,” said Alyssa, but Alexander shook his head.
“Eva, sit in front with me.” It was more of an order, and Alyssa flashed her a victorious smile. He opened the door for her and she climbed into his sleek car while Alyssa sat at the back.
“Now that you’re back, we can do this every weekend, Alex,” suggested Alyssa excitedly.
“I don’t have so much time. This is only to celebrate my homecoming,” said Alexander gruffly.
“Mom and dad are throwing a party tomorrow to celebrate your homecoming. So why again today?” asked a confused Alyssa.
“Eva won’t come tomorrow.” Eva glanced at his face and her young heart filled up with more love for him. Did he care about her? Could she ask him about the letter she had given him five years ago? Maybe he had read it after all. He might remember it since he remembered how his parents hated her with a vengeance. She wasn’t allowed to enter their house for reasons she wasn’t aware of. She accepted it as her fate and kept her distance.
Eva could feel his glance upon her frequently when he stopped at signals while Alyssa kept on rambling about the last time they went out to eat and the bill amount rocketed high. Eva had opted out that day since she had never splurged on herself. She needed to save money to tide her over for the next few years until she got a job. She fidgeted nervously with her clutch, her mind filling up with a million questions to ask him, but she couldn’t overcome the shyness.
“Are you listening, bro?” scowled Alyssa from the backseat. Alexander glanced at her with an amused expression on his face.
“Of course!”
“Tell me where I was.” Alexander scratched his head, searching for an answer.
“The bill was too much and Skylar escaped to the washroom.” Alyssa scoffed and glared at her brother.
“No. I crossed that part forty seconds ago when we stopped at the signal. Where are you lost?” Alyssa complained, sulking in the backseat. Alexander laughed while Eva blushed, knowing he was staring at her for the last forty seconds. But why? Was she looking good? Her cheeks colored more and her heart filled up with hope.
They reached a posh and elegant building housing the high-end restaurant, combining several floors. Eva felt a little conscious of herself, having never eaten at such a place. Her eyes widened seeing the signboard flashing the name.
Rotterdams
So this was what he would take over!
Alexander glanced at her to ensure that she realized where he had brought them. “This is where you both will find me working mostly when I’m here in the city!” he said, staring at her. Alyssa’s jaws dropped at the information.
“Have you got a job here?” she asked incredulously.
“No, this is uncle Desmond’s flagship restaurant where I’ll be training for the next few months before taking over the entire business.”
“Whatever! Just don’t marry Beatrix!” she mumbled before pulling Eva along with her toward the restaurant. The topic piqued Eva’s curiosity, and she wanted to know more about Beatrix but, with Alexander following them closely, she couldn’t ask her. The place was famous for its sensational European cuisine. With a vast array of culinary choices, to tickle every tastebud, the restaurant was quite popular.
With the airy, open space decor, high ceilings, and European artifacts, the place looked elegant yet pristine. The lower level catered to private events, while the next level housed their signature bar. Alexander led them to the upper floor that housed a large, family-style sharing restaurant famous for its succulent seafood dishes.
“Wow! I could be a waitress here in return for free meals!” said Alyssa excitedly.
“Me too,” giggled Eva. Alexander rolled his eyes at their childish wishes, but a smile broke free despite his attempts at curbing it. They settled down at their table and Alexander handed them the menu to choose from. Eva’s head reeled at seeing the never-ending choices.
“I can’t choose. It’s so complicated!” she whispered to Alyssa, who was struggling as well.
“You order, bro.” She dumped the menu cards to her brother and looked around with interest. Alexander ordered, quite at ease in such a place.
“Hello, son. Trevor informed me about your booking here tonight,” said Desmond Rotterdam as he approached their table. Flanked by two assistants on either side of him, he exuded power and elegance as he stopped by their table to shake hands with Alexander.
“Hello, uncle Desmond. I brought my sister and her friend for a treat here,” said Alexander, standing to shake hands with his mentor.
“Good, good. That’s a very nice gesture. Do drop in at home. Trixie will feel overjoyed,” said Desmond Rotterdam, but Alexander looked a little uncomfortable as his glance darted toward Eva.
“Sure, uncle Desmond.” He added curtly.
“Anyway, we will drop by your house tomorrow for the party. Enjoy yourselves. See you tomorrow,” said his mentor before leaving the restaurant.
Their food arrived, and they tucked in hungrily. It really was out of the world and Alexander treated them to their heart's content.
“I’m so full that I could go without food for two days!” said Alyssa.
“Me too. How will I go home?”
“Stay over at my place. It’s Saturday tomorrow anyway,” suggested Alyssa. Alexander paid for their food and led them out to his car.
He drove them back to their building and parked the car. “Bye Alyssa. I’ll go home,” said Eva, surprised that Alexander did not offer to drop her home. Well, she would have to walk down!
“No one’s going anywhere. You can stay with Lisa tonight. I’ll drop you home tomorrow,” said Alexander, walking away towards the elevator. Alyssa grinned and pulled her along. Eva’s heart sang with joy. Why did Alexander want her to stay over? Did he like her as much as she liked him?
Alyssa punched in the code and rushed inside, heading straight to the washroom to pee. Alexander stood at their doorway with a strange expression on his face. Didn’t he want to go back to his apartment?
“Thanks for the treat,” said Eva.
“Did you enjoy yourself?” he asked, gazing straight into her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Good. I’ll treat you to another place soon. It’s my favorite! Good night, Eva!” he disappeared, closing the door after him before his words registered in her head.
“Good night, Alexander!” she whispered as her heart filled with hope. He liked her!
Alyssa grinned at Eva as she emerged from the washroom, having heard the interaction between her best friend and her brother. “Why didn’t you ask him about the letter?” she giggled excitedly. Eva blushed at the roots of her hair and shook her head. “It was a foolish idea and I shouldn’t have listened to you and Skylar.” “Shouldn’t you be thanking us instead? It’s because of us you could confess your feelings. I know you, Eva. You would rather die of heartbreak than admit to your true feelings,” said Alyssa and Eva smiled at her friend. No one knew her better than Alyssa did. “It’s better I hadn’t confessed. He doesn’t love me the way I do.” “He does. Why don’t you win him over? Show him how much you care,” urged her friend. Eva sighed and smiled, not promising anything. Her nature was totally opposite to that of her friend’s. She couldn’t express her feelings well, having always bottled them up. While they all had someone or the other to open up to, she had no one apart from
Alexander twisted and turned on his bed, not getting a wink of sleep. He hadn’t expected Eva to grow up so fast into such an irresistible beauty! At eighteen, she was smoking hot, her honey-hued eyes inviting him to drown in her sweetness. Alexander had to try hard to control his urges around her. It was something he had never expected to happen. Being sinfully attracted to his little sister’s best friend should not happen at all! Yet he was helpless and visited her apartment twice already, took her out to dinner even, all in a matter of a day! How pathetic could he get? He closed his eyes, thinking of the torture he would have to go through the next day at home. Why did his parents have to throw a gala party on the occasion of his homecoming? He didn’t have any problems with parties, but it was the guest list he dreaded meeting, especially Beatrix. It would have been so much better if only his and Alyssa’s friends were invited, but that would never happen. They would never invite
Eva caught Alyssa’s hand to stop her from calling her brother, but she didn’t listen to her at all. “Alex will drop you home. My car has a flat tyre.” “I can walk down. It’s no big deal. I’m used to walking,” said Eva, not wanting to bother Alexander. Alexander accepted the call and Eva clamped her mouth shut, her heart racing with excitement. “Bro, can you drop Eva home? I have a flat tyre and she is planning to walk back.” Alexander’s face eased into a smile. It was an involuntary reaction, something he had no control over. “Give me five minutes.” He disconnected the call and took a quick shower. Feeling fresh, he pulled on his clothes and dashed off to drop Eva off. “Was he angry?” asked Eva nervously as they waited for Alexander. “No, he sounded glad.” “I’m sure you’re quite mistaken. Why would he be happy to drop me off? He doesn’t even like me.” Alyssa shook her head with a sly gleam in her eyes. Her brother could fool the world with his arrogance, but not her. She could
Alexander didn’t have an answer to give his mentor, Desmond Rotterdam, and flashed a fake smile at him when they embraced. “Nice to see you back for good, son. I’m eagerly waiting for you to start your training.” “Me too, uncle Desmond. It has been my passion to own a restaurant chain and I can’t wait to start,” said Alexander, too engrossed in his dream topic to give Beatrix a thought. He was extremely ambitious and could do anything to achieve his aspirations, except marry Beatrix, of course. His parents joined them and soon they started having a detailed discussion about the weekend getaway they wanted to go to. Alyssa left the party with her friends, not liking what was going on. Her heart constricted with pain for her best friend, who was oblivious to everything. “Do you really think your brother will marry Beatrix?” asked Skylar, unable to stop herself. “I don’t know what to think of it. I thought he cared about Eva,” said Alyssa with a sigh.“Tell nothing to Eva now. She’ll
I just went to catch hold of Lisa.” Eva nodded, disappointed to hear him. Of course, he had gone to see his sister. How silly of her to ask? “Oh, did you meet her? She didn’t come here.” Alexander nodded, wondering what reason to give her to explain his surprise visit. “Yes, I met her and your entire group. I just came here to check up on you.” Eva didn’t prod further since it was obvious he came here only out of curiosity. The space beside her looked so inviting that Alexander couldn’t resist the temptation to sit with her. Eva’s eyes widened when he joined her on the sofa, his legs almost brushing with hers as he occupied the entire space beside her. His presence filled up the room, the scent of his cologne playing havoc with her senses. “Were you crying, Eva?” His sudden question took her by surprise and when he picked her hand up in his large rough one, Eva’s young heart melted into a puddle. She could only shake her head as her throat felt too choked to utter a single word. W
They all squealed with delight at seeing their friend after years. “How did you know we’re meeting up here?” asked Skylar, as she sprang up from her seat to embrace her friend. “Sienna informed me and here I am,” said Alyssa, as they all hugged her one by one. Eva stood quietly with tears of pure happiness in her eyes as she stared at her friend in disbelief. Was she really here for good? Alyssa at last turned towards her, opening her arms out for a hug. “Aren’t you gonna give me a hug, Eva?” Eva smiled through her tears and went forward, wrapping her best friend in her arms. “I’m so glad to see you, Alyssa.” Alyssa could feel the pain in her voice, although she tried her best to look happy. For the last four years, the few times they had interacted over the phone, Eva had been very secretive about her true feelings. Alyssa had called her the day her brother got engaged, and Eva hadn’t accepted her call for a month. She found out from Sienna that she had stopped taking care of hers
“Who’s there Alex?” purred Beatrix from behind him and he came to his senses and looked away. “Shall we leave?” he asked gruffly, turning away and storming out of the apartment without a word. His indifference hurt Eva, and she slowly emerged from the kitchen after the door closed shut after them. “I’m not going to Phoenix. I'm fine with any other place,” she said, her mood already souring at the interaction. How could Alexander not recognize her at all? Hurt, she picked up her bag and trudged ahead towards the door. The doorbell rang, and Alyssa rushed ahead of her to open it.“You aren’t going anywhere, Eva,” scolded an upset Alyssa while opening the door. Skylar and Hayley barged inside, looking upset and displeased, arguing amongst themselves. “You shouldn’t have said that to him,” scolded Skylar. “I couldn’t top myself. She’s a bitch,” argued Hayley while the other two gaped at them. “I know, but she is Alex’s fiancée,” pointed out Skylar. “I don’t care,” said Hayley with a
“Desmond wants you and Beatrix to plan your wedding, Alex. How long are you planning to wait? Isn’t four years enough?” asked his mom at the dinner table. When his mom invited him and Beatrix over for dinner, he immediately understood his parents’ intentions. He wanted to avoid it but his dad ruled the option out by arriving at his place with Beatrix to get him. So here he was sitting, sandwiched between Beatrix and her dad, with his parents facing him. It was the worst situation ever! “I’m willing to marry him right away, aunt Jodie.” Alexander glared at Beatrix wanting to remind her she had to leave her ways if she genuinely wanted to marry him but with her father sitting right next to him, he couldn’t utter a single word, “I’ve asked you something, Alexander. When do we fix your wedding date?” prodded his mom. “I’m not ready to get married, mom.” “Scratch that. I think he isn’t ready to marry me,” pouted an upset Beatrix. “No one will be ready to marry you, Trixie, if you don’
“Granny, grandpa, you have to shift to New York this time. Enough of staying here all by yourselves. Why don’t you sell off the hobby center?” coaxed Alyssa after seeing the way her grandpa was still struggling with his day-to-day activities at eighty-nine.“Yes, Alyssa is right, dad. Please come along with us. You can play with Eleanor or Axel in a few days instead of living here all by yourselves,” said Alexander’s mom. “Who are Eleanor and Axel?” asked a clueless granny. “Alexander and Eva’s baby, mom!” said Jodie Van Every, beaming with excitement. She loved the names the moment she heard them and had been planning a nursery for the baby ever since Grandpa gave his wife an excited look, as if contemplating the suggestion. “Who will buy the hobby center? I can sell everything here and move to New York with you but after Alexander’s baby is born,” said grandpa. “Done. We’ll stay back here and help you sell everything off,” said Daniel Van Every. It was therefore decided that his
The next morning, Alexander reached Mr. Strasbourg’s house on time. His son, Adam Strasbourg, welcomed him and offered him coffee as they waited for Mr. Fitzgerald. Alexander had met him two years ago when he had come down from Frankfurt where he lived. “I know you’re the prime suspect in this case and you shouldn’t be visiting here, but I wanted to see you, Alexander. My mind is very disturbed. Dad was so attached to you, and it’s ironic that you had to be accused of murdering him.”“I’m sorry that I couldn’t save him, Adam. After stepping down from Rotterdams, I was quite busy.”“I understand. For the last two years, we have been pleading with dad to come over to Frankfurt and live with us but he didn’t even consider it an option. He received a strange thrill from involving himself with Rotterdams. He seemed obsessed with saving the empire, which belonged to a deceased friend.”“Yes, he was too attached to Rotterdams.” “What was the outcome of his dedication? He lost his life! Thi
The next day, Alexander shifted to his penthouse when Eva was at the hospital. His mom came over with her housekeeper to get the penthouse cleaned up and arrange their belongings. Alexander felt relieved to be home at last, to where he belonged. “Everything is arranged now. I’ll leave, Alex. We’ll see you later after you settle down,” said his mom. After his mom left, Alexander received a call from Ashton.“Bro, I wouldn’t be able to return soon. There’s an emergency here that will take some time to wrap up. I’ve got a big promotion here at the hotel and I can’t overlook my responsibilities here. Why don’t you start without me?” Alexander noted his disinterest in starting a business under the circumstances. “Oh, that’s fine. Dad has released my funds and I can invest freely. Don’t worry, if you want you can join me anytime.” “Thanks, bro. I will.” After he disconnected the call, Alexander called his lawyer, Thomas Goldstein, and informed him about the latest update. “I want to co
“I’m sorry about that, Beatrix. Eva isn’t keeping well because of her pregnancy and I couldn’t take your call,” apologized Alexander, feeling guilty for ignoring her plea for help. “I understand, Alexander. I know how much I’ve tormented you with my stubbornness and I’m sorry for everything I did,” said Beatrix and this time she genuinely looked ashamed of herself. “So am I. Everything happened for a reason. We weren’t meant for one another.” “Yes and I’ve learned my lesson the hard way,” said Beatrix with a sigh. “It’s better to move on now. Have a good life with Fairfield. I’ll contact Mr. Fitzgerald and start hunting for the evidence Mr. Strasbourg had hidden somewhere,” said Alexander, but Beatrix stopped him. “Wait! I have a request, Alexander.” “Tell me!” Alexander knew what she would ask of him, but he wasn’t ready to go into that again. “Please come back to Rotterdams, Alexander. The company needs you. Right now, Mr. McCabe is the current CEO, but I want you to look aft
Eva gaped at her husband, too shocked to react. After Daniel Van Every’s last call, she hardly expected him to accept her. So did she unnecessarily overreact last night? “Oh, are you sure? How did they suddenly change their mind about me?” She wondered if Alexander fought with them for her. “Alyssa made them see sense. Mom and dad apologized for everything that happened. They want to be a part of our lives, to play with our baby,” said Alexander while Eva sat with her mouth hanging open. Did they soften because of her pregnancy? A smile brightened up her face, and she resumed eating, letting the good news seep into her system. “I’m glad that they’ve accepted us, Alexander. I was tired of living alone with no family to call my own. At Maxwell’s house, his family cared for me so much, I craved one of my own. I wished your family would accept me like they did. Maybe God has granted my prayers.” Alexander smiled at her, feeling satisfied that finally another wish of hers had been fulfil
Eva’s head swooned under the effect of a panic attack, and she gasped for breath. Before she could reach the washroom door, her feet buckled, and she felt dizzy. Alexander rushed to catch her just in time to arrest her fall. Alyssa too rushed in followed by the others, too shocked by everything to react. Alexander’s parents gaped at the scene before them, finally realizing how deeply their behavior had affected the poor girl.“Eva, no one can separate us, baby! Please take a deep breath and calm down,” cried Alexander, but she lost her senses in his arms. Alexander carried her limp body to the bed. “I’ll get some water,” said Alyssa, rushing to the washroom. “Eva wake up. I’m right here with you. You’ve been brave for so long. You can’t fall sick now,” said Alexander, patting her cheeks. Alyssa rushed in with the water and sprinkled it over her face. It worked, and she slowly opened her eyes to look at Alexander with wide eyes. “Take deep breaths, baby. I don’t want to admit you
“Lucas called to say that Mr. Fitzgerald is busy tonight. He wouldn’t be coming in for a discussion,” said Alexander, hovering around in the kitchen while Eva made dinner. The doorbell rang and Eva looked at him worriedly. “I thought Mr. Fitzgerald isn't coming in tonight.” Alexander shrugged and went forward to check out who had arrived at their doorstep at such an odd hour. Few people knew that he was released today and was still staying here in Bronx. Maybe it was Alyssa and Nicholas! “Should be Lisa and Nicholas.” He opened the door and rolled his eyes at seeing how right he was. “Knew it!” he said, opening the door wider for Alyssa and Nicholas to come in. “At last I’m allowed entry into the place. I thought I would always be a stalker waiting outside!” said Nicholas and Alyssa punched his arm. “Did you really stalk me? You creep?” asked Alyssa in disbelief. Eva emerged from the kitchen and giggled at the ongoing topic. “Yes, so? Alexander knows about it. He caught me so m
“Eva’s been at my house with Sienna and Alyssa since last night. Don’t worry, we didn’t allow her to return to her apartment. They ensured she didn’t skip her meals, and she was perfectly fine. In fact, we’re all heading there right now,” said Lucas, and Alexander smiled with relief. “I know why you asked. Maybe it’s got something to do with Alyssa. She can answer your question better, bro,” whispered Nicholas. Alexander smiled, amazed at how Nicholas could see through him. “What are we waiting for, man? Let’s go?” urged Alexander, unable to wait any longer. All the formalities were over at the court and they had no reason to wait. “You need to collect your belongings from the precinct, Mr. Van Every,” said the officer, and Alexander nodded. “I’ll see you later, son. Here are the keys to the penthouse. I’m sorry for everything that happened,” said his dad, handing him the keys and walking away, leaving him stunned. What the hell just happened? Did his dad apologize for his beha
“Bro, this isn’t even half the bail amount. Why did you lie to Eva? She’d be so upset when she comes to know,” said a worried Nicholas as they headed to the court for the initial bail hearing before the Magistrate judge. He looked at the cheque that Sienna had issued against the jewelry that Eva handed to her. It was the exact amount Lucas had specified to Eva. “I didn’t want to overburden her with a loan. Don’t tell her anything. I’ll have a word with Alexander later when he is released. Right now, I’m paying the rest of the amount. It’s the same with Chris’s payment. He didn’t quote it all to Alyssa. I’ll pay the rest when the case is over.” They met Chris and discussed the case outside the court while waiting for the proceedings to start. “So, what’s the update on the case? Did you find any leads? Will they approve of Alexander’s bail request?” asked Lucas in a low whisper. “Yes. I’m hundred percent sure, given Alexander’s respectable past record. I’ve roped in a few noteworthy
