Chapter-4
"In the shadows, secrets stir, awaiting the light of truth to reveal their hidden depths."Finally, the seminar concluded around 8:49 PM, leaving Brixlee feeling exhausted. Eager to leave, she hurriedly stormed out of the hall, making her way through the building. As she reached the ground floor, she accidentally bumped into a lady wearing a hoodie and dark sunglasses."Watch where you're going!" the young lady snapped at her, clearly agitated."Why do I keep bumping into people?" Brixlee murmured to herself, annoyed by the situation."I'm sorry," Brixlee quickly apologized, attempting to make peace. However, the young lady with black hair, long lashes, and Irish blue eyes seemed uninterested in resolving the situation."Do you know who I am?" she asked, almost challenging Brixlee.Brixlee was taken aback, wondering who this person could be."I'm sorry, I don't...""I'm Talia Mendez, and you bumped into me!" the young lady exclaimed as if that should explain everything.Brixlee started to feel irritated. "Okay, but I still apologized. Can we just move on?"Talia scoffed, "You're lucky I'm a nice person, or else I would have made a scene!"Rolling her eyes, Brixlee retorted, "Then why don't you just make the scene and get it over with? I'm tired of dealing with this childish behavior." With that, she walked away, annoyed with the encounter and with rich people in general, feeling they always looked down on others.Later, Talia found herself surprised by the unknown lady's bluntness. In a moment of realization and self-awareness, she acknowledged her own mistakes. Anxious about facing Nathan after her confession a week ago, she had taken out her nervousness on Brixlee. Regardless, Talia felt justified in her annoyance due to Brixlee's rude behavior. She made her way to Nathan's office, but he wasn't there. This was unusual, as Nathan usually left the office around 9:30 PM, and it was only 9 PM. Talia took out her phone and sent him a text message: "Hey, I'm outside your office. Can we talk for a moment?"After a few minutes, Nathan finally arrived, and they both entered his office. Talia handed him a small bag she was holding."Grandma made pancakes; she asked me to give them to you," Talia said, smiling coyly and looking away.Nathan's lips curled into a smile. "She's so sweet. I've really missed these sweet pancakes," he replied gratefully.Clearing her throat, Talia began her apology, her tone full of remorse. "Nathan, I'm really sorry for what I said at the party last week. I know it was out of line, and it wasn't fair to put you on the spot like that. I was under the influence, and I wasn't sure what I was saying."Nathan nodded, understanding her state of mind. "It's okay, Talia. I understand how you must have been feeling."Talia continued, her tone filled with sincerity, "But I don't want things to get awkward between us. You're my best friend, and I don't want to lose your friendship over a silly mistake."Nathan smiled and reached for her hand, assuring her, "We don't have to lose each other, Talia. I value your friendship more than anything."Relieved, Talia felt a wave of gratitude wash over her. She was glad that Nathan was understanding and forgiving."That being said, Granny wants you to come to see her tomorrow. She misses you," Talia said with a smile."Absolutely, I'll make sure to visit Granny tomorrow. I miss her too," Nathan replied, returning Talia's smile.Talia felt a sense of relief and gratitude. She had feared that her mistake would strain their friendship, but Nathan's understanding and willingness to move past it reassured her."Thank you, Nathan," she said sincerely. "I really appreciate your forgiveness and willingness to maintain our friendship."Nathan squeezed her hand gently. "Of course, Talia. We all make mistakes, and what matters is how we handle them. I value our friendship too much to let something like this come between us."Talia smiled, feeling a weight lifted off her shoulders. She knew that she was lucky to have a friend like Nathan who understood her and stood by her side.It wasn't always there; it just appeared one day. Talia had heard that Tyler was working for Nathan, so she assumed the desk in his office belonged to Tyler."Wow, Tyler even has a desk in your office? Now, isn't that really sweet?" Talia exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement.Nathan paused for a moment. "Actually, it's not Tyler's. It belongs to my secretary, Brixlee," he clarified.Talia raised an eyebrow, unsure if she had heard correctly because it didn't make any sense. She tried to convince herself that "Brixlee" could be a masculine name, but deep down, she knew better.Nathan had told her two years ago that he was done with female secretaries, and since then, he hadn't had one. Jealousy flooded Talia's soul, her cheeks reddened, and her narrowed eyebrows locked onto Nathan."Oh, I thought you said you were done with female secretaries after what happened with Allison?" Talia asked, looking directly into Nathan's eyes. She could sense the discomfort in his eyes, the same discomfort that always surfaced whenever Allison was mentioned. They hadn't discussed her for almost two years because Nathan had made it clear that he never wanted to talk about her again."Why are you bringing her up?" Nathan asked calmly, his voice turning cold.Talia realized she had crossed a line. It never ended well whenever Allison was brought up in a conversation. Allison had been Nathan's secretary two years ago, but she vanished suddenly andhadn't been found since. No one knew what had transpired between Nathan and her that made him react so strongly whenever her name was mentioned."I'm sorry, Nathan. I just wanted to know what changed your mind," Talia said, sensing a growing ball of suspicion inside her."No reason, I just thought there was no need to restrict myself from having female secretaries. End of discussion," Nathan explained, glancing at his wristwatch. It was getting late."Okay then, I just felt I needed to know," Talia replied half-heartedly. The chilly haze of suspicion began to solidify. She was certain there was more to it, and she was determined to find out at any cost. ...The next day...Brixlee arrived at the office early, determined to prove her dedication to the job. She dropped her bag on her desk and sighed, arranging Nathan's desk. Soon, he arrived."Go...od morning," Brixlee stammered, and he stared at her. "What a surprise, you're early!" he exclaimed in a sarcastic tone."Well, I'm always early. I just had some issues yesterday," Brixlee replied, carefully placing a framed photo on the desk.It was a picture of Nathan and a middle-aged woman. Nathan looked much younger in the photo. Suddenly, Nathan grabbed Brixlee's hand, and she froze. He leaned in closer, sending a shiver of unease down her spine. With a lump in her throat, he whispered something in her ear."Don't ever touch that portrait again," he let go of her hand roughly and took the photo from her, placing it back on the desk."You scared me," Brixlee replied calmly, masking her shaken state.Nathan took his seat, and shortly after, Tyler walked in."Good morning, everyone!" he exclaimed, announcing his presence."Why does he have to be so loud?" Brixlee muttered to herself, but unfortunately, Tyler overheard. "Deal with it," he retorted, and she smirked."So, Nathan, what are we working on today?" Tyler asked, taking a seat nearby.Nathan cleared his throat. "I've been meaning to call a meeting, but thank God you're here. We have a presentation tomorrow for an investor, possibly someone we know, but still..." Nathan explained, waiting for their response."And who is it?" Brixlee asked, intrigued."Mrs. Jessica Torres," Nathan replied, and they all expressed surprise.Brixlee didn't know many celebrities or wealthy individuals, but Mrs. Jessica Torres was her role model. The elderly woman had achieved remarkable success as the founder and owner of one of the country's largest investment companies. Brixlee had always admired her from afar, often watching her on TV."What? Jessica Torres? The founder of the biggest investment company in the country? She is..." Tyler interrupted Brixlee before she could finish."We know all that," he snarked, giving her a glare. Then he turned to Nathan. "But isn't she Xavier's grandmother?" Tyler asked Nathan.Nathan clenched his fists. "Well... technically, yeah...""I thought you said you didn't want anything to do with Xavier?" Tyler questioned, his eyes imploring. Brixlee wasn't sure what they were talking about."Can someone explain what's happening here?" she interjected loudly, and Tyler fell silent."Well... Xavier is someone I dislike for personal reasons. He's the CEO of one of the fastest-rising modeling companies in Texas. His grandma owns an investment company, and I'm trying to get her to invest in the new smart patch we're launching," Nathan explained."Why not ask Xavier to put in a good word for you with his grandma?" Brixlee chimed in, and Tyler scoffed."They're arch-enemies, remember? Try to keep up, Brix," Tyler mocked her with a straight face."Well, since you seem to know it all, then you should know when to shut up," Brixlee snapped, a smirk on her face."Brixlee is so annoying I could just..." Nathan interrupted Tyler."That's enough, guys!" Nathan said firmly, his anger mounting."Now, where were we?" Brixlee asked, smirking at Tyler, and he returned the smirk."Well... we need to prepare a top-notch presentation for her tomorrow. I hope you both understand?" Nathan remarked, and they nodded in agreement. He handed a file to Tyler. "Make 20 copies of these and bring them here," Nathan instructed him. Tyler took the file and left, shooting Brixlee a dirty look. They simply couldn't stand each other...Lunchtime arrived, and Brixlee had been working on the presentation alongside Nathan. She was now famished. She stood up slowly, intending to go to the cafeteria, but Nathan stopped her."Where are you going?" he asked in a calm tone."To the cafeteria. I'm super hungry," Brixlee replied, her stomach rumbling audibly."We have a lot of work to do, and you're worried about food?" Nathan's voice rose in volume. "I... I thought I could just...""Whatever, sit! I'll call the cafeteria to bring your food up here," he said, and Brixlee beamed with delight.Nathan dialed the phone, and Brixlee hurriedly went to him to take the call. She placed her order and hung up, smiling as she returned to her seat.A soft knock on the door interrupted them. It was Tyler. He peered inside and then entered. "Great, Tyler's here," Brixlee remarked sarcastically."Like I'm happy to see your face!" Tyler retorted with a scoff. He walked over to the extra chair beside Nathan and sat down."I'm hungry!" he exclaimed loudly."You didn't have to announce it," Brixlee replied, trying to annoy him."This is why I don't like you," Tyler implied, rolling his eyes."And I don't like you either!" Brixlee responded, raising her voice."Your voice is annoying.""It's said that when a guy constantly picks on a girl, it means he has a crush on her," Brixlee claimed, and Tyler frowned."I'm not picking on a girl; I'm picking on you!""Will you guys cut it out?!" Nathan snapped, putting an end to their bickering."He... she started it!" they both chorused simultaneously. The food arrived shortly after, and Brixlee sat down to eat. Tyler pulled his chair closer to her table and sat facing her."Let's eat," he said, savoring the sight of the food with his eyes."I don't want to argue with you... just eat if you want," Brixlee replied dryly, digging into her meal.Next day…Nathan Grey's patience was tested as he paced back and forth, waiting impatiently for Tyler and Brixlee to arrive for the crucial meeting. Although he had instructed them to come early, they seemed to have defied his request. The meeting meant everything to him, and it was the only thing standing between him and becoming the largest tech company in the world. Nathan was ready to settle for anything to achieve his goal. Finally, Tyler walked in, staring intently at his phone. It was clear that something about him was different. He was dressed in an overall red tuxedo and was smiling more than usual. Nathan was taken aback by his appearance. Tyler had always been a casual guy, always wearing jeans and hoodies. Nathan's initial reaction was to attack Tyler in a low tone for being late, but he held himself back and waited for Brixlee to arrive.Minutes later, Brixlee walked in, and Nathan frowned. She was the last to arrive, but she smiled, unlike Nathan's flared nostrils. Brixl
Brixlee walked into the office, deep in thought about the deal she had made with Xavier. She had finally agreed to do the fashion show if he would help them with the riddle. She had mixed emotions about it, but if that was the only way to help Nathan then it was worth it. Dropping her bag on her desk, she noticed Nathan with his head resting on the table, fast asleep. She quietly took a seat at her desk, trying not to wake him.Suddenly, Tyler walked in, loudly announcing his presence and disrupting Nathan's sleep. Nathan looked at her for a few seconds and smiled wryly."When did you get here??" he asked."Just now," Brixlee replied back.Tyler rested on Brixlee's desk and let out a sigh of frustration. "I found nothing! Maybe we should try finding new investors," he said."You don't think I've tried?" Nathan replied, annoyed, "Jessica Lopez is the only one interested in investing in the new smart patch. Sorry to burst your bubble, but we're stuck with her.""It's okay. We still have
"Fear is not the enemy. It is a compass pointing you to the areas where you need to grow.""Don't leave," Nathan pleaded, his grip on Brixlee's hand tightening. She turned to look at him, and his face was so close to hers that she could feel his breath on her skin. For a brief, dizzying moment, her heart raced faster than ever before. Was he always this attractive? She quickly pulled her hand away and pressed her palms to her racing heart. "I think you should get some sleep now," she said softly, her tone gentle. Helping him back to the couch, Brixlee watched as Nathan dozed off. When she was convinced he was deeply asleep, she silently slipped out of the door and into the big lawn outside the gate.It was almost midnight, and the streets were eerily quiet as Brixlee tried to hail a cab. Her anxiety grew as she noticed a car with black tinted windows slowly tailing her from behind. She quickened her pace, knowing all too well about the dangers of walking alone at night. The car contin
Next day…Nathan sighed as his phone beeped for the 15th time. It was Tyler. He had been texting him nonstop all morning to convince him to allow him tag along to the art gallery opening. He dipped his phone into his pocket and got out of the car. He was wearing a suit as usual, he knew he had told Brixlee to dress casually because he didn’t want them to look too serious but he couldn’t help it. He was used to wearing official outfits. As he made his way to his office, he was greeted by every employee he came across. He finally got to his office and to his surprise, Brixlee was already seated, waiting patiently for him.“This is new” He remarked taking his seat.“I was just too excited that I couldn’t sleep” She replied with a grin.Nathan didn’t notice her outfit until minutes later. She was wearing a hoodie with jeans and sneakers. He frowned. He had told her to dress casually but he may have forgotten to add “not to casual”.“I said dress casually, not too casual” Nathan said smili
Nathan Grey froze in his steps staring at the man before him. It was his father, the man he had run away from years ago. He had always harbored a deep resentment towards the man who had never understood or appreciated his mother when she was alive.Nathan felt a wave of anger and resentment wash over him. He had worked so hard to distance himself from his father, and now here he was, confronted with him again. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, his father spoke. "I'm glad you're here," he said quietly. "I wasn't sure if you would come."The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. Nathan’s heart raced as he stared down at the floor, struggling to keep his emotions in check. "Why are you here?" he asked, his voice cold."I'm the investor Gerald told you about," his father replied. "I had no idea you would come in person, I would have sent my secretary instead."Nathan felt a flash of anger. He had been working so hard all these years to make a name for himself, and now his
Nathan hadn’t shown up in his office for the past two days and Brixlee had become really worried. He was obviously still shaken about his whole ordeal with his father. But Brixlee was desperate, she needed to get to Nathan’s father first before she could be able to get more information about her late mother and Nathan was the only one who could help her. They also had a lot of things to settle in the office, like finding an answer to the riddle Jessica Torres gave them because obviously, they weren’t going to get help from Nathan’s father anymore. By the end of the day, Brixlee and Tyler had agreed that they would go check up on Nathan if he doesn’t show up at the office the next day. After Brixlee got off work, she had coffee with Amerie. The two had gotten a little close over the last two days and she has became the only female friend Brixlee had. They had a lot in common and Amerie was obsessed with her. They spent about an hour at the cafe before Brixlee finally left to see her gr
After the whole little bounding they had, Nathan finally returned back to work but not before Talia almost murdered him for not keeping in touch with her and almost worrying her to death. Nathan had apologized and had promised her that he would visit her granny that weekend. The weekend was finally here, they hadn’t found the answer to the riddle Mrs. Jessica Lopez gave them and Brixlee had decided that she would do the fashion show for Xavier in exchange for the answer. She hadn’t told anyone about it, neither Nathan nor Tyler but she couldn’t resist telling Amerie. They had gotten really close and she really liked how accommodating she was. That Saturday, Nathan left work early because he had plans. He had promised to visit Talia’s granny and he was bent on doing so. He had given up all hope with finding an answer to Jessica Lopez’s stupid riddle. He was going to find new investors. Nathan zoomed his sleek black car up the long, winding driveway of Talia's family mansi
Confusion and surprise washed over Brixlee’s as she looked up into the face of her rescuer. It was Nathan. His steady gaze met hers with a reassuring glimmer, silently communicating that everything would be okay. He carried her away from the runway, his steps strong and determined. Brixlee’s tears began to flow, not from embarrassment but from a release of tension and frustration. She clung to him, her face pressed against his chest, her earlier panic turning into gratitude for his timely intervention.Outside the venue, Nathan gently lowered Brixlee to her feet, his hands still supporting her, as if unwilling to let her face the world alone. He slowly removed her mask as they stood beneath a canopy of blooming cherry blossoms, their delicate petals fluttering in the evening breeze. The soft scent of flowers filled the air, offering a moment of solace and tranquility.Brixlee took a deep breath, her racing heart finally finding a rhythm. She looked up at Nathan, her voice trembling
The day had arrived, three months after the harrowing incident that had brought their lives to the brink. The grand baby shower was a celebration of life, a testament to the strength and resilience of their bonds. Brixlee stood in her room, a radiant smile gracing her lips as she admired her reflection. Her baby bump had grown substantially.Nathan's voice pulled her from her reverie as he entered the room. His eyes were filled with admiration as he looked at his wife. "You look absolutely stunning, Brixlee."Brixlee's cheeks flushed with a rosy hue as she met his gaze. "Thank you, Nathan. I'm excited for today."He gently took her hand, his touch reassuring as he led her downstairs. The sight that greeted them was breathtaking — the house adorned with beautiful decorations, a testament to the love and care their friends had poured into organizing the event. The party began in full swing, laughter and joy filling the air as friends and loved ones gathered around Brixlee. Each gi
Nathan's heart raced as he was finally freed from the chair he was tied to, his thoughts consumed by the sight of Brixlee, wounded and in pain. He rushed to her side, his arms wrapping protectively around her trembling form. Panic and desperation surged through him as he saw blood seeping from her stomach, his voice a mixture of fear and urgency. "Brixlee, stay with me. Help is on the way. You're going to be okay."Brixlee's breaths came in shallow gasps as she clung to Nathan's presence. She fought to stay conscious, her gaze locked onto Nathan's as she whispered, "I... I'm scared, Nathan."Nathan's voice trembled, his emotions laid bare as he held her close. "I know, Brixlee. I'm here with you. You're strong, and we'll get through this together."Soon, the ambulances arrived. Paramedics swiftly took charge, attending to Brixlee's injuries and stabilizing her condition. With gentle but hurried movements, they placed Brixlee and Fredia onto stretchers, securing them carefully. Nathan'
Just as their hiding spot was about to be exposed, Nathan's swift action shattered the tension. He leaped out of their hiding place, his determination to protect his family evident in his every movement. Brixlee watched in a mixture of terror and admiration as Nathan confronted the masked man.Nathan's bravery did not go unnoticed, and he was swiftly captured by the masked man. Brixlee's breath caught, her grip on her emotions slipping as she watched her husband being led away. Her heart screamed with a mix of worry, helplessness. As the masked men secured Nathan and the others, Brixlee's mind raced, she needed to protect her family. As the masked men's attention was occupied, she seized the moment. With trembling hands and a racing heart, Brixlee stealthily crept out of the kitchen, her footsteps light against the floor. Her heart pounded in her chest, her thoughts consumed by the image of Nathan and the safety of their unborn child. Brixlee ascended the stairs, her steps careful a
“Say hello to my shitty friends” Six masked men stood at the door, their menacing presence causing the room to fall silent. Brixlee's heart raced as her eyes widened in shock. Beside her, Nathan's expression hardened, his protective instincts kicking in. Among the masked men, a figure stood out — Ronnie Anne, a friend who had suddenly turned to a foe. The air grew thick with tension as she locked eyes with Brixlee, her gaze cold and unyielding."Get on your knees!" Ronnie Anne's voice was sharp, her words cutting through the room like a blade. Brixlee's knees trembled, and a shiver ran down her spine as fear gripped her. She sank to her knees, her mind racing to process the unfolding nightmare."Why are you doing this, Ronnie Anne?" Nathan's voice was steady, a pillar of strength amidst the chaos. His attempts to keep Brixlee calm were evident in the gentle squeeze of his hand on her shoulder.Ronnie Anne's lips curled into a sinister smile as she spoke, her voice laced with bitt
Patty's mind raced, and in a split second, she concocted a lie. "Oh, Talia, I was just trying on Brixlee's robe," she said with an attempt at nonchalance, her cheeks flushed.Talia's gaze flickered between Patty and the robe, her expression a mix of disbelief and incredulity. "Trying on Brixlee's robe?" she repeated, a hint of skepticism in her tone. "Why?"Patty shrugged, feigning casualness. "I saw it earlier and thought it might look good on me. You know, I was thinking of getting a similar one."Talia's skepticism lingered, but she seemed to accept the explanation. "Well, okay then. Just... remember to ask next time, alright?"Patty nodded, her heart still racing from the near miss. "Of course, sorry about that," she replied, attempting to appear contrite. With a lingering glance at Patty, Talia turned and left the room, the door closing behind her. Patty let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, her pulse gradually returning to normal. After a moment to collect hersel
“Brixlee said we should stop by th…the…errr… fortune village to get our fortunes read so we should probably start going” Fredia stammered.Nathan furrowed his eyebrows, “Why should we get our fortunes read?” he asked, confused.“I mean your fortune. She said…by knowing the father’s fortune, you can predict the baby’s future” Fredia explained, hoping Nathan had bought his lie.Surprisingly, he did, “That tracks, that sounds like something Brixlee would say” he said with a smile. “We should get going, i don’t want to miss the movie”As Nathan and Fredia made to leave, Ronnie Anne stopped them.“You’re leaving without finishing the potrait?” She asked, her face suddenly stern.“Yeah, maybe some other time” Nathan replied.Ronnie Anne suddenly scoffed, “Do you always leave everything just like that because you got tired of it?!” she asked as Nathan and Fredia exchanged glances at her suddenly outburst.“Excuse me?” Nathan asked, still surprised.Ronnie Anne quickly cautioned herself, “I’m
Two Weeks Later… The early morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a soft, golden glow across the room. It was a tranquil Sunday morning, and a sense of excitement filled the air as Brixlee carefully held a vibrant balloon and a small, wrapped present in her hands. She stood beside Nathan's bed, a warm smile playing on her lips as she watched him sleep peacefully. As the gentle rise and fall of his chest indicated that he was starting to stir, Brixlee's heart fluttered with anticipation. She took a quiet step closer to the bed, her eyes fixed on Nathan's serene expression. Today was a day of celebration, a day to shower him with love and joy.Nathan's eyelids fluttered open, and his gaze met Brixlee's, surprise evident in his eyes as he registered her presence. Brixlee's smile widened, and she held the balloon higher, the colorful ribbon dancing in the air. "Happy birthday, Nathan!" she greeted, her voice infused with genuine warmth.Nathan blinked, momentarily
Nathan sat in his office, going through some files. He was engrossed in reviewing a stack of documents when the door swung open, and Paige walked in. Her eyes were fixed intently on her phone, a small smile playing on her lips. Curiosity piqued, Nathan looked up from his work and raised an eyebrow. "Paige, what's got you so captivated?" Paige's gaze shifted from her phone to Nathan, and her smile widened. "Oh, hi Mr. Grey. Sorry to interrupt, but I'm just watching your wife’s show. I'm a big fan of hers." Nathan's interest was piqued, and he leaned back in his chair. "Brixlee's show, huh? What's today's episode about?" Paige's eyes gleaned as she replied, "It's really interesting. She's helping her friend Emily find clarity about her husband." Nathan's curiosity deepened, and he couldn't help but ask, "Clarity about her husband? How so?" Paige's grin grew wider, this was it. Her role was to make sure Nathan watched the podcast or at least learn about it in order to set their
With the shirt still in Brixlee’s hands, she walked out of the bedroom and down the hall to the living room. Nathan was sitting on the couch, engrossed in reading a book. He looked up and smiled warmly as he saw her approach. "Brix, everything okay?" he asked, sensing her unease. Her heart pounded in her chest as she hesitated, unsure of how to bring up the topic. Taking a deep breath, she finally spoke up, her voice tinged with concern. "Nothing, I just wanted to know if you needed anything” she lied, hiding the shirt behind her flowing gown. Nathan's brows furrowed as he looked at her in surprise,"I’m fine, Brix," he replied, going back to the book he was reading. Brixlee's heart sank, her mind racing with possibilities. She wanted to trust Nathan, but the sight of the lipstick stain stirred doubts in her. She couldn’t bring herself to question him also even though it bothered her. She didn’t want anything to come between them or cause any misunderstanding. She made her way
