Ella:
“No, I am not!” I looked up facing all the three of them, all calm and confident but deep down I was shocked and scared. Why was she asking me this question all of a sudden!?
“Oh c’mon, will you lie to your own family now?” Bridget continued to dig further.
I stood firm with my answer and said, “ No, I ain’t lying Bridget!”
“What is this then?” She flipped out her phone and showed a picture where I was kissing Joe, It was today, outside the office!!! What was Bridget doing there? What should I do now? I panicked and prayed for some of Helen’s quick thinking to come to my rescue.
Forking on the last bit of pasta I calmly responded “ Well, it’s not something serious, hence I did not mention it!”
“Oh you naughty girl! I did a little background social media check though, just to be on the safer side, you know how protective we feel about you” Bridget giggled.
“Oh tell us, what is his name and where is he from?” Beatrice joined in thoroughly enjoying the conversation at my expense.
“Our brother-in-law’s name is Joe Jackson, his friends like to call him Joey, he isn’t as cute as the one in the sitcom, but he’s way too good for Ella momma, look!!” she showed the profile picture on his social media handle to Mary.
She put on her glasses to inspect the rest of the information murmuring, “ He is from Detroit, Michigan, ughhhh” she made a face before saying, “Ella, I wasn’t expecting you to find someone whose family must have been even lower than the one washing dishes at Four Seasons. We are so happy for you”
“I’m still a bit upset though, that you did not feel we are close enough to share such great news!” she let out a fake tear of concern.
“I’m sorry Mary, it was fairly recent, I certainly did not mean to hurt you.” I knew some sort of drama would follow this conversation.
“If you had good intentions towards me and your sisters, you wouldn’t have lied and kept such good news from us. Oh I am so sad today, Richard had married me thinking Ella would have another mother in her life but today I came to know Ella has not accepted me as her mother at all!” she lamented in her melodramatic tone.
“Awww I am really very sorry Mary! From now onwards, I won’t hide anything from you. How shall I make it up to you?” I asked her upfront because I knew she would make me pay for it in one way or another.
“By spending weekends with me from now on before my little bird flies to make her own nest” she sweetly replied caressing my hand. Now, when roughly translated into Marish(Mary’s code of conduct in English), this meant “I’m going to make sure you don’t get to date/marry anyone anytime soon”
I was really looking forward to going to the business conference this weekend with Joe. Ah how much more will I have to endure?
Ella:I learnt from Helen that the conference was a huge success. Everybody on our team got significant leads to give them the required headstart for December, the last month in this quarter as well as the new year.
Ella:Time seemed to be flying with just under a week left for Christmas. I had started tidying the house up since advent. The curtains and bedsheets were changed with fresh linen, carpets vacuumed till every speck of dirt had vanished. Today after dinner, I would sta
Ella:As the clock struck 12 on Christmas Eve, I made a wish asking God to send me my saviour and bless my parent’s souls. After attending the midnight mass, we come out of the church to be welcomed by tiny little flakes of snow colouring the whole landscape of
Ella:As soon as I get up, I flip my phone out and call Joe, “ Baby how are you doing?”
Ella:I was counting days until the 31st of December, absolutely nothing was affecting me, neither work nor Mary’s jibes nor Bridget’s obsession with being Mrs.Holt.
Ella:The following morning, I got up earlier than usual, feeling so elated I scream out loud after it further dawns on me that nobody’s home . Mary won’t barge in shouting orders at me. This was my house again and today was the 31st, my first anniversary
Ella:Even though she had tens of people working under her, every time I entered the salon, she would personally look after me as though I was her daughter.
Ella:I open the door to see Joe standing beside his priced red Ford Fiesta wearing a classic white shirt and grey trousers. His shirt is slightly open to highlight the dragon tattoos from his favourite movie series “Fast and Furious”.
Ella:(Instantly panicking) Oh my god!! He cannot know at any cost...at least right now! Alright calm down, think of something before the officer becomes suspicious!“Hmm Officer, I think you might not be aware of this but I happen to be Mr. Holt’s fiancee, we’re getting married this weekend” I stated, putting on my best smile.“Oh is it? Brilliant news! We from the New York Police Department wish you a very happy married life in advance! Congratulations!” he replied joyfully, extending his hand for a hand-shake.“Thank you so much Officer, we do not need any negative press and wish to put this incident behind us and hence, I have come here to just put an end to all of this. We simply do not wish to get into any legal hassles and
Ella:I woke up to the feeling of someone planting a warm kiss on each eye and then my forehead. Cooing, I dreamily opened my peepers to find James seated beside my bed, looking at me so adoringly, it made me melt.“Good morning Mr. Holt, you’re up early?” I blushed.“Yeah, have a couple of meetings set across the Asian time zones so gotta rush now. Just remembered, you have your spicy bachelorette today, enjoy one of your few last single nights but be good because I’m the bad one here” he threatened, suggestively untying my night-robe.“Stop it or you’ll be late!!” I protested, shyly clutching onto my modesty. He looked deeply into my eyes, kissed my lips for a good few minutes, and let go chuckling, “ I’
Bridget:I quickly rush out of the building not even waiting for momma. The whole pretense of being a happy sister and family during that conversation grossed me out. I should have been living with Mr. Holt in that luxurious condo, being waited upon by concierges, dressed in Dior and diamonds overlooking the NYC skyline...not that (anger slowly seeping inside my every cell again)“Bridget, where are you going? Will you wait for a second?” Momma huffed and puffed, as she finally caught up with me.“You managed to ruin the day for me, I don’t understand why we came to meet her in the first place?”“Because I wanted to know what she was up to? Back home, I could easily keep an eye on her but now!” Momma replied explaining...
Ella:Watching Mary’s fake ass walk in with her equally fake daughter made my heart drop a couple of tons to the ground. Mary wore a pink halterneck top and tight bootleg jeans looking as though she would pick up a customer outside a cheap NY club while Bridget was dressed in a white strappy mini dress. Pushing her botox lips too far apart, she sported a sham smile cooing, “Ella, my dearest daughter, how are you darling?” she asked, hugging and kissing me with absolutely zero affection from my end.“I am fine Mary, why are you here?” I questioned blatantly. It took every ounce of my strength to walk away from the conversation and them.“Well well, do I need a reason to visit my own child? We received your wedding invitation last weekend and today, it just so happens that I was vis
Ella:“Did she mention a name or something Lisa?” I curiously asked her while walking towards the living room. Is this another one of Mr. Holt’s surprises?“Apologies, she claimed to be a certain Mrs.Jonas” Lisa replied. As I entered the room, I saw a very frail-looking 65 something elderly lady dressed in a floral dress with leggings getting up to meet me as I approached her. “Good evening, I’m Joe’s mother” she introduced herself as I stood still, numb, unable to react.Despite dating Joe for over a year, he never introduced me to his family, always acting suspiciously whenever the topic of a family get-together arose. Now I know, he was never really serious about me which is why I never perhaps met his mother.&ldq
Ella:My phone beeped at 7 am and I unlocked it, snoozing the alarm to sleep for a few more minutes. The date displayed on the phone “9th of April...Holy shit!!” Days seemed to be flying at the speed of light. I couldn’t believe I was marrying James, who I was falling deeply in love with every passing day, who cherished me through my brightest highs and loneliest lows.I finally manage to get out of the bed, have a bath, and put on a fresh set of coordinating sweats.By the time I had come down for breakfast, I noticed that Mr. Holt was already done. He got up, fixed his tie, and walked suavely towards me. How is it possible that any man can look so perfect? The grey two-button suit paired with a Burberry white knit fit him like a glove, contemporary yet oh so sexy!
Bridget:My afternoon slumber on the sofa was broken by the sounds of the loud doorbell. I chose not to move because I was so sloshed from all the late-night partying at Mizzoni’s. Mary opened the door, it was the postman, damn his timing! and continued sleeping
Ella:I had only observed in movies how a woman would entice a man while pretending to eat a banana or a strawberry innocently. As though it was a double entendre, a subtle way of enticing him, letting him know what she would like to do to his member, how she would li
Ella:Shaking my head, I frown at him fretting, “You can be so full of yourself James”
