VALENTINA
BURNING MERCURY MOON PACK
My heart thumped harshly in my chest as I tried my best to stay in the shadows while I crawled to safety.
Screams and wails of the dying wolves pierced the air and sent constant chills running down my spine.
‘My father couldn’t have fallen…’
I recite the words over and over again in my head but I had witnessed it with my own eyes. Ryker had won the challenge, a successful coup that needed not the loss of sentry lives from both sides, a death battle for a new Alpha over my pack and he had won it right before I heard the bone snap in my fathers throat, my ex-mates eyes instantly zeroing on me through the crowd, a lust for blood in his glare.
The usurper had won.
My fingers caught on some broken shards of glass, the pain that lanced up my arms causing me to scream and that attracted the attention of the animal I was trying to escape.
Ryker! My eyes locked with his as he stepped over me.
“Told ya you can’t hide!” His silver eyes bore into mine, holding a look that only promised gore, I could see all the hairs on his arms on end, healing slashes across his chest bled crimson over his belly. His teeth were stained with blood, the blood of my parents. He had won the challenge and made sure his opponent won’t be alive to contest him again.
Rykers’ aura held a lust for blood so thick it choked with the thick soot and smoke from my burning pack house. It was like one of those nightmares where you’d wake up sweaty and gasping exactly this wasn’t a nightmare, and this was real.
“You really thought you could escape me huh, after all this time I craved for you? You’re mine Valentina and nothing would ever come between us ever again!” He growled as he neared me, blood dripping at his feet.
“You’re wrong!” I struggled out, my voice hoarse and throat weak. “The laws—”
“The laws are made by the Alpha Valentina! And guess what…” he bent so his lips were right by my ears. “I’m the ALPHA now!” He made sure to linger just so his words sunk into my ears, so he was sure I understood the nature of what was going on.
There was no more highercourt. No more sustained that governed my pack. He had torn it all down, murdered the rulers all just so he could ensure his hold over me. And I was helpless.
Tears welled up in my eyes again there had been no time to mourn before the guards my mother had ordered pulled me away from the massacre. Her last wish was to see I would be safe and yet it was all in vain.
“There is no one to blame for this but you Valentina! I made a mistake and you decided you could cast me away because of that now look what you have caused!”
He stretched out his hand and I could see the coat of blood. It was everywhere on him like a second skin, like he had taken a dip in a bath tub of blood.
“You know at first I didn’t want to kill anyone, but then I realized as long as he was alive, he’d never let me have you. And that was a chance I was not willing to take.” He said with a grin.
I said nothing, had nothing to say. I was cornered. Helpless. alone. My fate in the hands of a murderous infatuated mad man.
“Enough!” He bellowed suddenly, instantly calming the growls and howls from him wolves.
I flinched when he turned his eyes back on me. “Now how about you wipe all that blood and tears off of yourself and get into a more fitting dress. No Daddy is coming to your rescue this time!”
I gasp when he leans in on me, the cold air tainted with a strong metallic smell it filled my lungs and made me want to throw up.
He stroked my hair, slowly until he yanked my head back and I whimper in the disorienting pain. The hard lump in my throat rises and I find it difficult to breathe yet hold back my tears.
“No need to look so sad Val… turn that smile upside down as when dawn strikes tomorrow we will finally be wed”
He chuckled maniacally but stops as his expression hardens and his eyes redden again.“The next time you think you can escape me, let today serve as a friendly reminder.”
“Is that clear?” He snapped and I jolt a nod.
With a click he signals for a one of his cronies to take me out and before I can do so much as struggle, I'm being pulled my hair, my feet dragging across the floor and I scream when shards of glass cut deeply into my heels.
The pain numbs my senses but when the guard yanks on my hair, I lose my horror stricken composure and dig my claws into his leg. His howl of pain gives me some form of comfort but that was short lived.
In annoyance, he slammed my face on the floor and I feel heat rush to my face as I heard my nose break. My left eye paralyzed shut and I was sure I could feel my lips split down the middle.
I lay still, hoping the guard would take it as he had beaten the fight out of me and as soon as I felt the grip he had on my hair loose I took off, ignoring the pain that numbed my left foot and ached my back, I ran for the treeline, a desperate yet my only attempt at an escape.
Ahead was a dried oaktree stump, I knew because I had wondered shortly into these woods with Sara (my handmaid) before Rykers coup.
The moon did little to illuminate my way so I had to focus my vision in order to get a clearer look ahead and as soon as I got to the tree stump I ducked down behind it, placing my hand over mouth in a futile attempt to calm my rash breaths, peeping over the stump but ducking back down when the guard burst into view.
“Where are you little princess?” He snarled as he approached. I knew he could perceive my scent though faint in the nature of trees around us.
As his footsteps grew closer I wrapped my fingers around the hilt of a short dagger I had stowed and stashed in the lace of my torn night dress.
‘Please let him not find me…’ I cried inside, hoping he would lose track of my scent but all my hopes dropped the moment his boots came into view. A crooked smile on the guards lips.
“No!” I breathed out.
“Ryker’s gonna tear you up because of this!” He snared, stepping forward and I barely had time to react before the back of his hand slapped me so hard I fell face first into the dirt, my vision blurring and my head spinning.
“Who’s there?” The guard growled menacingly.
“I was sent by Ryker to track the girl, I’m glad you’ve found her.” A second voice said, a bold and commanding voice one that I knew I had heard somewhere before.
I pushed myself to a sitting position. my vision was still a blur but it was evident someone else was there.
“Oh, that’s good. Help me keep an eyes on her till Ryker gets—wait a minute, Ryker never knew the girl had ran off. I was the only one there when she dashed for the woods so how did you know that?”
I watched them silently, the disgusting taste of my own blood coating my tongue and all the bones in my body aching from the hours I spent futilely fighting off Ryker while he only enjoyed breaking me.
“Well you see umm—”
I shuddered when he moved. Fast. Too fast. He was merely a blur, one second he was five feet away from the first guard the next he was extracting a bloody hand from the guards chest who’s eyes had bulged so much out their sockets.
A chill ran down my spine the moment the guard fell limp to the ground and I bursted into tears when this second guard stepped forward.
“No! Please don’t kill me! Please!” My tears dissolved with the blood on my tongue. I brandished the dagger in front of me frantically hoping the blade would keep him away from me but it was like he did not care about my threat he just kept on walking. One moment he was a good distance away from me the next he had swatted away the dagger from my grip.
I looked directly at a rough bearded face that stared an inch away from mine. He had a full blonde beard with an unkempt mop of yellow hair that fell over his rough face and barely showed his eyes.
Whoever this man was, he had ripped out another man’s heart with his bare hands and he didn’t even need to shift to do it. He was more terrifying than Ryker which made me question.
“Who are you?” My voice was low, brittle over hours of screaming and crying.
But it was like he had not heard my question, no thoughts behind his eyes.
“Oh, Valentina…” he said softly, his left hand that was not covered in blood reaching for my face and I turned away on impulse but was more surprised when he actually stopped.
“I’m sorry.” He said flatly. “I shouldn’t have tried to touch you.”
A shrill howl pierced the nights sky and then I heard it, the sound of a hundred wolves stampeding through the forest, a response to the call from the guard this strange man that stared at me intensely had killed.
Ryker was coming.
I had failed to escape. I would become a slave mate in my own pack and in the hands of the usurper that killed my father.
“Say, if I save you, would you have a baby for me?”
I blinked but not because of the dust that has flown into my eyes, because I thought I had only imagined his question.
“What?” I asked, every passing second the vibrations of Ryker’s wolves trampling towards us increasing.
“You will have a baby for me once I save you!”
This time he wasn’t asking, he was telling.
My mind raced faster than the blood thirsty wolves that trampled through the forest. I had no choice either way, face being a slave mate to Ryker or risk it all with this strange murderer.
“Yes.” I said, but I could tell it wasn’t me had said it, my wolf. Somehow she trusted this man.
“Good! Can you stand?” He asked, pushing up to his feet and it was now that I truly comprehended his size. The man was a hulk, tall and broad dawning leather tactical trousers and a blood stained jacket.
“I think so…” I pushed myself up, balancing my weight on my less-sore left foot. Whoever this man was, I had no idea.
How he had found me, and why he was willing to help me were questions that plagued my mind the longer I stayed close to him.
“Your right foot is broken Valentina I may have to carry you. Give me your hand.”
He had stretched out a gloved right hand and I was about taking it before I had a second thought.
“Before I go with you, answer me this!”
His brows knitted together, he was clearly perplexed by my question.
“How do you know my name?”
“I was a friend of your fathers. We don’t have time Valentina! Give me your hand before we both get torn to pieces by a hundred blood thirsty sentries!”
Running the back of my hand over my grimy face I reached for his outstretched hand but the moment the moonlight caught on his face my heart stopped.
I gasped, horror draining the blood from my face and washing my face white.
Suddenly terrified for my own safety I took a step back but lost my balance on my broken right foot. I saw him reach for me as I fell back, his hand almost grabbing mine but I pulled my hands away from him. Anything was better, even Ryker the usurper was better than this, I would never be safe with him.
The last thing I saw before my head cracked unconscious against a thick tree bark was the murderous glower that lighted in the eyes of this rouge Alpha.
VALENTINAPACK OF LOREI had heard so many rumours about the pack that belonged to the insane Alpha Lucean. A man who had laid siege to my pack for thirty-two nights, only retreating and going into a crazed rampage to murder a dozen of his own sentries when the harbinger had told him he had lost his wife and son during a complicated birth. He was the sole survivor of his bloodline, having no siblings and no mention of his parents. If he hadn’t killed them also that is.It was hard for me to forget the face, the face that attacked my pack and weakened my fathers wolf before turning back, covered in the blood of his own men he had mercilessly killed in his insanity which then dubbed him the name, mad-Alpha.It was said that once an Alpha loses his Luna he also loses his mind. Like a part of him is lost with her, worst when he loses a child along. The face of Alpha Lucean had been carved into my thoughts, the red glint in his eyes that’s fateful night he attacked my pack, his wolf pouncin
LUCEANPACK OF LORE‘Customary?‘Mate?“How in the moon goddesses name did I ever think it was going to work Jayme?!” I roared to my Beta who sat stood atop my work desk, water dripping down his chin. He had just come to give me a status report on the recent scarcity of game in my packs outlands but I found it a great opportunity to sit him down for a lecture.“Well, you did almost kill her father once in the past so…” Jayme said sarcastically, his brown hair sleek wet from melted snow.I shot him a glare, one that made him reluctantly apologize. Her face was always on mind, Valentina could be described simply as having Angelic beauty; with silver hair and beautiful grey eyes and the cute way her full lips curved when she spoke made my cock twitch whenever I looked at her lips.“What do I do?” I asked him, slumping down to the ground and burying my face in my hands.“Well have you tried really telling her?” He asked.“Of course! She’s terrified of me. Who am I kidding she HATES me.”“T
VALENTINAPACK OF LOREI pressed my jaws tight together when his tongue went over my finger, the feel of his slow sucking and warmth from his mouth completely overshadowing the little pain from the wound. I leaned back, wanting to keep as much distance as possible between me and him but the more I leaned away, the more my wolf pushed me forward. After what felt like an eternity he finally let go of my wrist and I folded my arms across my chest again. Looking anywhere but at the Alpha that sat in front of me.‘Fucking TOUCH me! Caress my skin!!! I want to feel your warmth, I need to…’The instincts of my wolf came like intrusive thoughts into my head I mentally recoiled at them, reminding myself that this was the man that has almost killed my father and possibly was still responsible for the success of Rykers coup.“Your leg.” He said. I glanced at him and his eyes bore into my skull in that short time frame.“The fracture needs to be massaged. Give me your leg.” He side again but I rem
VALENTINAPACK OF LOREI sat on my bed, tracing my fingers up and down my sore thigh, the motion acting like both a physical and a mental massage, one that helped me cope with the stress. It was afternoon, though the clouds in Lucean’s pack always hung moody with a promise to snow, maybe not immediately some time later in the day.Once I felt my thigh was strong enough I pushed to my feet, my ankle popping with a crack but the pain had reduced far more.‘I wonder if that’s because of Lucean… wolves are always strongest around their mates…’The thoughts went as quickly as they came, my wolf returning to it’s dormant state within my mind. I inspected the short hallway, two able bodied sentries that had been stationed out my room straightened at my appearance. My had my fingers curled around the door frame before I walked briskly past them. But stopped when I realized they had been following me.“I need to be alone.” I said, pausing between each word. “Please I added.”“We have been order
VALENTINAPACK OF LORE“Worry less about Jayme, he’s harmless…” Teira said to me, honesty in her voice, though I doubt she knew he had just nearly strangled the wolf out of me.I kept my pace steadily beside her, some part of me felt more comfortable with the tall and beautiful Sentry, actually, almost all of me felt more comfortable with Teira even if all she showed towards me was cold formality. We climbed up a flight of stairs, the second and highest floor or the building and where I was sure only Lucean and a select few were allowed as the Sentries stationed at the main door to this floor growled rather ferociously once they picked my scent. To my surprise, these sentries did not bow or show any sign of salutation respect to Teira.“The Alpha has ordered he not be disturbed miss.”“The Alpha gave ‘me’ personal orders to bring her up here.” Teira fired back almost immediately.“We have our orders. Just as you have yours. We must consort this with him before—”“Do you two want to los
VALENTINAPACK OF LORELucean sighed when I my glare did not waver, his expression stoning and a flitting red flashing in his gaze which made a snake of fear slither through my body. His disapproval obviously, but why I did not know so I just looked on at him in blankly.“To claim your vengeance against Ryker first you would need to return to your strength.”Teira sashayed into the room, her voice cutting straight into me like the sharp edge of a knife. She picked up the journal from the table, closing the book and placing a hand on Lucean’s shoulder as her eyes settled in mine mockingly. “And even when you return to your strength Valentina, you will no be able to kill Ryker.”Lucean’s fingers pinched
VALENTINAPACK OF LORESeconds bled to minutes, minutes bled to hours which then bled to days until a full week had gone by I had seen less and less of Lucean, the lost company I had being the two sentries that guarded outside my room door. And though I had used the time to fully recuperate, I had to admit it (but only down in the deepest and darkest corner of my heart) I missed Luceans scent.Sometimes I found myself wanting to take the icy walk over to his pack manor but I was constantly blocked by the sentries, they have the same cautionary warning claiming they were only acting on direct orders from the Alpha. My days were spent, reading on an old and dusty dated novel I had found under the bed, was probably one of Teiras should has forgotten about. I’d wake in the morning, do the usuals of brushing and showering before a single younger lady would bring a sumptuous tray of breakfast that I never completely finished. The snow storm had became a blizzard over the past few days and I
VALENTINAMERCURY MOON PACK[FLASHBACK. FIVE YEARS AGO]I laughed when Sara shrieked, running laps around the throne room, her gown bundled in hand. The other maids looked on disapprovingly but none said a word. The moment I had her cornered, my throat burning with laughter, I flicked the insect at her. But in a stunning twist the mantis opened its wings, flying up and away from our grasps.“Oouh, I wanted to play more with him.” I complained.Sara heaved, face red. “Where do you even find those disgusting things—”“I supposed this is how Miss Sara spends her time, goofing off in the throne room instead of handling her chores.”On hearing my fathers voice we
ALPHA VALENTINAPACK OF LORE[SIX MONTHS LATER]Loud music boomed from the pack mansion. A celebratory occasion for the joining of all lands from the north to the central.Following the end of the war and with Jafarr’s help once he had awoken from his coma, I had regained control over my pack as its rightful heir. All the packs from the north to the central, where Lucean’s pack is situated had formed into a single alliance, each keeping their respective leaders but all functioning under one United Pack Nation.Lucean’s arms wrapped around my stomach, and I nestled my head on his chest.“Never knew you liked staring out the balcony, alone, at the twenty second hour…”“You’re kidding me right… I was on the roof the first time we met!”And he laughed so loud, but only carefully caressing my budged belly.“You really going to keep me guessing?” Lucean asked and I felt his lips on my neck.I smiled warmly. “Evelyn told me it’s a boy and a girl. We are having twins baby.”He was silent for
ALPHA LUCEANMERCURY MOON PACKI only forced myself to all my fours again when my spine had popped back into place. The ferocious growls from my mates wolf stunned and surprised me as her smaller form ravenously attacked my brothers silver wolf.I marveled at her beauty, Valentina had morphed into a grey wolf with white paws and a white tail, having grey along her back with sheening grey eyes. I only lunged forward when Ryker had her on her back, his maw going down upon her and that’s when we collided.‘GO VALENTINA!’ I linked to her as I tumbled over my brothers mass.We were Both back to our feet in no time. Rykers silver gleam raged.‘Brother…’ I linked to him.‘Luci…’ He linked back.‘I know how you feel, I know you feel betrayed—’‘Felt! I felt betrayed! Now I all I feel is rage.’‘We can still put this all behind us! Please Ryker, we are family!’‘Family died when I was abandoned to the hands of a mad man, not even a single act of avengement.’‘Ryker… we don’t have to do this…’
VALENTINAMERCURY MOON PACKI had drifted in and out of consciousness. My eyes blinking open before I would pass out again.I heard footsteps fade in and out from outside the cellar doors but in the confused state of mind that I was in it was hard did me to tell in what I was hearing was even real. When the door cracked open again someone slipped in. They stood just far enough so I couldn’t make our their face. The person drew closer and I flinched when I felt their hand hold my face.“So it is you…” The person said, betraying a hint of doubt.I knew this voice, and not from the cherry times before Ryker killed my parents or from the merry times I’d spent in the pack of Lore. But from another time, a time where I had been in this game scenario; chained to the ceiling by the wrists.“Jhamal?”x x x x xWhen my hands were snapped free I fell to my knees, pain aching through all my muscles.“Where— How— why—”“I fled after your mate had rescued your back then, stayed low with a pack of s
VALENTINAPACK OF LOREI trailed my fingers up and down the hilt of the dagger T'mara had given me earlier today. For the fourth time, I admired it, especially the sharpness of the blade. I had already accidentally pierced the skin of my fingertip after Teira had handed it over, and could see a small cut on my forefinger when I glanced at it.I carefully lifted the dagger up from where it'd been resting on the desk, bringing it close to the fireplace as I continued to look it over; It was beautiful. The red color that decorated the black hilt shone bright under the glow of the flames from the fireplace and I could see that T'mara had put much effort into making it. I felt comforted with it in my hands, and knew it could serve well in protecting me.Walking across the room, I decided to place it carefully into an empty drawer for the time being. Oddly enough, I felt almost vulnerable with it not on my being, and my fingers itched to take it up once more.Evening came fast and the sound
VALENTINAPACK OF LOREThe atmosphere in the woods became almost ominous the further we walked. The voices of the sentries dropped significantly, and a quick look around showed that they were all staring ahead, not particularly at anything, with intense expressions of concentration, which only grew when we came to a halt. The stock-still bodies of the sentries didn't sway in the strength of the wind like mine almost did, and I could see some of the sentries fingers twitching, as if resisting an urge.By then, unease had unfurled in my chest. I glanced at T'mara, and immediately she placed a finger against her lips, the color of her eyes which usually mirrored her son's glazed over, an almost wet look in them. Alarmed, I looked at Lucean, however, he was the picture of calmness. His arms were folded across his wide chest, warm eyes almost languidly looking around us before settling on me. Immediately, he straightened from where he'd been propped against the tree, becoming concerned at
VALENTINAPACK OF LOREMy hand immediately lowered to the pistol in the depth of my coat's large pocket, and I backed towards the car as the sentries moved to stand before Sara and myself, bodies tense and eyes wide with alertness.I could see Arie leaning against the railing of markets wall, arms lifting to fold across her chest as she watched the advancement of the sentries."I recognize you." A male sentry pointed a finger at Henri as he spoke, a sly smile lifting his lips and eyes glittering dangerously. The male was Jayme's height, which was very tall, and his body was lean and well muscled. His blond hair was slicked back and seemed to gleam under the afternoon sun."You're from that Lorean pack," The blond-haired sentry paused a few feet away from the sentries, and he rested a hand against his hip, cocked his head. "You were in a meeting with an Alpha, Lucean I believe, a year ago."Henri said nothing, and tension cracked in the air. My lower back grazed the boot of the vehicle
VALENTINAPACK OF LOREMy eyes fleetingly followed the movement of the door as it opened, and I smiled brightly up at the man who stood behind it; Jack. His expression was grim as he looked upon me, Teira and then Jayme.Jack sighed heavily before stepping aside, gesturing with his head that we enter his home.Immediately I took notice of the strong scent of soup, and my eyes landed on several steaming bowls on a kitchen table, which Sara stood beside."Good day," She called to me, lifting a small spoon and dipping it into one of the bowls. My gaze went to Jack who stood stiffly and almost awkwardly in his living room, his eyes darting between Teira and Jayme, who stood close by me."Good day to you too," I greeted Sara, walking to her and peering down at the bowls. Brown liquid filled them to the brim and I saw several small potatoes and sliced carrots resting in it. Sara immediately dropped her spoon and pushed one of the bowls towards me."Jack made soup for everyone. Would you lik
VALENTINAPACK OF LORE"Is that a pistol?" Sara asked, widening eyes lowering to the weapon in my hand after I stepped outside with her. Her arms were wrapped around her stomach, almost as if she was comforting herself as she continued to stare at the gun.Her face, which had looked distressed even before we had stepped outside, grew even more bleak at the sight of the dark pistol in my right hand."Yes. It is," I licked my lips after the cold weather made them dry and glanced behind Sara to see Jayme walking by. His head lowered in a nod as he caught me watching and I returned it before he walked out of sight, sentries trailing after him.Throughout the week that had passed after I'd had dinner at Clover's home, Jayme and I had begun talking amicably for long periods of time. There was no tension between us, and I at times either found myself being amused by him or impressed by his work-ethic.I looked at Sara. "What did you want to speak to me about?" I asked, knowing that the secon
VALENTINAPACK OF LORE"Are you certain that you don't want this?" I offered Teira a bowl of stew for the second time. She curled her upper lip and eyed the bowl I held up towards her.Teira's arms were folded behind her back, and she stood near the walls of the home, with Henri now by her side.Jayme was casually walking around the room with FredNeok trailing along behind him, and Elle was sitting stiffly in a rocking chair, back straight and eyes piercing as she looked over each individual seated for what seemed like the seventh time since she arrived at the home, which had been ten minutes ago."No thank you. I generally tend to prefer my food being a bit more...raw." Teira flashed a strained smile as she said this, showing her fangs."You ate T'maras’ casserole, though." I pointed out."I wouldn't want to hurt her feelings by refusing.""Do you not care about hurting my feelings when you refuse the generous bowl of stew I took out for you?"Teira's eyes narrowed whilst I smiled in
