CHAPTER ONE
-WILHELMINA-
I woke up slowly, my senses struggling to adjust. The sound of a soft beeping intruded upon my consciousness, the rhythmic pulses both foreign and comforting. A faint antiseptic smell prickled at the back of my nostrils, a testament to the sterile environment I found myself in. My body felt heavy, weighed down with a fatigue that seemed bone-deep.
My eyes fluttered open, assaulted by the pale fluorescent lighting, its harsh glare softened by wispy white curtains drawn around my bed. The room was unfamiliar but impeccably clean, the walls painted a soothing shade of seafoam green. Potted plants dotted every corner, their vibrant green leaves reaching out towards the sunlight streaming in from the window.
I was in a hospital bed, my body covered with a soft, white quilt that felt as feathery light as a cloud. A soft humming echoed through the room, emanating from what appeared to be a sophisticated machinery nearby, laced with wires and tubes hooked up to my arm, its digital screen blinking with various numbers and symbols.
The door creaked open and in walked a woman in a crisp white coat. She had sharp, intelligent eyes that darted from my face to the machinery beside me and back again.
"Ah, you're awake," she pointed out the obvious, her lips curling into a small smile. She moved toward me with a grace and precision that spoke of years of repeated motions, and began checking various monitors and scribbling notes on a clipboard.
I tried to sit up, but she gently placed a cool hand on my shoulder, easing me back down. "Don't strain yourself," she instructed kindly.
"I... where am I?" I managed to croak out, my throat feeling raw and dry.
"You're in the hospital," she replied, adjusting the IV line attached to my arm. "We've been monitoring you closely ever since your brother brought you in. You were pretty out of it."
Quickly, my mind flashed back to the forest, Boris with the Alpha's Crown and the Wolf's Bane, Weldon's worried face. I winced, trying to sit up again, but the nurse gently pushed me down.
"Easy now," she soothed, her hand resting comfortingly on my forearm. "You had a close encounter with Wolf's Bane, and it took quite a toll on your body. You are lucky that a small dose entered your system."
My heart pounded. "Boris..." I stammered, the words tumbling from my lips before I could stop them.
The woman looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and concern. "The Alpha?" she echoed gently. "He explained to everyone what happened. You accidentally landed on a Wolf's Bane thorn bush."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. That was not the true story. Boris had deliberately poisoned me with a vial of Wolf's Bane. I bit my lip to suppress a protest. Lies. Boris was spinning lies to cover his deceit. The nurse misinterpreted my silence as shock and patted my arm reassuringly.
"There, there," she cooed, her fingers brushing against my forearm in an attempt to soothe me. My heart pounded violently against my ribcage, but I forced myself to remain still.
"Where's my brother?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
The nurse fixed her gaze on me, a slow, contemplative look. "I will call and let your family know that you woke. You should rest until they get here."
As she left my room, I was left to my thoughts. My mind was a whirlwind of confusion and fear. Boris' betrayal echoed painfully deep inside me. I was aware of his arrogance and rudeness, but I never imagined he would stoop so low as to cheat in order to become the Alpha. And Weldon... what happened to him after he carried me away from Boris and out of the Dark Woods?
A flurry of questions swarmed my mind, each one stinging sharper than the last. I tried to sit up once more, pushing through the heavy blanket of weariness that had settled over me. My body protested, every muscle screaming in rebellion, but my determination held firm.
Just as I managed to prop myself against the stack of pillows, the door creaked open once more. A tall, familiar figure stepped inside. Weldon. His broad shoulders slumped ever so slightly and his normally stoic eyes seemed dimmed with worry.
"Weldon..." My voice was a hoarse whisper.
He turned at the sound of it, his eyes lighting up and a small sigh of relief escaping his lips. "Thank the Moon Goddess, you're awake," he said, crossing towards me in long strides until he was by my side. His hand, rough and warm, reached out to gently touch my cheek. The familiar contact grounded me, the slight tremor in his fingers telling me just how worried he had been.
"How are you doing?" he murmured, brushing a stray curl off my forehead. His hand was warm and strong, a reassuring presence that was both familiar and comforting.
"I..." I swallowed, feeling the dryness in my throat intensify. "What happened?"
Weldon cast a quick glance towards the door before turning back to me. His eyes bore into mine, unblinking and serious as he spoke in a hushed tone, "Boris…he claimed the Alpha's Crown, and I rushed you back to the pack grounds where you were treated for Wolf's Bane poisoning."
"Boris is the Alpha?" I croaked out.
"Yes," Weldon confirmed with a grimace. "He is."
"He cheated" I protested weakly, my heart thundering against my ribs.
"I know," Weldon said. His gaze met mine again. "Boris has never been able to defeat you before, even back when we were in school together. So it's surprising that he suddenly has the ability to defeat you now. It doesn't add up in my mind. And I know Boris very well; cheating is not something he would hesitate to do."
The revelation seemed to settle into the air like a heavy fog, threatening to suffocate us both. His hand was still on my cheek, his thumb gently brushing away a stray tear that I hadn't realized slipped from my eyes. I held his gaze, seeing mirrored in it the same pain and disappointment that was lodged deeply within me.
"What do we do now?" I barely managed to croak out, my throat so dry it felt as if it were lined with sandpaper.
Weldon removed his hand slowly, "For now…you need to recover, heal. Wolf's Bane isn’t something one can brush off easily. Once you are healed, we will uncover where Boris managed to get his hands onto that Wolf's Bane."
"How will we do that?"
"We have our ways," Weldon said, his voice steady, his confidence a balm to my troubled spirit. "Especially, now that we hold two of the top positions in the pack."
I arched my brows in confusion, "What do you mean?"
Weldon’s lips curled into a soft, comforting half-smile. "Despite the Elders' objections, you were appointed as Delta and I was chosen as Beta. It's all thanks to your father and the former Alpha Gravemaw. They fought tirelessly to keep you in the top position."
"Delta," I murmured. "They gave me the position of Delta..."
A wave of relief washed over me, pulling along the last bits of tension from my shoulders. I leaned back into the pillows propping me up, allowing myself to take a moment to breathe. Despite my loss, despite Boris's deceit, there was still hope for justice.
Weldon nodded, his face softening ever so slightly, "Yes, but you should have received Beta instead of me because you discovered the Alpha's Crown before I did."
"Delta, Beta... it matters not," I said finally, opening my eyes to meet his concerned gaze. "What matters now is that Boris' treachery doesn't go unpunished. That we find out where he got the Wolf's Bane and ensure nothing like this ever happens again."
"Agreed," Weldon said, his gaze meeting mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch. "We'll start investigating as soon as your strength returns. Until then, you need to rest and recover."
"I don't want to be cooped up in here," I protested, my voice weak.
"I know," he said softly, brushing a stray curl back from my forehead. "But this is necessary. You need to regain your strength."
"But..." I began to argue, but he silenced me with a piercing look.
"No arguments, Mina," he said sternly. "This is not up for debate."
I fell silent, knowing it was useless to argue. Weldon was stubborn, especially when it came to the wellbeing of his younger siblings. He cared too much to let us risk our health.
"Alright, Weldon," I replied in a hiccupping whisper, my reluctance evident in the droop of my shoulders. "I'll rest... I'll recover."
CHAPTER TWO-WILHELMINA-It had taken approximately seven days since I'd woken up in the hospital, recovering from being poisoned by Wolf's Bane. Today, at last, I was being released. According to the doctor, all traces of the poison had been eliminated from my body and it would no longer have any effect on me.Feeling the fresh air on my face as I stepped out of the stifling infirmary was like being reborn. The hospital room had started to feel like a prison cell, and the mere sight of the towering pines and lush greenery of our territory made my heart flutter in relief.Weldon had arrived early that morning to take me home. He watched me with a protective gaze, always ready to leap to my side if I showed any sign of faltering. But I was a wolf. We were built tough and we healed fast. "I'm okay, Weldon," I reassured him as we walked to his SUV.He gave me a sidelong glance, his fingers tightened on the steering wheel. The raw concern in his gaze reminded me of how much he cared for h
CHAPTER TWO-WILHELMINA-After the dinner was finished and satisfied sighs echoed around the room, Severa and I slipped away. Raina shot me a knowing look as we quietly excused ourselves. The night was alive with starlight, painting the earth in hushed tones of silver and shadows. We began our nocturnal adventure into the forest, guided by the familiar paths that were carved into our memory. The moon, in its haunting beauty, bathed the pathway in an ethereal glow. Its light danced on the leaves, and made the dew drops twinkle like a thousand tiny stars. We meandered along the trodden trail, our steps quiet against the rustle of leaves beneath our feet. The forest was a symphony of sounds, where the occasional hoot of an owl could be heard harmonizing with the soft cadence of crickets, and each rustle of the trees was an interlude that added depth to the melody. Our destination was the Old Willow – a generous giant of a tree – older than anyone could remember. Its bark was thick and gn
CHAPTER TWO-WILHELMINA-The growl that rumbled from my chest was loud and clear this time. Weldon cleared his throat. "Mina, maybe you should rest. You were only discharged from the hospital today, and your doctor emphasized the importance of resting."With an almost imperceptible nod, I acknowledged Weldon's suggestion, my gaze remaining locked on Boris. The shadows danced across his smug face, mocking me. Grudgingly, I broke eye contact, "Just because you won the title doesn't mean you've earned it."My words hung in the air, a final punch leaving Boris's smirk faltering for a moment. I turned on my heels and strode into the house through the backdoor. Inside, the warmth of the home enveloped me, but the chill of the confrontation lingered in my bones. I moved through rooms filled with the chatter and laughter of my parents and our guests, the sound now grating on my frayed nerves. I headed up to my room, a place that always felt like an oasis amidst the chaos of pack life.Closing
CHAPTER TWO-WILHELMINA-The next morning marked the start of my duties as the freshly appointed Delta. Despite the unsettling encounter with Boris, I was ecstatic to finally be fulfilling my lifelong dream. Before the sun even peeked over the horizon, Weldon and I departed from the house and headed towards the pack mansion. The mansion was a sprawling edifice that had stood strong for centuries, the stoic backbone of our pack's heritage. It gleamed in the first light of morning, encased in dew-kissed ivy and nestled amidst lush greenery. The sight of it always filled me with a mixture of awe and reverence; a castle made of stone and timber, standing tall against the backdrop of dense woodland. It felt surreal to walk down those long halls as an authority figure rather than a subordinate. Weldon by my side, I reveled in this new reality, drinking in every pristine corner of this age-old mansion. Our first task of the day was to meet with the pack's elders and the previous leadership.
CHAPTER TWO-WILHELMINA-The silence in the room was replaced by gasps and whispers, a sea of wide eyes staring at me in disbelief, as if I was a mirage in some barren desert. But the loudest sound was the pounding of my heart in my ears, beating like a wild drum against my ribs. His intentions were clear from the start; his warning the day before was a foreshadowing of this plan. But I wouldn't fall for his manipulative offer, especially after already turning him down once.I pulled my hand away, crossing my arms. "Boris," I began, my voice steady despite the turmoil within me.As I was once again preparing to decline Boris's advances, a voice shattered the tense silence in the room."Oh how wonderful!"All eyes turned towards the entrance, silhouetted in its archway stood a woman of formidable stature— Trisha Gravemaw, Boris' mother. A woman in her late fifties, clothed in a dark green dress that hugged her tall and lean figure. Her presence was powerful, commanding respect from eve
CHAPTER TWO-WILHELMINA-As the cheers and howls resonated through the grand hall, I stood beside Boris, my gaze fixed on the crowd. His arm snaked around my waist possessively, his grip tightening with each cheer. Fear and dread pooled in my stomach, but I forced a serene mask onto my face. I was Luna now, an Alpha female of the pack, whether I liked it or not.My gaze fell upon my father, his expression filled with worry and concern. Though the mirthful cheers echoed around him, he remained stoic, his eyes locked on mine, echoing my turmoil. Leon sat beside him, trying to maintain a façade of confidence while his eyes, too, mirrored anxiety.I tried to offer a reassuring smile, but it fell flat.Once the applause subsided, Boris leaned into me—a chilling reminder of my new status—and whispered in my ear. His warm breath fanned against my neck, making my stomach churn with unease. "You have made the right choice, Wilhelmina," his voice coated with a smooth confidence that did nothing
CHAPTER TWO-WILHELMINA-Hours later, the sun had set, and I finally made it back to my house. Trisha's lessons had been grueling. She spoke at length about diplomacy, patience, and leadership. About strength without arrogance, about compassion without weakness. Her words echoed in my mind as I opened the front door. The living room was occupied by my father, mother, Weldon, Dermon, and Raina. They all had concerned expressions on their faces, filled with worry and anxiety."Wilhelmina," my mother's voice quivered as she rose from the chair, her eyes scouring me for possible signs of distress.I forced a smile, one that would hopefully mask the turmoil swirling inside me. "I'm fine," My voice echoed throughout the quiet room, bouncing off the wooden walls and heavy curtains. For a moment they didn't respond, their eyes so deeply engrained with worry that my return seemed to make no difference.Dermon hastily rose from his seat, "You aren't fine. The look in your eyes and the tone of y
CHAPTER THREE-WILHELMINA-Nearly a week had passed since the disastrous meeting. I spent my days alone in my room, trying to heal my wounded ego. The image of Boris' cruel and mocking expression, replaying the humiliating defeat over and over again. Trisha, my future mother-in-law, had been busy telling everyone that I was Boris' Luna and that our wedding was to be arranged in the near future. Just the thought of spending the rest of my life with Boris made me feel sick.I had never felt so trapped in my life. The suffocating pressure of what was being planned for me, the c
CHAPTER EIGHT-WILHELMINA-It had been a few days since I had confronted Boris about his decision to take Severa as his second wife. I was tired of his selfish decisions. He could do as he pleased with me, but I didn't want him to put another woman through the same pain and suffering I was about to endure.I was well aware that my threats to him were bold, but they were also completely genuine. I was determined to destroy Boris. He would pay for all the pain and suffering he inflicted on me, Severa, and our families.Bei
CHAPTER SEVEN-LEON-Her eyes widened ever so slightly, a tiny crack in her otherwise pristine facade. "A divorce," she echoed softly, the gravity of my words sinking in. "Is that what you believe the solution is?""Yes." I said, standing firm in my decision. "I cannot and will not allow you to harm our children with your twisted ideologies. It ends here, Trisha." The words hung heavy in the air, a palpable tension building between us.A sardonic chuckle slipped past her lips as she turned back to the window, he
CHAPTER SEVEN-LEON-Despite being aware that Hiro would be fully healed by tomorrow, I left him in the care of the manor's salutary. His confession had left me reeling, a whirlwind of emotions spinning within me. Betrayal, anger and fear crept into my heart like unwelcome guests. I had always been aware of my wife's deceitful tactics to achieve her desires, but I never could have fathomed the idea of manipulating her own daughter into a relationship. Why would Trisha do something like this, I thought. She had alway
CHAPTER SEVEN-HIRO-But then, suddenly, amidst the deafening roar of my pain and fear, a new sound punctured through the chaos - a growl. It was primal, animalistic, the sound of a beast cornered and threatened. I thought it was Boris, but then I realized it was someone else. Boris ceased his assault."What do you think you are doing?" It was our father. The voice was like a whip crack in the silence that followed. My father stood at the doorway, a terrifying silhouette against the flickering hallway lamp. His eyes, icy and hard, were locked onto Boris, his tall frame rigid
CHAPTER SEVEN-HIRO-The rough, calloused hand on my shoulder felt like the icy hand of death itself, a chilling reminder of the power my elder brother wielded. Boris's grip was unyielding, his eyes as cold as the winter. My heart thumped wildly in my chest."What were you thinking, Hiro?" he growled, steering me down the corridor with a firm grip. "What did you think you could accomplish, getting in the way of our mother's plans?" His voice echoed ominously off the cold walls.
CHAPTER SEVEN-ERIS-When the dinner was finally over, everyone excused themselves, heading off in different directions. Kinnison and I escaped to the sanctuary of the estate's moonlit garden. The air was thick with the scent of radiant azaleas, blooming roses, and honeysuckles, a perfect backdrop to our quiet conversation.Underneath the glowing moonlight, Kinnison held my hand gently, his touch as soft as the petals of the flowers surrounding us. With each breath, I took in not only the fragrant perfume of the blossoms but also his sweet, familiar scent that was now interw
CHAPTER SEVEN-ERIS-I noticed Boris's sly grin from across the table. His eyes twinkled mischievously as they met mine; he knew something, something I didn't understand. The scent of citrus became stronger, clouding my senses, making me feel like I was floating on an orange sea. Where is that smell coming, I thought.Looking around the table, I met Prince Kinnison's gaze. His icy eyes were no longer filled with unyielding coldness but softened, like the first light of dawn breaking across a frost-laden fiel
CHAPTER SEVEN-ERIS-In less than twenty minutes, the dinner would start, and I had spent the past hour and a half preparing with the maids. My mother checked in occasionally to ensure my appearance met her expectations. The silver-gray dress I was wearing, adorned with threads of gold, was chosen by mother herself. It hugged my figure and perfectly highlighted the dark shade of my hair and the yellow color of my eyes. Each time, her eyes scrutinized every detail, from the dress I wore to the way my hair was sty
CHAPTER SEVEN-ERIS-Mother, with a stern expression, commanded that Hiro and I head to our rooms, while Zenesha was told to leave as we had some private matters to attend to. Father attempted to intervene, but Mother brushed him off, leading Prince Kinnison and Princess Alina to their respective chambers. The atmosphere in the manor was tense with unspoken tension as the family dispersed. As Hiro and I retreated to our separate rooms, I noticed a growing unease in his eyes, a mirror to my own apprehensions."Hi
