Ryder's Pov
Two weeks Later...I was barely holding on to the remnants of sleep when a persistent knocking echoed. I was a light sleeper and any slight noise I could hear from a mile away."Go away Ma Levine," I grumbled half asleep, as I already caught her familiar scent of freshly baked bread."I'm coming in," she announced from the other end and turned the doorknob."Ugh!" I grumbled in frustration, burying my head deeper into the pillow.Ma Levine walked in and pulled the duvet I was wrapped in, off me."I just want to sleep some more," I protested and covered myself with the duvet again.Ma Levine chuckled. "Who would believe that the almighty Lycan King, Ryder Nixon was such a big baby?" She teased and pulled the duvet off me again. This time around, she tossed it far away, and the only way I could get it back was by getting up from bed, which I was clearly not ready for. "Get up boy," she instructed as she made her way to my bathroom to prepare a warm bath water for me."Go have your bath, Ryder," Ma Levine tapped me as she got back from the bathroom."Why the rush?" I whined. "Just let me sleep for two more minutes, please," I said pleadingly and used the pillow to shield my face.Ma Levine chuckled heartily. "That's not happening," she said sternly and collected the pillow. "Today's the coronation of Startling Pack's new Alpha, and it's important you show up.""I don't care about their soon to be Alpha, I just want to sleep," I fussed. "Desiree can go in place of me."Ma Levine didn't insist further, which I found quite odd. Maybe she probably decided to listen to me for once.I sighed in relief, but before I knew it, droplets of cold water hit my face."Hey!" I protested, sitting up on the bed abruptly. "What was that for?""In case you've forgotten, you're the Lycan King," Ma Levine said and sprinkled more water on my face. "You have responsibilities, not just to yourself, but to the entire pack as well.""Okay. Can you stop sprinkling water on me, it's cold you know?" I accepted defeat because the stern look on Ma Levine's face indicated she was not backing down. "I'll go take a bath now," I told her and got up from the bed."That's good," Ma Levine complimented, as she smiled widely at me. To her, I'll always be the little boy she's taken care of since he was born. She was the only person I could bring my guard down and was permitted to relate with me like this with no honorifics."You're mean," I told her, my lips pursed as I rolled my eyes at her. "I hate you, Ma Levine."Ma Levine chuckled. "I love you too Ryder," she told me. "Come down for breakfast when you're done," she said and left my room.Ma Levine was the sweetest person I know, and I trust her wholeheartedly. So far she's the closest person to a family I've got left. She was my nanny, and according to my dad, no one genuinely cared for me like Ma Levine. If there's one thing I learned about my late Dad, it was the fact that he was a good judge of character. As I stepped into the shower, my mind flashed back to that night at the pub with the blonde haired girl. I shook my head at those thoughts since I felt guilty with being with another woman apart from Samantha. When I finished bathing, I got dressed and headed downstairs, the aroma of her cooking filled the air, and my stomach growled in response."Your meals are the best in the whole world," I complimented her, as she set the dining table.Ma Levine blushed. "Nice try, but you're not sweet talking your way out of going to Startling Pack," she said."Pfft, accusing me of being cunning, huh?" I pouted playfully as I walked towards the dining table. She chuckled. "Finish your breakfast in time, your car is packed out front," she informed.I sighed and sat down to eat my breakfast which included crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, toast, and a cup of strong coffee."Your meals are the best," I said in between bites, as I tried sweet talking my way one last time."Flattery won't save you, Ryder," Ma Levine replied, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. After I was done with breakfast, I went to meet her in the kitchen."Thank you for the meal," I said and planted a kiss on her cheek."You're welcome, now go," she pushed me out of the kitchen. "It's rude to go late to an event," she scolded."Who's going to question me for coming late?" I asked."I will," she said firmly. It's funny how one minute she's loving and the next she's completely strict."Fine," I replied, and went to my car, driving straight to Startling pack which was just an hour's drive from Moon Shadow pack."I have a good feeling about this pack," my wolf Otis said as soon as we arrived at Startling pack's ground."Don't start, Otis," I warned him. "I'm not interested.""What are you talking about?" Otis asked coyly, feigning ignorance."You know what I'm talking about," I retorted. "Don't start talking about mate or anything related to that," I told him. "I've had enough already.""Fine, you caught me," Otis admitted. "But believe me Ryder, just this once, this is different," he continued. "Besides, Samantha would want you to love, and be loved in return.""Cut it out Otis," I snapped. Bringing up Samantha's name always brought a stab of pain to my heart.Samantha and I have loved each other ever since we were kids. When we came of age and found out we were destined mates, our bond and love for each other grew stronger. Samantha was killed by a pack of rogue wolves on her way back from one of her charity visits. It was a well planned attack because up until this day, I could not even find a single lead to the rogues who killed her."Just–""I'm not interested, Otis," I cut him off, shutting down the whole conversation, and drove silently to the pack house. As soon as I drove through the pack house gate, Otis paced around happily in my mind."Something interesting is definitely waiting for us here?" Otis started again, ignoring my earlier warning."You never learn, do you?" I shook my head in disbelief. This is actually not the first time Otis is going on about a supposed mate. I know he's just trying to help, but as a Lycan, I can only get one mate, and sadly I lost mine because I was too incompetent and couldn't protect mine."Relax Ryder," Otis said cheerfully. "This pack has something great.""Pfft, what good can come out of Startling pack?" I scoffed, as I packed and got down from my car."You'll–""Welcome, Lycan King Ryder," a young lady who wore heavy makeup, and applied a nauseating perfume approached us, smiling sheepishly. "I'm Elsa Cruz, future Luna of startling pack," she introduced herself, bowing slightly, and then stretching out her hand for a handshake."I don't like her," Otis said disapprovingly."This is what you mean by the pack has something great, huh?" I taunted, but Otis ignored me.I shook Elsa's hand which was still outstretched, and for some unknown reason she held on to my hand a little longer, and the overwhelming scent of her perfume made me dizzy.Otis growled as Elsa held on to me a little, but I didn't let it escape my lips."This way please," Elsa said, the smile on her face getting wider as she ushered us into the pack house. "Here's your room, the crowning ceremony is starting in a few hours," she said. "I'll send over some ladies for your pleasure.""That won't be necessary," I said firmly, declining her offer."Alright," she said and walked out. About two minutes after she left, I could finally breathe in some fresh air.About two hours later after I arrived, the crowning ceremony began. Loud music blared from the speaker but I didn't bother going, and just stayed in my room instead."C'mon Ryder, loosen up," Otis whined. "Learn to have some proper fun for once.""No thanks, I'll pass," I told him. I know this was just an excuse to get me to leave my room, and probably confuse a random girl as my mate like he's always done.I plan on going to the dinner party, which has less noise, so once it's dinner time I'll go downstairs.Dinner time came earlier than I had expected, and I headed downstairs. After having our meals, the new Alpha London stood up."Lycan king, Ryder Nixon, thank you for gracing my pack with your powerful presence," London said, lifting his glass of wine to me."My pleasure," I said, and raised my glasses to him too."Mate!" Otis growled in my mind, as he looked over to some ladies whom I suspected to be omega's standing by the door."Not now, Otis," I warned."As the new Alpha of Startling pack, I am asking you to make a request and it shall be granted," London said proudly."I don't need anything," I told him."Take your time," London said. "Startling pack has a lot of beautiful things, especially LADIES," he wiggled his brows and chuckled heartily. "The offer is always on the table," he told me. "Serve the wine!" He ordered, and the omega's who wore skimpy clothes filled in.As they got closer, that's when the scent hit me. It was lavender, and the scent grew stronger as the omega's got closer."Mate!" Otis growled again, this time it almost slipped my lips."Hope this isn't one of your tricks?" I asked, but Otis ignored me, pacing happily in my mind.I took a deep breath, trying to see if I could work my way around Otis's tricks. It's never happened before for Lycans to get a second mate, so why do I feel this way?"MINE!" An overwhelming urge surged through me as I growled, grabbing the hands of the blonde haired omega who was about to pour me a glass of wine.Something about her was familiar...Aria's POVEverywhere instantly went silent as the Lycan King grabbed my hand. A frown formed in my face as I heard the words that slipped out of his mouth. There was no way he had just called me... his mate.I turned to the crowd behind me and felt my knees begin to shake as I saw that all eyes were now turned to him. I caught sight of Amanda whispering to her minions and the look she had on her face showed that she was much more surprised at the sudden turn of events than I was. I turned to Elsa and saw that she had the same look on her face too. I was about to turn to the Lycan king whose hold on my hand had now tightened to know if he was being serious when I saw London at a corner, glaring at us. He held in his hands a glass of wine and I watched it crack under his grip. He brought the damaged glass down on the table beside him and licked his lips, putting on a smile that I knew was nothing more than a facade before slowly striding towards where we stood. 'What is he doing?' I
Aria's POV "Was?" Ryder asked as he raised one of his brows. "What do you mean by 'was'?" I turned to London and saw that he now wore a frown on his face. A smile formed on my face and the moment he saw that, he shook his head. I guessed he knew exactly what I was about saying. "I was mated to Alpha London," I said with a small nod as I turned to Ryder. "But he rejected me as his mate so we are not together anymore." "Hmm," Ryder grunted as he brought his eyes to the ground. He kept his gaze there for some time, as if brooding over what I had said before raising his head in London's direction. "You heard what she said, Alpha London." "Yes, I did," London replied with a small chuckle as he brought his hands behind his back. I could see the dark look beneath the fake smile that he wore on his face as he slowly strode towards where I stood. He continued, "but Aria must know that I was only playing when I said so." Playing? The slap that he struck showed his intentions and it definite
London's POVThe snickers from the omegas behind me ate at me and the low chuckle the Alphas gave only tore my ego the more. I knew that I didn't love her, I never did, but I wasn't just going to let him take what belonged to me in the first place. It was only going to be seen by the other pack alphas as an insult. I knew that my statement of Aria not accepting my rejection was the only thing that could turn things in my favor but Elsa just had to open her mouth and speak. I clenched my fist as I saw the stupid omega throw a smile at me.I gritted my teeth as anger flooded me. She didn't just know that I had lost but she was mocking my defeat too. They all were.I made to rush at Aria but Ryder was faster than I was, pulling Aria back and stepping in her place. I stopped short after seeing him suddenly begin protecting her."Go back Alpha London, she is no longer your mate," Alpha Ryder said to me as he gave me a low growl. Seeing the sudden turn of events, I backed away from the lyc
Aria's POVAll eyes were pinned on me as I walked across the dining hall to the door that led out of the mansion. I could feel the gaze of the other omegas pierce me and hear their little murmurs but I didn't mind. They could do whatever they wanted. I wasn't part of the anymore.I brought my head high, smile forming on the face as I strode towards the door. I pushed it open gently and sighted Alpha Ryder standing in front of a black sleek car with tinted windows. He had his hands crossed behind his back and I could feel this majestic aura come off him. His eyes landed on me and I gave him a small smile, one that he returned with a stoic expression. My smile faded upon seeing his response and I felt down. I pulled my bag close to my chest as my pace towards his car slowed down."You took longer than I expected," Alpha Ryder said as he raised one of his brow. I felt my cheeks plush under his gaze and I only buried my face in my bag. Alpha Ryder upon seeing my reaction gave me a small
Ryder's POV I gripped my steering wheel tight as I kept my eyes on the road. I could hear the slow and calm breathing of the omega behind me. I looked at her face through the rear view mirror and my heart softened as they landed on her frail body. They really did her badly back at her pack. 'Is that affection I see you having there, Ryder?' Otis said to me and I growled. 'It's not affection, Otis, and you know it,' I answered him as I turned my eyes from the rear view mirror and brought it down on the road in front of me. 'I only care for her as every normal person with a heart would. Do not mistake my kindheartedness for love and affection.' 'Okay?' Otis tsked. 'From my view though, that's not what I see. You do know that I cannot only see what you see but I can also read your mind. So, I know--' "Shut up," I said out loudly, my mind-linking slipping out of my lips. Aria grunted in her sleep and I stilled. I looked at her through the rear view mirror again and sighed after watchi
Aria's POVI felt a light tap on my shoulder and my eyes fluttered open. I looked around, dazed for a few seconds as I tried to make sense of my surroundings. I almost began to panic after seeing that I was in a car when a somewhat familiar voice said my name."We've arrived, Aria," the voice said and I turned towards it. I felt my heart almost beat out of my chest when I suddenly came face to face with my new mate, the Lycan King Ryder. "You should get your things and come with me," he added as he turned and began walking away. As I watched him retreat into the mansion that was behind him, all events that had just happened suddenly came rushing back. The ceremony, the arguments, Ryder finally choosing me as a mate; a smile tugged at my lips as I grabbed my small bag and crawled out of the car.My breath left my lips and my eyes widened in awe as they came upon the huge mansion in front of me. Huge pillars adorned the entrance of the building, holding up the three stories above it th
Aria's POVThe long hallway I and Ma Levine walked through expanded until they reached the end where it opened into a vast room, one that was filled with different doors that led to other rooms and more hallways. I presumed the large room that we had entered to be a dinner hall as stacks of seats and rows of tables lined each sides of the spacious hall. A large painting hung on the wall, one that had so much abstraction to it that I could not make heads or tails of what it meant. "It's a painting bought from an auction that Ryder attended last two years," Ma Levine said after noticing my constant squinching as I stared at the picture."I don't... I don't really understand it though," I muttered as I turned to face Ma Levine. "How does one take this to be... art?""Ryder's father loved art when he was alive and found in them what others couldn't," Ma Levine said with a sigh as she smiled. Her smile slowly faded to a saddened frown as her eyes stayed on the painting. "I guess Ryder pi
Aria's POVAs I stepped in the room, I couldn't help but awe at what was going to be my room. My breath caught at the sight before me and I couldn't help but laugh incredulously as I immediately became wonderstruck. The moonlight filtered through the draped window, casting a bright gleam on the big bed a few feet away from me. Huge chandeliers hung down from the ceiling like stalactites, a brilliant radiance that made the whole room feel alive. The walls of the room was adorned with different abstract paintings and pictures, all adding to the life that the room had. Different tapestries, all of colors matching the calm tone of the room, hung across the wall at different locations and velvet sheer curtains hung over the large bed. Two plush cushions say neatly at the foot of the bed and a study chair and table, a lit lamp on top, stood at the end of the room, right beside the window."This place is... it's really beautiful," I muttered, more to myself than to Ma Levine as I slowly wal
Ryder’s POV“Hudson!!!" I growled as I stood from my hiding place. My voice boomed across the valley, echoing off the cliffs as I emerged from our hiding place, my daughter cradled safely in my arms. "You're fucking doomed." Hudson's expression twisted into a mix of surprise, anger and confusion as he saw me. The reality of what was happening then hit him as he saw my warrior wolves jumping out of the shadows and rushing out towards he and his guards. It took a lot of fighting and the loss of some of my warriors but we were finally able to bring down all of Hudson's wolves and also subdue him. As they chained him too, I walked over to him, holding my daughter close to my chest."Hudson," I said, my voice filled with disappointment as I stared at him. "All the while you showed me evil, I trusted you like a brother. Only to have you betray me by attacking me and kidnapping my daughter." Hudson didn't give me a reply as he glared at me with rage in his eyes. I could see that he had no
Ryder's POV"I.. I actually am happy that you've finally coke back to me," Aria said as she smiled for the first time since our son's adoption. I still marveled at how perfect her teeth were. "And I am happier that you took my back," I replied, extending my hands to her. As I caressed it, I stared into her eyes and smiled. "I really, really am happy." The entire room seemed to be light up as Aria softly laughed. It was a sound I so much missed.Suddenly, her smile dissipated, a slight frown replacing it. I squeezed her hands softly and scooted closer to her. I didn't need anyone to tell me why her mood had changed. "Do not worry, Aria. I would comb the breadth and depth..." I was cut short by a loud knock on the door. Laying kisses on her forehead, I got up from.the bed and walked to the door. "Who is it?" I asked, a hint of frustration in my voice as I placed my hands on the doorknob. "It's Harold, Prince Ryder," came a familiar voice. I grunted and opened the door to see who it w
Desiree's POVI quickly collected the horse from Jason, ignoring the questions he was asking me. Quickly, I mounted the horse and whipped the reins, causing it to sprint out of the compound. I quickly turned my horse down the path that I knew led to the small shed Hudson had gone to. I kept on whipping my horse, not wanting to waste any time. I needed to get there fast if I really wanted my plans to work.It didn't take too long for me as I finally took notice of a familiar row of sunflower along the pathway I rode. It has been planted a year earlier by some servants as instructed by Hudson. It had started drizzling, but the ray of sunshine remained firm and colourful. I recalled the stores told to me when I was little that when such was happening, it meant the moon goddess was punishing a pack for sins that they had committed towards her. I didn't believe sigh anymore. I finally reached the small gate leading to the shed and saw a guard standing by it. He sighted me and quickly wi
Desiree's POVMy heart raced as I rushed through the compound gate. I needed to inform Ryder about my findings.I quickly surveyed the surrounding path, and after seeing no one, I moved towards the palace. I had not notified anyone about me leaving that mansion and I knew if Hudson was to learn about that, he would be suspicious of me. I didn't want to drag any attention to me so I reduced my pace, walking stealthily into the mansion. It wasn't until I overheard a maidservants telling the other that Hudson had ridden to his shed in the woods that I finally relaxed. As I walked, I thought of what would happen once I told Ryder the good news I held for him. I wasn't too concerned about what he would do though. I was much more concerned about what Aria would do. She had promised me that she would pack and leave the moment her stupid child was found and that was what I expected from her. If she did, I'd finally have Ryder to myself. Upon arriving at the palace, I received the referenc
Desiree's POV"We were ambushed and... they kidnapped my daughter," Ryder explained to me, his voice cracking a bit. I could hear from his tone that he was pained and angered by what had happened to he and Aria. Why wasn't he thinking about me? Aria and Ryder had arrived not up to an hour ago and Aria had retreated to her room to cry her eyes out. Ryder had decided to come to his study to think and luckily, I was waiting for him. His conversation though was not one I was expecting to be having with him. "Do you know who took her?" I asked, pretending to be concerned, even though deep down, I was filled with anger. "Was there any clue left behind by the wolves that may lead us to her?" "I... I don't know," Ryder admitted, frustration evident in his voice. He grunted and ran a hand through his hair as he shook his head. He looked down at the drink I had brought for him and I could see in his eyes that he wanted to take it. "But... but I have to find her. I lost Aria once. I can't be
Ryder's POV We had long begun our journey in silence, the only sound filling the air being the sound of our horse's hooves trotting softly against grass and the racket our carriage wheels made as it made it's way through the forest. The children too added to the list as they played and laughed loudly. Apart from all these, the carriage seemed silent. My gaze turned to Aria, a sense of guilt filling up within me as I stared at her. She had turned to the window and was staring at the passing trees. It was obvious that her mind was somewhere else and I wondered what it was that she was thinking about. Was it me? Was she having regrets?I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out. I just didn't know what to say. Taking in a deep breath, I turned from her and began tapping my feet on the floor restlessly, trying my best to muster my courage."What is it?" I heard her say and I quickly turned to her. Her gaze had not left the window."Look, Aria, I'm... I'm really, really sorry," I sa
Ryder's POVThe morning came as quickly as the night went by and the rays of sun did more than wake me up, it also brought back bad memories. Memories of how I had treated Aria when all she had ever done was care for me, memories of how I should have heard her out a bit more, or protected her regardless of not knowing the origin of her pregnancy. I was nothing without her and her leaving ended up being undoubtedly detrimental to me. How did i not see that until now? But then, i probably did and decided on being more in denial. Due to the fact that it was already late yesterday, Alpha Kael had asked that I slept in before leaving with Aria. It wasn't something I wanted as it itched me to take Aria back home but I couldn't say nom He had taken me to my room, insisting that I don't sleep with Aria. I couldn't blame him. He was her father after all.I slowly sat up from bed, my right hand travellimg to my eyes as I began rubbing them to get them free from the haziness that had ensued th
Hudson's POVI walked out of the mansion and turned towards the path that led to the stable at the back. Sure enough, I found Jason there, attending to the horses inside. He was so focused on what he was doing that he didn't notice my presence.I made to enter the stable but then stopped as I sighted a a clump of horse dung at the front. I looked down at the ground and saw that there were a lot surrounding the area. I wasn't sure I wanted to have my shoes get stained with any. Taking a step back from the stable door, I called out to Jason from outside. "Jason," I shouted as I shoved my hands into the pockets of my jean trousers. "Jason," I called out again after seeing that he had not heard my first call.Jason looked up, startled, and turned to the cabin door. He sighted me standing outside and immediately wipes his dirty hands on his jeans before walking slowly to the barn door. "Alpha Hudson," he said as he bowed his head low. "Is there any problem, alpha?" I gave Jason a small n
Aria's POVRyder stared at me for a few moments before rushing towards me. I dropped my kids to the ground in fear, thinking he was going to attack me but, to my greatest surprise, he enveloped me in a tight hug the moment he reached me. I didn't know what to do so I just stood there motionless as he began whispering words of apology. "I'm sorry, Aria," he whispered as he placed his head on my blossom. "I really really am so sorry." I didn't know what to say or do at that moment. What was he sorry about? And what was he even doing here in the first place? I heard the shuffling of feet behind me and turned slightly to see my father stand from his throne and begin to walk towards I and Ryder. He was confused but had not reacted to Ryder's sudden hug. I assumed it was because I wasn't protesting that he kept cool. "What is happening here?" he asked with a frown on his face as he paused at the last step of the podium on which his throne sat. "Prince Ryder," he called out to Ryder and I
