Chapter 34 - Caleb

Sweat breaks out on my forehead as I try to maintain my maintain the paralysis grip on Star so that Mikela can work the shifting spell on her.

“Hold her,” Mikela grits out.

“I’m trying! She’s fighting it!” I grind out through clenched teeth. To Star, I say, “Please, Star. We just want to help you. I promise. But I need you to shift. I need to make sure that the drugs in your system aren’t causing your human form harm. You’ve been going through detox and that’s also going to be hard as a human. We need to know who you are to help you.”

She gives what I think is meant to be a snarl, but only comes out as a whimper.

“Just do the shift!” I yell to Mikela.

“I’m trying!” Mikela yells back.

After a few more tense seconds, I feel the bones beneath Star’s body start to shift and the popping of muscle and sinew fills the air.

Her shift starts off agonizingly slow as she still tries to fight off Mikela. B
