To say I was surprised by the proposal would be an understatement.
I knew that a lot of guys at the university had a crush on me, but I never expected one of those guys to be Nate. He was the sweet and silent type, always keeping to himself. He had chestnut coloured hair, golden brown eyes, and some light freckles. His facial features were on the softer side and he had lean muscle–the type of body a woman could really wrap herself around, and clung onto. More importantly than his soft curls and cute demeanor was that, unlike most guys at this school, he wasn’t interested in becoming pack leader.
I was tired of those douche bag guys. It was about time I dated someone sweet and kind, like Nate. The more book-smart, nerdy type, rather than the brawny men I usually dated. Natalie did like Nate, once upon a time, but recently Devon had filled out. It was like overnight he’d doubled in size and body muscle. He had darker hair, wasn’t quite as tanned, and his eyes were darker too. He was more of a stereotypical alpha wolf type, which was why I had overlooked him, but Natalie hadn’t overlooked him. At least not recently when she’d seen a photo of him in his swimsuit. Apparently, the boy was packing.
Big dicks and muscles didn’t interest me. Not anymore. I wanted to connect with someone on a deeper level. Maybe it was because it was almost time to mate, so I had to think about that sort of stuff. As a lycan woman, my body made me think about that sort of stuff. Pack alphas travel a lot, they’re always busy with work. They also often fucked around or had mulitple mates–it was something only the alpha could do…breed and connect with more than one woman, but someone like Nate–who would never make alpha–would be able to give me the time, dedication, and commitment I deserved.
“I can’t believe Devon likes me,” Natalie whispered as we packed up after class. She kept staring back at them, as did I. “I didn’t think he noticed girls like me. Alpha contenders usually go for chicks like, well, you.”
I wouldn’t say it out loud, but she was right. When we got the note and Nate pointed toward me, we were both a little shocked, but it had worked out perfectly.
Me with Nate.
Natalie with Devon.
“You have a lot to offer,” I said. “Besides, many guys like more submissive women.” This was also true. Often alpha-contender-types like Devon liked to prey upon smaller, more mousy type wolf girls. The kind they could dominate easier.
And that certainly wouldn’t be me. I liked to be the one in control.
Once we had our things, we made our way outside into the hall, only to be stopped by Nate of all people. He was a little out of breath, which made me smile. Devon sauntered behind him, his bag half open, like they’d chased after us.
“So,” he panted, “tonight? Around 7?”
“I don’t think there’s any good movies playing in the cinema tonight,” I said, “but…you two are dorm mates, right?” My gaze moved in between them and then I touched Nate’s arm, in a flirtatious kind of way–lightly circling my fingers against his too-soft-for-a-guy skin. “We could come by yours after dinner and put something on? Maybe stay the night?”
He swallowed visibly and dropped his arm away from my hold.
Okay, clearly he was playing hard to get. Or shy.
I loved a shy boy.
Nate looked back at Devon, who was looking at Natalie with his eyebrows tugged together, and then he nodded at Nate, but he almost seemed…confused. I also looked at Natalie, who was twirling her hair around her finger and smiling at Devon.
“Uh,” said Nate. “Yeah, sure. It’s a date.”
The guys walked off in the opposite direction, likely going to their next class, but they kept staring back at us and talking to each other. I still couldn’t shake the feeling that they seemed confused about something. Or maybe nervous? I wasn’t sure.
“Ohhh mmmm geeeee!” said Natalie. “I can’t believe I’m going on a date with the hottest guy in the university!”
I looked back to stare at them, but they’d already rounded the corner. I pursed my lips and looked back at Natalie. “I don’t think he’s the hottest, or at least he wasn’t until recently when he bulked up overnight.” That happened sometimes when men were close to the mating ritual, they had drastic changes in their body–the women too. My breasts had gone from B cups to Ds overnight. It was like a werewolf's second puberty and happened very fast.
“He’s definitely the hottest now, almost every shewolf on campus thinks so,” said Natalie.
Before Devon’s drastic body change, which apparently was releasing some sort of pheromone in the air, the hottest guy on campus was my ex boyfriend, Rule. Technically his name was Rulio, but everyone called him Rule. He was buff, with dark skin, and dark, bedroom eyes, but he was also a player. A fuckboy. The worst kind around campus. I’d tried with him, over and over, giving him so many chances, but he always ended up cheating with some wolf girl from another university at a keg party and hoping I wouldn’t find out.
Of course, I always did, and eventually I swore that no matter how hot he or any man was, I wouldn’t date anyone based on their looks. Not anymore. And that’s why Nate was perfect. Unfortunately for me, Rule was in my next class.
Animalistic Behavior & Watch Training
Or ABWT. It was one of the more boring classes on campus, but something we all had to take. It trained us about the other supernatural creatures in this world because, unfortunately for us, we weren’t alone. It was unfortunate because we didn’t have any alliances with other supernatural creatures, and some were super strong and constantly pissed off, like the vampyres.
I’d never met one, but apparently outside the protective walls of this university, they were lurking everywhere. Waiting and hungry for our blood. Werewolf blood was like crack to vampyres, juicing them up and giving them some sort of adrenaline high. I didn’t understand it, but that was why it was so important that every graduating year chose a strong leader–an alpha to keep everyone safe and guide their pack–everyone within their age group. Whether I liked it or not, I was stuck with these people around me forever, even my ex-boyfriend.
“Hey,” he said as I entered the class.
I rolled my eyes and flipped him off, sitting behind him. Another unfortunate thing about this class was the assigned seating, which meant an hour staring at the back of his dumb head.
Rule turned around to face me. “Oh come on, Ame, you aren’t still pissed about that party, are you? It was like 3 months ago.”
“It’s Amelia,” I growled. “And you mean the keg party where you slept with not one but two chicks from over at DLC?” I stared. “Yeah. I’m still pissed.”
“We were on a break!” he said.
“No, we weren’t!” I said back, a little too loudly. A few people turned to look. Luckily the teacher wasn’t here yet. Apparently they were running late.
“Well, shit. I thought we were…. It was a misunderstanding, babe. Come on.”
“I’m not coming anywhere,” I told him. “Especially not anywhere near your stank ass.”
He rolled his eyes. “You’ll miss me. I know you will. No one eats pussy like I do.”
“Only because you’ve had so much practice!” I yelled. “Besides, I’m over you. I’m seeing someone else now and he can practice on me as much as he wants!”
Rule’s expression darkened–eyes turning to slits, mouth pursed. “Who are you seeing?”
Maybe he’d always slept around, but I’d always been his for the most part, so he tended to get super jealous whenever someone else touched me. But that was his problem. Not mine. He’d made his bed years ago when he first started cheating on me.
“Nate,” I told him, folding my arms.
“Nate?!” he repeated with a snort. “That little pussy boy?”
“Yeah!” I replied. “And he’s twice the man you’ll ever be!”
Rule must’ve been gripping his pen hard because it snapped, making red ink fly out everywhere over the table. The teacher entered the room, oblivious to what was happening as they prepared their lesson plan and Rule stared at me with a look of sheer blood fury in his eyes.
“He’s a dead man,” he told me. “Let’s see how much more of a man he is compared to me, or how much you like him when he’s dead.”
I rolled my eyes and Rule turned back around. He talked a big game, but he never really did anything about it, so I wasn’t worried. Unlike Nat who had overheard and stood behind me. She leaned in closer to me and whispered, “Maybe you shouldn’t have told him that? You know all the guys get mad testosterone before the mating ritual. He might actually kill him.”
“He’s all bark and no bite,” I replied, starting to copy notes from the board. “I’m not worried. Besides, Nate’s smart. He can handle himself.”
“Oh man, I walked on gum,” Nate complained as we walked into the History of Werewolfism. It was one of the more boring classes at Lycan University. It didn’t help that the teacher was really yawnsome. Nate was dragging his foot on the floor as I tried to find a free chair for us. Putting this class at the end of the day was almost cruel. My brain hurt. I found a place at the back, near the old bunsen burners–for whatever reason, likely fund cuts, this class was held in the science room. “Hey, did Amelia seem…I don’t know…flirty to you?” “No, not at all,” said Nate as he sat down. “I mean flirty with you,” I told him, “not me. She certainly wasn’t with me.” “Oh then in that case, yes.” Nate was still trying to scrape the gum from his shoe, only now he used a ruler. “Isn’t that weird?” I asked. “I mean she agrees to go on a date with me, and Nat with you, but she flirts with you in front of me and Nat? I also think Nat was making eyes at me.”
I’d dreamed of this moment. Literally. I’d had this exact dream–of us kissing like that, moving back onto the lounge and dry humping like we did, but I realized now that I’d pushed too far. It was obvious on Devon’s too red face. He felt uncomfortable. Confused. It only made me feel all the more bad that my pants were tented in the front. I was throbbing and his face made me think he regretted it, which made me feel even more horrible that I didn’t. In fact, it was the best kiss I’d ever had in my life and definitely going into the spank bank. I didn’t know how a peck on the lips had escalated so much, but it was like from the moment he touched me I couldn’t pull away. It was like electricity. I had kissed girls before, but never a guy. It was so much better than women, though that might’ve strictly been because it was him. The feel of his hot mouth against mine was branded into my mind. My lips still tingled, my body still ached, and it was really hard to focus o
The movie night progressed as I assumed it would. Horribly. I suppose to wipe away the earlier confusion about who was dating whom, we sat Amelia, Devon, me, and then Natalie. And you’d think that would make me feel better, but it really didn’t. It was a small couch. And the more his knee brushed against mine, the more I remembered the fact that his hand was in Amelia’s right now. It didn’t help that the movie was a horror and Natalie was clinging to me. I just wanted this nightmare to end already. Just when I was about to get up to get more popcorn, Devon nudged me, and gave me a discreet look that said, ‘make a move,’ so it wouldn’t be so weird if he did. At least that was my guess. But it was weird. We were sitting on the exact spot me and him dry humped only a few hours ago and he was acting like it was nothing…. Granted, that kind of made me want to make a move, so with my arm closest to Natalie, I did that lame fake yawn and placed my arm behin
By the next morning, I was still in disbelief the date had actually happened. For the most of the night, I laid in my bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep, especially considering that Nate was actually in my room. Even if we didn’t do anything, it felt surreal to be this close with him..The entire walk to my dorm, there was only one thing on my mind–my brother. Siblings were the last thing you should be thinking about on a date, but I couldn’t help it. I was terrified that my brother was going to make things awkward as we arrived. And not because I was on a date with a guy, but because my brother might hit on him, too.And that he did.The moment Nate and I stepped into the dorm and his eyes set on us, he gave one of his typical lines. It wasn’t until I leered at him and signaled for him to go that he finally grabbed his backpack that he slung over his shoulder.“Yeah, no,” Harris stated, heading for the door. “Listen, it’s nice to meet you… I’m sure you’re a nice guy and
My entire body boiled the moment my eyes set on him. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what Amelia saw in that guy. I mean, the guy looked like such a dweeb. He radiated omega energy. He stunk of weakness. What girl would want to be mated to someone like that? I, for once, certainly did expect more from Amelia. If she dated someone knew, I at least expected it to be someone of my own caliber.Had I not seen it with my own two eyes after my friends told me that she was going to go out on a date with him, there was no way I would have believed it. Amelia caught me off guard in that department, but I told myself she just didn’t know what was best for her yet. Thankfully, I did, and I was going to make sure she was on the same page with me.“You got some balls showing up here, don’t you, omega?” I growled as I approached him, feeling my entire body burn as I got closer. I could barely see from the rage that filled my veins, while Nate looked genuinely confused as he held his coff
I was furious. Beyond furious.Where did Amelia’s ex-boyfriend get off on hurting Nate like that?Better yet, why did he even hurt Nate like that?I didn’t know and I didn’t care. My blood was pounding inside my veins; hands shaking and, though it scared me, I knew I meant what I said. If he dared to touch Nate again, I would kill him. I didn’t even think I’d have a say about it, really. It was like something primal and animalistic started to take over my body. I didn’t shift, but the urge was there. This happened a lot before the mating ritual–guys pairing off and competing for mates and, eventually, the title of alpha, and to be honest, even though I didn’t expect Nate to be involved, I was anticipating that someday Amelia’s ex and I would compete for the title of Head Wolf.“Are you okay?” That voice belonged to some other blonde dude who stepped in. I didn’t know him, nor did I appreciate the way he was eyeing Nate’s wounds.“Who the hell are you?” I growled.“Uh,” the guy smiled
Devon was right. By the time the Winter Ball came, my wound hadn’t quite made the transition from gorey to sexy just yet. It was still puffy around my eye and bruised in several places, some of which didn’t even make sense given that he’d hit me directly in the nose. Somehow, both my eyes had ended up black underneath, like he’d decked both my eyes out. Either way, it was horrific and not sexy or hot whatsoever, which didn’t matter considering the person I wanted to go with was going with someone else. Devon cleaned up nice. He looked handsome with his dark hair styled backward and neat for once; along with the tailored suit he’d rented, and the cologne he wore which was making my wolf near animalistic. I felt feral for him, not that I could show it. I kept thinking about the other day when Rule had attacked me and how quickly Devon had come to my rescue. Sure, Harris had too, but Harris was like a puppy compared to Dev’s wolf. He’d gotten so protective and growly
After dancing for a while, we met back at the table. Natalie didn’t seem to notice how her brother and I were dancing, but still, she seemed quiet. Eventually, Amelia and Devon joined us. Devon had, apparently, snuck a flask into the ball and was drinking it. Amelia too. I should have figured by how they were acting. I wanted to take it away from him, but I knew he’d only react negatively if I did, and he was having a good time…even if he seemed kind of hammered. So, instead of taking the alcohol away, we all agreed to leave early. I helped Devon get back to our room, where he kicked me out so he could be with Amelia alone, and then I went back to Natalie’s considering I wouldn’t have anywhere else to sleep with those drunkards likely fooling around all night. It was clear that something was going to happen between them and it bothered me, but even sober I was fairly sure something was going to happen tonight - at least judging by what they texted to each other an
Devon was pissed. Beyond pissed. I didn’t know what to do about it. I hated the thought of him being angry with me, but I couldn’t undo what I did. I also couldn’t explain that the only reason I’d done it–as little sense that it made–was because I was upset about him and Amelia. I also definitely couldn’t tell him that I was thinking of him the entire time. Either way, I’d texted Harris that it was a mistake and that we couldn’t see each other anymore. He was nice, which didn’t surprise me. As was Natalie. I’d told her the truth–that I didn’t like her and that I’d hooked up with her brother. I also asked her not to tell anyone, even though there were some serious rumors circulating the school after everything that happened in the hall with the screaming match with Devon. Thankfully, this school was really bad at Chinese whispers, so it had gone from me possibly being gay and fucking some dude to me possibly being into vampyres and running off to secretly marry one. Fuck. That was the first coherent thought I had when I woke up. Amelia was beside me, completely naked, and I was completely naked…. And last night at the dance, including after the dance, was somewhat of a blur, but I was pretty sure we had sex. Unprotected sex. A few times. Worse yet, my head was hammering…. Hangovers were the worst. “Morning,” said Amelia, kissing my shoulder. “Morning,” I replied with a half smile. “Do you, uh…remember….” “You don’t?” she laughed. “You were great, don’t worry.” That wasn’t the part I was concerned about. “Did we, uh….” “Have sex?” she asked. That much was obvious. The entire room smelled of sweat and cum. “No, I mean…. I kind of remember that part.” “Kind of?!” She playfully slapped my arm. “I should be offended.” “No, no, you were great too…. I was just wasted.” “Oh, I was going to remind you,” she purred. “By all means, you can do that,” I replied. “I just mean, uh, we
