On my way through town, I stop at The Saratoga Café and Diner and grab a bite to eat. The minute I walk in, the aromas captivate my senses, and it makes me feel so hungry I could eat a horse. I catch the eye of the waitress as she directs me to the booth nearest the kitchen and that makes things worse.
Now I am almost doubling over when my stomach cramps up from hunger pains and I realize that I haven’t eaten in three days. She stares down at me after I take a seat and asks, “What would you like today? Do you need a few minutes to look over the menu?” After she hands me one.
“Yes please. I am not from here and I don’t know what you serve. May I ask what the special is today first?” I glance up at her strawberry blonde curls and when I start to walk down her body with my eyes, I admire the way the curve of her butt fits her uniform.
She looks down at a piece of paper folded up in her hand and once she unfolds it, she r
Sitting in my room, I stare out the window at the picturesque scene. Between the beautiful Mount Mansfield, or the dense forests of Smuggler’s Notch State Park, this place is quite an eye full. Everywhere I look, I see trees and a mountain scene to die for. Maybe that is why she has come here so many times in the last 6 years. I have researched this place over and over, but the last time she had been here before now was 4 years ago. So why now? I wonder as I sit here enjoying the serene mountain scape. Thing is, I don’t have a clue why she would be here. It is a small town like the other ones, but it is booming and not quiet at all like the rest. I have noticed one thing about her, she doesn’t like big cities usually. Not knowing why, I can only guess, but at this moment I am too busy relaxing and caring less honestly. When I hear a knock at the door, I freeze in place. Hoping that whoever it is will
As I walk through the Minuteman National Historic Park, I start to feel like I have been transported through time and place to when the Revolution was in full swing. Then I swing by Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House and feel like I stepped into Little Women. I remember having to read it in middle school and we had to learn all about the setting of this little place. Once I took a tour of a few more historic places, I start to feel like I should be watching my back. I don’t know if it was in my head or if she can make herself only visible to me, but when she stepped right up to me in public, I nearly pulled my knife out of my waist band and went after her in broad daylight. Now I know that this wouldn’t have been the most intelligent thing I have ever done, but it was purely instinct. Fighting it, I watch as she touches a woman’s shoulder in front of me and the older woman turns to her before asking, “Do I know you?” The Soul Eater shak
“Beep” “Beep” “Beep” “Beep” I struggle to open my eyes and when I do, the sun’s glare from the snow hits them and I become temporarily blind. Feeling for my phone so I can shut off the alarm, I feel the edge just before I hear it drop on the hard wood floor and pray that it hasn’t broken. “Great. Just my luck.” Opening my eyes, I see the old Ferris wheel and the old-fashioned carousel just outside my window over by the Old Orchard Beach Pier. It’s winter in Old Orchard Beach, and nothing is open this time of year except for a handful of shops and small restaurants. When I made a few phone calls last week on my way around the New England states, I found out that she was seen here within the last 2 weeks which means she may still be in the area. Remembering growing up and reading several of my favorite horror author’s novels, I recall that Maine was always a hot spot for the paranormal. I don’t know if
Driving into a college town, feels a little bit like a small town with a lot of congestion. You wouldn’t think there would be so many people up and down the streets because of just how few houses there are, but instead you see floods of people walking everywhere. When you go down the back streets, masses of college age children are partying, and it feels like pandemonium. Still trying to wrap my head around the fact that she called me up just so she could tantalize me with this detail, I watch everyone closely to see if I notice anything odd. However, there is one thing I have noticed about this town, it is ordinary. Every house looks plain, there aren’t any distinguishable features that would make me feel like this is a strange place. I pull over before almost hitting someone, because I catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye. Merely a flash, but it’s at least something. Feeling a sudden collision with the f
As I sit in my car in Jud, North Dakota looking over my phone’s map app, I wonder how I found this little strip of heaven. Every where I turn, I see murals that are vibrant and have different things painted all over them. Now a man can admire a work of art without being called a pansy, I might add. Deciding to stay for a little while, I pull out onto the intersection and notice a diner on the corner before the next stop sign. I realize that it has been days since I have eaten anything or maybe more, so I drive into the parking lot and climb out of my beat-up old Chevy truck. Yes, this time I didn’t steal one. I saw it on the side of the road a couple months back and bought it straight out with cash from an old man with no teeth and his wrinkled old lady out in the country. Getting out of the car, I open the door and hear the squeal of the frame, it reminds me that I must get some WD-40. The old man had said that it has seen better
After getting a great night’s sleep, I open my eyes and feel like I could do just about anything. Hell, I don’t even feel out of sorts this morning. The only thing that I notice out of place is the fact that when I slept, I didn’t have a single dream or nightmare. That has never happened as far as I remember. Laying there for a few minutes longer, I listen to my housemates slowly get up and go downstairs for breakfast. After a couple of minutes, I decide to get up. When I climb out of bed, the aroma of biscuits and gravy hits me first, then the sweetness of the maple cured bacon. Instantly, I want to hurry up and get changed so I can go downstairs and find out if it all tastes as good as it smells. Noticing, that the cold floor stings on the bottom of my feet as soon as I set them down, I rush to grab my socks and shoes before I turn around and see it. Suddenly, I forget about everything else and freeze. I walk ov
Sitting on the cold, hardwood floor, I stare at my nephew’s half rotted corpse as the smell fills my nostrils and makes my stomach churn. The ironic thing about all this, is that now the enticing aromas from downstairs, mix with the pungent odor from his rotting corpse and make the bile in my stomach fill my mouth. I start to gag, but I don’t care and still sit there staring because his body is in remarkably good condition for one that has been rotting for almost a year. Hearing a knock at the door, I casually glance over at it before returning my gaze to his almost mummified body slumped over. Just as I shake my head, I hear it again, but the noise is muffled and sounds like I am underwater. I can only assume that I am in shock, because when Sharon opens the door and walks in, I freeze. Knowing that if she finds the body, I am toast, I try to move but find that I am stuck in place. “What is going on?” I say quietly, so she d
After a good night’s sleep, I look around this strange little town. It reminds me of Holland for some reason with its windmills and tulips everywhere. However, when I see all the tourists walking about, I know why they are attracted to this place. At one point in time last night, I dozed off and started to swerve off the road, almost hitting someone walking on my way into town. The pedestrian on closer inspection bared a striking resemblance to “her” with that blazing red hair, and pale skin, from what I could see while passing. Out of sheer luck, I found the little motel just past where I turned off and they had a room open. When I woke up this morning, I received a mysterious phone call from someone named Jim. It was odd in two ways, for one thing I have not given this phone number out to anyone. Matter of fact, I only picked up this phone last month so I could do my searches portably and then if I had to call anyone, they
Hearing a sound in the early morning, I scan the room to find her sitting there staring at me. My migraine is gone, and the crows have stopped cawing, but that stench. It needs to go away, before I hurl onto the covers.Whenever, I have caught a scent of her lately, it is so rancid that it smells ten thousand times worse than a dumpster full of rotten seafood. I should know, because one time I did a stint at a local lobster manufacturing facility in Maine for a few months, while waiting for her to show her precious face around. Eventually, she did and then I pounced on her like a cat playing with his mouse. The only problem at that time was there were too many people around to get hurt. I ended up having to give up my pursuit of “her” before my coworkers found out. Then of course, it was too late to find her anymore.Peering into the darkness, I strain my eyes and then see a faint glow in the shadows.&n
The deeper I go, the denser the foliage around me and the harder it is to stay upright. I fight with the fallen branches on the ground while tripping and occasionally falling, as the moon shines bright over the tree line. The only problem with this, is the fact that the tree line is so thick. There are hardly any streams of light filtering through the canopy at the floor level. When I see a flicker of her hair in the breeze, I watch till I see it again finally a few minutes later. Rushing after her, I almost fall face first over a ridge and to my death into the depths down below. It’s at least 200 feet straight down, and now I must figure out a way around it.Scanning the area, I find a place where it finally closes, and I can walk across. It’s a about a mile down from my original position, so I am not quite sure that I will even find her again once I am across it. Still, I take the chance and keep going.Whe
Waking up in the middle of the night, I hear a noise from the corner and when I see her fangs protrude from her mouth, I know that it is none other than “The Soul Eater” herself. I bolt up in bed with wide eyes and struggle to free myself from the covers, that have wrapped themselves around my ankles so tightly that I can’t get out of them. When she stands up from her crouching position, I note that she is not in her human form this time, but rather in a demon form or something akin to it. Her “True” form, I am pretty sure.Strands of spit run down her fangs and onto the floor, where the moonlight shines on it and reflects off into the dark. I hear her tell tale cackle and then her hiss before she moves slowly towards me and I finally free my feet. Quickly reaching for my knife in its sheath, I touch the tip right before she manages to get to my leg and grasp it with her razor-sharp claws. Knowing that ri
Three days later with no sign of “her”, I decide to head out of town and find a place where I can hold up for a little while, till I catch her again. The organization has been all over town tracking me down, and several times I almost ran into them. Today, was the last time and a very close call. It was at the gas station, as I went to fill up the truck before going back to Ms. Flannigan’s house. When Marion spotted me, I was in the middle of filling my tank and had just paid, or I would have had the cops after me too. A chase ensued as I drove all the way out of town and hid in a parking garage for a while, till I figured the coast was clear. Afterwards, I drove back into town and then I headed back to Ms. Flannigan’s place. Not knowing where I want to go next, I flip a coin and decide to head west for a bit, because she always ends up there at some point in time. She tends to either favor old ghost towns or
After 6 months of laying low, I have found myself staying in a flat in San Francisco. My favorite thing to do as of late is ride the trolleys from work and then back home. The people here are all so friendly and the best part is, I haven’t seen hide nor tale of “her” anywhere in my searches on the internet. The thing is, honestly, I kind of miss “her” and our game. The one thing I am glad about though is that she has stopped stealing people’s souls and killing others for fun. I happen to know that she doesn’t need to eat for sustenance, and it really makes me disgusted to know that she does it just because she can.Unfortunately, I just checked my computer after work tonight and I see something that disturbs me. Reminding me of the days when I used to have to hunt her down and was always a step behind, I see a report of a woman with bright red hair attacking someone on a dark road. &ldq
While sitting in the back of the car and drinking my vodka on ice, I listen to the two of them upfront talk. The driver refers to a man as “Mr. Thomas” when he says quietly, “Mr. Thomas told me that I can’t divulge anything besides when we are supposed to be there.Marion states rather happily with satisfaction in his voice, “Well, they just told me to get him in the car no matter what. I just had to stop short of killing him and making it so he can’t talk, but anything else was up to my discretion.” His voice fades off as he remembers I am sitting behind them.Staring at me, he smiles a strange sort of smile that gives me chills, till he turns around and stares out the window. As I watch the two of them, it kind of reminds me of Laurel and Hardy, a famous comedian act from the early Hollywood era. They were famous because they were complete opposites. One being so huge and the other sk
Hearing a gun shot, I bolt up in bed faster than I ever thought possible and then grab my knife from my pants pocket. I hide in the corner by the closet, because I have a nasty feeling that they are coming for me. The Luminous group must have tracked me down and I am about to have to deal with them. When the door flies off it’s hinges violently, I realize that someone just kicked it a good one. Someone big and really strong. While it flies across the room, I watch it out of the corner of my eye as it lands on the bed between me and the place where the door once stood. A shadow looms through the opening and then I see a hulking man slowly walk in, before staring directly at me with red tinged eyes. Not knowing what to do, I stand there waiting to see what he will do next. I know damn well, that if I attack and gauge it wrong, I will be on the bed with the door and possibly worse. Perhaps, I won’t make it out of here,
Shaking my head, I go back up to my room after eating, but something seems to be bothering me. No matter what I do, I can’t seem to get comfortable in bed and when I turn over, a crazy thought pops in my head. Wondering if she is responsible for the man’s disappearance, I decide that I must do some investigating further or I will never get to rest. After I open my eyes, I lie here staring at the ceiling for a few minutes while feeling wide awake. “Should I just get it over with and go after her? Or should I wait and see what happens tomorrow?” I ask myself as an afterthought when sighing and throwing the covers off.I sit up and rub my arms while trying to warm my skin, but it is a bit cold in my room and the heat doesn’t seem to be working all that well. So, when I put my feet on the wood floor, I flinch and recoil them back up under the covers, for the moment. Hearing a noise in the corner of the
After that long ordeal, I head west to Las Vegas. Not only have I always wanted to visit there, but I heard on the radio that there was a strange report stemming from there, of a woman with red hair who mysteriously killed a five-year-old. “She does like her little children.” I murmur under my breath before pulling in the gas station to fill up.I gaze into the rearview mirror before I climb out of the truck and sigh because I really need a shave and a shower. Matter of fact, now that I think about it, I can’t remember the last time I have had one. Surely, I must be smelling pretty rank about now.As I stroll up to the little station, I look up at the sign above the door and it says, “Marathon, get food and gas here.” I can’t help but to laugh at that before I enter and see an older woman in her 50’s, with dark brown hair and a really pale complexion, standing at the counter just reading a newspape
