ALISHA POV

I clenched my fists in frustration. Damnit. The one piece of information I needed, and it was interrupted by a phone call.

I glanced at Richard, who looked just as annoyed as I felt. He shook his head and muttered under his breath, “Unbelievable.”

My thoughts were racing. If the date was close, I needed to act fast. Nadia’s plan to use me as a spy was already risky, but now I was beginning to think I might need to take matters into my own hands.

As Mrs. Garrison continued her phone conversation, I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. I had to stay focused, had to keep playing my part. But inside, I couldn’t help but feel like time was slipping away, and the stakes were higher than ever.

RICHARD POV

"Richard," my mother called sharply, her voice cutting through the tension that hung in the room like a storm cloud.

She motioned for me to follow her after making a few minutes' call, her manicured finger beckoning me toward the far corner of the sitting room.

Her eyes darted toward Alisha, who sat quietly on the sofa, her fingers fiddling with the hem of her bandaged arm. I hesitated for a moment, glancing back at Alisha, but my mother’s expression left no room for argument.

"Come here. Now," she demanded, her voice low but firm.

I followed her to the corner, my steps heavy, knowing exactly where this conversation was headed. My mother crossed her arms, her lips pressed into a thin line as she glanced over her shoulder to ensure Alisha couldn’t hear us.

"Who the hell is that girl, Richard?" she hissed, her eyes narrowing as she tilted her head in Alisha's direction.

"And why on earth is she in my house? Don’t tell me you’ve gone mad enough to bring a stranger with bandages into our home."

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "Mom, calm down. I can explain."

"You better," she snapped. "Because right now, all I see is you dragging home a woman who looks like she just escaped from a hospital ward. And why is she even here? The hospital isn’t good enough for her?"

"It’s not like that," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"I ran into her this morning when a bunch of trees fell on my car screen…literally. She was in her car trying to maneuver around the corner of the expressway crossing the road, and I didn’t see her in time. It was an accident."

Her eyes widened in disbelief.

"So, let me get this straight. You hit her with your car, and your solution is to bring her here? What’s wrong with leaving her in the hospital?

You could’ve paid the nurses more to take care of her. That’s what hospitals are for, Richard, not our home."

I clenched my fists, struggling to stay calm.

"Mom, listen to me. The nurses said she lost her memory. She doesn’t even know who she is or where she’s from. They suggested treating her kindly, giving her a familiar environment to help her recover.

That’s why I brought her here. She didn’t want to stay in the hospital, and forcing her to do so would’ve made things worse."

My mother’s eyes narrowed further, her disapproval practically radiating off her.

"And what about the staff there? Are they suddenly incapable of being kind and doing their jobs? You don’t need to bring her into our lives, Richard. This is unnecessary and come to think of it, I don't even like her."

I exhaled slowly, my patience wearing thin.

"The doctors said her recovery depends on how she’s treated. She’s fragile right now, Mom. Every demand she makes, no matter how small, could be a step toward helping her remember who she is. I couldn’t just leave her there, scared and confused."

My mother’s expression didn’t soften. If anything, her frustration deepened.

"So, you’re saying you’ve made yourself responsible for her? A complete stranger? What if she’s lying, Richard? What if she’s playing some game, taking advantage of your kindness? Did you think about that?"

"I don’t think she’s lying," I replied firmly. "You didn’t see her, Mom. She was terrified, completely lost. I couldn’t turn my back on her."

Before my mother could respond, her eyes flickered to something behind me. Her lips pressed together tightly as she straightened her posture.

I turned my head slightly and saw Alisha walking toward us, her steps hesitant but deliberate.

"Richard," my mother whispered sharply, her tone laced with warning.

"She’s coming this way and why? Is she trying to eavesdrop on us? You see, I told you that I don't like that girl."

I nodded, already feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on me. Alisha’s presence, fragile and mysterious, seemed to cast a shadow over the conversation we weren’t ready to finish.

"Alisha, where do you think you’re going?" my mother’s voice snapped sharply as she stepped out of the corner where we’d been talking.

Her heels clicked against the tiled floor as she approached Alisha, who stopped in her tracks, looking startled.

"I... I wasn’t going anywhere," Alisha stammered, her voice soft and defensive.

"Don’t lie to me," my mother shot back, her eyes narrowing as she folded her arms across her chest. "You were heading this way, weren’t you? Trying to eavesdrop on my conversation with my son?"

Alisha’s cheeks flushed, and she shook her head quickly. "No, ma’am, I wasn’t! I wasn’t trying to listen to anything. I just thought..." She trailed off, glancing nervously at me for support.

"Mother, that’s enough," I cut in, stepping between the two women. My tone was firm, and I held my mother’s gaze, refusing to let her intimidate Alisha any further. "She wasn’t doing anything wrong. There’s no need to accuse her like that."

My mother’s lips pursed tightly, but she didn’t argue further. Instead, she turned to me, her expression softening just enough to remind me she was still my mother, though her disapproval lingered.

"Fine," she said curtly. "But don’t forget, Richard, you have an errand to run. Tammie’s bridal wear needs to be delivered today. You can’t keep putting it off."

I nodded, suppressing a sigh. "I haven’t forgotten."

"Good," she replied, her tone clipped. She glanced at Alisha one last time, her eyes cold and calculating, before addressing me again.

MAX POV.I froze, my body tensing as I adjusted the bouquet on my lap, pretending to be occupied. But my eyes stayed locked on the mirror, watching the faint shadow lingering just out of sight.“Max?” Nadia’s voice cut through my focus. “What is it?”“Shh,” I said sharply, raising a hand to silence her.I shifted slightly, angling the mirror to get a better view. The parking lot wasn’t crowded, but there were enough people milling about to mask a potential eavesdropper. The shadow was small and quick, disappearing as soon as it appeared.“Is someone there?” Nadia whispered, her tone laced with unease.“Maybe,” I muttered. “Stay quiet.”I leaned forward, peering through the windshield. Nothing seemed out of place…just a few shoppers heading to their cars, some loading groceries into trunks. But my instincts told me otherwise.I glanced at the other side mirror, scanning the opposite direction. Still nothing.“Nadia, stay in the car,” I said, my voice low but firm.“What are you going t

MAX POV.I ignored her, focusing instead on the road ahead. The cityscape blurred past us, but my mind was elsewhere, replaying the moments in the parking lot.The look in the mirror, the faint rustling sound…it had all been too real to dismiss as paranoia.“You’re awfully quiet,” Nadia remarked, her tone teasing. “What’s going on in that brilliant mind of yours?”“Nothing you need to worry about,” I said curtly. She pouted, but I didn’t give her the satisfaction of looking her way.The silence stretched between us, broken only by the hum of the car’s engine. Or perhaps someone closer to me than wants to know my every move? MR JACOB POV.“Think, Jacob,” I muttered to myself, my fingers drumming against the steering wheel. “Think.”Ahead, Max’s car took a left turn, and I followed, keeping my distance. The streets were more quiet now, the rush of traffic thinning as we moved toward the upscale neighborhood where Mr Kenneth’s mansion loomed like a fortress.I couldn’t help but sneer at the thought of it. That mansion was a symbol of everything Kenneth had stolen from me…wealth, power, respect. He lived like a king while I scraped by, forced to watch from the sidelines as he basked in the glory that should have been mine. The car in front of me slowed, and I did the same, my eyes narrowing as I watched Max navigate through the gated entrance to Kenneth’s estate.“This is it,” I murmured, pulling over to the side of the road just outside the gates. From this vantage point, I had a clear view of the driveway, where Max’s car came to a stop. "What could you possibly be doing that’s more important than keeping me updated?"I clenched my jaw, taking a deep breath before responding. "I was in the middle of dinner with Richard. I couldn’t exactly answer your call in front of him, could I?"Nadia’s tone softened slightly, but her impatience was still evident. "Fine. But you need to tell me what’s going on. Have you heard anything new about the wedding?"I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "No, Nadia. I haven’t heard anything else. And even if I had, do you really think I’d tell you in the middle of dinner?"There was a pause on the other end of the line, and I could almost hear her frustration. "You need to stay on top of this, Alisha," she said finally. "We can’t afford any mistakes.""I know," I replied, my voice clipped. "You don’t have to remin

But if you don’t want me to, I understand, and I won’t bring it up again."Richard stared at me for a moment, his expression unreadable. My heart pounded in my chest, though not from fear or nerves. This was the critical moment, the point where I’d see if he’d bend to my request. Finally, he sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Alisha," he said slowly, "why would you even want to come? It’s not exactly a public event."I smiled again, this time letting it tremble slightly. "I don’t know," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. Perhaps the pain from her injuries was slowing her down. But then another thought crept in, one I couldn’t shake. What if something’s wrong? The memory of the hospital flashed in my mind…her pale face, the nurses bustling around her, and the soft murmur of their voices as they instructed me on how to care for her.She needs rest and support, they had said. She’s lucky it wasn’t worse.Lucky. That word had stuck with me all day. She was lucky, wasn’t she? It could’ve been much worse. But now, sitting here, waiting for her, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was doing enough. Was she comfortable? Was she in pain? I cleared my throat, trying to sound calmer. “I’m just… just getting dressed.”There was a pause, and I could feel his presence lingering just beyond the door. “Dinner is ready,” he said after a moment. “You should come downstairs and eat something.”“Alright,” I replied, forcing a lightness into my tone. “I’ll be there in a bit.”“I’ll wait for you downstairs,” he said, and I could hear the faint sound of his footsteps retreating down the hallway.I didn’t move until I was sure he was gone. MR JACOB POV.The door creaked shut behind Max as he walked away, leaving me standing at the restroom entrance, completely stunned. My mind raced as I stared at the spot where he had just been. How could he possibly be fine? I had heard him coughing violently from inside. I had seen the blood…there was no mistaking it.I looked down at the faint red smear on the floor near the threshold of the restroom. That was real. I wasn’t imagining things. The blood was fresh, unmistakable evidence that something had happened to him there. So how was he walking away, calm and composed, with that infuriating smirk on his face?“This doesn’t make sense,” I muttered under my breath. I stepped into the restroom, my eyes scanning every corner. The sink was still wet, droplets of water clinging to its surface. The mirror above it was fogged slightly, likely from Max leaning in close as he tried to clean himself up.As I moved further in, my eyes landed on something on the edge of the counter. A tiny bo

But go on, if it’ll make you feel better.”He exhaled, his gaze shifting briefly to the floor. “I met her a few days ago. It wasn’t planned. I... accidentally hit her with my car.”I blinked, taken aback for a moment. “You hit her with your car?”“Yes,” he said quickly. “It was an accident. She was crossing the street, and I didn’t see her in time. She’s been recovering, and I felt responsible. That’s why I brought her here…to keep an eye on her.”I stared at him, my expression carefully neutral. “So you hit a woman with your car, and now she’s your responsibility?”“She doesn’t have anyone else,” he said, his voice softer now. “I just... I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.”I let out a short, humorless laugh. “The wrong
