~~~MAYA'S POV~~~
Feeling on top of the world, I spun around the room, holding Betsy's hands. My hair whipped around as we both let go of one hand while the other was still intact.
“Wooow!” I shouted out.
Feeling that I needed more energy, I slowly began to reduce my speed of swirling around until Betsy and I balanced. Then I snapped my fingers at one of the bartenders, who immediately handed me another glass.
After gulping it down, I returned the glass back on the tray which he was holding and then turned back to Betsy. “Let's continue,” I said, holding her hand again.
We continued to dance again but as I moved around, I suddenly noticed that I didn't see Lance anywhere.
I couldn’t even see someone that looked much like him around here.
I stopped dancing and glanced over at the bar but he wasn't there either.
“Where is he?” I asked no one in particular, scanning the room.
As I couldn’t find him anywhere, I leaned closer to Betsy and told her that I needed to find Lance before beginni
    (THE NEXT MORNING)The sun was barely up when I woke up, tying my hair into a messy bun. This morning, I woke up with a lot of energy—without any hangover or headache. And right now, I felt like doing something special.And that was cooking.So, without waking Lance up, I slid away from the bed and headed to the kitchen. Getting to the kitchen, I began to make breakfast, still thinking about how much I enjoyed myself yesterday.It was so amazing.The kitchen was quiet, except for the soft sizzle of bacon in the pan. I moved around, multitasking like a pro—flipping pancakes, stirring the soup, and slicing vegetables all at once.Then I made freshly brewed coffee mixed with warm vanilla… just like Lance loved it.By the time I was done, the dining table looked like something out of a cooking show. There were golden pancakes stacked high, fresh fruit sliced to perfection, salads, steaming hot soup, crispy bacon, sausage rolls, and warm bread straight from the oven. I just made everything
    Maya…” she dragged my name, and my stomach twisted a little as if I was scared of what she wanted to say. “Did you… taste this before serving it?”I blinked at her, not once but more than three times as I tried to remember if I did taste the food or not.Taste it?Oh my God!I... I really didn't remember tasting any of it. I was just so caught up with finishing everything quickly and setting the table before they woke up that I didn’t even taste the food that I made.“I... is it that bad?” I stammered, my hands suddenly clammy.Everyone's eyes darted to me immediately, even though it was only Betsy who had taken a bite from the lasagna.Then Mia also picked up her fork and ate some of the lasagna, but her face suddenly twisted in horror, and she dropped the fork with a loud clank, picked a tissue, and spat it out. “ It seems somehow…I don't know, but maybe overcooked. And it's also very salty.”Turning to Bella, she added. “I don't think it will be a good idea if you try this out. How
    ~~~SOPHIA'S POV~~~Leaning against the wall with my arms crossed, I watched the maids moving around my bedroom as they packed my things into suitcases. They were quiet and fast, folding clothes and stacking boxes like little worker bees. I didn’t bother helping. Why would I? That’s what they were paid for.One of them picked up my silk dress and tossed it into the suitcase without a second thought. I narrowed my eyes.“Fold that properly,” I snapped, my voice sharp as a blade. The girl froze and quickly pulled it out to smooth the wrinkles. “Do you have any idea how much that dress costs? One single crease, and I swear I will throw you out of this house myself.”She mumbled an apology and continued packing.Pathetic.As my eye scanned my big room, my eyes shifted to the large mirror across the room. I saw my own reflection staring back at me, cold and unbothered. Seeing some strand of hair messy, I gently used my hand to straighten my long, dark hair that cascaded over my shoulders.I

I must be stupid to think you could change so easily.”“It’s so good that you realize that you are. I'm—”“Why?” she asked, cutting me off. “Why did you do all this? To me. To my father. I thought we are all family, Sophia. So why?”I could see disappointment and pain in her eyes, as she waited for my response. But those sickly emotion of he, only her more irritating. she always tries to act innocent. I laughed, shaking my head as I took a slow step toward her.“Family,” I repeated. “You say that like it means something. Do you know what happens in the wild, Maya? The way I was driving right now—I had never driven like that before. I just kept blaring the horn, speeding at the highest limit without even stopping at the traffic signal. I knew that I would still have to drop by the police station later but right now, we were talking about my daughter. The tires screeched as I pulled into the school parking lot, my heart hammering in my chest. My hands trembled against the steering wheel as I jerked to a stop, barely remembering to put the car in park before I flung the door open. "Maya, wait!" Betsy called out behind me, her voice thin with worry as she and Mia scrambled from their seats. But I ignored her, my legs propelling me forward with a mother's desperate energy. Every second that passed without knowing where my daughter was felt like glass shards in my lungs. "She has to be somewhere within the school," Mia panted, jogging to catch up with me. "There has to be some misunderstanding." I whirled around, my eyes burning. "Then why d

    The world felt as if it was spinning out of control, a relentless tornado of grief, fear, and desperate hope crushing my soul with each passing moment. It had been two days. Two good days since Bella disappeared, and we haven't heard a single thing about her whereabouts. Two days since the entire city turned upside down, searching for her as we placed a huge reward for whoever knew anything or had any information about her whereabouts. A perfect place to carry out my plan and make sure that my father also goes down with me. After selling me out, he should at least expect this amount of punishment. I rested my back against the cold, cracked wall, and my finger traced the face of Bella, who was sleeping peacefully on my lap. I'd been drugging her as she just wouldn't stop asking me so many questions about why we're here instead of going home. She kept asking about another mommy when her real mother was here. I blinked. “You’re quitting? Why?”Then Diana hesitated, her eyes darting toward Lance, who was on the ground, for a brief second before looking down. I could see something like embarrassment on her face.“I… I just think it’s best if I go.”I frowned. “No, that’s not a real answer. I asked why you suddenly want to leave. You told your fans and everyone that you were volunteering for six months, and you’ve hardly even spent two weeks. Now you’re leaving?”She smiled weakly. “Yes, that’s true. It’s just that I need to do some things for myself too. Please don’t take it personally. I actually came here to create a good impression on my fans, but now… I have realized many things…”Then she burst into tears, using her hand to wipe them away as they streamed down. I just watched with my mouth open.She then bowed her head. “I am truly sorry. Really, really sorry. I promise never to do that again. In fact, I will never cross your path again,” she said quickly.“Huh? Sorry about what? Why a

    The workshop was at the back of the orphanage's main building. It was a small house built for storing things, but Lance decided to make use of it as a workshop. Lance made small chairs and tables for the kids and he also made swings and so many things around here with the use of wood. They were all amazing. Had no idea he had that in him. But what I like most when he’s doing his job here is when he's shirtless and working. I giggled at the thought of that.I liked watching him cut the woods as he looked so hot during that time—his hair falling over his face as he rise and fall, picking things up. His abs. And sweat streaming down his well-chiseled body as he focused on his work… I loved it all.As I wanted to enter the workshop, I saw the flowers planted outside. So I walked closer and picked some, hanging around my hair and putting some behind my ears.Stepping inside, I saw Lance picking up a bottle of water from the freezer. He opened it and began to drink, turning around at th

    We were in the middle of gisting when a horrible wave of nausea hit me. It crawled up my throat like a monster trying to escape.I quickly covered my mouth, trying to hold it in, but it was like my stomach was flipping itself inside out.“Maya, are you alright? Should I get you some water?” Morgan asked in a concerned tone as she quickly stood up from the bed, trying to get some water.“No, it's fine,” I said, stopping her. “It's just something I have been feeling for a while now, but it's temporary.”Taking her seat back, she asked, “Are you sure you are alright now?”I nodded fast. “Yeah, yeah. I’m totally fine. I just—”But before I could finish my words, it happened again, and this time, it was stronger.I covered my mouth with one hand and used the other hand to hit my chest, trying to make it stop, but it wasn't stopping.“I think I need to call someone. I listened as she slowly began to tell me how her mother-in-law and sister-in-laws were treating her the same way she and her mother had treated me when I was married to Lance. And she had two sister-in-laws. Twins.No matter what she did, it was never enough for the three of them. They insulted her for every single mistake, criticized her for every bad thing that happened to her husband—even if it was his job that had problems—and always made her feel like she wasn’t good enough. Every bad thing and misfortune that happened to her husband was blamed on her.“At first, I thought I could handle it." She continued. "That as long as I was good to them and made them happy, they would like me more and stop treating me like that,” she let out a bitter laugh. “So whenever they were angry, I would buy them expensive gifts like designer bags and shoes, just to appease them.And for a while, it worked. They smiled and all started acting nice. But then they always wanted more. But after sometim

    SIX MONTHS LATER ~~~MAYA’S POV~~~ Looking up into the sky, I used my hand to cover my eyes as the warm morning sun shone on me. Seeing the sky so clear and bright, I think today will be very, very great. Something good is going to happen. I smiled and then continued my work, which was spreading the freshly washed bedspread on the rope. It is a weekend thing for me—or should I say for every woman in this orphanage—and I like doing it as it gives me time to think, to breathe, and at the same time, to watch Bella while working. I wasn’t the only one washing the entire bedspread alone in this orphanage, as we had other women who were employed and those who also came to volunteer for a few days. Some even spent months with us, helping with the kids and other work in the orphanage. The orphanage was always lively and busy, especially in the mornings when all the kids woke up at the same time. It was filled with the sounds of children running down from each of their rooms, having morni

    The hall was quiet, filled with the soft murmurs of people talking in hushed voices. The only loud sounds were the occasional sniffle or the rustling of fabric as someone shifted uncomfortably in their seat.A few candles flickered near the large framed photo of Mia, casting shadows on her smiling face. It almost made it look as if she was watching us.But she wasn’t—she was right in front of all of us… in the coffin.I took a deep breath as I looked around from where I was standing. I just wished that this would end soon and that all these passing storms would go with it.There were few people here, as the burial was private. Maya’s parents were seated in the front row on the left side, with Bella sitting between them.Kingsley also came with Lysol.Henry was also here, but the monkey could be seen leaning against the wall at the back of the hall, arguing with his client. ~~~~LANCE'S POV~~~~I stood in front of the mirror, wearing my tie while also looking at Maya's figure on the bed. I sighed heavily as the black suit I was wearing felt heavier than it should.Maybe because today wasn’t just any other day but the day we were laying Mia to rest. And as much as I wanted to be strong, I couldn’t shake the weight pressing against my chest because Mia's death had caused a lot of damage to my family—both to Maya and to Bella.Maya had completely changed in ways I couldn't understand. It was as if she carried a guilt too heavy for her to bear, and she wouldn’t talk to me or anyone about it. If she wasn't sitting on the balcony and gazing out into empty space, she would be staring at or holding Mia’s picture, pressing it tightly to her chest as if letting go of it would mean letting go of Mia.And no matter what I did to bring her to her senses and make her understand that we were losing Bella, she just wouldn't come to her right mind.
