CHAPTER FIFTY ONE

His face was a mask of regret, but I couldn't bring myself to care. Not now. Not when his words were still ringing in my ears.

"I... I was angry. I know I shouldn't have said that and I'm very sorry for that," he stammered, reaching for me.

I jerked away from his touch. "No, you shouldn't have. But you did. And you can't take it back."

"Maya, please, let me explain. About earlier, at the park—"

"I told you, there's nothing to explain!" I snapped, my voice rising. "You made your choices. You chose to be with... whoever that is... on our engagement day. While I was dealing with my whole world falling apart!"

Kingsley's eyes widened. "No, Maya, it wasn't like that. If you'd just listen—"

"Listen?" I laughed bitterly. "Kinglsey, I've done nothing but listen. I listened when you said you'd be there for me. I listened when you promised we'd face everything together. But where were you when I needed you most?"
