Jacques lowered his voice, storming out and slamming the door behind him. The resounding crash startled anyone within earshot and left Frederick seething. Consumed by rage, Frederick began smashing objects in his office, his fury unchecked by the thought that his outburst might be heard by his employees outside. The room descended into chaos, and he finally collapsed into his chair, overwhelmed and unable to regain control of his emotions.

One name echoed relentlessly in his mind: Leonard Hugues.

"Yes... isn't Jacques after Leonard's heart? All I need to do is kill him and offer his heart to Ellijah. That's all. I just need to kill Leonard," Frederick muttered, his trembling voice betraying an unsettling conviction, as if the task were child's play. Moments ago, he had deemed Leonard an opponent not to be underestimated. Yet now, his confidence soared, as though trapping Leonard would be as simple as baiting a street rat with poisoned sausage.

It wasn't that his opinion of Leonard had

Four days had passed since Leonard's return to Marseille, yet Chateau hadn’t seen him even once. She spent her mornings indoors, tending to activities within the mansion after her tea. She no longer went out to meet informants—her last interaction with Sophie Vignier, one of the reliable ones, had ended with them losing contact. Chateau regretted it, wishing she could meet Sophie again and talk like old friends.Chateau’s curiosity about Leonard’s purpose for returning to his hometown remained unanswered. She had no idea where to begin her search for answers, but her longing for clarity persisted. It wasn’t out of necessity but because she genuinely wanted to know—as a woman who belonged to Leonard, she felt entitled to this. Unfortunately, there was no one she could ask.“Chateau?” a voice broke her reverie as Tethia touched her shoulder. Startled, Chateau quickly turned off the water hose she had been using to water the garden’s flowers.“If you only water this one flower, the other

"Lucky?""You don’t have to constantly worry about tomorrow, wondering if you’ll see your man with another woman again, or if you’ll stop being useful—like Tethia. You’re fortunate because Leonard likes you."Chateau averted her gaze once again, avoiding Madison's penetrating eyes, which only made her blush harder."Ah... yes... maybe that’s true," she admitted quietly."You’re admitting it?" Madison responded eagerly. "You should really be more honest about your feelings. You might try to deny it—it’s probably your pride refusing to accept that you’ve completely fallen for someone you didn’t want to like in the first place. But let’s face it, my dear Damsel: when you’re in love, there’s no saving you—not even from yourself."Chateau fell into a prolonged silence, contemplating Madison’s words, which seemed to urge her to cast aside her pride and admit her feelings. Yet, deep inside, another part of her offered a different explanation for the shift in her emotions."I’ve been learning

"I lack the courage to meet Leonard at his headquarters while bringing Ellijah along. Yet wherever I go, I must take Ellijah with me. I heard this place belongs to the Lafleur women, and one of the women here is Leonard's. I thought it would be easier to summon Leonard through you," Jacques explained his intentions more clearly. "Forgive me, Lady Lavigne. This matter is urgent and of utmost importance—it concerns Ellijah’s life."Despite Jacques’ explanation, Chateau was more confused about what he meant by “Ellijah’s life.” However, she understood one thing: whatever Jacques needed to discuss was not suitable for conversation within the mansion. “Shall we talk outside?” Chateau suggested, wary that sensitive information might be overheard or misused by unintended parties.Jacques nodded, agreeing to her proposal. They moved to the garden at the front of the mansion. Before joining him, Chateau excused herself to change and instructed the servants to prepare refreshments for her guest

“Ah … it seems you already know. Forgive me, Lady Lavigne.”“Why are you apologizing...?”“Because I acted shamelessly. I am the son of the man who stole Leonard’s happiness, and yet I came here, uninvited and without shame, to speak with him.”Chateau avoided looking directly at Jacques. She harbored resentment toward Jacques’ father, the man who had destroyed Leonard’s life—a crime she believed was beyond forgiveness. Yet Jacques stood before her now as a father pleading for his daughter, not as the son of an unrepentant man.“In truth, Leonard has no idea I know about my acknowledge to your father. I’m new to his life, and our relationship isn’t close enough for him to confide his dark past to me. I learned of it from others who know him well.”“I see. He’s the type who might never reveal his past, even to his closest companion,” Chateau said, lowering her gaze with a faint smile.“So, what kind of help are you seeking from Leonard? Leonard rooted in place, his gaze fixed intently on Chateau’s eyes. Even after several seconds passed, he showed no reaction to the confession of love she had just made before him. This left Chateau waiting anxiously. Leonard’s passivity in matters unrelated to his work was nothing new, but for something as significant to Chateau as this, she expected at least a single word in response."Are you really not going to say anything?" Chateau finally asked, conceding defeat and breaking the silence herself.Leonard eventually spoke, though only after being prompted. "What do you want me to say?""I want you to say, ‘I love you too.’""I love you."Chateau froze. Her eyes were locked on Leonard, who held her gaze just as intently. Her heart raced, threatening to burst if she couldn’t calm it down. She didn’t know what caused this overwhelming reaction—was it because this was the first time a man had ever said those words to her, or because it was Leonard who had said them? After a moment of

After Leonard's departure, Chateau decided to enter the mansion. She was greeted by Madison and Tethia, who seemed to be wearing strange expressions, clearly teasing her. Chateau guessed... they must have been watching from a distance when Leonard met with her.Her suspicion was confirmed by both of them. “Well?” Madison asked, supported by Tethia, whose eyes were sparkling with hope. “Did you confess your feelings to him?”Chateau sighed. She remembered telling Madison about it earlier, but when they met again, Madison brought it up again. However, it didn’t matter if Chateau told the truth. “I did.”Madison didn’t expect that. She and, of course, Tethia, exclaimed loudly, “REALLY!?”“And I was rejected.” Their excited expressions were shattered by Chateau’s surprising revelation.“Y-you were rejected?” Tethia asked, trying to confirm what she had heard. Chateau nodded, and that answer was indeed disappointing. “But I saw you two hugging so intimately earlier.”Chateau shifted her ga

With no one else to care for the young girl, Jacques was unable to leave her side, not even to meet Leonard. When Leonard entered the hospital room, he found Jacques dozing off beside his daughter, who lay asleep with a breathing apparatus affixed to her nose. Leonard paused by the doorframe, observing his exhausted brother, who chose to remain by Ellijah’s side rather than rest on the spacious, comfortable sofa in the well-equipped room."I thought I was moving quietly," Leonard said, placing a bouquet on the bedside table while holding a large brown envelope in his other hand.Jacques responded with a faint chuckle. “I wasn’t actually asleep,” he said, though Leonard silently noted the soft snores that had betrayed him moments before. Chateau lost her shoes at some point during her journey here. She paused briefly to catch her breath, scanning her surroundings in hopes of spotting Leonard. If the gray-eyed man with brown hair was truly Leonard, why was this chase necessary? Why hadn’t he just come to her? Why had he made her run all the way to the village center just to find him among so many people?“Leonard...”Chateau searched the crowd, desperately trying to match each face with the image burned into her memory. Tall and lean, with brown hair and a confident stride—Leonard should stand out easily. Yet, she couldn’t find him. Was he even here? Had Shawn been mistaken? Was she foolish to hope? Her heart ached with the realization that hope did not guarantee reality. She had allowed herself to believe in finding Leonard, forgetting to consider other possibilities. In that moment, she was overcome by the betrayal of her own expectations.“What was I thinking?” she muttered, ashamed. “Why did I run all the way here?

Chateau had no idea how long she had been sitting under the shade of that large tree. She stared into the distance, her thoughts drifting as she recalled the events she had forgotten since that fateful night. However, the more she remembered, the more regret and frustration bubbled within her—anger at herself for nearly forgetting who Leonard Hugues was. The truth was undeniable: Leonard was the one person she could not imagine living without, even for a second."You fool… how could you do this to Leonard?" Chateau muttered, berating herself in despair. She wiped her tears away, but no matter how much she tried, Leonard did not appear before her.Leaning back against the tree, she wept again. "Where are you, Leonard? Won’t you come back?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Why won’t you return? I’m not angry about your lies. Madam Aurora said Louis is dead, but why… why won’t you come back?"She bowed her head, hiding her tear-streaked face, which must have looked dreadful from all

How many lambs were born?""Seventeen lambs, Lady! And all of them are healthy!"Chateau Lavigne couldn't hide her joy as she received the wonderful news on this bright morning. Louis paused, observing Leonard struggle to stand upright atop the rubble. Leonard's sharp gaze pierced through the tension, and then he smirked faintly. "Do you wish to see Sophie that badly? I'd be happy to escort you."Louis laughed bitterly, though his irritation was evident. Leonard's arrogance persisted, even as he appeared on the verge of death. Blood smeared half of Leonard's face, his once-white shirt tattered and stained with crimson. The numerous tears in his clothing revealed the extent of his injuries, and his mangled right hand clutched a broken pistol.Glancing at Louis' line of sight, Leonard acknowledged his own state, tossing aside the useless weapon. "Let's finish this," he declared, his voice steady despite his condition.Louis scoffed and extended his palm dismissively. "Finish what? You're barely standing. Why prolong your suffering? Just lay down and wait for your end. It's inevitable-""Are you scared?" Leonard interrupted calmly. The taunt struck a nerve. Loui

Leonard collapsed to the ground, but the relentless barrage of bullets forced him to crawl, enduring the searing pain, toward any form of cover he could find. He tugged at his numbed leg briefly, only to notice that Louis' bullet had carved a deep gash into his ankle."Damn it!" he muttered through gritted teeth, wincing as he tore a strip from his pants to staunch the bleeding. The journey ahead was far from over, and he couldn't afford to lose strength from such a wound. While Leonard was battered and bleeding, Louis stood unscathed, his posture calm and unyielding. If Louis had only wielded a single gun, Leonard might have had a chance to even the odds. Yet, Louis had swapped to another pistol the moment the first two ran out of ammunition, giving Leonard no opportunity to regroup.Leonard steadied his breathing as Louis began speaking."You know, this suit I'm wearing tonight-it was a gift from my lover. Leonard walked down the concrete stairs of an old, unfinished building. With weary steps and a somber expression, he kept his gaze fixed on the ground, paying careful attention to his footing until he reached his destination.Today was as he had promised-he would meet Louis, no matter where the man was. This wasn't a reunion to reminisce or rekindle; it was a meeting with a singular purpose: to kill each other.Naturally, Leonard's feelings were far from composed. He had asked Louis's biological mother for permission to kill her son. Wasn't that utterly tragic? What mother wouldn't feel torn when her child faced mortal danger, even if there was nothing she could do to stop it?"Oh, you're here, Leonard...?"Leonard's gaze shifted straight ahead, focusing on Louis, who stood with his back to him, casually smoking while leaning against a pillar in the open framework of the fourth floor. The wind blew fiercely at this height, and the night sky offered no clarity. Louis chose to smoke as

She threw herself in front of Chateau’s car, causing a crash that ended with the vehicle slamming violently into a tree. She knew Louis would have planned something like this. Even now, at the moment she was truly leaving and might never return."Château…” Amelia greeted her with a warm embrace. Her anxiety only deepened upon seeing her daughter in such a distressed state.Château was no longer crying—perhaps she was too exhausted—but her hollow gaze suggested her body was merely an empty shell.“Are we leaving right away?” Château asked flatly, her voice devoid of any tone.Amelia looked at her with concern.
