RANLEIGH
“What the hell did you just call me?” the driver irritatedly asked.“Doggy? I guess?”The man laughed sarcastically. “I am Bryce’s right hand, the second in position next to the boss. I am not just anyone, Miss. Asmodeus. More especially, I am not someone's dog, I am from a powerful household.” The man fixed his tuxedo. “So if you’re just using the young master for your gain, I suggest you stop. That is if you still treasure your life. As you can see, we could kill you mercilessly, Miss. Asmodeus.”I widened my eyes, acting as if I was shocked by the news. I looked at the man and bit my lower lip, stopping myself from laughing. They once almost killed my father by beating him up nonstop. Do they really think that I would never think that they could kill and that they wouldn’t harm me? And rumors about them going on a rampage once in a while was all over the place. “Oh really?” I asked.I didn’t care about them harming me, really. And I knew Bryce even before the loan sharks started harassing my family and I already knew how ruthless the Vergara family members could be before engaging in a contractual relationship with Bryce. The news about them being merciless didn’t shock me at all.“Do I seem to care?”The man shook his head and sighed. He looked at me like he was telling me how reckless I am. He shook his head and sighed again as he loosen his tie.In the end, the man just shrugged his shoulders and walked near the gate. As we stood up in front, the gate automatically opened when the man pushed something. A button perhaps? I am not sure what it was. I’ve never seen something like that even after working at some noble’s estate. We both entered and passed through the gate.I couldn’t help but be in awe after entering the gate of the Vergara Family’s estate. I enthusiastically looked side by side like a kid who just entered the Animal Kingdom. The driver sighed. “Please mind your manners, my lady. If the young master’s ex sees you like this, uneducated and ill-mannered, she might laugh and insult my boss.”I just rolled my eyes. I don’t care what others would think about me. The man who Bryce sent to fetch me wasn’t their family driver but Bryce’s most trusted right hand himself. No wonder why he was awful. He is Bryce’s nearest aide and they are the same. Birds with the same feather, flocks together. And he thought that I was just using Bryce for my gain. He didn’t know that it was the opposite and I was forced to do Bryce’s bidding.“This way please,” the man stated.I nodded and followed the man. He started walking and kept on glancing back at me once in a while. He looked like he was too afraid that Ranleigh might do something weird that could ruin the Vergara family's reputation in just a snap.I am once again speechless from the beauty of the place unfolding in front of me. The mansion is very well-cared. It is undoubtedly stunning at first glance. Paintings were hanging on the wall. The outstanding painting that costs millions was the first piece of furniture that blessed my eyes right after entering the mansion. I was even tempted to sell it.There were two hallways after entering the main door. The man walked to the right hallway. Not too long after walking, they reached the living room. I could see millions of dollars in each and every piece of furniture inside. There’s no doubt that they are one of the richest nobles of the country. But among those furniture that is worth more than millions, there is something that radiates more than anything and it is the most eye-catching of them all. An eye-candy.Bryce was expensively sitting at a single sofa while facing his laptop. His thick brows furrowed while talking to someone. He looked at me,licked his red lips like he was seducing someone, and continued talking again. His necktie was hanging loose around his neck. He looked sexy with his eye-glasses on.I am sure that I will not fall in love with someone like Bryce but seeing him in his corporate attire with his eye-glasses on, looking smoking hot and sexy, I felt her heart skip a beat.I clenched my jaw.Why the hell was my heart beating this fast? If this isn’t palpitations because of overdrinking coffee, then I’m screwed!Bryce is dangerous for my heart. I sighed and clenched my fist. I had to guard my heart or I would end up broken after the contract ended. I need to sort out my attraction towards Bryce before it's too late — before that mere attraction turns into something deeper. Falling for him wasn’t part of the plan after all.“Please wait on the sofa until my boss finishes his virtual meeting, my lady,” the man stated.I nodded my head in trance. “Yeah… sure.”The man left and I was left unattended. Bryce is busy with something. There was nothing to do so I took out her phone and started scrolling on her social media applications. While scrolling, I saw news about the family members of the Vergara estate and the other powerful families. Scandals and gossip that are worth wasting time for. They were on the cover page of an article, probably to catch the attention of the readers.[BRYCE VERGARA, THE YOUNG MASTER OF THE VERGARA MARQUISATE, IS ENGAGED TO SOME LOWLY COMMONER?!]I just sighed at my current disposition. A day hadn’t passed yet since I became Bryce’s contractual lover but the public was already spilling some teas. Though I couldn’t really blame anyone. I am aware that this would be a lit to the gossip society but I still agreed. A part of it was my fault anyway. I loved my family so much that I was willing to put my freedom and dignity on the line just so I could provide them a peaceful and happy life. It is my fault and I didn’t regret my decision. As absurd as it is, I don't care about what would happen to me anymore as long as I am pretty sure that my family is doing well somewhere. But more than that, I couldn’t tolerate such insults just for being poor.I then snorted. “What’s so wrong with being a commoner? Is it a sin? What’s the big deal?” I gritted my teeth. “These kinds of people just get on my nerves sometimes. Hypocrisy at its finest,” I whispered.“There’s nothing wrong with being poor, Ms. Asmodeus. It’s just that some of those on higher status tend to look down on those in lower positions as filthy. It is common in the elite social circle to gossip and talk bad about you since you are my fiancée.”I looked at Bryce, annoyed “So there’s nothing you could do about it?”Bryce smirked. “I can shut them up but why would I bother? I am a busy person after all.”I rolled my eyes. Bryce was simply telling me to face all of the problems by myself and solve them without Bryce’s help.“Face them and prove them your worth. Only in that way could you survive in my world, Ms. Asmodeus.”I bit my lower lip. I had no idea what problems I had to face in the future and Bryce made it clear that he wouldn't help me no matter what.Prove them your worth. I chuckled. If Bryce didn’t bother to clean up his name in public and let them think that he is indeed a sick bastard who goes on rampage and killed people at his own will, why would I bother to clean my name for them? Bryce was seen as a cold-blooded man while they saw me filthy. If that’s what they wanted to believe, should I waste my time to rectify their rotten mind? No!Anyway, aren’t we a perfect match?I unconsciously tucked my hair behind my ear and chuckled. Both I and Bryce got a very bad reputation. Isn’t it a perfect match, indeed? It was as if we were made for each other.I widened her eyes, shocked by my own thoughts.“Woman! Are you even listening?” Bryce asked, looking at me as if his patience was wearing thin.I cleared my throat and awkwardly answered, “Y-Yes.”Bryce looked at me suspiciously. “Then what did I just say, Miss Asmodeus?”“Uh.. uhm…” I trailed off.Damn! He caught me off-guard.Bryce took a deep breath. “I won’t say this again, Ranleigh Asmodeus so you better listen carefully and take every word I say. We will be attending a party the day after tomorrow. Everything is settled and your instructor will be coming tomorrow to teach you the basics about nobility.”I nodded slowly. Nobility. It was the one word that I loathed the most. It reminded me of that one noble lady who caused all of my grandfather’s addiction which led me to where I am at the moment. My grandfather became a gambling addict after my grandmother, a noble lady, left my grandfather and my father alone. My grandfather loved that noble lady so much that he was willing to ruin himself after she left. And now, I am bound to attend a party that nobles, like my father's mother, would attend. I set up a rule for myself that I wouldn’t be tangled with anyone like my grandmother—a noble. Now, after decades of living by following my own rules without breaking a single one of them, I am now being forced to break them. I would be breaking my rules for my family.“Do I really need to attend that? Is it compulsory? Will I die if I don’t attend?”“Do I have to spell it up for you?” Bryce asked. His voice was hoarse and rigid. “I’ll tell you one rule that this household should never break, Ranleigh. No one should question the masters, but one must obey them no matter what. That’s what you must do as you are one of my people now.”I nodded my head although I badly wanted to complain. What people Bryce was talking about? We have a contract! We both signed it! We have an agreement and our relationship was beneficial for both sides. We are practically business partners!I let out a deep breath.“Do you have any complaints?” Bryce asked after seeing my face become distorted with rage.I laughed without humor. “I have tons of them but I won’t question you anymore. I totally understand, Mr. Bryce.”Bryce nodded. “That’s good. You understand the assignment. And one more thing, Ranleigh Asmodeus. You shouldn’t fall in love with me.”After Bryce turned his back as he strolled away from me. I rolled my eyes. Bryce is a fucking bastard.RANLEIGHAfter Bryce left, a maid guided me to my room that was prepared especially for me — that was at least what the maid said. It is on the second floor of the mansion and it is nerve-wracking to memorize every turn we made on our way to my room. The mansion is so big and there are so many hallways. I couldn’t memorize the way out of the mansion at all. Hell. It even looks like a palace. After arriving, I thanked the maid and smiled at her. The maid just bowed her head. “I’ll prepare your bath, my lady. Please excuse me.”I nodded my head and cued the maid to get out of the room. Without looking back, the maid got out of the room as if in a hurry.I sighed and slumped my body on the bed. I took a deep breath and stared at the ceiling that was carved with ancient designs. Prepare my bath? What do they think of me? An idiot who couldn’t even prepare the bath for myself?I shook my head. This life is just too different from my life outside the Marquisate and it isn’t for me at all.
RANLEIGHBryce lifted me out of the bed and walked near the door. He stared at me and cleared his throat. “You’re so stiff, woman. If you’re awake, open your eyes and walk with your own feet,” he stated.I cleared my throat in embarrassment and laughed awkwardly. Bryce gently put me down. “Everyone was busy fighting for their life, while you’re just sleeping there quietly. I’m quite amazed with your courage but that's risky, woman,” Bryce said with a blank expression.I chuckled. “I didn’t know that a fight arose inside your hacienda. You said that I should wait for you and I did. But it was taking you so long that I fell asleep while waiting,” I explained while looking at his eyes. I didn’t bat an eye nor did he. He just stared at me like he was reading my mind through my eyes. “Anyway… Is it just me, or are you worried about me?” I asked. Bryce remained silent. I couldn’t help but feel curious about what Bryce was thinking at the moment. If Bryce was doubting me or if he thinks th
RANLEIGH“If you’re going to lie, Your Excellency, please try controlling your expression. You're making it obvious that you are still head-over-heels with the lady,” I said. I scratched my head and laughed awkwardly. “You often wear a blank expression but that hard stoic face becomes soft every time you’ll mention her name. You’re being obvious, Sir,” I added.Bryce furrowed his brows. “What happened to Mr. Vergara? Why are you calling me more formally now?” he asked, totally ignoring what I just said.I cleared my throat and avoided his eyes. I will never admit that I am starting to draw a line between us. I knew that Bryce would ask me why and I don’t know how to dodge that question without telling him the truth. And hell! I will never admit that I am attracted to him and if he continues being nice to me, I’m afraid that I might really end up falling in love with him. I thought that he was an awful person based on how he acted the first time we met and the second until the third. Th
RANLEIGH“Where the fuck are you?” I moved my phone away from my ears and frowned. “Your voice is so fucking loud, Dior,” I cursed between my breath. “Fuck you!” she shouted. I laughed when I imagined her rolling her eyes. “I came to your company to visit and check on you and guess what?” she asked. “You weren’t there, Leigh! And Gab? He looked like a pup who just got abandoned,” Dior shouted dramatically. “You heartless woman, where did you go and why did you resign? Was it true that you are engaged with someone? Who’s the fucking guy? Is he hot?” I shook my head and ended the call. She’s too loud. She needs to calm down while I need peace of mind. I took a deep breath before looking around my room and I couldn’t help but notice that the room is bigger than the one at the previous house. The whole room is the size of my family’s apartment. It was divided into four rooms. The things are also completed from the receiving area inside my room mainly for the visitors, to the counter an
RANLEIGH“The lady needs to know the basic etiquettes so the Marquess’ name won’t be put in jeopardy,” a maid whispered. I slightly opened my eyes and looked at her. She was combing her hair gently with a soft expression. The other maid groaned in annoyance. She was more hostile than the first. “Why do I have to serve such a woman? My parents didn’t raise me for this!” she yelledI slowly opened my eyes and stared at the two. They were very well dressed for a maid and elegance could be seen from the way they talked. I grinned. I wished to see more of these noble’s distorted faces after seeing a commoner reign higher than them. A commoner who they looked down could fly higher than they ever could. It would be fantastic to see their disappointed and enraged faces. But it would be more fantastic to see my grandmother’s face filled with rage. I got up and stretched my arms. A good sunny morning for me should be a hell to the two ladies.I smiled as I walked towards the two. It is really
THIRD PERSON POV“Don’t you feel sorry for Lady Ranleigh at all, Bryce?” Sheldon asked. Bryce tilted his head and chuckled. “Why would I?” he asked while his eyes were still on his phone.Sheldon sighed and looked outside the window. Yeah, why would he? It was Sheldon who slapped Ranleigh’s face under Bryce’s command. Every time Sheldon recall Ranleigh’s empty eyes after that incident was making him regretful. It is ridiculous to regret something that you intended to do but he is still ashamed of their actions. And he knows that it is wrong to act based on what they saw without knowing the backstory. They had the time to ask what happened but they didn’t. And now, it is making him feel guilty. “We’ve wronged her, Bryce.”“She should have stood up for herself if she wanted. It’s her fault that she didn’t try explaining,” Bryce coldly retorted. “I have no ground for a conscience that wasn’t mine to keep in the first place, Sheldon. You know that I had long ago forgotten how to be compun
I turned around and looked at myself in the mirror. I am wearing a backless dress and it exposed the rose tats on my back. The scars aren’t that visible either as it was being hidden under the tats’ ink but even if it was exposed, I don't really care. I didn’t dress to gain the audiences’ approval anyway and none of their opinions are valid. No matter what they say, I look gorgeous. And even so, why the fuck do I even have to care about their opinion when all they do was just gossip with everybody’s life? Couldn’t they just fuck off and shut up and just fix themselves first instead of pointing out what’s wrong with other people? They are no saints and none of them are perfect so what’s the deal about us being this flawed?“My lady.”I looked at Xianre as she tiptoed and leaned her head closer to mine. I saw her blinking her green eyes. “Lady Hanzel is outside with Sir Bryce.”The eldest young lady of the Green. I wonder what she is doing at a man’s house that has a lover? Does she in
“You should enjoy the night, Leigh!” Xianre shouted. I bobbed my head, trying to match her enthusiasm. Though I could tell that she knew I was faking it. She just couldn’t say it out loud.I looked around the crowd trying to pinpoint where that person who kept on staring at me was. Crowd. I was never upset being in a crowd before. Not even once in my life did I choose to sit and grumble in one corner at a bar but I can say that this time is different. Ever since I entered the bar, I could feel a pair of eyes staring at me as if they were monitoring me. As it is, they are calculating my every move. I felt like I was being watched from a corner and it’s not making me any comfortable. Though I shouldn’t let Xianre worry about me this time. She should enjoy the night as much as she can. I brushed my hair and looked at Xianre who was staring at me. “I’m fine here. Go on and enjoy the night, Xian, I don’t mind,” I declared. Xianre looked at me weirdly as if she sensed something. I smile
“What are you doing here, Bryce?” I asked when I saw Bryce getting in my room. He took one more step and closed the door behind him. “This is my house, babe. Of course I’d be here.” He motions his finger at me to come to him. I obeyed and I knew exactly that it was so out of my character. But, it was as if my feet had its own life and it was willingly obeying Bryce. Why am I doing this? Was it because of his dominating demeanor that made me obey? If that is so, it’s making sense now as to why he’s the mafia lord. He started walking towards me making me instantly regret walking near him. I immediately stopped back as if my feet were stuck. He sighed. He closed the gap between us, making me move a step backward. He was way too domineering. He looked at my lips and then to my eyes and to my lips again, making me bite them. As I explore the view, his eyes met mine. “I’m sorry about what happened today. Something came up,” he whispered with his raspy voice. I gasped when I felt his
“What an idiot.”Dior’s eyes bore into mine with a judgmental stare as if she's dissecting every nuance, leaving me exposed to the weight of her scrutiny. She had been cursing me boldly earlier.“You really texted him that?” she asked again, making me repeat what I just confessed earlier. “Yeah?”“Wow!” she shouted before clapping her hand in the air. “I thought Tyler’s the only idiot in this world, and here you come telling me you did something so fucking stupid! Where in the hell did you leave your brain at, Ranleigh?!”“I just want to save them though?”“Okay, you idiot heroine. You think they would be grateful to you after you did that?”“I just want to help? I am not expecting anything in return.”Dior clenched her fist. “I know you were fucking stupidly selfless before you gave birth to your son but seeing it now, I just can’t help but feel disappointed at you, Leigh. You’re acting like how a people pleaser will act. It’s disgusting. What the fuck is wrong with you?!” she sho
“I’m glad you’re here,” Sheldon declared as soon as he saw me. He strides confidently, clad in sleek black attire that contrasts elegantly with his fair complexion, creating a striking and sophisticated build. His hair was a tousled chaos with each rebellious strand escaping in every direction as if trying to break free from the confines of order, and his face… I guess he does have a very bad day, huh?“I bet you do,” I replied with a bit of sarcasm. He rolled his eyes and grabbed my wrist before dragging me inside Bryce’s office. I was shocked to see what was happening inside. The office was a labyrinth of disorder with the papers scattered, folders standing at precarious angles, and a chaotic jumble of cables snaking their way across the desk. I looked at Bryce who was holding a lengthy cable and was trying to choke someone by using it. “Bryce, please stop!” Sheldon shouted in desperation. Bryce acted as if he didn’t hear Sheldon. He ignored him and instead focused on choking th
“Forget about what that old man said, Leigh. You don’t have to do whatever he tells you,” Bryce declared. He faked a cough before looking at me. “It will be better if you just ignore him. I can cover up for you,” he added. I bit my lip. I know that Henry found out about something he shouldn’t and I can’t just ignore that. I can't turn a blind eye to this one even if I want to. I don’t know how he made it happen but it seems that Henry Vergara, Bryce's father, found out about his grandson. Seriously, where did he get all this idea? I did all the cleaning and I made sure of it that no one would find out but he still did. I also made sure that those who know will shut up or they’ll forever hold their peace. Who among them betrayed me? Now, I have to know what he wants. I am sure we can talk this out — I hope we can talk it out. “Yeah,” I lied. Bryce nodded slowly as if something bothered him but that was short-lived. He smiled after. “That’s… that's actually good to hear,” he trailed o
We arrived at the manor an hour later. My mind was all fuzzy. After what Bryce said, my brain seemed to malfunction. I couldn’t think of anything but the sensation of his lips brushing against mine, how it turns me on, and the words he said that disturbed my whole system. Damn him!“You arrived safely, my lady,” Sheldon declared. “The Marquis is waiting for you inside.”“Has his grace already heard about the commotion?” I asked. Sheldon looked at me and nodded his head. “News sure flies so fucking fast.” I commented. “May I advise my lady to watch your words when talking with His Grace,” Sheldon declared. I nodded my head. I, at least, knew that much. Henry Vergara isn't someone I can be casual with. Even if I am his daughter-in-law.“My lady, please consider my advice,” Sheldon declared. I forced a smile. What's up with them now? Not only did he seem to be anxious but the way Bryce acted now and Henry's sudden visit showed that there was something going on. Internal affairs, if I
I closed my eyes. So this wasn’t the first time that Ace did this? Not that it was a shocking truth. It was not that hard to understand their situation. Anyone who has the clue can guess as much.Ace was hidden from the public. The whole world knows that the Marquis had only one heir and it was Bryce. Ace can have fun by borrowing Bryce’s identity. But why was Ace, Bryce's identical twin, being hidden? What prompted them to do such an act?“I guess I’ve been tolerating your actions too much these days, Ace.” Bryce's face darkened. “Don’t forget your place,” he added. Ace’s jaw clenched. He turned his back and walked out without saying anything which took me by surprise. What the hell was that? That is so not like him. From the very short time that I came to know him, he seemed like the type to put up a fight. “Let’s go.” Bryce grabbed my hand and dragged me into his car. Both of us sat in the back while his bodyguards sat in front. They drove the car without saying a word or two. N
“In the count of three, crouch down while covering your head. Do you understand?” Bryce mouthed. I nodded my head. He didn’t give me time to react or ask questions after that. As soon as I nodded my head, he immediately started counting. Gunshots from different sides started firing. Bryce hugged my whole body as if protecting me from bullets. I wasn’t shaken even after hearing those loud gunshots but knowing that Bryce was covering me with his body put me in an alarming situation. If there was one word that could describe him best, it would be nonchalant. How dare he throw himself in such a situation?! Who does he think he is?! Superman? Damn it!I struggled a bit to push him away from me but he tightened his grip even more. “Stay still, woman,” he declared. “You should know how to behave yourself in situations like this.”“I can handle myself, Bryce! What if you get shot?! Stop putting yourself in danger!”“Are you worried?” he asked. I couldn’t answer so he once again asked: “Are
“Don’t worry, Bryce,” I declared. “I won’t.” I looked him in the eyes. “I will never love you. Ever. That's a promise.”If I was a little doubtful that my hunch was right back then — that there was something wrong about this whole setup — now I am sure of it. There really is something wrong about this. I just can’t figure out what it is. He hugged me tightly making me lose my composure. He kissed my hair and groaned as he rested his head on my neck. I felt like my whole system rambled. Damn! For fuck’s sake, how could he be this intimate after telling me not to fall for him? After telling me that he'll never love me, he'll be this caring and sweet? It doesn’t make any sense to me. He was confusing me.And moreover, he smelled of alcohol as if he just had a drink before coming here. He was too drunk.“I can’t lose you too,” he murmured again. “I just can’t. If I lose you too, it will be the end of me.”I had no idea what he was talking about. It was as if he was seeing me as someone I
Bryce's jaw was clenching as he walked towards the shop from where I was standing. He looked like he was ready to kill someone. His forehead creased and his brows knitted. I know he was cursing underneath his breath based on his angry looks. I just stared at him confusedly. What's up with him now? For him to show such an angry face is quite rare… really rare. I couldn’t even see him frown in the past. I couldn’t even read what was in his mind each time our paths crossed, especially when he was talking to me. He was always emotionless. Nobody was ever able to read what was on his mind and no one had ever made him show emotions. I was so sure of that, so what triggered him to be this angry that he was now showing it?He stood up in front of me after entering the shop. “You didn’t answer my calls.”“Huh?”He sighed. “Check your phone, Leigh.”I looked at my handbag placed on the table a few meters away from me. “My phone’s in my bag,” I answered. I looked at him with my brows furrowed.
