DAMIAN
Sitting alone in my chambers, I poured another glass of whiskey, the amber liquid shimmering under the dim light. I’d lost count of how many drinks I’d had tonight, but the bitterness in my chest wouldn’t go away, no matter how much I tried to drown it. Everything had fallen apart, and I couldn’t figure out where it all went wrong. Evelyn had left a few days ago, saying she was taking a trip with some friends, and I hadn’t heard from her since. Her absence gnawed at me, leaving a hollow space that only made me more suspicious. I needed answers. Why had my plans with the witch been exposed? Who had leaked the secret of my attempt to bring Aurora back? And was Evelyn involved? There could barely be a reason why she had left immediately after we had gotten in touch with the witch. A sharp knock on the door broke through my thoughts, and I looked up, bleary-eyed and irritated. “Come in,” I called out, setting the glass aside and trying to shake off the fog of alcohol. A guard entered, his expression tense. “Alpha Damian, the elders and lords have requested your presence. They are waiting for you in the pack court.” The words sent a cold jolt through me. I had known this was coming. The whispers, and the sidelong glances I’d been getting around the pack during the meetings from the council had been warning enough. The council was ready to make a move, and they wouldn’t be kind. With my Luna gone, they were now going to deem me as incompetent to lead the pack, which does not even make any sense. They needed me to make an heir, so I could wait for my second chance mate. It might take a while but as an alpha, I knew it was going to happen to me eventually. “Very well,” I replied, standing up and adjusting my coat, attempting to pull myself together. I needed to look strong, and in control. This was my pack, and no matter what the council thought, I wouldn’t be undermined. I strode to the court, forcing myself to ignore the pounding in my head. When I arrived, I was greeted by the council members seated in a semicircle, their expressions impatient. Among them, I saw my two half-brothers. Levi and Maddox. They were leaning back in their chairs, identical smirks plastered across their faces. They lived for moments like these, ready to exploit any weakness I showed so they are quick to swoop in and take control of the pack. Levi and Maddox were an unpleasant reminder of my father’s indiscretions, having been married to two women at the same time. The twins were born to another woman during the same week as me. They’d been raised as warriors, training relentlessly before being brought back to the pack when their caretaker passed. A DNA test had confirmed what we’d all feared. They were legitimate heirs, just like me. And from the day they set foot back in the pack, they’d been angling to seize control, waiting for any slip-up to prove I was unfit to lead. I took my place before the council, keeping my expression neutral as the five elders and three lords watched me intently. Four of the council members were women, their gazes sharp. They were even more fierce than the men in the council. As the alpha, they were my sole advisors. Without them, I would be driving the pack to doom. One of the elders, a woman named Marla, leaned forward, her fingers laced together. “Damian,” she said, her tone icy, “how are you faring in your attempt to bring your wife back to the pack?” I clenched my fists as I forced myself to respond evenly without showing them that I was drunk. “I am handling it,” I replied. “I’m doing everything I can.” One of the female lords scoffed, a look of disrespect crossing her face. “An alpha without a Luna is hardly an alpha at all.” A low growl escaped my throat before I could stop it, and I glared at her. “Careful with your words, or I’ll make sure you pay for that disrespect.” Levi leaned forward, his smirk widening as he watched me with mock amusement. “Oh, threatening the council now, are we? You’re only making our job easier, brother.” I glared at him, my blood boiling. He and Maddox had always enjoyed watching me squirm. They were like vultures, circling, waiting for any moment of weakness. And no matter how hard I tried, I could not just take them out of the pack. They were the best warriors we have. They were also great with strategy, given the way they were raised. Since they came to the pack and our father had given them seats on the council of the family business and palace, we had seen an increase in our pack income. Maddox chuckled, crossing his arms. “If you can’t get your Luna back, Damian, maybe it’s time you set aside your whore and start a real family. Restore balance to the pack.” His smirk deepened. “Or we’ll take matters into our own hands.” Anger surged through me, barely containing the urge to wipe those smug smiles off their faces. But I knew that would be exactly what they wanted. Proof that I was out of control, and unfit to lead. I drew a slow breath, forcing myself to stay composed. “My personal life is not your concern. I am the Alpha, and I will handle it.” Levi raised an eyebrow, his tone taunting. “And yet, here we are, questioning your leadership. It seems your choices have consequences, brother.” Before I could respond, the council members shifted in their seats, clearly eager to end the meeting. I had to watch as they each exchanged smug glances, satisfied that they’d rattled me. Finally, the elders and lords gave each other looks, signifying the end of the meeting was near. “We did not come here to hear bickering, we are here to tell you that you need to toughen up and bring back your luna to the pack. We have people that could very easily take your seats and give the pack an heir before the end of the year.” Uncle Jacob, the oldest living member of the council said. He was my father’s cousin. After that, they all stood up and left, leaving me behind. Levi and Maddox lingered a moment longer, enjoying their victory before they, too, left, chuckling as they walked away. I clenched my fists, a surge of fury coursing through me as their laughter echoed in the empty room. As the door closed behind them, I found myself seething. Traitors. All of them. But my anger wasn’t just directed at the council or my brothers. I felt a gnawing suspicion building within me. If the plans with the witch had not been sabotaged, then Aurora would be back here with me and I would have gotten control over this situation. The only person who knew the details of my plans had been Evelyn. She helped me through all of it and left just a day later. That sounds awfully convenient. I stormed out of the pack court, my mind racing. Evelyn had always been ambitious, but I’d trusted her. I’d believed she was on my side. Now I was not so sure anymore. I headed toward Evelyn’s quarters. If she had betrayed me, if she had exposed my plans to Aurora then there would be consequences. When I reached her door, I found it locked, the room empty. My patience wore thin, and I turned on my heel, storming back toward my chambers. I would wait until she returned, and then I would confront her. She couldn’t hide from me forever. Once inside my room, I poured another drink, the alcohol burning as it slid down my throat. I set the glass down, staring at the amber liquid as my anger simmered. Evelyn had been my closest ally, the one person I’d trusted with my plans. But now I wasn’t sure if I could trust anyone. I paced the room, replaying every conversation, and every plan we’d made. I had been willing to go to any lengths to bring Aurora back, to make her pay for leaving. And now, thanks to Evelyn or whoever had betrayed me, everything had been thrown into chaos. The council would be watching my every move now, just waiting for me to stumble. Levi and Maddox would keep circling, eager to take the pack from me. But I wouldn’t let them win. This was my pack. My power. And I would do whatever it took to keep it. As I sat in the dim light, the alcohol did little to dull the throbbing anger in me. I promised myself that I would get to the bottom of this. I would find out who had betrayed me, and they would regret ever crossing me. And as for Evelyn, if she was the one behind this, she would soon learn that betrayal came with a price.AURORA I clutched my diamond emerald necklace on my neck as I felt pain in the lower part of my body. He was doing it again. Damian was cheating on me with his girlfriend Evelyn while I stood there trying to look pretty beside him for the ball. But that was even the least of my concerns, even though I had been married to him for four years and he never attempted to treat me right. I had just found out that my ungrateful and wicked husband had killed my mother. I was not sure of it. I looked at the necklace closely in the mirror. I have owned it for several years but it had never shown me something like this before. When I was getting ready and I was clasping it on my neck, I had a vision and saw Damian standing in front of my mother’s dead body. Could he have really been the one that killed her all those years ago? I could not sit here and continue thinking about it because I was not going to get any answers. I needed to go and ask him. I looked over at the divorce papers
AURORA He looked like he was born of a fruit plucked from Heaven. The man stood way taller than me, and the authority around him was impossible to ignore. He had medium, well styled raven hair. His skin was tanned and the angles of his face were sharp. His chiseled jawline and high cheekbones made him look surreal. His eyes were piercing and green, almost making me tremble in my shoes. Who was this man and why have I never seen him here before? From his well styled and obviously expensive suit, I could tell that he was an important and rich man. “I am so sorry,” he looked down at the spilled wine and then at my clothes. I could not help but notice the little accent in his voice that made my heart flutter. “Come on, let me get you cleaned up.” “No, that is fine.” I called out for one of the waitresses. When she saw the spill, she cleaned it up with some wipes. I did not want water to touch my clothes yet. I was planning to dry clean it to keep the quality intact. “I am so so
DAMIAN “Gosh, you are so perfect.” I whispered to my girlfriend, Evelyn as we left the royal ball. The royal ball’s main purpose was for alliances with other packs that I was not on good terms with. I wanted to cut off that tradition but as much as I hated to admit it, it was very good for creating new allies and new business collaborations. It was easy to ignore my enemies when I had the most beautiful woman in the world by my side. I decided that I wanted to announce my girlfriend to all of them today. I was never going to marry Evelyn and she knew that. Divorcing my mate was going to make me seem weak and that was something I could not afford right now, especially with some of my half-brothers who wanted the throne for themselves even though I was the heir. As the alpha, I could have as many women as I wanted even when I was married or mated. Aurora was forced to marry me because of some mate bond between us that I did not even care about. It was almost hilarious because th
AURORA We got on the way and three hours later, we arrived at Ethan’s pack. The massive gates opened to reveal a sprawling landscape unlike anything I’d ever seen. Ethan slowed the car, glancing over at me with a reassuring smile.“Welcome to Blackwater, Aurora,” he said softly. I took in the sight before me. The towering trees, lush greenery, and rows of beautiful old buildings were very different from the kinds we had back in my pack. It was different in a good way, or maybe I felt that was because I was finally away from Damian. Everything felt peaceful to me. I was so glad I made this decision. When he stopped the car, a guard stepped forward and opened the door for me. I smiled at him, whispering some words of gratitude before I got down. Ethan passed over the key to another guard who was going to park the car. He came beside me as we walked into the palace. “Take a moment to settle in. You can make yourself comfortable here, Aurora. I’ll come back soon to introduce you to ev
AURORAWe spent the next few minutes there, just enjoying the view and when the sun eventually went down, we decided to go back into the pack. I was exhausted and needed to sleep. Ethan led me down a grand hallway lined with portraits. Each of them was perfectly crafted, and I could tell that they cost a lot of money. I like to paint so I would probably like to remake the portraits in my free time.“I want you to meet my mother,” he said, glancing at me as we headed back to my quarters, which was close to his. “And don’t worry. She is well… she’s got her opinions, but she means well.”I nodded, trying to calm the flutter in my stomach. Meeting his mother seemed like a monumental step, even if I kept reminding myself this was just a temporary arrangement. Still, I couldn’t ignore the slight anxiety gnawing at me. After what had happened with Kiara, I was afraid that I was going to find one more person here who hated me. I was not new to people disliking me, but for some reason I wante
DAMIANI sat alone in my room, anger and resentment simmering like fire under my skin. I have never been this angry in my life. Everything I have always wanted had come to me with ease. Women, money, the crown of my pack. This felt like a huge slap to my face. The thought of Aurora leaving and rejecting me stirred something deep and ugly within. I’d never felt so betrayed, so abandoned. She had the audacity to leave, and for what? To go to that pretender, Ethan Grey. My fists clenched involuntarily. If only she knew the type of man he was. Now that she was gone with him, all I could think about was how to rescue her. I have made mistakes in the past, dammit, but she was making an even worse mistake leaving with him. He was the enemy of the pack for a damn reason. As I brooded, the door creaked open, and Evelyn stepped in. Her soft, delicate presence which was usually soothing felt wrong. I had never felt like I wanted to be away from her until now. She crossed the room and sat beside
AURORA Every day in Blackwater felt like walking through a circus, only that I was the one being showcased. The stares, the whispers, the looks of barely concealed suspicion were something I couldn’t escape daily. It seemed like everyone in the pack had something against me. And though I tried to brush it off, the weight of their judgment was slowly eating me up inside. I wondered if they were really doing all of this because they were wary of me or because there was something else. How did all of them know so fast that I was from their enemy pack? I knew some of the people from this pack came to my pack for college and I do not see them getting treated like that. I wanted answers to why I was treated this way so badly that I was desperate. Ethan had told me I’d be safe here, that this could be a fresh start, but so far, it felt anything but welcoming. This morning, as I walked through the palace, a small group of maids stopped talking as I passed, their conversation shifting to low
AURORANight came not long after that and I lay to sleep, but it did not come, so I did not sleep. Morning came by so slowly. When the morning sunlight eventually streamed through my window, I felt a pang of frustration. I didn’t want to face anyone today. Especially not Ethan. I had trusted him, and believed that he was different, yet he had hidden something so big from me. There was something fishy in everything that was going on. I should have thought of that before I left my pack with him. I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling a mix of hurt and anger still bubbling inside of me. Even if he had meant well, which I was sure he did not, he should have told me. That was the least he could have done to me.A soft knock at the door interrupted my thoughts. “Come in,” I muttered, pulling myself up into a sitting position.Jada entered, carrying a small bag with neatly folded clothes. “Good morning, Luna,” she greeted softly. “I brought you some fresh clothes.”I forced a smile.
