She clenched her fist as the cool air inside the cave caressed her chin. The lady was right, the hijab made her feel warm. The woman who’s name she still doesn’t know pointed her finger at a fire in the middle of the cave. A man can be seen sitting in front of the fire. His hands softly dancing in the air, and out of it, tiny sand dusts began to form into various forms.
It created miniature form of animals, trees, mountains and even the rivers and the seas. Then, he waived his hands, and everything disappeared.
The man slowly stood up and walked into the entryway of the cave. They followed him, welcomed by the cool breeze of the desert.
The stars were ecstatically bright that night, and all Charlie could ever do was admire in silence. She has never been anywhere outside of her own apartment or the university’s premise.
She used to dream of being able to travel even just for studies, but she never had the chance. And now, she’s in the middle of the desert, said to be during the 24th century. And a mysterious woman is the only one who has taken her out of her comfort zone.
They were standing at a not too close distance from where the man is standing.
“Now we can talk.” the lady whispered.
“Who is that?”
“My creator.”
“You mean--?”
The lady nodded.
For the first time in her life, she gasped the site of the one man she’d never expect to meet, well, watch from a distance at least. But this is the generation of creation.
The next thing she sees is how two forms started to appear from the clay that in front of him.
In her eyes, appeared the form of an angel and on the other side, a demon.
“Look at that, isn’t it wonderful?”
“It is.” She gazed at the sight of two creatures taking flight out into the horizon. “Any man on Earth would have wanted to see this moment. The creation of all things living on earth.
A few moments after the two entities flew, his hands danced against the cool air once again, collecting a surge of wind, almost creating a quiet tornado.
And in another sway of his hands, another form was made.
“What is that?”
“That my Dear, is my ancestor.”
the wind simply molded into almost the same as with the angels and the demons that flew away, only, its head was also forming a horn.
She twitched her head sideways and wondered why it looked so strange.
“Just so you know, Adam and Eve were not even made yet.”
“Oh...”
“This is the time of creation of anything that people think is uncertain in this world.”
The wind that formed started to fly away just like the two creatures.
“This is awesome.”
“Let’s go!”
“Wait.”
“We can’t stay for too long. Let’s go.” She clapped her hand twice and the door reappeared in front of her.
Charlie was hesitant to leave, but she must follow whatever the lady says. Or else, she could get herself in trouble.
They stepped back into the door and was once again back into her huge house.
Everything she just witnessed is literally taking her breath away.
“What just happened?”
She heard the lady flick her fingers together again and she was back in her own clothes.
“See, it could have been so easy.”
“Again, you needed to experience it. Now, where were we. Right. Come along.”
She followed her like she was puppy eager to follow its owner. Her curiosity is defeating her senses. This woman is not kidding and as much as she’d want to not believe her, she just can’t.
They ended in front of a huge double door, and swing it open as wide as she can.
The aroma of old and new books combined attacked her senses like never before.
She was led into the biggest library she would ever imagine. It was as huge as the roman church, and she could barely count the books that filled it.
Everywhere she turns, there are books that she would not even imagine reading in her entire life. On the edge of each bookshelf are paintings she’d only heard about in movies and art history.
She stopped in front of a huge painting that caught her attention. No one would not recognize that face. The face that confused people in so many levels.
“Hold on, is that---”
“What?” the lady came back to where she was standing and look up at the same painting she was looking at.
“Oh.. The Mona Lisa.”
“Is that the real one?” she wondered in amazement.
“Well, yes.”
“But isn’t the original located in Paris?”
“That is the second canvass Leo painted on with the same woman.”
“What? And wait, you call him Leo?”
“Yes, I do. Oh, you are so easy to please. It amuses me. Well, he basically had two other people paint the Mona Lisa. It was their attempt to keep a copy of the painting. One was made by his trusted assistant and the other is by his lover. This one… is the canvass made by his dearest lover.”
“Please don’t tell me you were his lover.”
“Oh no. He wasn’t my type. His lover however was who I liked. So...”
“What? Wait…” she catches up with the woman while constantly catching her breath as well, “So if you’ve met his lover, how long have you’ve been alive then?”
“Hmmm. I actually lost count after my 50th thousand birthdays. So, I can’t give you an exact number.”
“Holy shit!”
“Language please.”
“Wait so, you’re a Jinni that doesn’t live in a lamp. You’ve been alive for a very long time; you can transport through time. I have so many questions.”
“Well, I know. You see, when he created the world, he also created three basic entities before humanity. As you’ve seen a while ago, the angels, the demons and us Jinni’s. But unlike the angels and the demons, we were made from thin air. By then, he didn’t have an actual image to replicate. So, he created us into something that could transform to anything. But we were the closest creatures just before humans, intended to never choose sides and to be on neutral grounds as always.”
“So, you don’t grant wishes then?”
“Oh we do. Only we don’t do it for those who captured our lamps. Like what everyone knows.”
“So how does one qualify for those wishes?”
She suddenly turned around and faced her.
“First of all, there can only be one wish. One great desire that you have. And we grant it to chosen lonely souls.”
“What? Damn Disney! Ohhh... Ohhh... do you ride magic carpets?”
“No, we don’t but I guess I can make it possible.”
“That’s a bummer. So you don’t get to be anyone’s slaves in exchange for three wishes?”
“No we don’t. We’re very sane individuals and we don’t have to be anyone’s slave. But we do ask something in return.”
“In return for what? Wait, where are we going? This hallway does not seem to end.”
She found herself bumping against the lady’s back when she stopped suddenly. Right in front of them is another sleek door, located at a very distinct corner in that hallway.
“A portion of someone’s memory.”
“Memory?”
“Yes. Memory.” She then swings open the door and stepped into a room filled with transparent jars.
“Woooahhhh.” Her eyes grew wide in amazement. Each jars had bright colorful lights dancing around, “What are those?”
“Those are the memories of every person granted with a wish.”
“Wow. Wait. So, if you hypothetically grant me a wish, you will then take a portion of my memory?”
“Hypothetically, yes.”
“No way.”
“But they must be expensive memories. And before we take it, we ask them to sign a very detailed contract, each tailored to their wish and the memory that they trade in.”
“So, you do trade.”
“Yes, but not with you and certainly not my name.”
“So why are you telling me all of this?”
“Because you my dear, will soon be insignificant.”
“What do you mean?”
The lady simply smirked and turned her back away from her.
“You’re not gonna answer that too. Well, then what do you do with all those memories?”
“I eat them.”
A chilling feeling started to creep her.
“Scared now?”
“No.”
“Let’s go.”
She stepped back outside the room once again and closed it behind her.
The lady faced her while they were still in front of the door.
“Now, everything that I have told you today is a secret that you must keep. Do you understand?”
“Yes I. And please you don’t have to worry. I can keep a secret.”
“Oh, I don’t doubt that.”
The lady leads her back again to the ground floor until the main door.
“Wait, why are you pushing me out the door? I still have questions.”
“I know, but that’s all the time I have for you today. Now, remember this, the chosen once will be the only once who will get to come back here.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You’ll know soon enough, or never. But I will only appear when your mind will allow you.”
“You sound strange. Wait. Can I come back here though?”
“Yes, you can. I will be here waiting.”
“Great! I’ll see you again tomorrow. But thank you again. For all the things that you have done to me.”
The lady smiled as though already expecting her gratitude.
“I will see you soon, Charlie.”
Charlie nodded and excitedly walked out of the gate and was even hopping as she treaded the sidewalk.
After a few minutes, she stopped and looked around her.
“How did I get here?” she turned around, trying to know if the place was familiar, “Huh, I must have been lost. Uggghhh. This is silly. Oh,” she turned to her watch and realized that her class is about to start, “I’m gonna be late.”
Names, characters, business, events and incidents are the products of the author's imagination. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
She’s been bored or the entire week that has passed. So far, no man was walking up to her unexpectedly just to force her to pay for the money she owed. She wonders what happened to them. They were waiting for their professor to arrive when she decided to lay her head on top of the table while playing with her pen. She has not started even a single line of the book that she wanted to write. Her professor is pissed off, yet she can’t force herself to write anything. Her pen twirls around as she plays with it. It took five minutes of playing before her professor came in and handed bunch of booklets to one student asking him to distribute it to the entire class. A red covered book laid flat on her desk. “Unpopular legends.” She read it softly. She flipped the pages of the book and thought there must be about a hundred pages. She turned to the first page and saw the table of contents. “Welcome, today we will be talking about some of the most underrated legends of all time. For the e
She was dozing off while in her class, she stayed up all night just because she can’t stop thinking about what Alvah said. The aftermath of all the memories that has come back to her was overwhelming her again. But she couldn’t help herself from smiling. After everything, she remembered her again. And she’d like to believe that the idea of her remembering her again is something special. And now, she’s on her way to learn how to become a Jinni herself. “Miss Peddington!” Her professor’s voice startled her that she almost fell from her seat. “You’re daydreaming again.” “I’m sorry. I was just thinking about my—” she looked around noticing that everyone was now looking at her conspicuously, “my story draft.” She sees her professor crossing his arms against his chest, now getting his attention. “Well, I’d be very interested to know what you have already made. You’ve been quiet a procrastinator lately.” “Well,” she twitched her head sideways, not expecting the kind of question her p
She switched the lights on as she skippered through the library once again. She’s been in that library for almost a week now. Each time, the books are added up with more and more. She wanted to just throw the white flag and end her suffering. This was not leading to anything useful for her at all. What good does reading books give you? And how is it even helpful to someone who’s studying to become a jinni? Do jinni’s teach subjects? “No, but it keeps them grounded, helps them be smart about all the thing that they do.” He heart skipped a beat the moment she heard Alvah’s voice who was now just standing behind her. “You startled me! Please don’t do that again.” “Well, how are you with all the readings?” “I’m great!” she faked a smile as she proceeded on opening another page with the book she was currently reading. It was the story of Jane Austen. A very well know artist during the 18th century. “Well, you’re reading Jane Austen. That’s interesting. She is interesting. More so wa
She’s been awake for 19 hours, reading through every page of the books right in front of her. She didn’t notice the time anymore, yet she knows she’s been having progress. And while she was consumed by what she was doing, she realized how much she’s been missing. There were so many things to learn. So many words to discover and all throughout, she didn’t exactly think that reading was a useful tool. She’s almost done, two more books before she could truly say she’s finished the task given to her. When the final page of the current book was done, she heaved a happy sigh as she turned to the next book. This one is thicker than the usual book she has read. It’s also bigger yet majestically intrinsic from the cover to the edges of each page. In the cover was a circular artifact that looked like a knob. Her curiosity once again got the best of her. She tried to turn it around, hoping that she could miraculously make it work. In an instant, she felt a quick prick against her palm that
She shut the door close, gasping for air. A dinosaur was just going after her. Leaning on the door, she catches up her breath and tried to relax.“Did you get it?” Alvah leaned over to her, leveling on her face. She held her hand holding a bone she caught from the Jurassic era. Alvah smiled the moment she sees the piece of bone she gathered from a dead Othnielia. “Those ones are really hard to track.” “I know right.” She scurries towards her craft room. Charlie instantly stood up and followed her. She’s been training as her apprentice for two weeks now. And all she could say is that apart from all the adventures, she’s exhausted by the end of the day with all the things that Alvah just seems to randomly ask her to do. She’s grabbing a piece of bone from the Jurassic era today, the other day, she needed to work her ay out of the deadliest jungle she’s ever been to. All these things do not make sense to her. She learned that part of the things that Alvah can do is to create a po
They arrived back at the mansion with her consistently teasing Alvah of how she acted around the Italian guy. “So, wait, you’ve been going to his store every day and you didn’t even invite him to any dinner or brunch?” “Charlie, that is so inappropriate.” “There’s nothing inappropriate with a woman who asks the man she likes out. It’s empowering. It means you don’t hesitate; you go for what you want, and, in this generation, you should be an empowered woman.” She speaks while placing all the things they’ve shopped for in the long table. “That is highly unlikely.” “Oh, so don’t tell me that the mighty and powerful Alvah does not know how to be confident enough to ask someone out? Do you want me to ask him for you?” “Don’t you dare.” “Well, I mean, I could be your bridge if you want.” “No.” “Okay.” After helping Alvah fix up everything she bought, Charlie grabbed her take out bag and headed for the door. “Are you sure you don’t want my help?” “Go home Charlie.” “Okay. By the
She looked up at the beauty of the chandelier right above her head. Alvah took her to one of the most beautiful mansions she has ever seen from twenty years back. She thought they’d be visiting a place that’s just of the same year. “Alvah...” she whispered. “Yes?” “I thought we’re going into a gathering of Jinni’s?” “We are. This is the last gathering of all the Jinni’s on earth.” “The last?” “Yes.” She looked around and noticed how the living room seemed so quiet. She sees no one as they ascended the stairs. The time travel they did was long and exhausting, but perhaps because of the elixir she took just this morning, she wasn’t feeling squeezy anymore. Unlike the previous travels they’ve done to accomplish parts of her training. As soon as they were on the top of the staircase, they were welcomed by a long hallway. At the end of it was a door with two guards waiting. She noticed Alvah taking off the hood of the white cloak she’s wearing, and she did the same. The theme was
She’s running across a huge field, the sun is scorching hot, and the air seems to be suffocating her. Someone’s following her. It was as if she’s back to the day when someone was always trying to catch her. She started treading the steep grounds, hoping that she doesn’t fall into the edge of the elevated place she’s trying to climb up. But just as that thought was in her mind, she stumbled into a rock and fell right into the ground. She had no way of controlling how she’s rolling downwards. Then a loud thump made her open her eyes. A sharp pin started to attack her from her back. She groaned as she realizes that she fell right into the mansion’s floor. “Well, that surely woke you up.” She turned to the woman whose body was splayed all over the love sofa across her. “Were you watching me sleep?” she struggled to stand up. “Yes. I wanted to know how long you’ll be knocked off.” “Knocked off? Wait, how long was I out?” “About fifteen hours.” Alvah says as she looked at her watch
Charlie stood still, facing a noodle house where Spencer was happily talking with one of the servers. She seemed entranced by him, as anyone would be. But as she saw them having so much fun talking to each other, she felt a sudden feeling of pain inside her.Is this the reality that Alvah wanted her to see? That he belongs to someone else. She closed her eyes, wanting not to feel this sudden pain that’s attacking her. She took a step back, gave a very good thought of what’s happening and snapped her finger once.As soon as she did, she was transported to another year. A year in her mind where she thinks she’d be. It was twenty years after the year she was in with Spencer. And about five years from her actual present year. She’s led to a huge house the looked to be situated in a suburban area. The corners are filled with flowers and some plants, the windows looked colorful with curtains adorning each one. In a few minutes, the crisp crying sound of a baby filled the entire house. She sm
She realized that they had overstayed now, Alvah was sitting inside a coffee shop when Spencer and some of his friends passed by. She wanted to call him but just a few steps from where they were was a group of guys who seemed to be waiting for Spencer’s group to come pass by them. Spencer was with two of his friends while the group of men was about five or six people. They look like they play football too, only from a different team. As they were nearing, the group of white men started blocking their way. Alvah stood up and left some cash for her bill and a tip. Once outside, she came closer to where the two groups were and decided to eavesdrop for a bit. "Hey, how did those bruises feel? Still not doing anything about what I told you?""Spencer, do you know them?" one of Spencer's friend, huge guy with a really good built spoke out. "They're no one. Come on, let's keep going.""We're not done." The guy turned aggressive as he pulled Spencer away from his group and pushed him ri
Her days were filled with joy as she kept living in that year. She didn’t want to admit it, and yet she knew she was starting to fall in love with him. She goes to every game he has, cheers for him, enjoys the people cheering and constantly gives him a kiss with every win. The only thing she didn’t like about all of it was the fact that they would have to hide. That generation was not a huge fan of interracial relationships. And she would never do anything that could possibly hurt or compromise him. So, no matter how challenging it was, she needed to keep hiding, for him. “Well, that was a great game, wasn’t it?” she beamed against him as they sat still in the open field. He was staring at the moon, getting nostalgic of the win that they just had. She looked at him with adoring eyes, his skin looking good against the light of the moon in the sky. The feelings he brought her were one of a kind. One’s that she’d never wish of having. “It was… It just felt good.” He turned to her
She was fidgeting as she sat in one corner of the bleachers. Alvah was seated beside her and she couldn’t stop but admire her fashion. She has always worn the most fascinating outfits ever, no matter the generation.Charlie was feeling nervous. Her heart was beating twice its normal beat and she didn’t even know how that was possible. Or even how it’s possible that she could define that it was already beating twice the normal rate. In a few minutes, the football players entered the field, each team introduced their players and people inside the arena started going wild.In a moment, Charlie felt her heart leap at the sight of the man she just met that morning. For some odd reason, she could not fathom the kind of beating he brought to her.It was an ecstatically strange feeling she isn’t willing to welcome. He was included in the first line up and she noticed how most of the people within the bleachers seem to have high regards for him.Spencer. That was what’s written on the boards
She stood in the bleachers of a huge football ground. This is her 8th wish. Soon enough, she will complete her 10th and will know what it truly means to be a full pledged Jinni.“Why are we here?” she asks shaking her head. She’s never been a fan of football. She thinks it’s gruesome and dangerous. But people seem to have an enormous fondness for the game. Some would even go to the extent of fighting against friends just to prove how supportive they are with their friends.Perhaps it happens in every kind of sports.Alvah opens her red umbrella and sat right into an empty section of the bleachers.Below them is a group of uniformed players looking a lot like soldiers, readying themselves for the next battle. They were in the year 1977. One of the most memorable years of the football history.“Is this where I’ll find my next wish?”“Possibly.”“Love the color of that umbrella. You seem to really like red, don’t you? It seems to fill most of your wardrobe.”“I love it. It’s the color of
“Lancelot!”He turns to the voice that’s calling his name.“Headmaster. What can I do for you today?”Lance is clad in his usual Jinni look with a satin pants and red sash tied in his waist. In the new generation, Jinni’s have become more and more fashionable. The unique ones have mostly made an impact on the style of clothing that everyone is wearing.“I wanted to know how your mission is going. Do you think we’ll make it?” The headmaster is Charlie’s appointed leader for the school of Jinni’s. In the future, Jinni’s has evolved far more from what humans have known. They have become and entirely different entity.Their role has expanded and have maintained the balance of the universe. Each Jinni’s are taught how to carry on wishes of not just the lost souls but even the innocent children. Everyone is given tasks that fits them.“I am getting agitated. But Rory seems to have things under control.”Rory is his father, Charlie’s husband in this future. But Charlie doesn’t know it. She d
“It’s impossible. No one has ever done that before.” Alvah kept pacing back and forth. Mr. Bailey was sitting beside Charlie as she laid on the couch unconscious.“Perhaps he’s one of the unique ones.” Mr. Bailey was staring at her, looking like he’s too afraid for her to get away from his sight.“I know. But no one has ever stopped time. It’s unheard of. This is something else. She is more than just the unique ones.”Mr. Bailey recalled how the future has identified the unique ones. The ones whose powers as Jinni’s are unheard of. The ones who qualified to become the guardians of all the Jinni’s. As time grew, Jinni’s in the future has become more and more diverse. And it was what Charlie preserved in the future. But he can’t tell Alvah about it. As far as he knows, she no longer exists in the future that Charlie created. Her knowing now will not be a good thing. But he recalled how Charlie has sent him out to this part of the past. She said he had to go back.Could it be that Alvah
“Charlie! Wake up! Wake up!” she could hear the muffled voice calling her, tugging her that forced her to open her eyes slowly. What welcomed her was a huge array of fire. She tried looking for the voice, but no one was there. The place looked unfamiliar and all she could do was stare out at the entire space. The fire is slowly eating up the place.“Help! Alvah!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. The fire was too big that visibility is impossible. She tried to take a step but her fear took a toll and all she could do was breath heavily. “Help! Please! Help me! Alvah! Alvah!”Some debris started to fall off the floor and one of them was about to fall right through her. She pulled her arms over her head, thinking she could cover herself from the harm that’s about to come. And then, she opened her eyes again. The room has now changed. She’s back in Alvah’s library. She took deep heavy breaths and looked around. There was no fire. Nothing. The whole place looked as serene as it has al
“Days here feels like years, doesn’t it?” she turns to Alvah as they sat in front of the huge yard looking out at Leo and his two assistants painting out the garden’s view. Each had different styles but are required to create the same piece. And each of them took interesting strokes to a different level. “Look at them, creating perfection. While we,” she looks at Alvah, “are frying up ourselves under this heat. When we get back to our generation, we’d already be like sunny side up eggs.” “You worry too much. Just enjoy the sun. We don’t always get this kind of heat. Plus, its healthy to the skin.” “Right.” In a bit, a sudden sound of crashing things was heard. Salai’s entire canvass was no on the ground while Leo was facing him fuming with anger. They could barely hear what they were talking about but she and Alvah began standing up, curious to know what is going on. But just as they were on their feet, Salai hurriedly walked away from where they were just painting. Charlie fol
