Awakened From Death
《ほらな？俺は浮気なんかしてなかっただろ？》
耳元で囁かれたその声に、高村遥（たかむら はるか）はハッとして目を見開いた。馴染み深くて、懐かしくて、もう何百回も聞いた声だ。
次の瞬間、法廷に響いたのは、裁判長の判決だった。
「被告人・朝比奈美月に対し、懲役十五年を言い渡す」
静寂の中、木槌の音が鈍く響いた。誰も動かない。誰も声を出さない。被告席の女は、虚ろな目で前を見つめたまま、何かを失ったように項垂れた。
結審。
ーー六年前に夫・悠真（ゆうま）が刺されて死んでから、遥はこの日を待ち続けていた。
あの日から、彼は幽霊になって彼女の傍に現れた。最初は錯覚かと思った。だが、声も、姿も、はっきりと見えた。むしろ、生きていた頃よりも近くにいた。
泣く夜も、怒る日も、息が詰まるほど苦しい時間も、悠真はそばにいた。
言い争うこともあった。ふと笑い合うこともあった。
……まるで、生きているみたいに。
被告の女・朝比奈美月は、夫の勤めていた会社の部下だった。
供述によれば、二人は不倫関係にあり、もつれからの殺意だったという。最初に報道されたその内容を、世間は信じた。
「社内不倫」
「愛人関係のもつれ」
どのワイドショーも、そんな見出しばかりを並べた。
そして――遥自身も、ほんのわずかに信じかけた。
悠真は学生の頃、女癖が悪かった。
結婚してからは落ち着いたように見えても、心のどこかで「また繰り返すんじゃないか」と疑ってしまった。
幽霊となって戻ってきた彼が、何度「違う」と言っても、その声を信じきれなかった。
今日の判決で、それがすべて妄想だったと明らかになった。
朝比奈美月の供述は虚偽。実際には交際の事実など一切なく、一方的な思い込みによる犯行だった。社内で少し言葉を交わしただけの相手に、女は恋をし、勝手に関係を作り上げて、そして――殺した。
遥は唇を震わせ、ハンカチを取り出して口元を押さえた。
「……ごめんなさい、あなた」
疑ってしまった。信じているふりをしながら、心の奥では否定していた。ほんとうは、最期まで信じるべきだったのに。
そのときだった。
ふっと、右肩に重みが乗る。手のひらのような感触。確かに、そこに“彼”がいた。見なくてもわかる。いつもそうだった。その存在に包まれるようにして、遥はそっと目を伏せた。
「……大丈夫？」
左側から低く優しい声がかかった。
黒川湊。遥の幼なじみであり、彼女が今働いている猫カフェの店主だ。
「……うん」
遥がそう答えたときだった。
右肩の重みが、ふっと消えた。まるで空気に溶けるように、何もなかったかのように。
（あ……）
思わず視線を彷徨わせる。
けれど姿は見えない。
それでも、また現れる。遥はそう思った。
この六年間、どんなときも、彼は傍にいたのだから。急にいなくなるはずがない。そう自分に言い聞かせるように、遥は深く息を吸い込んだ。
「行こう」
湊が先に立ち上がり、遥もゆっくりと席を立つ。
法廷の扉が開くと、冬の冷たい風が吹き込んできた。どこかで雨が降り始めたらしい。二人は並んで歩き出す。小さな駅に向かう石畳の道を、沈黙のまま。
背中に感じたあたたかさだけが、まだかすかに残っていた。
