Katherine remembered the place vaguely. But she could remember everything about the day Nile's father humiliated her.
They walked until they came up to a big glass door with wooden panels.“Timothy will be excited to see you guys,” Deborah beamed as she turned the knob and opened the door. “Timothy darling, look who is here to see you.”Mr. O'Hare gasped when he looked up and saw Katherine and the others. “Wha... Wha..,” he coughed as he struggled to speak.“Now, now, sweetheart. Don't be flustered,” Deborah said as she grabbed a bottle of water and raised it to her husband's mouth. He gulped down the water and took a deep breath.“What is Katherine doing here?” He questioned.“She's here to see you.” Deborah answered.“Look, Mr. O'Hare,” Katherine began. “I don't understand why you're surprised. I got the letter from your lawyer stating that you needed to see me.”“What? I didn't send any letter,” he answered. Katherine’s eyes landed on Deborah who looked guilty of the crime.“It was me. I sent it,” Deborah confessed.“Why would you do that?” Timothy bellowed, then begin to cough again.A lady dressed in a nurse's uniform entered the room. “Alright, everyone out,” she ordered as she placed her stethoscope on his chest and began examining him.Katherine, Taryn, and the children walked out of the chamber.“Mom, this is so awkward,” whispered Nola.“I knew they wouldn’t like us,” stated Nate. “When can we leave?”“No one is leaving,” Deborah declared as she came up from behind them.“Look, Mrs. O'Hare, I know you meant well, but this was a bad idea,” Katherine began.“Just give me a few minutes, Katherine. I'll be right back,” she added as she rushed back into the room, leaving Katherine and the others behind.Katherine sat in silence and disbelief in the sitting area of the mansion. How could Deborah put on such a-rouse knowing that Mr. O'Hare didn't like or approve of anything she did? In all honesty, Mr. O'Hare partially blamed Katherine for the death of her son. For years that was the case, and Katherine almost blamed herself, too.Mr. O'Hare was not pleased to see her, and his disbelief was evident. Even on his sickbed, there was something domineering about him. Katherine looked over at the large couch to see what her children were doing. Nola was tapping away on her phone, while Nate was nodding and bopping his head to whatever song he was listening to on his phone. Taryn sat opposite Katherine with eyes trained as if waiting to see what her next move will be.The door to the sitting room creaked open and Deborah entered. “He wants to see the children,” she smiled.“Do you think that's a good idea?” Katherine asked as she stood. “I would rather not make things more uncomfortable or worse. I didn’t mean to upset Mr. O'Hare.”“Trust me, Katherine, things can only get better,” she almost grinned.“Well, I am coming with them,” Katherine said as she gestured for the kids to come to her.“I will wait out here, Kat,” Taryn said.“Alright,” Kat responded before ushering Nate and Nola to walk behind their grandmother. They entered the room where Mr. O'Hare was in, and he sat up in his bed immediately. With his hands outstretched he gestured to the children. “Come and let me have a good look at you two.”Nate and Nola glanced at their mother, who gave them a reassuring nod. They walked slowly towards the bed. Mr. O'Hare then took both of their hands in his and looked at them from head to toe. About thirty seconds flew by before a loud sob escaped the old man's mouth. He then gave his grandkids a warm embrace.“What's wrong?” Deborah queried as she rushed to her husband.“How could I have been so foolish? I missed out on the chance of forming a bond with my two grand children. All in the name of vanity.” He sobbed. “Now seeing them, they are both the splitting image of my son. I was a fool, and I was wrong for what I did."It was obvious that the children were uncomfortable, so Katherine walked over to them.“Please Katherine, I know I don't deserve any kindness from you, but I humbly ask for your forgiveness,” he said looking at Katherine.Katherine saw the pain and anguish in the eyes of the sickly man. She also noticed the compassion in the eyes of her children, who were still holding on to their grandfather. She was a woman with a kind, loving and forgiving heart. She believed in a higher being and that karma is real. All her life she had been doing her best to do good, so that good will follow her. It took her nothing to forgive Mr. O'Hare.“Nile always believed in forgiveness, and we were soul mates. I will honour him by forgiving you for all the wrongs you've done to me.” She stated.“Thank you, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you, Katherine,” Mr. O'Hare said.Just then, the door flew open and Violet stepped inside along with their lawyer. The lawyer walked up to Mr. O’Hare’s bed and handed him some files. “I came here as soon as I got the call,” the lawyer stated.Mr. O’Hare signed his signature on the documents.“What's all this, Daddy?” Violet asked.“Katherine has made me the happiest man. I can now go in peace. But before I go, I have some news to share about the inheritance,” Mr. O’Hare smirked at his daughter. He loved Violet with all his heart, but the woman was a lazy, no good princess whose only talent is to spend his money.Violet was now excited because she knew she was going to get what she's been waiting for. Mr. O'Hare placed the papers he just signed inside of a large envelope. “Here I have the deed and licence to the Café and summer cottage.” Violet grinned from ear to ear, while Katherine and the others just stood and listen. “I have willed them to my two grand children, Nathan and Nola O'Hare,” he finished. In shock, Katherine and the children’s mouth flew open. Violet's mouth also flew open, but she was not only in shock but the anger and disappointment she felt was raging inside her heart. “What?” Violet questioned. “I must be losing my hearing. Daddy, what did you just say?”“I said my grandchildren will inherit the Café and the summer cottage.” He confirmed.“So we are rich?” Asked Nathan.“We are already rich, stupid,” Nola scolded.“But now we are like rich, rich, rich, rich,” he grinned. Nola rolled her eyes and looked at her mother.“Look, I don't even know what to say, Mr. O'Hare. All of this is a bit too much to process right now,” Katherine finally spoke.“I know this is a lot to process, Ms. Katherine,” Timothy stated. “But it is deserving. My son loved that Café, and it was a part of him while growing up. It would have been his, so it is only fitting that it is handed down to his children.”“We are so grateful. Nile would love this,” Katherine thanked him.Violet shouted. “Unbelievable!” So loudly that Taryn rushed to knock on the door. Violet walked over and pulled it open.Taryn was standing with a bewildered look on her face. “Is everything alright, Katherine?” She asked as she stood in the doorway.“Yes, yes it is,” she smiled, “It's more than alright.”Mr. O’Hare spoke again. “Would you all excuse us, my wife and I need to have a little chat with our daughter.”“No problem Mr O’Hare,” Katherine smiled.“Please, Katherine we’re all family here. How about from now on you call me Timothy.”Katherine smiled sweetly as she, Taryn and her children exited the bedroom.Aiden Windsor stood before his large vanity mirror while he got dressed for a very important meeting. A meeting that he had been dreading. He was a busy man who didn't have time to stray from his job or his clients. But after putting off this meeting twice before, he just couldn't do so a third time. It wouldn’t look professional on his part. He threw on a white long-sleeved dress shirt and began to do the buttons. When he reached halfway, he paused and assessed his body. His eyes made contact with the scar that held so many memories. He used the tip of his fingers and began tracing the outline of the scar, which was like a small map of his past. Most people would feel ashamed to have a scar marring their body, but Aiden felt a sense of pride and honour to wear this scar that saved his life. He called it a badge of honour. He then remembered the letter that had been sitting in his drawer for more than two years. Every time he thought he had the courage to open it, he was proven wron
Katherine was now acclimated into her new job and surrounding. She decided to keep the Café, but she added a small bakery that would supply her and the community with delectable treats. It also served as a means of employment for neighborhood folks. Three months of success and she felt good about the changes she made. But she still felt like something was missing. One evening after work, she called Taryn, who was now running the bakery she left back in Wisconsin. "Hey, how was today?" Katherine questioned. Taryn chuckled before answering. "It's the same as yesterday and the day before, and the day before that." "So all is well?" Katherine asked. "Yes, Kat, all is well.""Okay good." "Kat, is something bothering you?," Taryn asked, as if she sensed the tension through the phone. "I ju..., I just," before Katherine could finish the sentence, she burst out in tears. "Oh no, Kat, what's wrong? Are the kids okay?""They are fine," she sobbed. " I just feel overwhelmed with everythi
Aiden was on his way to work. He wanted to reach at least two hours earlier than usual so that he could check the computers in his building to see if anyone was involved in this Ponzi scheme. He sat in the back of his limousine, busy returning emails and text messages while his driver Fabian took him to work. It was 6:05 am and Katherine got up and decided to take a run to clear her mind before starting her busy day, she also thought that it was about time she started taking care of herself more for the sake of her children, and exercise was the way to start. She knew she had to do something to take her mind off of her doomed love life and work and exercise always helped other people, so she figured she’d give it a try too.She had been running for around half an hour, when she reached the park. There was an enormous oak tree where she stopped and decided to do some stretches. Her muscles were already sore because they weren’t used to these vigorous activities. She was halfway throug
The next day, Katherine went to work and was ready to start her day off with an enthusiastic attitude. She hoped and prayed that today would be an excellent day. She felt confident that her business would get a head start in sales. It had made headlines on a local blogging site on the internet. It only had around one hundred followers, but you had to start somewhere. She was checking on her order requests for the day when one of her employees approached her. “Good morning Miss. Riley,” the petite redhead said. “Good morning, Lexie, what's up?” “Well we are short-staffed today since Vicky, Matthew, Clem, Ryan, and Anthony are out with the flu.” “What? You've got to be kidding me.” Katherine said in disbelief. “Not at all. They all tried calling you, but your phone went straight to voicemail,” Lexie stated. “My phone died last midnight and I haven't checked my messages.” “Oh I see. Don't worry, though, we can handle today by ourselves,” Lexie smiled. Katherine was in a p
Katherine arrived at Windsor Corp and parked in the car lot. She took a deep breath before grabbing the orders she redid and exited the vehicle. She hoped that this would change the disgruntled customer’s mind about leaving her a bad review. Her business was new and this could ruin its chances of becoming successful. She uttered a small word of prayer before she entered the building. Upon entering, her eyes lit up at how magnificent the space was. It was one of those modern-looking skyscrapers with at least a hundred floors. The luxurious interior made her feel way out of place with its expensive cashmere smell, but Katherine appreciated the hint of mint sweets circulating in the air. She inhaled appreciatively as she walked further inside the building and was even more astounded at how distinctive and sophisticated the decor and high-end furniture were. She came to an halt when she noticed the employees staring at her. It made her feel awkward. They were all well-dressed and everyt
Katherine was furious when she got back to her café. How could someone be so arrogant and disrespectful? She felt bad when he disrespected her business, but when he spoke about her husband, not knowing her or anything about her life, that was the last straw. She didn't care about his review, she just wanted to get a little revenge for what he said and especially for splashing her with his car. With that attitude, he might as well have been the one who was driving. A slight smile played on her lips as she remembered the joy she felt when she doused him with the cappuccino. He was so enraged and flustered and that was very satisfying for her. She made a mental note that she would call Taryn and tell her about her encounter with the customer from hell. She announced her presence to Lexie, who informed her that her children were in the lounge waiting for her. She went to see what they were up to and found them both sitting on the couch with matching textbooks and pencils in hand.“Hello,
The twins were growing tired. The sun was out and getting warmer as the minutes passed by. “I'm thirsty,” Nate complained as he stopped to catch his breath, resting his hands on his hips as he exhaled. “Just a few more houses and I promise we'll find him,” Nola sighed. She was also sweating and breathing heavily, but her plan was in motion, and she felt that she was close to finding a husband for her mother. Miss Polly was parched, she promised herself that this would be the last time she did anything like this. Her bones just were too old for such strenuous activities anymore, plus the children were being odd when they knocked on doors where a gentleman would answer. She removed the bag pack on her back that she had most of the baked goods in, plus she had some water and juice packed in there for the kids. She plucked a bottled water from the bag. “Here you go, Nathan,” she handed the boy the bottle.“Thanks, Miss Polly.” Nathan finished the bottle in two go, he had to pause to ca
Nola just stood there, staring at the massive building. For some reason, she thought the top reached the clouds. She was standing at the front door long enough for her brother to catch up to her. “You know we're grounded, don't you,” he said, tired. His sister turned to him and saw him bending forward with his hand on his knees and gasping for air. “Well, it will be worth it because mom's new husband is in this house right now.” She spoke while keeping her eyes on the massive doors. This house was even bigger than Grandma Deborah’s. “And how'd you know that?” Nate questioned. He thought his sister was weird sometimes. “I don’t know, Nate. A woman just knows these things sometimes,” Nola let out. “Whatever, let's just get this over with and done,” Nathan rolled his eyes. “There's a problem,”“What is it now?” Nola pointed to the doorbell that was much too high for them to reach. “Amateur,” Nate rolled his eyes as he folded his fist and used his knuckles to knock on the door.
