"I'm sorry that I had to drag him along with me. I'm so mad at Kiran for letting me down, and now he's being an arse about it, but I didn't want you to go through this alone because I care about you.

He approaches me and places his finger on my lips as he moves closer. "Shush, don't be too serious. He will be a pleasant diversion for me, and I will enjoy having him here.

"Yeah, well. I'm concerned about the conflict that could arise with Jennifer's family.

Sincerity compels me to confess that I would not permit you to be here if I believed there was a possible conflict. They have not been able to make any calls or make touch with anyone, and it has been promised that they will not be out for a very long time. I was told that they would be down for a very long period.

"And what about her?" you might ask.

"I need to sever relations with her, so I have requested her to abstain from attending the burial," you may say.

The wide open spaces and plentiful fresh air must allow Lucas to sleep. I remember that Rory left the house just before five this morning when it was raining outside, and I put my arm out to Rory's side of the bed. It is chilly, and I recall that he did so.Before going into Lucas, I make sure that I'm dressed appropriately. When we walk downstairs, I cook breakfast and pack Rory something to take with him since I enjoy playing house with him, making me feel wonderful. As we pack up, I look around and see Rory huddled beneath a tractor beside one of the barns. As I get closer to him, all that can be seen of him are his legs since they are sticking out from under the enormous machine. "Hey," I say to him. That crotch is so distinctive; I'd recognize it anywhere! As he pulls himself out, Lucas chortles at the state of his face, which is caked in mud and oil. At this moment, he appears to be extremely filthy and extremely overheated. I stand before you and say, "I brought you breakfast."

I don’t want to look at her smug, smiling face.By the time I get back to the farm, I have had twenty minutes of precious overthinking time, and I am a mess. I call Rory as soon as I pull into safety, and by the time I get to the farmhouse, he is standing on the doorstep, waiting.“Hey,” he says as he opens my car door. “What’s wrong?”Tears are running down my cheeks, I look at Lucas, who is safely asleep in the car seat, and I climb into Rory’s arms. “Tell me, Darcy, what’s happened?”I close the door and lean against the car to keep my jelly legs steady. The bitch really got to me!“I saw Jen,” I mumble. “She basically threatened Lucas.”He strokes his hands down my arms as his jaw tightens. “She did what?”“She said, as long as you don’t do anything stupid, Lucas will be fine.”He clenches his fist beside him and shakes his head. “Who the fuck does she think she is?”

  • THE GREAT ARRANGEMENT   CHAPTER SEVENTY ONE

How are things going on the farm, farmer? As I climb into bed next to Rory, I ask the question. Since he began cleaning up the farm, preparing meals, and then amusing his family, he hasn't taken a break all day. However, it appears that he likes it better that way.As he rests on his back, gazing at the ceiling, I can't help but wonder what thoughts are going through his head. Before answering, he draws in a long, exhaustion-filled breath. "I just can't wrap my head around the fact that she's no longer here," she said.I slowly move my hand down his naked chest as I bend to the side of my chair to get closer to him. "At the moment, I don't think it will, but how do you feel about tomorrow?"He adopts the same stance as me and leans on his side with his back to me. "It means a lot to me that you have come here, Darcy, and I'm dreading it, but I'm delighted you're going to be there," Elizabeth said to Darcy."It's a shame it couldn't have been under different circumstances because I've

As I walk through the shower room, I yell to Rory, "Come on, we're going to be late!" You must consume something before you go.Silence.I check on Lucas, who has finished getting dressed and is currently engrossed in watching Paw Patrol on the couch. "Rory," I murmur in a hushed voice as I open the door to the shower room.To my amazement, he has not cleaned up his act and still stinks. As I go closer to him, I reply, "I was under the impression you were taking a shower." He is completely clothed and seated on the toilet seat while lowering his head in prayer. When he lifts his head, I can see by the redness in his eyes that it has finally dawned on him. He has finally understood that today marks the end of his mother's life.“Hey.” I approach him and wrap my arms around his head while he does the same for me, wrapping his around my waist. I can feel his entire body shaking as he finally gives in. I lower my voice and murmur to Rory, "You don't need to be strong today." "Today is you

We mainly just laze about; I don't want to drive home, but I have certain things I need to take care of tomorrow at work that I need to accomplish in person. I find it difficult to leave Rory once more, and I detest the idea of doing so. Even though he has informed me he would be back in less than a week, the thought that he may never return to Manchester terrifies me.I chat to Rory while Lucas is dozing off because I am on the final portion of the journey, and I am so afraid of missing his face that it is terrifying. Just don't blow hot and cold once more, please. My wounded heart can't take much more sorrow, and I don't think I can handle any more turmoil in this relationship. My time with Rory feels so far away now that I've been back at work for almost a week. Even though we have had nightly video conversations, I still feel the urge to touch him. Kiss his soft lips and run my fingers through his short hair. He still doesn't have that sparkle in his eyes, and he admitted that he

From the restaurant, we proceed to the neighborhood bar. By the time we enter, it is crowded, and there are no open tables, so we locate a spot to hang out. Rory has come around and will be going with Lucas and me to the party. Rory enters like the shining knight he is while I'm stressed out. He collects the cake and celebration bags and packs them into the car. Then he managed to persuade Lucas to put on his new shoes, which I had just argued about for twenty minutes because he said they were too tight. Are you sincere?"I inquire as he encircles me from behind. He giggles, "As real as they come, baby." He's now beginning to get comfortable and find his spot. Despite being concerned and under pressure because the farm hasn't sold yet, he is doing okay. After work, he must continue to oversee the books and everything, which means he must do it in his leisure time. I dislike that he is constantly busy, but I suppose that is how he is; he always seems to find things to do. In the third year..............It's the middle of July, and Rory and I have just gotten married on our land. The morning was beautiful, with the summer sun shining brightly, and the breeze carried the scent of fresh flowers from the fields all about us. The evening's marquee and food preparations are lovely. The tables have been decorated with green and white flowers to bring the outdoors inside. The tent's thin planted trees provide the impression that you're still outdoors. It's better than my wildest expectations.Kerry exclaims, "Oh my my, what a lovely wedding," although she is currently in her own "wedding mood" after recently becoming engaged to her fiancé of two years, Liam. We all agree that the two belong together because they are so cute. Kerry could not have found a better match for herself. He is hilarious, kind, and forthright. • THE GREAT ARRANGEMENT   CHAPTER EIGHTY SIX

I dare not watch as Rory attempts to pin down the man. I shuffle up the stairs toward the knife, which is shining there. Upon hearing the approaching police sirens, I look up to see Rory on top of the man, pounding him. Blood is splattered everywhere, and it's unclear whether it's Rory's or the other man's.I haven't even had time to take in my surroundings before a police officer starts shouting at me. Can I check on you? Do you have any wounds? It's just fine, I keep repeating to myself. Upon being helped to my feet, I discovered my leg was bleeding; I must have caught it on something during my fall. The man is handcuffed, and a cop has his knee in Rory's back as they lie on the ground. "Rory! Is he alright? When the police arrive, I yell at them. I next turn my attention to the vehicle in which Lucas is riding. I hoped he hadn't seen anything when it took me to place him in the car till the police arrived (which felt like an eternity). He's sleeping when I arrive at the car, so I

  • THE GREAT ARRANGEMENT   CHAPTER EIGHTY FIVE

Kiran appears to have calmed down after hearing the divorce news; I've initiated the process, and he seems content with it; nevertheless, we must wait two years after the divorce is finalized before we can formally apply for anything; at least he is aware of this delay. Three weeks from now is Christmas, and if he wants to participate in all the festivities Lucas will be hosting, he will need to be near Rory. I want him to hang out with Rory to show Kiran what a decent person Rory is; Rory is a good person; he doesn't want any harm to come to Kiran, and that's why I like him so much. The old house is still not far enough along for Rory to be staying there, so he's been spending most nights at mine instead while it's chilly outside. Even while he insists everything is great, the last time I was over there a few weeks back, the temperature was so low that his tap had frozen. What would you like for breakfast, big man?His eyes fall on Lucas.Lucas yells, "Eggs." The doorbell's ringing jolts me from my restful slumber. Getting awakened is the worst, especially if you're in the middle of a fantastic dream. I'm shocked to see Kiran standing there as I open the door. When he stands with his fists on his hips and his nostrils flared, it's clear he's not happy. He seemed to have gotten out of bed and come here straight away. You don't look nice!" As we enter the house, I invite him in. As in, "What do you want this early?""You've got my undivided attention because I need to know your rationale for entrusting my youngster to your lover.I turn around to face him, and while he looks me over, I zip up my robe. Please excuse me, I had to go for a while, but Rory was here, so it wasn't a problem.Kiran exclaims, "You bet it is a fucking issue."Really? I have to shake my head to believe it. After nine months of worry and stress, Rory has finally been able to sell the property. He finally takes possession of his new home today. He chose a shabby old house that would take him a decade to restore to living conditions.'Come on, Darcy, hurry up. I can't wait to see it,' he calls up the stairs. I have never seen him so impatient as now, so I'd better be ready. I find it hard to share his enthusiasm for his idea; to me, it seems like a complete and utter failure.About five minutes later, he leaves the main road and drives onto the property. It's just as horrible as I feared, yet he seems to notice something I'm missing. Stopping in front of a yellow stone structure, he exclaims, "Wow, look at this." The building, as it turns out, has some quite remarkable original sash windows. "It's airtight, wired for electricity, and plumbed into a nearby stream for water, but it's missing the gas hookup."Do you feel up to the task at hand?I guess it's too late if I'm not," he says with
