ALEXANDER POV
I might have turned into a statue as I watched her go; she just insulted me in the presence of my men.
They all stayed silent, waiting for me to shoot her in the head or something, but I couldn't move; instead, I found myself wanting to follow her.
I have always loved a challenge, and Kelly seems like the type I would want to keep. "Should I go after her?" Finn, my second in command, asked.
He thinks I want him to go finish her off, but it was far from that; I want to keep her instead, which doesn't make any sense. I don't chase women or try to make them stay.
Kelly is a bit different from all the women I have met ever since my ex-wife left me. The women usually are the ones to try to get my attention, but I found myself wanting Kelly to look at me at the bar last night.
She didn't seem impressed or even try to make advances at me until she was completely wasted. I should have stopped her, but I couldn't because I couldn't think straight.
I wanted her so badly.
And I still want her now.
"Follow her and find out where she lives; make sure you stay out of sight," I ordered, even though I know Finn is one of the most skilled men in my cartel.
"Yes, boss." He followed the long-gone Kelly. I had the uncontrollable urge to pin her to my bed when I saw her there, looking so shocked and confused, then she turned all her anger and frustration on me.
She doesn't know who I am yet, and that makes the chase even better; I'm going to claim her as mine with or without her cooperation.
I left for my company; it's one of the many ploys I use to deceive the people in this city; they all see me as a billionaire with a successful tech company.
But only a few of them know what goes on behind the facade, due to the rumors most of my rivals spread about me.
I don't really care about those things; my family worked hard to get here, and my shady business has nothing to do with the people in this city.
"Boss, the Black Bullet clan leader asked to meet you personally when the shipments arrive." Devon said, trying to match my strides, "If their old leader thinks he's that smart, then let's give him what he wants; I might even decide to finish him off if he tries anything," I replied, and he nodded.
They can all try to get to me, but they will never succeed. I own this city, and nothing is ever going to bring me down.
A memory of what happened last night flashed, and I sighed. Kelly can't deny that she didn't feel what I felt last night when I saw her.
I was watching her through the crowd, and I thought she was pretty until I got to see her up close; she's breathtakingly stunning. The type that you have to memorize all her features; it's ingrained in my memory all of it.
Her long eyelashes and watermelon pink mouth with those seductive blue-gray eyes, the way she held on to me when
"Boss, you dropped your phone." Devon gave me a confused look, and I looked down to see my phone on the ground.
Shit.
This isn't good. I have a board meeting, and I can't be thinking about Kelly; otherwise, I'm going to be distracted. Devon picked up the phone, and I sighed.
It's the first time I'm distracted over a woman since Gina. I should stay away from Kelly if she's going to be a problem for me.
But I couldn't bring myself to make the call and tell Finn to back off. We left for the company, and I remembered I had an appointment before the board meeting.
"Drive faster," I ordered, and the driver hit the gas, driving at high speed.
We got to the company in no time, and I got out of the car, shutting the door behind me. As usual, some reporters hung around trying to get a quote, but my guards didn't let them through.
If they value their lives, they should be staying away. Most mod bosses finish off persistent journalists, but I let them be; after all, they are just doing their jobs, as long as I don't see any negative rumors of me on paper.
I headed for the elevator when I got inside the massive building. Most of my employees saw me and bowed in respect.
I got into my private elevator, and Devon followed while the rest stayed outside. We got to the first floor, and Daniela, my personal assistant, was waiting outside the elevator.
"The investors are here; should I tell them to wait or should we go through with the meeting first?" She asked, and I thought about going through with the meeting first, but the appointment cannot wait.
"For how long have they been waiting?" I asked, referring to the investors.
"Two hours, sir," she replied.
"Then I should see them first; you go set up things in the boardroom. I will meet you there in twenty minutes," I stated, and she nodded before walking away.
"Devon, I want you to run a background check on the girl you saw at my house today," I ordered.
"But I don't have her name or pictures," he pointed out.
"Her name is Kelly. I don't care about how you are going to do it, but I want results after my meeting; otherwise, you will forget about having legs to walk around with. Now get to work," I commanded, and he scurried off.
I sent Finn a text asking him about his whereabouts. My little butterfly thinks she is done with me, but she was wrong.
I'm just getting started with her, and I will do everything to have her, even if it means holding her hostage.
I headed for my office, and I met three men in suits sitting there; they stood up the moment they saw me.
One of them looked angry with his shining bald head and red face. "Mr. Alexander, this is --"
I didn't let him finish before cutting in.
"Let's get down to business, gentlemen." I gestured for them to take a seat.
I don't have all day, and I'm not exactly a patient man.
I might lose my temper and kill him without a second thought instead of listening to his rubbish.
If only they knew what I'm capable of, they'd sit down and keep their mouths shut.
KELLY POV The tears streamed down my chin as I hopped into the taxi. I couldn't even stop myself from sobbing like a child. The driver was stealing glances.at me, but he couldn't ask if I was okay. This is New York; not everyone is okay with their lives, and a sobbing girl in his taxi shouldn't be his problem. I wiped the tears trying to figure out what I would say to Holly or Dain. I really hope Holly is alright, because I don't understand why she will let me out of her sight. Was she drunk too?Or is it just my fault that I went back to the handsome stranger I met at the bar? I'm such a dumb idiot. All these wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been drinking like that; my head is pounding and my stomach rumbles loudly enough for the driver to hear. I didn't have the time to be embarrassed because I was busy reflecting on my actions. "Here." The driver tossed me a chocolate bar, and I grabbed it, tearing it open.My eyes caught my reflection in the side mirror, and I looked terri
KELLY POVI gasped as Dain forced me to sit, and Holly chuckled before pulling him closer. Then she kissed him again, this time with her eyes on me.It felt as if my heart was ripped out of my chest and her betrayal stinged even more than Dain's. We are like soul sisters, and I love her so damn much.I didn't expect this from Dain or even from her. I have never felt so heartbroken all my life; she pulled away, smirking at me."How did that make you feel?" She taunted."Nauseous," I replied, wiping the tears on my cheeks; it didn't stop more from falling. This is Holly, my nice friend that looks out for me, the one that was worried that I would get lost in the crowd last night. The one I shared everything with, and nobody knows her like she knows me; she is the reason I'm not in college now. I gave her my savings because she had a debt she wanted to pay. This is how she repays me? Sleeping with my boyfriend behind my back and holding a knife at me."Oh, don't cry, you poor thing. Loo
Alex’s POV Phone rings. “Daniela, I'm in the middle of the investors meeting. Why is my cell ringing?” ? “Sir, it's your personal phone; you don't have control over it.”. I checked and saw that it was Finn calling. What could he possibly have to say? I ended the call. **Phone beeps some minutes later; it was a picture of my butterfly in blood from Finn. I stormed out of the meeting while placing a call to Finn. “What the hell happened to her?” I yelled as my heart was filled with rage. “Sir, she was attacked by two people, a lady and a male, in her apartment.”. “Why did you not call sooner? What's the possibility of her being alive? Where are you right now? I asked all these without waiting for an answer from him. “Sir, you need to calm down.” “Don't bloody ask me to calm down and tell me where the hell you are, else I'll make sure you see your maker once I take sight of you.”. “We are driving to the mansion to get her treatment. I just called the doctor, and he'll meet us
Kelly's POV I woke up at noon the next day, and it felt like I'd just woken up from a dream, but the aching pains in my shoulder and thigh as I tried to sit up proved it wasn't. I feel so weak, and there was this metallic taste in my mouth. I felt a bit feverish but not as bad as before when Holly first stabbed me. Yes, the realization hit me: Holly betrayed me with my boyfriend and tried to kill me. I lay there for a while analyzing how it all felt; I guess me passing out did not blur my memory. I can still remember the first stab on my shoulder; it came fast, a heat and pain ripping through my shoulder, my breath cut sharp and shallow. It wasn't just the pain of the knife cut; it was the person stabbing me. I could see the smirk on her face like I meant nothing to her this whole time she has been in my life; the emotional and physical pain triggered me to just leave, and she still went ahead to stab me again. I screamed when the knife came in contact with my skin; fast, withou
Kelly POVIs it the drugs? I'm starving like mad, but I've made up my mind: till I leave here, I won't be eating anything.Alex opens the door almost immediately. “You know you should eat, yes?” “I need to leave this room, no, this house; I need a change of clothes and undies.”“That shouldn't be a problem. I can get someone to shop for new things for you in brands and in dozens.“Show off your money for all I care, but my will stands.” I scoffed.“Currently, Kelly, I need you to be honest with me; I need you to tell me who attacked you and why they did it.”“I can't trust you. Don't you get it? How many times do you want me to repeat myself? And in all honesty, I'm beginning to feel like you kidnapped me.”He turned and looked at me like I was crazy.“Don't give me that look; this is the 21st century, and you're acting like a mafia or some sort of delusional boss. I have rights, and I could call the cops on you.” I said this trying to act like I wasn't scared he would get mad at me
ALEXANDER POV“Davon?” I thought as I made for the bottle of 1995 Leroy Musigny Grand Cru.“You know Davon is not a name worth pouring a glass for, right?” Daniela said as she walked into my home office.“I don't pour glasses for no man, Daniela.” I chuckled. “I think all my staff know my bottles, and all of you try to profile me once you see me with one, but it's not that deep; something might have just made me want that glass.”.“So what makes you want this bottle right now?” she said, stressing the “want.”.“It's a classic, you know, that's why.” “Boss, Devon has been on foreign soil for a long while hiding his identity; we all know him being here and making it obvious he is here means something.”.“It could mean a fresh start.”.“Do you believe what you just said? yourself, don't you think it has to do with the presence of this young Miss Kelly in your life?”“What are you trying to say?”.“I mean, he's betrayed you before, and for all I care, he could be here because someone hi
ALEXANDER POV…” since the driver is working with us, we can predict his movements and catch him off guard.”“True, but Devon isn’t someone who is easily caught off guard. Keep the driver monitored and see if he can give us more intel. I don’t want to make any rash moves until we know why Devon is back and what he’s after.”Daniela chimed in. “It’s likely that Devon’s return ties into Kelly somehow. Her attackers might be random, but what if they are not? You were not in a prior relationship; it was a one-night stand, and see how her effect ripples. This could be a strategic move to bait you.”“You think someone used her to draw me out?” I asked, swirling my drink thoughtfully.“It’s a possibility. Devon has always been one for elaborate schemes. If Kelly’s presence in your life is known to him, he might see her as a weak spot.”I leaned back in my chair, running a hand through my hair. “If that’s true, it means we’re already compromised. She might not even realize what danger she’s i
KELLY’S POV Finally he's letting me in on what's up.“Devon is almost close to the angel of death, just that I'm worse than him.”.“You're worse? How”.“I'm worse in the sense that I can kill him.” I became scared; what's all this prank?“You're joking, right?” I asked, hoping he'll laugh or say he was just pulling my leg, but nothing; he looked at me point-blank.“From your story, I'm certain you're not affiliated with Devon, so I have to keep you hidden; he has used my weakness when it comes to women I loved, and he hit me so bad“.“Have you tried forgiving and letting go?”.He laughed dryly and said, “Not in my world; we don't forgive; we make them pay.” I swallowed an invisible substance that produced the rising tension in me.“But you do know that with what you just said, I no longer feel safe with you.“We fell silent for a while. “I'll protect you at all costs, Kelly. Your protection will be certain with me, and I'll make sure hell goes empty and men lose their nuts before a s
Kelly’s POVI opened my eyes and found out it was morning.Alex’s arms were still wrapped around me as I stirred awake, his steady breathing tickling the back of my neck.“You’re awake,” he murmured, his voice still husky with sleep.“Barely,” I replied, snuggling closer. “It feels too early to get up.”“That’s because it is,” he said with a low chuckle. “But you have to. Work calls, doesn’t it?”“Why do you always ruin perfectly good mornings with the mention of work?” I teased, turning in his arms to face him.“Because I’m the responsible one here,” he said smugly, brushing a strand of hair away from my face.I rolled my eyes. “Right, Mr. Responsible. Weren’t you the same person who tried to convince me to skip work last week for a spontaneous road trip?”“Guilty as charged,” he admitted, grinning. “But that’s because I wanted to spend more time with you.”“And now you’re rushing me out of bed. Make it make sense, Alex.”He laughed, his blue eyes sparkling. “Fine, stay in bed. But d
Kelly’s POVI lay sprawled on the bed, fresh from the shower, my damp hair clinging to my shoulders. The soft glow of the bedside lamp cast a warm hue over the room, while the faint hum of night crickets filled the air. My fingers trailed lazily over my phone screen as I scrolled through a few work emails, though my mind wasn’t fully engaged.Tomorrow was going to be another busy day at work, and I was debating whether to wear the cream blouse with the floral pencil skirt or stick with the classic black dress that never failed me. I sighed, tossing my phone to the side and staring up at the ceiling, pondering the endless decisions that came with adulting. The knock on the door startled me slightly, pulling me out of my thoughts. Before I could respond, Alex pushed the door open, a boyish grin on his face.“Do you ever wait for an invitation?” I teased, sitting up and pulling the blanket over my legs.“You don’t seem like the type who’d turn me away,” he shot back, stepping fully into
Alex’s POVI sat across from Kelly, watching her sift through the shopping bags scattered across the floor. She had an almost childlike excitement, carefully pulling out each item as if she were rediscovering them. "How many more bags do we have?" she asked, tossing a playful glance my way. "Too many," I replied, grinning. "But every single one was worth it." She held up the shimmering silver gown, the one that had everyone in the boutique staring. "This one... I still can't believe you picked it." "Why not?" I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. "It’s you. Bold. Stunning. Unforgettable." Her cheeks flushed, but she quickly masked it by holding the dress against herself and twirling. "You’re laying it on thick tonight, Alex." "Is it working?" I teased. She shrugged, smirking. "Maybe." Just as she was about to sit, my phone buzzed on the coffee table. The sharp vibration cut through the room's cozy ambiance. Kelly’s eyes flicked to the screen. "Work?" she asked, her
Alex’s POVI stood by the dining table, watching Kelly prepare her plate, completely unaware of the thoughts swirling through my head. She looked radiant, even with her hair slightly disheveled and her morning robe loose around her shoulders. Moments like this reminded me of why I fought so hard to keep her in my life."Are you going to just stare, or are you actually going to eat?" she teased, flashing me a mischievous grin as she stabbed a piece of toast with her fork.“I was just wondering how someone could look so beautiful and innocent, not that you're so innocent ,” I replied smoothly, pulling out a chair and sitting beside her.“Flattery, you know I sometimes don't see this beauty everyone sees; you know I feel cute from time to time, but sometimes I feel you all just exaggerate how I look,” she said, though I caught the blush rising in her cheeks. We started eating in silence, though Kelly’s idea of eating seemed to involve finding creative ways to make me laugh.“Here,” she s
Kelly’s POVAs I walked back into the mansion, my heart was still racing from the confrontation with Gina. Every word of our exchange replayed in my mind like a warning siren. I couldn’t let her get to me or Alex. My resolve was firm, but I couldn’t ignore the sense of foreboding creeping up my spine.I pushed open the door, determined to shake off the unease. To my surprise, Alex was standing by the doorway, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. The intensity in his eyes made my steps falter.“Alex,” I said softly, my voice betraying my nervousness. “I didn’t know you’d be waiting here.” Was he listening all this while? He didn’t respond immediately, his piercing gaze locked on mine. My heart sank. Had he heard? “Say something,” I screamed in my head.“You called Gina,” he said evenly, though there was an edge to his tone.I froze, the blood draining from my face. “You—uh—you heard?” I made myself walk closer in order to not show how shaken I am thinking he's about to pick an offe
Kelly’s POVThe day after the attack was chaotic, yet there was a strange sense of normalcy in the routine. At least, on the surface. I had spent most of the morning engrossed in my work at the front desk, filing appointments, organizing schedules, and handling client correspondence. The attack was still fresh in my mind, but Alex had assured me that it was under control. He hadn’t gone into detail, though, and I didn’t press him. After all, I had enough on my plate already.By the time lunchtime rolled around, I decided to surprise Alex and Daniela with an order from their favorite restaurant. I picked up my phone and placed the order quickly, hoping it would cheer Alex up. He’d been distant, his mind clearly elsewhere.Once the food arrived, I carried it up to Alex’s office. Daniela was already there, seated on the couch, her laptop balanced on her knees.“Lunch break!” I announced, placing the bags on Alex’s desk.“Finally,” Daniela said, stretching. “I was starting to think I’d ha
Alex’s POVThe morning after the attack, I woke to the quiet tension that had filled the house. Kelly was still asleep, her figure serene in the soft morning light. For a moment, I let myself breathe. I needed this—the calm before the storm.Downstairs in my office, Marcus and Daniela were already waiting for me. The air was charged with unspoken thoughts.“Boss,” Marcus began, “we finished going through the car and found this.”He handed me a manila folder.I flipped it open, scanning the contents. My stomach twisted into a knot as I read the message inside:“Hello, Alex. You thought I’d fade into the shadows, but I always leave a trail. Evidence of your little empire’s skeletons is in my hands. I’m not looking to sell it to the authorities yet... but I want you to think carefully about what I can do with it. Choose wisely, darling. Gina.”Attached were photos of documents—some real, others fabricated—that painted a damning picture of my business dealings. She had also included incri
Alex’s POVThe soft hum of my office heater was the only noise as I leaned back in my chair, reviewing our latest quarterly reports. My focus was razor-sharp; after all, I had an empire to run. I didn't want this to be a front anymore; I want something more legal for Kelly's sake. Yet, as always, thoughts of Kelly lingered at the edges of my mind. Her birthday had been a success. She was radiant, happy, and, most importantly, by my side. Everything I did was for her, whether she realized it or not.The intercom on my desk crackled, breaking my concentration. "Mr. Bloodhound" came from the voice of Paul, one of the security guards stationed downstairs."Yes?" I responded, sitting up straight."Sir, there’s a situation with your car. One of the rear tires is punctured. It looks deliberate," he said, his voice unusually tense."Deliberate? How certain are you?""Very certain, sir. Should I have it inspected further?""Stay there. I’ll send someone to check it out," I said, immediately en
Kelly’s POV"Kelly! Kelly, wake up!" Alex’s voice jolted me out of a dream I couldn’t quite remember. His hand was warm on my shoulder, shaking me gently.I groaned, rolling over. "Alex, it’s still dark out. What are you doing?""It’s 8 a.m., Angel," he said, his tone playful but firm. "Come on, get dressed. We have somewhere to be."I sat up, blinking. "Somewhere to be? On a Sunday? Alex, I had plans to sleep in and maybe binge-watch some crime drama."He grinned. "Well, your plans just changed. Trust me, you’ll love this.""Do I at least get a hint?""Not a chance," he said, tugging the blanket off me. "Now hurry up. I’ll be downstairs. You have twenty minutes."I groaned again but swung my legs off the bed. "Fine, but this better be worth it."By the time I made it downstairs, dressed in jeans and a cozy sweater, Alex was leaning against the kitchen counter, sipping coffee. He looked up and smiled. "Ready?""As ready as I’ll ever be," I said, grabbing the cup he’d set out for me. "
