POV: LAUREN

I was washing dishes in the back of the restaurant, the smell of food and detergent clinging to my already worn-out uniform. The job was new, but there wasn’t much to learn. Clean, wash, repeat. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was a way to make some money. There was no room for pride—not with debts piling up and my mother needing care.

“Lauren!” The impatient voice of the manager made me look up. “Table four, now!”

I sighed, wiping my hands on my apron before leaving the kitchen. I knew I shouldn’t take too long, but as I looked toward the indicated table, my stomach turned. Sitting there with smug smiles were Ethan and Violet.

My ex-husband was as impeccable as ever, dressed in a suit that probably cost more than everything I had in the bank. Violet, sitting beside him, looked like a model in a tight dress with an expression of pure superiority. My feet were almost frozen in place, but I knew I didn’t have a choice.

Swallowing hard, I adjusted my apron and approached with hesitant steps. They didn’t recognize me immediately, but as I got closer to pick up their empty plates, Violet’s eyes narrowed, and a cruel smile spread across her lips.

“Lauren?” she said, feigning exaggerated surprise. “I can’t believe it’s you! Working here? Well… what an interesting turn of events.”

“Looks like some people fall quickly, don’t they?” Ethan added, his tone laced with the sarcasm I knew all too well. “I have to admit, I didn’t expect to see you in a place like this.”

“Excuse me,” I murmured, trying to keep my composure as I collected their plates.

“I can’t believe you’re ignoring Ethan,” Violet laughed, leaning back in her chair. “After all, he is your ex-husband, isn’t he? I think you should at least thank him. If it weren’t for him, you wouldn’t have this amazing ‘opportunity.’”

“That’s right,” Ethan chimed in with a cynical smile. “Life has a funny way of putting people in their proper place.”

I gripped the plates tightly, trying to ignore the knot in my chest.

“Excuse me, I need to collect the glasses as well,” I said, keeping my tone neutral.

“Oh, of course,” Violet replied, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “We wouldn’t want to interrupt your… career.”

They laughed together, and my face burned. My heart screamed for me to respond, but my mind knew I couldn’t. I needed this job.

As I bent down to pick up the glasses, I felt something under my foot. I stumbled and fell to my knees, the plates, and glasses slipping from my hands and shattering on the floor. Violet had intentionally placed her foot in my path.

The crash made everyone in the restaurant turn to look. My face burned with humiliation as I scrambled to pick up the shards quickly. A drop of wine landed on Violet’s pristine dress, and her reaction was immediate.

“You walking disaster!” Violet screamed, dramatically pushing her chair back as if I’d ruined her entire life. “Look what you’ve done to my dress!”

“I’m so sorry.” I tried to say, crouching down to gather the broken pieces.

“Sorry?” she snapped. “Isn’t it enough that your life is a failure? Now you want to ruin mine too?”

“Violet, are you okay?” Ethan asked, but the smug smile on his face showed he was enjoying the spectacle.

“It was… it was an accident.” I tried to explain, but she cut me off.

“An accident?” Violet said sharply. “Maybe working here is too much for you, Lauren. Perhaps you should try something more suited to your level. Cleaning bathrooms, perhaps?”

The manager rushed over, his expression tense.

“What’s going on here?”

“That waitress was extremely rude to us!” Violet exclaimed, her voice dripping with fake indignation. “She ruined my dress and practically threw the plates on the floor.”

“I tripped…” I tried to explain, but the look on the manager’s face made it clear he wasn’t interested in hearing me out.

“Lauren, we need to talk,” he said, pulling me aside. “I can’t have customers complaining like this. I think it’s best if you go home.”

I knew what was coming. Shame and anger surged through me like a wave, but I kept my head high. With jerky movements, I pulled off my apron and, without thinking twice, threw it in Ethan’s face.

“You win. I hope you’re satisfied,” I said firmly, even though my voice wavered, before walking out the front door, ignoring the curious stares of the customers.

Outside, the cold air hit my face, but the anger still burned in my chest. My eyes began to sting with unshed tears.

“Damn Ethan. Damn Violet,” I muttered, holding back the tears with all my strength.

Then I felt something small and warm wrapping around my legs from behind. Surprised, I turned around and saw that little boy—the same one from the lake—looking up at me with a worried expression.

“Little one? What are you doing here?” I asked, crouching down to his level.

“I saw you leave crying,” he said softly, his eyes glistening with tears. “Are you sad?”

My defenses crumbled. I cupped his small face in my hands.

“Yes, little angel, I am sad.”

He hugged me tightly, burying his face in my shoulder.

“I don’t like it when they’re mean to you,” he said.

His simple, heartfelt words made the tears I had been holding back finally fall.

“I wish you were my mom, so I could protect you from everyone,” he said at last, hugging me even tighter.

I swallowed hard, surprised, letting out a soft gasp as I gently stroked his hair.

“It’s okay, my little one. They can’t hurt me more than they already have.”

Before I could say anything else, I felt a tall shadow approach. Looking up in surprise, I saw that imposing man standing there, his eyes fixed on me. His posture was firm, and there was something unreadable in his expression.

He cleared his throat, breaking the silence.

“It seems that no matter where we are, we always end up crossing paths. Perhaps it’s fate’s little irony.”

His tone carried a hint of sarcasm and something else something I couldn’t quite place. Before I could ask what he wanted, the handsome, mysterious man crossed his arms and added:

“I think it’s time we discuss something important.”
