The silence was broken by Avalynn's words, which hung in the air like it were a real thing.

Jace paused, looking at his wife and the woman alternately, his mind racing with confused feelings.

A part of him wanted to burst into laughter, to scoop Avalynn up and spin her around the kitchen.

But there was another part of him that enjoyed the woman's confused face.

A sly, spiteful grin stretched over his features.

"All right," Jace said slowly, his tone masked as surprise. "It appears that there was a mistake."

The woman's neatly groomed face twisted with uncertainty as she stuttered. "His wife? But..."

Avalynn braced herself and raised her chin a little. "Yes, his wife," she answered in a cool, clear voice. "And you are the outsider, my love."

The woman's glare flared as her eyes narrowed. "This is insane," she stated quietly. "You think I'm going to think this...maid...is your wife?"

With ease, Jace said, "Oh, she's much more than a maid," moving closer to place his arm around Avalynn'
