Alexandria stood in front of her bedroom mirror, wiping a cloth with her split lip. Blood was in her mouth, the metallic taste of her battle with Vladimir. Her ribs ached where he had punched her, but ached the most was her pride.

Vladimir thought he had won.

But he had just made a fatal mistake.

And she would make him pay.

She spun when the door creaked open. One of her father's guards entered, dipping his head.

"The Elder summons you," he said.

Alexandria breathed, dipping her head. "It's time."

She threw a black cloak over her shoulders, covering bruises on her arms, and followed the guard through the darkness of the Elder's keep.

Tonight, it would occur.

The council chamber was cold and quiet. Dozens of elder wolves formed a half-circle, their faces thrown into shadow by flickering torchlight. At the center, her father—the Elder—sat unmoving, his face impassive as he regarded her coming.

"Alexandria," he said, voice heavy with the gravity of authority. "You called this conclave. S

One of the council members, a hard-bitten soldier with battle-scars on his face, leaned forward. "And what are you having us do, Alexandria? Deny an Alpha based on no facts but your wounded pride?"She bashed her hand down on the table. "My pride?" She talked with the icy edge of a knife amidst the din. "This is not about me! This is the future of our pack that is being put on the line! If Vladimir can break a blood bond without consequences, what will he destroy next? If he can trade away a Luna for a slave, how does that reflect on our traditions? Our strength?"The Elder's fingers pounded on the tabletop. "You want war."She glared back at him without blinking. "I want justice."There was a pause of a heartbeat. Then the Elder stepped away from the chair, releasing a deep sigh. "Vladimir has been a good leader. His leadership has not been without its successes."Alexandria's fingers curled into fists. "His leadership has also been founded upon lies."One of the combatants smiled. "Y

Alexandria was the first to sense the shift. The air was filled with tension that had not yet been released, the way the air is just before a storm. She saw Vladimir's body language shift slightly. His previously impenetrable confidence—his control—seemed to crack. He was losing his hold. And she was only just starting to see the cracks in his armor. Her lips curled up into a small, smug smile as she crept closer. She moved deliberately, every step calculated to push him back into the corner, a corner in which his arrogance and pride would cease to be defenses.Vladimir's golden eyes—eyes which had once held the entire pack in their pocket—glowed with uncertainty as he looked at Emereah, who stood frozen in the center of the room, trembling hands. She had just released her power—power that had been building up inside of her for so many years. It was raw and untrained. And the power that had been locked up was now loose.Reality hit him hard. Vladimir's grip on Emereah was weakening, un

Vladimir’s golden eyes flickered, but he quickly regained his composure. His lips curled into a mocking smile, a thin veil over his rising fury. He turned toward Alexandria’s father, his voice now laced with venom."Good thing you’re here, then," Vladimir said, his tone now cold and calculated. "I hereby denounce Alexandria as my mate. She is no longer of any use to me."The words arrived in Alexandria like a slap in the face. Her mind reeled, shattered by her heart as it struggled to absorb the enormity of his words. The cruel nastiness of rejection, of completeness—never loved. Always power. Everything about control. Now, publicly for all to see, before the entire membership of the council, he cast her aside like common garbage."Basha, coward." Alexandria snarled, her voice heavy with pain at having been betrayed. "Do you think that you can abandon me like a broken toy? You have taken a deadly risk."But Vladimir did not look her way either. His eyes were on Emereah, whose magic sti

Vladimir was heaving, his huge frame now trembling with fury and anger. "You are making a mistake," he growled. "All of you. I will show you that I'm the Alpha, and you all will listen to me."But Alexandria didn't flinch. She remained stationary, every statement she makes now laced with fact. "You have no dominance left. The pack will never listen to you."Her words hung in the air, and for a moment, Vladimir was immobilized. His gold-specked eyes fixed her, the anger in them dissolving into something uglier, something colder. He was losing, and the pain seared hotter than any punch could ever possibly. "You think you can just walk away from me?" Vladimir snarled, his voice threatening. "I'm not finished."But Alexandria was ready. She moved forward, her voice solid and unyielding. "You are finished. The pack has spoken."With guards and elders around, there could no longer be any doubt as to who was in charge. It was not Vladimir. Never had been.Vladimir's body trembled with fury,

The condescending elders, ex-prisoners, sat stiff and unbroken, faces furrowed with weariness and fury."This is madness," one of them growled, breaking the silence. "How did this come about? How did we let him seize power so effortlessly?"Alexandria smiled, a cold, cruel smile, and shook her head. "Because you all underestimated him." Her eyes blazed with barely contained rage. "You thought Vladimir still the boy who craved your approval. But he isn't. He is a tyrant now, and you made him king."One of the older men, a silver-haired old man with fierce eyes, gasped for breath. "And what do we do, Alexandria? We're in a helpless dungeon. He's got Emereah in his clutches, the pack under his command, and we're at his mercy."Alexandria curled her lips into a sneer."And you're telling me to simply sit here while it happens?" She was close already, voice cold but deadly. "V

The smell of mildew hung around the lower cells like festering skin, choking in the manner only darkness was capable of. Alexandria sat chained to the stone table, her wrists raw from the iron shackles, but her back straight, her golden eyes wide open in spite of the pitch blackness around her. Her mind wasn't here—not quite. It was upstairs, in that great hall Vladimir had debased, with the woman she had once raised as a sister. Her Emereah."She's still in there," Alexandria breathed into the shadows. "And I'll get to her. Even if I have to raze the whole fortress to reach her."A noise—a light tapping—ran down the hallway. Her breathing froze.Footsteps. Soft. Light.Too light to be one of Vladimir's brutes.Too cautious to be chance. She leaned forward, heart pounding now. And then—there it was. A sliver of pale light cut through the bars. A face. Shadowed, hesitant. And familiar."Emereah," Alexandria breathed. The figure froze.“Who told you my name?” came the cautious reply, low

The silence returned after Emereah disappeared—but Alexandria's heart didn't.It was the bolting, bellowing, snapping against her ribs as if that was a battle drum. Her hands were shaking now while they were clenched into fists, cuffs digging into her wrists. Just for a moment that awful desperation of the dungeon did not seem so real; the chains became gossamer. She came. She listened. There was still time. But not enough.Tomorrow, the Moon Eclipse would bind Emereah to Vladimir in a ceremony as ancient as the earth—one that gnawed not merely on flesh, but on soul. If it worked, Emereah's doubt would die. Her memories would fade. Her defiance would be ash in her teeth. Alexandria paced what little space she had. Every step was a storm of tension. Her thoughts sharpened, cold and lightning-fast.I have to escape. Tonight. Before the ritual. She rested her head on the wall.More steps of the guards these days—she'd riled up a hornet's nest with speaking to Emereah. She could feel it.

The palace hall torches swayed in the windless air, their dark shadows moving upon the walls of stone. Alexandria's bare feet skimmed the cold floor with every wary step. Her breathing sparse, her racing heart thundering like a war drum within her breast. The pilfered guard's hood hid over her lean figure, cloaking the rent pieces of the dungeon uniform.Every sound vibrated too loudly—the groan of her joints, the quiet rustle of fabric, the biting zip of the stolen dagger on her leg."This building has not changed," she muttered to herself, running her hands over the ornate wall carvings. "Still wearing finery to conceal the stench of decay below."She crept down a tight corridor, her senses tingling for any sign of motion. Then, suddenly—Footsteps. Two guards.Too near. She poked herself into the corner as they took the turn, their voices low.".Did you hear about the Luna?" one of them breathed."She fell again this morning," another said. "He says it's the memories. They're starti

The hall was quiet.Too quiet.Alexandria's gasping breath rasped at the back of her throat as she pushed the bloody hand into the cool of the stone wall, the injury in her side bleeding heat. She did not know if the trickling was blood or sweat streaming down her temple, but it no longer mattered.Liberty lay just beyond her fingertips. And Emereah. Emereah was losing its hold."No," Alexandria gasped into the quiet, staggered forward. "No, not like this. I will not lose you."Her bare feet pounded the marble floor—every step an infringement of silence. Somewhere behind her, the ringing of guards crying out shattered the stillness. They'd discovered she was gone. Her heartbeat pounded in her throat.A low growl of hurt slipped out from between her teeth as she reached the end of the corridor and looked up towards the grating at the top of the servants' chute. Her only hope. Her side ached where they'd kicked her in the last battle, and her knuckles were bleeding—half flayed open when

Vladimir was sitting on the side of his bed, his amber-colored eyes locked onto Emereah. She stood in front of him, her angular body wrapped in a golden silk gown that flashed in the firefight. The clingy material seemed to mold over every inch of her frame, outlining her as a possession already unwrapped and already owned. Her hair fell in waves of deep red down her back, and her pale blue eyes—too pale now, almost glass-like—blinked slowly, as if reading his very breath.“Emereah,” he said, his voice low and smooth, “we are married now. You are my Luna. Then serve me now… as your husband.”A pause. Then, in quiet horror, she moved. She came down on her knees, the movement slow, smooth, practiced. Her hands lay upon his knees—delicate, poised. Her fingers wrapped in the folds of his trousers, and she bent her head the slightest bit towards him. There was sensuality in her attitude. But not a soul.Vladimir let out his breath, shivering down to his toes. Victory swept over him, a dark

The Red Crescent courtyard was filled with golden light, but dusk had devoured the sky. The fire torches danced in unnatural synchrony—each flame unnaturally motionless, as if under a spell. The guests stood frozen, their lips sealed by magic, their faces locked in silent rebellion. In the center, on a platform of elevated obsidian and bone, Emereah stood alongside Vladimir. Her formerly fierce silver eyes were empty now, gentle and submissive, like a puppet held captive by threads of air.She had a gown embroidered in threads of moonstone and rubies as blood-red as death—regal and macabre. Her bracelets, once symbols of her royalty, were now magical shackles that shone with magic, glinting each time her hand slightly shifted at Vladimir's whim. The nobles of the Silver Moon Pack stood in the background, all slaves, once family—tears flowing silently down their faces. Their eyes pleaded as their voices could not. They saw their princess, the daughter of their alpha, marry the man whos

The next day, things moved into high gear. Golden armor was put on Vladimir, while the inner courtyard of the palace erupted in magical roses that flowed red sap upon contact.Among the slave barracks, Silver Moon's nobles were chained and forced to construct the ceremonial arch. One old man bled from his palms as he placed the stone on the ground."She won't remember us," he said.Another lord, younger, growled through clenched teeth. "Then we remind her. Even if it kills us all." As sunset was dissolved into darkness, the palace halls blazed with the golden flutter of torchlight. But in Emereah's room, the air was cold. Still. Practically vacant.Alexandria stood nearly a foot away, her hand resting on Emereah's stiff one. Her breathing shook as she tried again."It's me," she breathed, voice shuddering beneath the burden of all their memories now behind her. "Alexandria. the one who reminded you of your past. Of Silver Moon. Of you."Emereah's lips parted, eyes wavering—but the fir

The moonlight had lost its warmth. It poured pale and cold over the marble floors of the throne room, where Emereah stood—still and silent—wrapped in a silver gown that shivered like starlight caught in a web. Her eyes, which had once brimmed with fire and spirit, now displayed the flat hollowness of glass. The sorceress's spell had taken root. She stood beside Vladimir, her body subservient, her spirit struggling in silence. The silver bangles on her wrists, once mere ornaments, now softly glowed with magic—a sign of slavery.Vladimir held out his hand.My people!" he shouted from the platform, face aglow with triumph. "Tonight, I announce what fate has long decreed. Emereah, child of the late Alpha of Silver Moon, will be my Luna. A union of two powers, two houses… and one throne!"The nobles of the Silver Moon pack—former proud warriors, now servile slaves in ragged robes—cried out in anguish. Their suffering echoed in the vaulted hall, raw and agonizing.No!\" one of the elders sh

But far, far deep inside her, beneath magic and altered memory, there was a spark of fire.A vision—blonde hair swirling in the wind, the cry of her name, gentle fingers clasped hard around her own in chill."Alex…?"The name hung on her lips, but did not escape.Vladimir felt the shiver and his eyes clenching. "No. Not now." He spun on his heel and dismissed the sorceress."Cast the spell more powerful," he commanded. "I want her will bound tighter than ever."The sorceress hesitated. "Alpha, the spell is already aching. Too much, and she can—""Do it!" he snarled, voice thunderous. "I will not let her go!"The sorceress curtsied, gliding back into the shadows. The torches in the cave tunnel cast eerie shadows as the sorceress glided towards the chamber, robes billowing behind her like a cloud of night. The air thickened with every step, charged with the chill bite of ancient blood and intricate magic. Behind the closed doors, Emereah stood still, her silver armlets pulsating with a

In the great hall, tension was palpable. Emereah's rebellion had not been anticipated, and Vladimir's mind stumbled to reassert command. Recent occurrences have been. overwhelming. But this is not the moment for conflict."Emereah's eyes did not waver. "So then when is the time, Vladimir? When will the truth be revealed?"A hum ran through the crowd of people gathered there. The elders glanced at each other, feeling the undertows of power struggle ahead.Vladimir stepped forward, bridging the gap between them. "You are my mate," he stated, his voice ringing off the stone walls. "Together, we will reign. To join and make our people stronger."Emereah's heart thudded in her chest. Vladimir stood, his face chiseled from ice, but something flashed behind his eyes—brief, barely perceptible. Fear. Not of Emereah's power. "That's not what it seems like."Vladimir moved towards her, outstretched hand, as if he could soothe the tempest brewing in her breast."Emereah—""No," she told him firmly, moving back, her voice no longer breakable. "You're afraid. I see it now. Every time Alexandria talks, your mask slips." He stumbled in his step.
