Edmund had been busy all day. He'd barely had enough time for work. He was either calling the logistics company to make sure that everything was in place or he was yelling at the caterers to add a few more meals to their cuisine. It was all exhausting. He wished there was some other alternative but there wasn't. His father had personally put him in charge of everything.

It was April 15th, his father's sixty-eighth birthday. Everything about the party that going to take place later that evening had been planned to the very last detail and Edmund was determined to make it a grand affair, just the way his father wanted it. Anything to make the old man happy enough to will the company to him or at least not change his mind if the will was already in his favor.

Edmund hurried down the stairs in his apartment at Hillwood Estate, buttoning his sleeves as he did so. By the time he reached the foot of the stairs, he'd finished buttoning his left sleeve. He glanced at his wristwatch before he

Edmund frowned, his eyes narrowing into slits. He'd always known that Charlotte was a bloody opportunist but not even in his wildest imagination had he figured that she would ever go this far. From the moment she made her request known, he'd lost his voice. And like a pack of cards scattered over the table, all his hopes had crashed. All he felt now was anger. Deep, intense anger."What?!" He glared at her. "Are you insane? You and I are over, Charlotte. Why don't you get used to that?"Charlotte rolled her eyes. "Is that your final answer? Because if that is what it is, then it's fine. I'll just turn around and head back into the party to tell your parents the truth."She turned to walk away but Edmund stopped her. He grabbed her by the arm, his nails almost digging into his soft, delicate skin."Wait a minute, Charlotte," he said, heaving an exasperated breath. "This doesn't have to go this way. We can come to some sort of compromise. I can pay you to buy your silence. Just name yo

Emily placed her hand on her forehead to shield herself from the unforgiving scorching rays of the sun. It was just mid-April and the sun seemed to have reached its peak in the city of Washington DC. She hitchhiked on the road for a bit until a taxi stopped before her. Emily slipped away her sunglasses which she'd worn because of her prolonged stay out in the sun. "I'm going to Hillwood Estate," she said to the cabman. He appeared to think for a moment. "Gonna cost you twenty bucks." He had a thick Texas accent. Emily's eyes widened. "Twenty what?" She heaved a frustrated sigh. "You're tripping, right?" Without saying another word, the cabman returned his face to the road and zoomed off. She'd barely removed her head from his window just in time to stop him from snapping it from her neck. Emily cursed under her breath. Her car had broken down and she didn't have insurance to cover it. She'd had one, but she'd not funded it for a couple of months. She reconsidered the decision

Edmund stared back at her in defiance."You need to leave, Charlotte," he said, fixing her a cold stare. "The deal is off."Charlotte stated back at him in disbelief, her eyes boring into his."You're joking, right?""I'm afraid not," he retorted, his voice firm. "I don't want the deal with you anymore. Surely, you of all people understand that."Charlotte studied him for a long moment, unable to find her voice."What changed your mind? Her?" She laughed sarcastically. "You think she cares about you more than I care about you?""There is no relationship between me an

Ronnie Hartman stared blankly at the computer screen before him. The name of the file read: Confidential: Emily Peterson.Just seeing that name on the screen made his blood run cold. He was sitting inside his bedroom in his moderate apartment. There was a guestroom and a sitting room just one hallway away. It was matchday but he'd exited the sitting room just a few minutes ago to have some time to himself to think, but more than that, he wanted to work.He reminisced on what had happened a few days ago at work when his boss had called him into his office and sent him on an errand that had taken him by utter surprise, not merely because of the type of work he wanted him to do, but because of who it involved.Emily Peterson, the one name that had haunted his dreams for the past two nights was the person he was asked to keep an eye on, although he would have preferred the word 'investigate.' That was what this was. An illegal investigation to look for something that did not exist.Perha

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET MISTRESS    DESPERATE TIMES

The night dragged unbelievably slowly until dawn settled on the Earth. Emily Peterson woke up with a throbbing headache. She sat up on the bed and leaned back on the bed rest. She glanced over and saw Edmund lying beside her, snoring softly. It took a moment for everything to come back to her. Edmund had been gone from his office for up to thirty minutes. When he'd returned, he was unusually calm and sullen. She'd been forced to ask what that was about and who Charlotte was but Edmund had said nothing, at least nothing that made sense to her. Only that she was an aggrieved ex who was facing some financial trouble and needed a place to crash in for a while. Of course, it did not make sense to Emily but judging from the redness of Edmund's eyes, she could tell that this was probably not the best time to push the discussion. Edmund disappeared for the rest of the day. He gave her his office to work in and informed the cook to serve her lunch and dinner. He reappeared at about 9 pm, and

He gritted his teeth to stop himself from cursing under his breath. He'd done that already for the umpteenth time. His head was about to explode. How could she lie to him?His mind steered away to the many explanations of what might be going on, but none made sense. Emily had never cheated on him, not even once. So, what was the motive this time? Who was the man that was trying to steal her away from him?The more he thought about it, the more it made him mad. He pictured him placing her on the wall and nestling in with her like he usually did, placing his filthy hands all over her creamy skin and making love to her.Amidst all his attempts to stop himself from cursing under his breath, Jason cursed again in frustration. He yearned to break something, anything, to let out all the anger he felt. But looking around him, there was no material thing that could take the full weight of his wrath. He squeezed his eyes shut, blocking out the rear of the world and pictured Emily the way he'd a

"There's no need to be uptight, Charlotte," Detective Randall Harrington said. He managed a smile. "We're on the same page here."Charlotte appeared to be thinking. On second thoughts, she said, "I'll have some tea.""Of course."He disappeared to the dining room across from the sitting room and returned a moment later with a glass of tea. He handed her the cup of sweet tea and tried not to stare at her full sensual lips as she sipped from the steaming glass.Beautiful was the wrong word for this petite brunette. She was sexy. Painfully sexy. She was creamy skin and velvet softness and quivering vulnerable femininity, every inch of a lady. The only incongruous note about her was her attitude. Beneath her four-hundred-dollar coat, this woman was cocky to the bone. She reminded him of his wife, Amelia. Like him, she came from stinking wealth and her advantage in life rubbed off hugely on her personality. It was her cockiness and his inability to stick with her alone that had caused his

Rayne Parker stood before the counter and gazed out the window. It was a beautiful spring morning at California Avenue with omens of summer everywhere. On each side of the road running from California Avenue down to Lincoln Drive, bright pink blossoms were already bursting forth over the whitewashed walls of the houses. Rayne had often been struck by those whitewashed walls. It seemed incongruous to have such humble exteriors surrounding such lavish mansions, each one stuffed full of every luxury money could buy.Rayne worked at one of such mansions. It was a shopping mall, albeit not an ordinary one. They sold things ranging from groceries to superficial things like cosmetics and every manner of luxury clothing. She'd started working here about a year before and there was only one regular set of customers that she was accustomed to. She recognized them when she saw them. They always had that same look of unbothered regret on their faces. They regretted what they did but they were n

But the most demanding of them all was Edmund, maybe because she was betrayed on a very personal level. He refused to give in to her show of being hurt and continued to probe her to know what was going on."I'm sorry I lied," she said, making an effort to speak. "I didn't mean to lie. And I'm very sorry about it. ""What do you mean by you didn't mean to lie?" Edmund probed. "You did what you did with very clear eyes, so why are you pretending that it was a mistake now?"
