CREIGHTON

I'm naked in bed, waiting for Gwen, when I hear her voice coming from the bathroom. She is singing.

Even though it's drowned out by the water, glass, and walls between us, I can tell it's heartbroken and sad for her grandmother. I didn't realize what kind of emotional baggage someone so young could carry, but it's impossible to ignore. She's not broken, but she thinks she is.

The sound of her voice has me heading to the bathroom to join her.

Steam fills the shower, but I can see her clearly enough to see her wash the shampoo out of her hair. As the foam slides down her body, her voice goes quiet before she stops. I wonder if she notices I'm watching, but instead she presses both hands to the wall and leans forward.

In that moment, I know the water is drowning her tears, and I feel an urge I've never felt toward someone unfamiliar: the urge to comfort. I wiped away my little sister's tears as a child, but I never expected another woman to affect me this way.

There is some truth to that.Though I'm sure there are some more decent than others out there. Perhaps. Mine are the sharks, so they don't count.“So she's a smart girl, wants to make her mark without her big brother?” Gwen asks.“Yes, that's exactly it. But she can't change her last name, so she doesn't escape it completely.A part of me thinks Greer requests the hardest projects with the craziest hours just so she can prove herself. It would definitely be in line with his character."So she can make fun of you and not end up on the wrong end of your death stare?"“Death stare?” I tilt my head. "Is that what you call it?"Gwen shakes her head, biting her lip.“You know I do; he says “ stop talking or you'll be sorry. “—Oh. This is the look of death. “I know exactly what she's talking about. "It works, doesn't it?" I look her over, and at least do my best while I'm trying not to laugh.“Not anymore, that doesn't happen.“Let's see about that. So besides your sister, who else?I have

Gwen rubbed her eyes impatiently. Staring at her laptop for hours, she sifted through job offers for secretary or assistant – positions that paid a little more than minimum wage. Living in New York is expensive, no matter what neighborhood you live in. At times over the last few months, she'd thought about moving somewhere else, but in her late thirties with a young child, she wasn't sure she was ready to start over. Besides, she loved her city and wasn't ready to admit defeat. At least not yet. Turning her attention back to her job search, Gwen clicked to refresh the page and was happy to see a new proposal published. Reading the long description for the secretary position of a very busy executive, her eyes widened when she saw the salary offered. She thought about how much her savings had dwindled to almost nothing in the last few months and how quickly she could replenish it again. "I found a!" she announced to her sister, Alyssa, as she tucked her long, curly, red hair behind

The next morning, Gwen woke up to the sound of her cell phone. Sitting on the bed and picking up the handset, she barely saw an unknown number. It was only eight in the morning, so she considered ignoring the call and going back to sleep."Who could it be?" she thought to herself as she tried to figure out who the number belonged to. Feeling dizzy, she rubbed her eyes, yawned and exhaled loudly before hitting the “answer” button on her cell phone."Hello?" he asked as he heard his upstairs neighbors yelling over his head.“Yes, may I speak with Gwen , please?”a woman with a foreign accent asked politely.“I'm Gwen, how can I help you?” replied cordially.“Miss , my name is Amelia. I'm calling in response to your inquiry about job availability at Denisov International,” the woman said succinctly.“Yes, I sent my resume yesterday; thank you for responding so quickly,” Gwen's energy level soared. She felt as if there really was a light at the end of the long tunnel she had been travel

“Alexander Denisov,” he introduced himself confidently. Her attitude was professional, assertive and downright sexy. Gwen looked him up and down as she squeezed his hand. About six feet tall, he estimated. Her heels made her measure 1.80 meters – and that man made her feel smaller by smiling in her direction. The cut of his suit suited him so well, she wondered if he'd had it custom-made or just altered. He smiled at Gwen easily and, as his deep blue eyes started to close, he winked at her. As they shook hands, she glanced at his wavy dark brown hair and found herself wondering if they wereas thick and smooth as they looked'You know, they say the eyes are the window to the soul,' he commented softly as he held her hand. Gwen's cheeks flushed when she noticed his smile, which seemed to indicate that he had noticed her gazes. She became nervous, feeling as if he could read her thoughts – she thought about how much she could be wasting with this attitude.Gwen almost melted when he smi

Gwen walked out of the downtown building as if she had a spring in her feet. The fifty thousand dollars a year salary was like a dream come true, and with the potential to add up any time soon, she was already thinking about how she would spend the money. While walking home, he decided to play a prank on his sister. She went up to the first floor, where the apartment was, with her eyes downcast as her sister got up.approached. He shook his head in despair and Alyssa rubbed his shoulder.“Move forward, Lana, other opportunities will present themselves.”“Yes, but do they pay fifty thousand dollars a year like this job you were asked to do today?” he teased as the pitch of his voice rose with enthusiasm. The two jumped together.“Did you get the job?” Alyssa screamed as she danced. "Tell me everything."They sat on the couch. Gwen laughed as she described her role and blushed as she talked about how handsome her new boss was. “Lys, I didn't think this was possible, but he's so much nic

Gwen spent the rest of the day splitting her time between Amelia's instructions and Alexander's constant yelling about different things. She laughed at the many times she caught her boss pouting when she didn't respond quickly enough, and thanks to Amelia's work diary and calendar, she was better able to understand what kind of activities he was doing during the day and knew that with the Days passed, your reaction time would be shorter.Standing quietly, she waited for Alexander to finish his phone. Since her back was turned, Gwen took him by surprise when he turned his chair and her name was already on the tip of his tongue. Smiling smugly, sheHe handed her the file Amelia had said her brother would need – and her dazzling smile as she took the papers almost took his breath away.“Yes, I could get used to looks like that,” she told herself and paused to make sure she hadn't spoken aloud. Arriving at work, Gwen stopped by the Human Resources department to find out what the protocol was for hiring an assistant. The HR manager was happy to fill her in on basic expectations for the role and salary range, but was reluctant to let Gwen do the job posting and interviews alone, mentioning company policies and state laws. After a long discussion and promises to keep them informed of every step, he went upstairs with the usernames and passwords needed for the job sites the company used.By the time Gwen arrived at her desk, she already had a long list of skills required for an assistant, which included attention to detail and basic office skills. She wanted an assistant who was an extension of herself, of how she was being for Alexander. The work hours rushed by and she felt like she was walking on eggshells with Alexander, who was very irritated at a phone call she'd overheard. Despite the fact that he was yelling in Russian, he didn't seem to mince words on his side of the co

“How long now, Mom? How much time?" At Roman's insistent question, she huffed as she fought the pain to answer.“What your mother is trying to say is that she doesn't know, but she hopes it's soon,” Alexander told the boy, who was looking at Gwen gasping in pain in the hospital bed.“Little boy, you really shouldn't be here,” the nurse scolded and Roman pouted.“But I want to see my new little brother.”“Soon, young man, your mother is almost done,” the nurse said, smiling.“When, Mom?” he asked once more.Gwen suddenly gasped, startling Roman, who started to cry. Picking him up, Alyssa bent them over the hospital bed and gave her sister a kiss.“Wish Mom luck, Roman. We'll be in the children's room waiting,” he told them before quickly pulling the child out of the room. After they left, Alexander sat next to Gwen and patted her head. Gwen woke to the sound of children's laughter. Opening her eyes, she saw Roman looking at her with a goofy smile on his face.“Dad and Aunt Melia are making breakfast,” he announced as she blinked sleepily.Tucking the blanket around herself, she sat up and Roman climbed into bed with her."And even? Are you sure they didn't have someone else do it for us?Shaking her head, “No, Mom. They are the only ones in the kitchen. Aunt Lyssa said to take you to see it. She said they are fighting like children.” And with that, Roman chuckled before jumping off the bed and runningby the door. Stopping, he turned and looked at her, "Are you coming?"Laughing, "Yeah baby I'm on my way."“You know, when my baby brother comes, you won't be able to call me baby anymore, ever,” he scolded.Looking at him, "How do you know it's not a little sister?"Straight to his feet, he threw back his shoulders, “I just know. Gwen looked at herself in the full-length mirror, lost in thought. That was it. That was really it. He hugged himself lightly.“Hurry up, Mom. We're going to be late,” Roman scolded her, who turned to look at him dressed in his little suit.“Oh, my God, you look so beautiful,” she whispered to him as she blinked with tears in her eyes, which threatened to fall. He smiled at his sister, who was standing in the doorway behind him in a black cocktail dress.“You look beautiful, sister. I just wish Grandma were here to see her in her wedding dress. It's perfect on you.”Turning to look at herself in the mirror, Gwen smiled at her soon-to-be sister-in-law, who adjusted her veil and wreath.“Your sister is right. You're every inch perfect,” Amelia said as she fiddled with her veil.“I'm glad grandma was bigger than me. There was enough fabric to update the dress and still have some room for my growing baby.”“Mommy…” Roman called impatiently and everyone laughed.“I'm coming, honey. This is

“This has been weeks, Gwen! I can't believe you kept it a secret from me for so long. I am your sister!" Alyssa started complaining as soon as she found out that Alexander was hiding in her family's cabin, and didn't stop until they started the three hour drive.“Look, I know you're upset,” Gwen began."Upset?" sister interrupted. “What if something happened to you?”voice started to get shrill, waking Roman, who was in the backseat.“Shhh… I get it. You're mad, but Ihad a good reason.”“Oh? Please tell me, what was it?”"Agent Franklin and the FBI said not to tell anyone."“Oh.”Surprised at how quickly her sister stopped talking, Gwen started to laugh, which made her irritable again. As Alyssa began another speech, a soft groan was heard from the backseat.“Aunt Lys, stop fighting with Mom. She doesn't feel well.”Gwen froze, looking at her distracted son in the rearview mirror.“I told you, Roman, Mom is fine.”“No, you are not.” She noticed that

He opened his mouth to speak, but closed it again and took another deep breath.Taking her hand, Gwen squeezed it. "It cannotbe so bad. Start at the beginning.” He squeezed her hand back and smiled at her.“To start from the beginning, we need to go back to our childhood. My brother was never a good kid. From a very young age, he was always in trouble. The children around her were always hurt. Pets disappeared. My parents never said anything, but I think they knew. Then one day our sister, Amelia, fell into the lake. It was winter and sh

Even though she was pretty sure she would see Alexander, after everything that had happened in the last week, she couldn't be one hundred percent sure. When the cab dropped her off in front of The New Yorker, she smiled, certain it was Alexander. Entering the Art Deco hotel, he immediately remembered his days without Miami and took the elevator to the second floor. Outside the room, she hesitated, not knowing what to expect. As he walked to his apartment, he thought about what he would tell his sister. Alayssa was famous for finding out when something was wrong and was ruthless when it came to getting answers. Both traits would make her a good lawyer in the future - but at the moment Gwen wasn't ready for her curiosity.“Let's see how it goes,” she told herself in a low voice as she fumbled with the keys before entering the apartment. Her first thoughts were of her son, Roman, and Gwen hoped he was snuggled firmly into her bed. I wanted to sneak in and gostraight to the bedroom, without interruption; her nerves had been on edge ever since she'd seen the armed police scrutinizing the place. She wished this image were erased from her mind and lied to herself that a good night's sleep could do such a feat.He took a deep breath as he closed the door. Gwen watched in horror as Alexander was handcuffed and quickly escorted from the room. Feeling paralyzed, she watched helplessly as men moved through the rooms, shouting “clean” in each one.“Was it just the two of you here tonight?” an officer asked. She had a lost look for a while before she was able to answer.“Yes,” he said in a low voice. He felt that his heart wanted to beat out of his chest. Gwen had no idea what Alexander had done to necessitate the use of so many police. She felt her face flush, sitting and not believing what was happening."Madam?" the policeman asked as he trieddesperately to bring Gwen back to reality. "Can you hear me?"Waving his hand in front of her, he tried to get her attention. She heard him mumbling vaguely, but she couldn't make out what he said. She shook her head from side to side and focused on the tall, elderly man who had invaded her night.“Yes, forgive me, what?” he asked when he realized it wasn't a sick, crooked joke.“My name is Officer

Saturday dragged on at a snail's pace, and Gwen felt a nervous energy rise within her. She didn't know why this meeting seemed so important to her; perhaps because it had been planned rather than spontaneous. After a shower, she dressed carefully for dinner, slipping into the black lace dress that hugged her curves. She adjusted the sleeves that fell over her shoulders so that the top of the dress hugged the bodice, slipped on her Louboutins and admired herself in front of the mirror. Once again, she decided to wear her hair down and arranged it seductively around her shoulders and back. Checked her makeup, satisfied with the new eyeliner, which enhanced your eyes. She added some blush to give her skin some color, finished with new lipstick and her favorite perfume. Both gifts from the sister. "Are you sure you're not madly in love with this guy?" Alyssa asked while whistling in appreciation. “I'm not madly in love with this guy,” Gwen replied firmly. Inside, she felt like a school
