Chapter 3
Secret exposed!
“Why am I not hearing a woman's voice? Could he be talking to himself, or maybe watching a movie? But what a coincidence that his movie will be talking about signing a divorce paper.” Lila's mind was buried in thoughts.
Her chest was burning like fury; she felt like pushing the door and pouring acid on whoever was behind the crashing of her marriage. But a sudden thought came to her: that action would only lead her into more trouble, as she would be charged with a case of murder and might be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Sounds of kisses and moans continued. She was dazed to hear her husband moan and scream a woman's name, something he had never done while married to her for a whole three years, making promises of giving her heaven on earth. Lila was just imagining how her husband was on top of another woman, banging her like one who had been starved of s*x for decades.
“I don't know how dumb she is not to have known that we're in a relationship. Poor girl, she must have thought that the attention you were giving her back then was out of love,” the woman said.
"Kaycee, my love, I'm grateful you waited patiently for me to divorce her. She never knew I was only there for the little money; if not, I'd have nothing to do with an unexposed and ugly person like her. My love for you is eternal.” Grey said.
“I can't wait to have my complete family with you. At least I can play a full father role in my daughter's life.” He added.
The woman's voice sounded familiar to her, but she couldn't remember knowing any woman that bore such a name as “Kaycee.”
And she had never seen a contact on her husband's phone like Kaycee.
“What a fuck? Grey has a daughter somewhere.”
The statements provoked Lila to push the door with her whole strength, like one who was running away from danger, only to see two unclad adults, her husband and her half-sister, on her matrimonial bed.
“Cynthia!” Lila shouted.
Cynthia immediately jumped down from the bed and wrapped herself in a blanket. Grey sat on the bed and stared at Lila without any atom of fear or remorse.
“Lila, I'm sorry. Please forgive me. It was never my intention for you to discover us this way.” Cynthia pleaded with a remorseful face.
Without any reply, Lila landed a heavy slap on Cynthia's face, with the design of her five fingers mapped around her face.
“I can't believe that my blood is the cause of my misery in marriage. You address my husband as an uncle, saying that he's just like a second father to you, yet you have the mind to do this to me? Besides, who is the father of Janell?” Lila became furious at her.
“Don't you dare try that shit again. Yes, she's your sister, but I find love and peace with her. At least, I can wake up every morning and hear a child's voice calling me "Daddy," something you failed to offer for a whole period of three years.
He stood up and embraced Cynthia, consoling her.
Janell is Cynthia's two-year-old daughter.
Cynthia conceived her when she was in her final year at the university. Every effort to make Cynthia reveal who was responsible for her pregnancy proved abortive. She open-mindedly told her family that she'd be forced to harm the baby and end her life if they continued to disturb her about the child's paternity if that was a secret she had decided to keep to herself.
Even though Lila and Cynthia are not always on good terms, Lila was good to her during her pregnancy and delivery. If not for Lila's persistent plea with her knees on the ground, their father would have denied Cynthia the right to have an illegitimate child. Even Mrs. Elena, Cynthia's mother, despised her for bringing shame to the family by conceiving a bastard, but that was just an act because she was fully aware of the father of Cynthia's baby. Mrs. Elena was just putting up those attitudes so that Cynthia's father would not think that she was supporting her daughter's bad character. Lila was the only one in the family who gave her full support and attention during her pregnancy. She loved and adored her niece, Janell. Despite her husband's cruelty to her, he was always nice to Janell and Cynthia. But that didn't give her a reason to suspect something wrong, for she thought it was a normal regard a man gives to his in-laws.
Lila went straight to her wardrobe and arranged her things.
She carried her box and stood at the door. Looking at how remorseful her husband was, her eyes started producing water, but she summoned all her courage and never let her cheeks feel the rolling of her tears. She had to be brave so that she wouldn't be laughed at. She needs to make Grey feel that she is also tired of the union and is ready for divorce.
“I wish you good luck,” she told them as she descended the stairs with her two boxes.
“Dan, how long has this been going on?” She asked their gateman, who opened the door for her, to leave.
“M…….ma, I…I..I”
“There is no need to be afraid. I'll not confront your boss or his mother. So, your job is safe. I just need to know how long this has been going on.” She cut him short of his words because she could sense fear in his voice as he was stammering already.
“Ok, ma, this has been going on since the first time Cynthia visited you two months after your marriage. Since then, all those three days and one week of business trips that my boss used to go on are not truly business trips, but the driver has to always be carrying him to the apartment he rented for her in the state capital.” Dan exposed everything to her.
“Ok, thank you. Take care of yourself.” She squeezed five thousand dollars in her hands and gave them to him as she left.
“Aww. I love what I'm perceiving. Wow! This is the perfect definition of a delicacy.” Charia said as she stepped into the living room.
“You're not serious!” Lila said as she laughed.
“You don't even know what I'm cooking, and you're calling it a delicacy already. What if you discover that I was only boiling water? I thought that as we're all grown now, your love for food might have deteriorated.” She added.
“Aww, my joy is that I can finally see my friend smiling. So tell me, how did it go? Were you able to give him the papers? Charia asked.
Chapter 4. Divorce conditions.“I know you had a long day. Why don't you take a shower and eat first? Then we can talk for all the hours that we like before we catch some sleep.” Lila wants Charia to eat first because she knows that once she narrates what happened to her, Charia will not enjoy the food as she should again. They both sat at the table and ate the delicacy made by Lila.“Oh, thank you so much for this sumptuous meal. Now, it is time to tell me how your day went.” Charia said.“Well, my day was not bad, since I didn't end up taking someone's life,” Lila answered."Like, what do you mean by taking someone's life? Did you have an accident on the road?”“Accidents would have been better. I'm talking about using my bare hands to kill someone.” Lila reiterated.“Please, maybe I'll understand you better if you stop talking in parables,” Charia said.“Okay, the simple explanation is that, finally, I was able to know the reason behind my marriage crash.” “Like seriously! Did h
Chapter 5I LOVE HIM“No! This is absolute bull shit! She must be stupid to think that I'll agree to all these conditions!” Grey yelled, throwing the paper on the bedside table and hitting the walls with his hands over and over again. The sound of his scream was so loud that it scared Cynthia who was in the kitchen with his mother. They ran upstairs to ask what was all the shouting for.“She is trying my patience and pushing me to the wall. Just take a look at what she's demanding before she'll sign the papers. Her plan is to render me bankrupt, but that will never happen.” He handed the pieces of papers to Cynthia which they both read with his mother.“Impossible! She wants to take over the company as well? I thought the company was in your name?” His mother asked.“That's why I said it must be unreasonable to think that I'll just give her what she demands on a platter of gold. The company is mine and will forever be mine” Grey added, hitting the table with his hands.Cynthia became
Chapter 6 moving on“Why do you have to run after that witch and beg her? Don't tell me you're afraid of her already.” Grey questioned Cynthia as she came back, looking sorry.“Believe me, she's just an empty talking drum. She can do nothing.” He added. After a long gaze, Cynthia nodded her head in agreement with his statements.“I know, but you can never underestimate the words of an angry woman, especially when it has to do with her marriage.” Cynthia's mind was overpowered by fear.Grey drew her closer, placing one hand on her belly and the other around her waist. He gave her a passionate kiss on the forehead.“You're my world, honey, and I'll always be there for you and our children. Don't mind that ugly sister of yours; I know how to handle her.” He concluded, and Cynthia heaved a sigh of relief, but deep down in her mind, she's afraid for her unborn child. She went into the ward to meet her mother, who was seated beside her dying father.“I'm sorry, Daddy. I'm sorry that you h
Chapter 7Flashback Ten years ago, driven with excitement and joy at securing admission to the university and running to share the good news with her father, poor Lila saw herself on the ground, lying helpless, as she got hit by a speeding vehicle.“Hey, are you okay? I'm sorry, my dear.” She heard the consoling voice of a man from behind, trying to lift her.“Thank you so much, sir. I'm fine. I'll just walk carefully down the street, Lila replied.“Com'on, I can walk you home if you want. Besides, I'm Grey Shun, also a newly admitted student.” He extended his hands for a handshake with Lila.Lila became nervous, feeling too shy to look at his face. How lucky was she to have attracted the compassion of such a handsome man? Yes, Grey is the pure definition of handsomeness. It is hard for a group of four girls to see him, and three will not have an instant desire for him.Since the death of her mother, a great gap has been created between Lila and love. Her father was so affected by th
Chapter 8Lila, being a good and considerate daughter-in-law, heeds her soon-to-be mother-in-law's plight and strategizes a way to balance family life and work.In her traditionally white and long train wedding dress, the most handsome man stood in front of her, rallying his hands over her waist. He locked his tongue into hers, giving her a passionate kiss.“Thank you for officially accepting the call into Shun's family. My love for you knows no bounds.” Grey confessed, and their tongues were locked into each other again. Gently landing her on the new sofa, specially bought and dressed with new bed sheets for their wedding night, he unhooked the wedding dress and all her inners, revealing the captivating figure eight that has been getting all men's attention in skirts. That was the sweetest and the only best day Lila could talk of when it came to her marriage with Grey.As the good wife that she is, Lila woke up as early as five o’clock and made her first breakfast for Shun's family b
Chapter 9Little Witch Grey was confused at how things were just turning around within seconds. “Did I do wrong by marrying Lila?” He questioned himself.“And if at all you're interested in the explanation, do well by calling that little witch of a wife to come down as well.” The voice was added.“Mum, I never knew you were awake. I thought you were still sleeping. Sorry, mom, how're you feeling now?” Grey asked, stepping forward to hold his mother's hands as she struggled to bring herself to the living room.“I'm sorry, I was in a business meeting with our foreign clients when Ann informed me. of your predicament, so I had to tell my wife to rush down to the hospital immediately to check on you.”“Grey, you know why I'm out here. I'm not here to answer your greetings or tell you how I feel now. I heard you demanding an explanation from Ann, so I think it would be best if you could get the attention of the subject in question. Mrs. Shun replied.“Mum, where is all this coming from?
Chapter 10.It is Finished In the quiet hours of the evening, Lila sat down on the veranda of Shun's mansion, watching how the leaves of the tree were dancing to the blowing breeze. With her glass of wine, she sat and read her favourite novel, thinking of the tribulations she was facing in her marriage.“Had she known that things would go as sour as this, she wouldn't have rushed to marry at all; perhaps she would have been lucky to marry someone who deserves her true love and will treat her like a queen.” She thought to herself. From afar, she saw her husband driving in as the gate was opened by security. Just before he could finish parking the car, his mother came out of the backyard and went to welcome her son. They talked for a few minutes before proceeding to the entrance of the house.“I'm sure she's reporting what happened today to her son," Lila thought.Fear gripped her because she was scared of how her husband would react. “If he could be so mad at me when she lied that I
“Nothing seems to affect her, Mom. It has been over five hours now since she ate, and she's still looking strong and healthy.” Grey lamented in panic. With her mouth wide open in shock, Mrs. Shun asked, “Are you sure you poisoned the food?”“Of course, yes. She's not an ordinary human, maybe.”“Could it be that she saw you when you were mixing the poison?” His mother asked again.“Not at all! Lila was searching for the licence.”Mute and shocked at the mysterious survival of Lila after eating the poisoned food, they both sat on the couch, thinking of a way out. “The maid! Mum, I think the maid knows something about this!” Grey exclaimed.“What about the maid? Why would you think she knows something about it?”“She was the only one downstairs when it happened. Think of it, mom. The food was in the dining room, but it ended up in the kitchen. I know what I'm saying. Laura is behind this.” Grey emphasised.“Laura!” Mrs. Shun shouted.“Yes, ma'am.” “To my room now.” Mrs. Shun instructed
Chapter 43Aunt Kendy felt pretty numb. Everything Lila had said seemed unnervingly ironic.“Kendy, you have to be careful of the kind of advice you offer to a person in this kind of situation. This is a critical moment in her life, and she's dependent on you now to make a good choice,” she scolded herself.Slowly and gradually, she took her hands from Lila's shoulders and moved to lean on the table, ensuring direct eye contact with Lila.“But did you tell him that you're married?” She demanded softly.“No, aunty. I had to feign having a light stomach ache, which was why he rushed me home.”“Hmmmm,” Aunt Kendy sighs.“I'll advise that you tell him the truth when next he confronts you about that again.”“Aunt Kendy! I can't do that!” Lila exclaimed.“Look, you have to do it, my dear. That's the only truth that can give you peace of mind. If he's meant for you, he'll stay, but if he's not, he'll definitely leave. Besides, you're not too sure if he's married or not, or maybe even divorce
Chapter 42Lila's heart throbbed and swelled up as the question rang in her head. Finally, a day she had earnestly prayed for never to come is here. She feigned dumb to his question and sat without saying anything, until Damian got prompted to ask a second time, “Miss Lila, why is your look on the wall so intense? You love the wall paper designs, I guess?" He said softly with a smirk.Immediately, Lila trembled and nodded as if taken unawares, “Yeah, the design. It looks really amazing, you know,” she remarked. Not until he asked the question, Lila didn't even notice the wallpaper design. What was in her mind was a different thing altogether. He stood and slouched to the fridge, which was at the right corner of the dining room, and brought out a bottle of champagne.“Alright,” he said, dropping the two glass cups on the stool while he gradually poured out the drink into them.“From now henceforth, I'm not only your boss at the office, nor are you only my staff, but we're friends! So l
Chapter 41“I'm alive because of you! Thank you, Mr. Saviour!” She exclaimed in whispers. In great exhilaration, Lila left her seat, and with her arms widely opened like a bird flying in the air, she gummed her body on Damian's in tight clasps.“Thank God you're alive! I'm sorry, I couldn't wait to see you recover,” Mr. Damian whispered, with his hands wrapped around her back and her head on his shoulders. The dim and calm blue light makes the environment extremely cozy for lovers.Lila heaved a sigh of relief, his arms offering her a comfort she had never felt in her entire life.Even her wedding night with Grey was not as enticing as this. Her heart melted; a feeling of problem-less life dawned on her.“I'm also alive because of you! Who knows, I might have passed out completely if you were not with me in the office. Thanks to Joan, right? For splashing the coffee on you,” he admitted jokingly.“Com'on, so you're now mocking me, right?” Lila chuckled as she slowly began to lose grip
Chapter 40Meeting Mr. Saviour As they made their way through the estate, their journey came to a halt in front of a 3-story building, which was remarkably outstanding in the estate because of its elegant features.“Welcome to my home, Lila,” Mr. Damian said with a smile.“Wow! This place looks really amazing,” Lila commented as they got into the well-furnished living room. She expected to see a maid or a servant step out to welcome them, but she saw none.Isn't this house too big for one person to live in?Besides, who does the cleaning and cooking for him? She thought inwardly while her gaze shifted from one angle to the other in admiration for the features on the wall.“Feel free and have your seat, Lila. I'll be with you in a short while,” Mr. Damian goes on to say before he leaves for one of the rooms on the ground floor.“Oh my God!” Lila exclaimed when she saw Mr. Damian ambled with a tray to her front. The aura in the room changed immediately by the savory of the dishes.“I k
Chapter 39Caring for her bossLila walked towards the hospital route, pondering Aunt Kendy's words. But there were some elements of truth in what she was saying! If not, why is she so attached and concerned about him more than a normal boss and staff rapport? But even if she later falls in love with him and he feels the same towards her, what would she do with her pregnancy?Of course, no single man would want to marry a divorced and pregnant woman. She felt an utmost discouragement dawning on her for keeping the pregnancy, but a sharp voice scolded her instantly, “Remember, your child is your utmost priority!”“That's true. After all, my purpose of being in this town is to re-establish myself and my career, not to fall in love.” She consoled herself and distracted her thoughts with a different thing.“Daughter of the devil!” Joan glared and hissed at Lila the moment she stepped into the hospital ward.Lila feigned deafness to her statement and proceeded to stand beside Damian's bed.
Chapter 38 Strong Attachment In a nick of time, Joan had taken a few steps and was standing before Lila already. “How dare you call me ugly?" Joan yelled with her hands raised to land a slap on Lila's face. “You dare not try that!” Lila said coldly as soon as she blocked the hands from reaching her face. “I was only advising you, and you can try that and thank me later, you ugly bitch!” Lila remarked and flung her hands down. The fluorescent lights buzzed as Lila settled into her cubicle. The office looked a bit strange to her. She can't believe that Mr. Anthonio had ordered for some items to be moved from her office to his already. So that's how desperate he wanted her out of the establishment? She glanced at the clock pinned on the wall; she's got a lot of work to do that day, and time was not by her side. She wanted to start immediately but feels uncomfortable in her splattered clothes. She needs to be in clean clothes so that the environment can also smell nice for her. Sh
Chapter 37Joan's Hatred“What's so special about the paper that you wanted to keep it hidden, Lila? Com'on, even divorce papers are no longer kept hidden nowadays,” Joan goaded with a wicked smile. She stood and watched Lila's hand tremble as they stretched to present the paper to Mr. Damian. Although the content is known to her already.“What the hell is this? Termination of appointment! Who gave you this?” Mr. Damian exclaimed. His neutral expression was gradually turning fierce as he sat with annoyance and the chair creaked in protest. “Mr. Anthonio gave it to me, sir,” Lila responded with a stammering voice.Mr. Damian scoffed and paused for a while. “You're barely a month into the job! What must you have done to attract a sack letter?” He demanded with his brows knitted and nostrils widened.“I came late to work, sir. He said I don't deserve the work if I should start coming late at this early stage,” Lila explained in soft sobs within her mind.“So was that why you were leavi
Chapter 36 Joan Again “Cheer up, Lila. Remember the promise you made to your unborn child? You can't let someone influence you to break it!” A voice in her whispered, and her strength and smiles were restored the moment she had a flashback of the promise.Lila had promised her unborn child since the day she learned of his conception that she would never allow him to see frustration no matter what.“Don't worry, baby, I'll shower you with all the love that you need to live and grow. I promise not to let anger and frustration near you,” were her words the first time she held the pregnancy test results in her hands. Never! She'll never allow her child to see her in an angry and depressed mood. She quietly moved to the restroom in the passage to wear her clothes in the proper way before she'd finally vacate the premises. “Here are your keys,” she said with a frown and flushed the keys on Mr. Anthonio's table before slamming the door behind her.Thinking of informing Mr. Damian, who ha
Chapter 35“No way! I can never let them go free with these disastrous plans. For this, I'll be forced to avenge even my mother's death!” Lila said to herself as she lay on the big sofa in her room, going through the soft copy of some company's documents that needed her attention. She tried to focus but she couldn't. Her mind was still reflecting on the fact that Ma'am Elena would despise her family so much that they would want she and her father's deaths at all costs. She's struggling as much to grab some sleep so that she won't be dozing off at work, but the sleep was not coming. And that has been one of her biggest fears. Anytime she's working, she always tries to get enough rest to avoid wearing a dull face at work the next day.“Jeez! It's 7:00am already!” Lila exclaimed and stumbled out of the bed the moment she heard the knock on her door and decided to check out for time on her phone, which was situated on the bedside table.“Gosh! I just pray I don't start by receiving a quer
