Chapter 3
Secret exposed!
“Why am I not hearing a woman's voice? Could he be talking to himself, or maybe watching a movie? But what a coincidence that his movie will be talking about signing a divorce paper.” Lila's mind was buried in thoughts.
Her chest was burning like fury; she felt like pushing the door and pouring acid on whoever was behind the crashing of her marriage. But a sudden thought came to her: that action would only lead her into more trouble, as she would be charged with a case of murder and might be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Sounds of kisses and moans continued. She was dazed to hear her husband moan and scream a woman's name, something he had never done while married to her for a whole three years, making promises of giving her heaven on earth. Lila was just imagining how her husband was on top of another woman, banging her like one who had been starved of s*x for decades.
“I don't know how dumb she is not to have known that we're in a relationship. Poor girl, she must have thought that the attention you were giving her back then was out of love,” the woman said.
"Kaycee, my love, I'm grateful you waited patiently for me to divorce her. She never knew I was only there for the little money; if not, I'd have nothing to do with an unexposed and ugly person like her. My love for you is eternal.” Grey said.
“I can't wait to have my complete family with you. At least I can play a full father role in my daughter's life.” He added.
The woman's voice sounded familiar to her, but she couldn't remember knowing any woman that bore such a name as “Kaycee.”
And she had never seen a contact on her husband's phone like Kaycee.
“What a fuck? Grey has a daughter somewhere.”
The statements provoked Lila to push the door with her whole strength, like one who was running away from danger, only to see two unclad adults, her husband and her half-sister, on her matrimonial bed.
“Cynthia!” Lila shouted.
Cynthia immediately jumped down from the bed and wrapped herself in a blanket. Grey sat on the bed and stared at Lila without any atom of fear or remorse.
“Lila, I'm sorry. Please forgive me. It was never my intention for you to discover us this way.” Cynthia pleaded with a remorseful face.
Without any reply, Lila landed a heavy slap on Cynthia's face, with the design of her five fingers mapped around her face.
“I can't believe that my blood is the cause of my misery in marriage. You address my husband as an uncle, saying that he's just like a second father to you, yet you have the mind to do this to me? Besides, who is the father of Janell?” Lila became furious at her.
“Don't you dare try that shit again. Yes, she's your sister, but I find love and peace with her. At least, I can wake up every morning and hear a child's voice calling me "Daddy," something you failed to offer for a whole period of three years.
He stood up and embraced Cynthia, consoling her.
Janell is Cynthia's two-year-old daughter.
Cynthia conceived her when she was in her final year at the university. Every effort to make Cynthia reveal who was responsible for her pregnancy proved abortive. She open-mindedly told her family that she'd be forced to harm the baby and end her life if they continued to disturb her about the child's paternity if that was a secret she had decided to keep to herself.
Even though Lila and Cynthia are not always on good terms, Lila was good to her during her pregnancy and delivery. If not for Lila's persistent plea with her knees on the ground, their father would have denied Cynthia the right to have an illegitimate child. Even Mrs. Elena, Cynthia's mother, despised her for bringing shame to the family by conceiving a bastard, but that was just an act because she was fully aware of the father of Cynthia's baby. Mrs. Elena was just putting up those attitudes so that Cynthia's father would not think that she was supporting her daughter's bad character. Lila was the only one in the family who gave her full support and attention during her pregnancy. She loved and adored her niece, Janell. Despite her husband's cruelty to her, he was always nice to Janell and Cynthia. But that didn't give her a reason to suspect something wrong, for she thought it was a normal regard a man gives to his in-laws.
Lila went straight to her wardrobe and arranged her things.
She carried her box and stood at the door. Looking at how remorseful her husband was, her eyes started producing water, but she summoned all her courage and never let her cheeks feel the rolling of her tears. She had to be brave so that she wouldn't be laughed at. She needs to make Grey feel that she is also tired of the union and is ready for divorce.
“I wish you good luck,” she told them as she descended the stairs with her two boxes.
“Dan, how long has this been going on?” She asked their gateman, who opened the door for her, to leave.
“M…….ma, I…I..I”
“There is no need to be afraid. I'll not confront your boss or his mother. So, your job is safe. I just need to know how long this has been going on.” She cut him short of his words because she could sense fear in his voice as he was stammering already.
“Ok, ma, this has been going on since the first time Cynthia visited you two months after your marriage. Since then, all those three days and one week of business trips that my boss used to go on are not truly business trips, but the driver has to always be carrying him to the apartment he rented for her in the state capital.” Dan exposed everything to her.
“Ok, thank you. Take care of yourself.” She squeezed five thousand dollars in her hands and gave them to him as she left.
“Aww. I love what I'm perceiving. Wow! This is the perfect definition of a delicacy.” Charia said as she stepped into the living room.
“You're not serious!” Lila said as she laughed.
“You don't even know what I'm cooking, and you're calling it a delicacy already. What if you discover that I was only boiling water? I thought that as we're all grown now, your love for food might have deteriorated.” She added.
“Aww, my joy is that I can finally see my friend smiling. So tell me, how did it go? Were you able to give him the papers? Charia asked.
Chapter 4. Divorce conditions.“I know you had a long day. Why don't you take a shower and eat first? Then we can talk for all the hours that we like before we catch some sleep.” Lila wants Charia to eat first because she knows that once she narrates what happened to her, Charia will not enjoy the food as she should again. They both sat at the table and ate the delicacy made by Lila.“Oh, thank you so much for this sumptuous meal. Now, it is time to tell me how your day went.” Charia said.“Well, my day was not bad, since I didn't end up taking someone's life,” Lila answered."Like, what do you mean by taking someone's life? Did you have an accident on the road?”“Accidents would have been better. I'm talking about using my bare hands to kill someone.” Lila reiterated.“Please, maybe I'll understand you better if you stop talking in parables,” Charia said.“Okay, the simple explanation is that, finally, I was able to know the reason behind my marriage crash.” “Like seriously! Did h
Chapter 5I LOVE HIM“No! This is absolute bull shit! She must be stupid to think that I'll agree to all these conditions!” Grey yelled, throwing the paper on the bedside table and hitting the walls with his hands over and over again. The sound of his scream was so loud that it scared Cynthia who was in the kitchen with his mother. They ran upstairs to ask what was all the shouting for.“She is trying my patience and pushing me to the wall. Just take a look at what she's demanding before she'll sign the papers. Her plan is to render me bankrupt, but that will never happen.” He handed the pieces of papers to Cynthia which they both read with his mother.“Impossible! She wants to take over the company as well? I thought the company was in your name?” His mother asked.“That's why I said it must be unreasonable to think that I'll just give her what she demands on a platter of gold. The company is mine and will forever be mine” Grey added, hitting the table with his hands.Cynthia became
Chapter 6 moving on“Why do you have to run after that witch and beg her? Don't tell me you're afraid of her already.” Grey questioned Cynthia as she came back, looking sorry.“Believe me, she's just an empty talking drum. She can do nothing.” He added. After a long gaze, Cynthia nodded her head in agreement with his statements.“I know, but you can never underestimate the words of an angry woman, especially when it has to do with her marriage.” Cynthia's mind was overpowered by fear.Grey drew her closer, placing one hand on her belly and the other around her waist. He gave her a passionate kiss on the forehead.“You're my world, honey, and I'll always be there for you and our children. Don't mind that ugly sister of yours; I know how to handle her.” He concluded, and Cynthia heaved a sigh of relief, but deep down in her mind, she's afraid for her unborn child. She went into the ward to meet her mother, who was seated beside her dying father.“I'm sorry, Daddy. I'm sorry that you h
Chapter 7Flashback Ten years ago, driven with excitement and joy at securing admission to the university and running to share the good news with her father, poor Lila saw herself on the ground, lying helpless, as she got hit by a speeding vehicle.“Hey, are you okay? I'm sorry, my dear.” She heard the consoling voice of a man from behind, trying to lift her.“Thank you so much, sir. I'm fine. I'll just walk carefully down the street, Lila replied.“Com'on, I can walk you home if you want. Besides, I'm Grey Shun, also a newly admitted student.” He extended his hands for a handshake with Lila.Lila became nervous, feeling too shy to look at his face. How lucky was she to have attracted the compassion of such a handsome man? Yes, Grey is the pure definition of handsomeness. It is hard for a group of four girls to see him, and three will not have an instant desire for him.Since the death of her mother, a great gap has been created between Lila and love. Her father was so affected by th
Chapter 8Lila, being a good and considerate daughter-in-law, heeds her soon-to-be mother-in-law's plight and strategizes a way to balance family life and work.In her traditionally white and long train wedding dress, the most handsome man stood in front of her, rallying his hands over her waist. He locked his tongue into hers, giving her a passionate kiss.“Thank you for officially accepting the call into Shun's family. My love for you knows no bounds.” Grey confessed, and their tongues were locked into each other again. Gently landing her on the new sofa, specially bought and dressed with new bed sheets for their wedding night, he unhooked the wedding dress and all her inners, revealing the captivating figure eight that has been getting all men's attention in skirts. That was the sweetest and the only best day Lila could talk of when it came to her marriage with Grey.As the good wife that she is, Lila woke up as early as five o’clock and made her first breakfast for Shun's family b
Chapter 9Little Witch Grey was confused at how things were just turning around within seconds. “Did I do wrong by marrying Lila?” He questioned himself.“And if at all you're interested in the explanation, do well by calling that little witch of a wife to come down as well.” The voice was added.“Mum, I never knew you were awake. I thought you were still sleeping. Sorry, mom, how're you feeling now?” Grey asked, stepping forward to hold his mother's hands as she struggled to bring herself to the living room.“I'm sorry, I was in a business meeting with our foreign clients when Ann informed me. of your predicament, so I had to tell my wife to rush down to the hospital immediately to check on you.”“Grey, you know why I'm out here. I'm not here to answer your greetings or tell you how I feel now. I heard you demanding an explanation from Ann, so I think it would be best if you could get the attention of the subject in question. Mrs. Shun replied.“Mum, where is all this coming from?
Chapter 10.It is Finished In the quiet hours of the evening, Lila sat down on the veranda of Shun's mansion, watching how the leaves of the tree were dancing to the blowing breeze. With her glass of wine, she sat and read her favourite novel, thinking of the tribulations she was facing in her marriage.“Had she known that things would go as sour as this, she wouldn't have rushed to marry at all; perhaps she would have been lucky to marry someone who deserves her true love and will treat her like a queen.” She thought to herself. From afar, she saw her husband driving in as the gate was opened by security. Just before he could finish parking the car, his mother came out of the backyard and went to welcome her son. They talked for a few minutes before proceeding to the entrance of the house.“I'm sure she's reporting what happened today to her son," Lila thought.Fear gripped her because she was scared of how her husband would react. “If he could be so mad at me when she lied that I
“Nothing seems to affect her, Mom. It has been over five hours now since she ate, and she's still looking strong and healthy.” Grey lamented in panic. With her mouth wide open in shock, Mrs. Shun asked, “Are you sure you poisoned the food?”“Of course, yes. She's not an ordinary human, maybe.”“Could it be that she saw you when you were mixing the poison?” His mother asked again.“Not at all! Lila was searching for the licence.”Mute and shocked at the mysterious survival of Lila after eating the poisoned food, they both sat on the couch, thinking of a way out. “The maid! Mum, I think the maid knows something about this!” Grey exclaimed.“What about the maid? Why would you think she knows something about it?”“She was the only one downstairs when it happened. Think of it, mom. The food was in the dining room, but it ended up in the kitchen. I know what I'm saying. Laura is behind this.” Grey emphasised.“Laura!” Mrs. Shun shouted.“Yes, ma'am.” “To my room now.” Mrs. Shun instructed
Chapter 51“But... we weren't enemies before now, were we?” Lila asked with a mischievous smile, prompting him to talk further.“Okay, I mean—I like you, Lila. I know this may sound too fast, but… I can no longer keep it to myself,” he confessed, stretching his hands over the table to get hold of her palms.Perfect! This was the perfect opportunity Lila had been looking for to make him fall for her, and finally, she had succeeded just at her first try.“Mr. Derrick, don't you think this is rather too fast? This is just our second meeting. Lila tried to object, at least not to show that she's desperate or up to something. She knows Derrick more than he even knows himself.Upon insisting, Lila agreed to their friendship without any strings attached, and he accepted.Lila smiled with her eyes, and she continued to pick the grapes on the table, chewing them slowly.“That reminds me, are you married? You told me earlier that you came with someone,” Derrick retorted.“I'm not married, and f
Chapter 50Can we be friends? While Grey is thinking of the fastest means to capture Lila's heart, blocking Derrick, Cynthia's mind felt some relief, heaving a deep sigh of relief knowing that Lila has a man already, which means she can't drag Grey with her.“If you don't mind, can I at least take my guest to relax on a chair?” Derrick said politely with a rich smile.“Sure. Make sure you give her the best treatment she deserves, please,” Mrs. Shun said with a smile, and Derrick's arm spread wide to receive Lila's hands.“Thanks, ma'am, it's really nice meeting you,” Lila returned the warm welcome with a bright smile, and her folded dimple didn't fail to captivate Derrick and Grey's hearts.Grey watched as Derrick and Lila walked towards the VIP seat. Swaying her waist deliberately, Lila's lips curled up with a smile at each conversation Derrick initiated, not because he's sounding funny but because she can't just imagine what must be going on in Grey and his wife's mind. Slowly, she
CHAPTER 49INSTILLING FEAR“Oh, sorry, my attention was just caught by the beautiful couple standing over there,” Cynthia feigned an explanation when she saw a couple she knew walk in.“I gave them the invitation late, and I'm just surprised to see that they still made it,” she added with a faint smile, covering her guilt. She was gripped with fear; there was no way someone who had been declared dead some years ago would still be alive, right?“Well, I'm Cynthia, wife to the most handsome and richest man, as you can see, and thanks for gracing our occasion,” she said after heaving a sigh of relief, but the fear in her was still very evident.Lila nodded; the displeased frown on Grey's face for his wife's interruption was too evident to remain unnoticed by her, but that was her plan, by the way, so it gave her more satisfaction. The fear and doubt in Cynthia slowly dispelled when she quickly checked through her phone and confirmed from the pictures and the news about Lila's death some
CHAPTER 48THE RETURN FOR REVENGE Lila stood at the corner while she stared at her ex-husband, Grey, with his wife, Cynthia. She's there to watch the commissioning of the new company, the S&S Wine Empire, a collaboration of the Shuns and the Sims family. The venue was filled with men and women of the hierarchy dining harmoniously as they celebrated the new accomplishment of the Shuns and Sims family. She watched Cynthia and her mother dressed in pink alongside her ex-husband and his family. An achievement worthy of celebration to them was a heart-wrenching event for her.She felt her heart pounding in her chest whenever she saw their faces ignited with joy. The more she sees them wear a smile, the greater the pang of hatred and revenge burns in her heart. She just wished she could turn the whole table around and dismiss everyone from the hall.“Where do you think you are going? And... what are you trying to do, Lila?” A familiar voice whispered into her ear, and suddenly, she felt a
CHAPTER 47Meeting With Brian Silence and confusion were welcomed in the atmosphere for a while. Barrister Joe and Aunt Kendy were totally naive of what was going on, while Brian and Lila, on the other hand, tried to conceal the reality of them knowing each other before now.“Yes, I mean, no,” Like answered counter actively.“His face just looks familiar because I've once seen him on social media before now,” she claimed.“Yeah, she's right. I can remember her following me on all my social media handles and would always give a thumbs up to our quality product advertisements,” Brian concluded and agreed with what she said.“Wow! That's good to hear. It shows that Mrs. Lila has been in love with the company since before she even married my client. With this, I believe you'll manage it well, as my late client has always wished it to be.” Barrister Joe agreed to their explanations and commented.Lila and Damian exchanged side glances and heaved a sigh of relief for successfully convincin
CHAPTER 46His last will“I said it! I knew you were a shameless whore since the day you stepped your feet into this office! I pity you, prospective widow!” Joan sneered and spat as Lila passed through her office to get to her husband's office, Mr Damian.“You know what? At least mine is better. I'm legally married to him. But come to think of it, what do we call ladies like you who shamelessly indulge in illicit affairs with their bosses in the office, knowing fully well that those bosses can never marry them?” Lila stood and looked eyeball to eyeball before uttering those words.“How dare you!” Joan yelled angrily, lifting her hands to rain down a slap on Lila's face, but her hands got stuck up in the air as Lila prevented it from meeting her face.“Try it, and you'll see yourself walking out of this company in the next 10 minutes. Remember, your partner in crime would not be an exception to this,” Lila threatened and dropped her hands violently as she proceeded to her husband's off
Chapter 45Lila stared back at him; her heart was troubled; actually, no woman would want to be a widow at a young age, not even her.But considering the fact that God can change situations around, her fears diminished, and by the way, her love for him has outgrown words.“You're not going to make a widow out of any woman, Damian, not even me.”Damian peered at her suspiciously, trying to get a clearer meaning of what she's saying.“Fred not, Damian,” Lila said with a faint smile the moment she noticed the look on his face.“I'm not leaving you! What I mean is—" She paused and took a deep breath before she continued, “I'll love you till the end, and I want you to take away the fear of death, because you are not dying anytime soon,” she encouraged him, moving closer to let their bodies stick and lips meet in sync.“Oh, I'm sorry, I..." The door suddenly opened, and a voice stuttering words of apology echoed.Lila immediately pulled herself from the embrace, and Damian arranged his suit
CHAPTER 44Confessing the feelings Lila was quite puzzled at his words. This was a dream she least expected would ever come true.Indeed, when next they say destiny has a way of bringing people together, she wouldn't spare a moment to believe it wholeheartedly.“But,”“I know the conceptions in your mind,” Damian interrupted before Lila could even spell out what she intends to say.But Lila still looked puzzled. How can he say he knows her mind already when she was thinking beyond the ordinary?Damian locked his palms into hers. “I'll tell you all that you need to know, but just promise me one thing,” he said calmly.Lila's confusion became intense; this discussion is getting more serious than she thought.“Promise that you'll still love me even after telling you everything,” he said, peering at her.“Lila, there's no need for you to deny it. I know already that you love me.”She squinted; her mind throbbed at the severity of his demands. He's right, her love for him was obvious alr
Chapter 43Aunt Kendy felt pretty numb. Everything Lila had said seemed unnervingly ironic.“Kendy, you have to be careful of the kind of advice you offer to a person in this kind of situation. This is a critical moment in her life, and she's dependent on you now to make a good choice,” she scolded herself.Slowly and gradually, she took her hands from Lila's shoulders and moved to lean on the table, ensuring direct eye contact with Lila.“But did you tell him that you're married?” She demanded softly.“No, aunty. I had to feign having a light stomach ache, which was why he rushed me home.”“Hmmmm,” Aunt Kendy sighs.“I'll advise that you tell him the truth when next he confronts you about that again.”“Aunt Kendy! I can't do that!” Lila exclaimed.“Look, you have to do it, my dear. That's the only truth that can give you peace of mind. If he's meant for you, he'll stay, but if he's not, he'll definitely leave. Besides, you're not too sure if he's married or not, or maybe even divorce
