Zelda had been looking for a job for three days, but her search was fruitless. No one in the fashion or modelling industry would give her a chance. She had practically exhausted every contact, every opportunity. Each rejection felt like another slap in the face, another reminder that she wasn’t just fighting the industry, she was fighting James’s influence over it.

Zelda had overheard James talking with his father, casually discussing ways to keep them married and out of a divorce scandal. He wanted her back on his terms, and this was his way of reminding her of his power. But if James thought this would break her, he was wrong. Zelda was determined not to be manipulated into crawling back to him.

Thankfully, she had her friend Grace, who worked in the film industry. Grace had helped Zelda get a few odd jobs, assisting on sets and holding lights for camera crews. It wasn’t glamorous, but it kept her afloat, and it was a small step forward. On the third day of her part-time work, Zelda

Zelda narrowed her eyes at Susan, her expression challenging. But Susan, sensing the weight of everyone's eyes on her, quickly shifted her tone, softening her voice."I'm sorry, sister," she said, her words dripping with an insincere sweetness. "I hope you're not still mad about the other day. I know you didn't push me, but I was too weak. James thought you did, but I tried to explain it to him that it wasn’t your fault.""Really?" Zelda asked, her voice cool, her gaze pointedly fixed on Susan."Of course, sister," Susan continued, keeping her eyes downcast. "You know that James only cares about me, that's all."Zelda smiled, though her eyes held no warmth. "Okay, then. I want you to apologize sincerely and look me in the eye when you do it. I want you to apologize for everything."Susan hesitated, glancing toward James as if looking for backup. She clearly didn’t want to give Zelda the satisfaction of an apology, and Zelda knew it. It was a scene that brought back an old, painful mem

James looked at Zelda with a wide smile, his eyes sparkling with amusement. Zelda met his gaze, her lips pressing into a tight line as she tried to act unbothered."What?" she asked, her voice sharp and filled with an air of indifference, though she could feel the heat rising in her cheeks."Nothing," James replied, his smile never fading. "Tell me, what is it?“ She persisted.“ Are you jealous?" James asked, his eyes twinkling with a hint of teasing."Jealous? Why would I be jealous?" Zelda shot back, her voice firm as she crossed her arms over her chest. She raised an eyebrow, trying to maintain the control she so desperately wanted.James leaned in slightly, his voice lowering, a subtle challenge in his tone."Well, why were you shouting at her right now? If you're not jealous, if you don't think she’s going to steal me from you? But she can’t. I’m all yours. I am your husband, and we’re never getting divorced."Zelda’s eyes flickered with annoyance, and she raised her hand in a di

ZELDAAfter leaving James at the hospital, I found myself still wound up with tension. The hospital scene replayed in my mind, Susan clinging to James, her endless dramatics, everything had left me both drained and restless.I needed an escape. With nowhere else to go, I decided to visit the fashion design school of my mentor. Since my marriage to James, I had often found myself bored or alone, and my mentor was kind enough to let me attend her classes, sometimes even helping out with a few of them. It was a small haven I could retreat to, where I could lose myself in creativity and forget, if only for a few hours. After helping her with the day’s class, I stayed back, working on a few designs and projects that had been sitting idle. The quiet of the room began to calm me, the familiar sound of fabric rustling and the scratch of pencil on paper almost meditative. I was just getting lost in a rhythm when there was a knock on the door.It was late, past the usual class hours. I figured

I stood there, staring down at the check, its cold, crisp edges almost mocking me. Five million. Enough to free myself from James, to escape the grip he had on my life. Enough to ease my brother’s medical expenses, to build my career, to escape the manipulation and demands of others who had claimed to care for me.But as I clutched the check, I felt something else, something heavy and hollow, a deep sense of betrayal, as if I were nothing more than a pawn to be bought and sold.I thought back to just a few days ago when Helen Ferguson, James’s own mother, had offered me money to conceive a child—a grandchild she desperately wanted, not for me or James, but for her own plans. These women, women I had once seen as mother figures, sources of comfort and strength—had reduced me to a tool for their children, for their ambitions. Was that all I was to them? Disposable, a bargaining chip in their twisted games?A surge of anger replaced the hollow ache, building inside me until I couldn’t ho

James was leaning against the bed, his eyes closed. I paused, not sure if he was asleep and I walked over quickly.I placed my hand on his forehead, only to feel his feverish grip suddenly close around my wrist, his hand hot against mine. I realized he really did have a fever. Cheng was not joking.Thinking he might be awake, I leaned closer, but his eyes were still shut, his handsome face flushed, his breathing heavy. He clearly wasn’t fully conscious. Even in his sleep, he was so guarded. I let out a small laugh, amused by his stubbornness, and tried to pull my hand back, but he held it tightly. For a second, I thought he looked a little adorable in his fevered state, but then I remembered Mrs Wenger’s words—“It takes two to tango”—and felt irritation bubbling up again.Leaning closer, I whisper, teasing, "I’ll get you some medicine..."Before I could finish, his eyes snapped open, dark and sharp, fully awake. My heart raced, and I instinctively tried to pull away. I held my breath, listening to the quiet in the room. James didn’t respond, and I wasn’t sure if he’d heard me or if he simply didn’t care. Either way, I couldn’t deal with it any longer. Tired and drained, I pulled the blanket up over him and slipped out of the bedroom.I went towards my office upstairs. When we got married, James had gave me this room as a gift to let out my frustration and have fun. He thought fashion design and music were things for fun and not real careers. I was happy to have the room but never actually stepped foot in it before. But tonight, I went inside and found it still fresh and pristine, like someone had been taking care of it. Half an hour later, I’d found a few gift boxes with meaningful trinkets inside my wedding ring, a pair of earrings, a beautiful diamond watch, and a small camera.I opened the camera, and to my shock, it played a birthday greeting from the reclusive music legend I’d idolized my entire life. He was someone who hadn’t appeared in pub

Susan clutched her stomach, her cries getting louder with each breath, and James, still disoriented from his medicine, stumbled over to her and helped her sit on the sofa. As she settled in, she began dramatically pointing out every mark on her body, raising her hands, and arms, and showing the bruises that started to show up on her skin."Look, James," she whined, voice trembling, "look at what she did to me. She hates me. She knows I’m pregnant, and she hates me."I had to admit, she did have bruises—a sign of my anger. But that rage was justified. This woman had the audacity to break into my home, into my bedroom with my husband, and rummage through our closet. She deserved every swat of that broom. But now, as Susan continued to perform her wounded act, James turned to me, his gaze clouded and questioning."Zelda, did you really do this?""Yes," I replied, calm but fierce. "I was just teaching her the manners her mother clearly never did. She barged into my house, into my bedroom,

I woke up the next morning feeling good about myself. Today was the day I was going to sever all ties with James. It had been a long five years, and I had spent nearly all this time trying to get James to notice me, trying to get him to love me. Our love—no, not love. Our marriage was never a love story. It was never arranged. In fact, it wasn’t a marriage of any kind in the traditional sense. It was forced. We were married by constant pressures, by obligation. But today, today we finally got to sever all ties.I get to be free again.Today, we will sign those papers, and we will be officially, legally divorced. I’ll finally be able to go out and find someone who’s truly for me. Someone who would love me freely, without force, without conditions. For the first time, I’ll have the chance to find the kind of love I’d dreamed about for so long.I put on my best dress, despite leaving behind everything shiny and pricey. Zelda"What paternity test?" I asked, my brow furrowed. I took the phone from James, staring at the report on the screen. It wasn't a paternity test at all. It was a kinship test. And the result…grandfather-granddaughter? My confusion deepened."Whose grandchild is this?"I scrolled back, finally taking in the names of the individuals involved in the assessment. My eyes widened in surprise."It's…Bai Luoqi's child?"Luoqi! It all clicked into place. He’d passed away, which explained why James was so invested in this child. Luoqi had been busy with the Bai family’s overseas business these past few years, just like Susan. They’d both been out of the Country. And then, the timing…Susan had returned with James and the Bai's. The media had assumed they were Susan’s parents, making all sorts of incorrect assumptions. No wonder they’d all come back together."So," I said slowly, piecing it together, "the Bai family's IPO is at a critical stage. Luoqi's death is a huge blow, and you’re trying

ZeldaMy mind was a whirlwind. Tissues, where were the tissues? Liamson, Zelda Liamson, that's me, and right now I was trying desperately to stop James's nosebleed. It was all so embarrassing! And then there was James, throwing that cup of water. At Xavier! His brother. I felt a surge of mortification."I told you to stop messing around!" I scolded, my cheeks burning. "This whole ward is a mess!"James, bless his heart, just looked gloomy."It's inconvenient," he mumbled, "Let's just get discharged tomorrow.""Discharged?" I exclaimed, aghast. "How can we? Your injuries aren't nearly healed! And…and I need to see Xavier. James, why did you hit him?"I turned to go out, but James grabbed my wrist, his grip surprisingly tight. It startled me."What's wrong?" I asked, looking at him.He seemed to realize he'd been too rough and loosened his hold a little."I think…I think my wound might have opened again. It hurts," he said, his brow furrowed. My worry instantly eclipsed everything else.

I was stunned. My head snapped back, and a jolt of disbelief running through me.“How could you even think that?!” I exclaimed, my voice rising in disbelief. “There’s nothing between me and my Hammer. I don’t… I don’t like him! How could you even imagine such a thing?”James’s expression was a mixture of anger and something else… hurt? He sneered a harsh, bitter sound.“He coveted you back then. He even dared to come to the Ferguson family to propose! And in the past two years, he abandoned his life as the heir to the Yassir family to work at the Ferguson hospital… just to be near you. You kissed in the car. You hid your pregnancy. You talked about divorce. You were going to go abroad with him! And just now… you were snuggled in his arms! What am I supposed to think, Zelda? What?”His words hit me like a physical blow. He loosened his grip on my chin, but the damage was done. My neck felt strained, stretched to its limit. I stared at him, his eyes burning with a cold fury, and a wave

ZeldaHis hand, James’s hand, was a vice around my waist. His fingers pressed right on the bruise, a throbbing reminder of his unfounded anger. The scene in the ward replayed in my mind, fueling my own simmering frustration. He’d stormed out, furious, without even knowing what had happened. Then, his accusation about Hammer. I glanced at Hammer’s cheek, the fading bruise a testament to James’s… overreaction. Something snapped. I shoved him away, my brow furrowed.“James, have you said enough?!” I retorted, my voice trembling slightly. “I just fell asleep. Brother was worried I’d catch a cold and put his coat on me. Is that so terrible? I asked him for help at the airport. If you want to blame someone, blame me. Why involve him?”A wave of hurt washed over me. If James hadn’t forgotten I was waiting outside, would I have fallen asleep on that bench? And he had hugged Susan in front of me, without a word of explanation, but my innocent interaction with Hammer was enough to ignite his ra

We arrived at Mrs. Bai’s room, but the doctor had already finished and left. She was lying there, so pale and thin, her eyes cloudy and unfocused, but tears were silently streaming down her face. It was heartbreaking.James went to her and gently took her hand.“Godmother,” he said, his voice low and steady. “I’ll take care of everything online. I won’t let anyone tarnish Luoqi’s name. Godfather and I… we’ll stabilize the company. If Bai’s survives this, if the stock price recovers, the internet will quiet down. They’ll let Luoqi rest in peace.”A flicker of something – hope? – touched Mrs. Bai’s face. Mr Bai stepped forward too, stroking his wife’s hair.“Listen to James,” he said softly. “As long as I’m alive, our son won’t have died in vain. Even if you don’t trust me, you have to trust James, right?”I watched them, my heart aching. Mrs. Bai, and Mr Bai… they’re known for their love and devotion to each other. When I pushed open the hospital room door, I saw him. James. Sitting on the bed, looking at some papers. A surge of… something… went through me. Annoyance? Worry? I marched over and snatched the documents from his hand.He looked up, surprised, probably thinking I was one of his bodyguards. His expression shifted from annoyance to… something else. I stood there, frowning, the papers clutched in my hand."The doctor said you need rest. You lost a lot of blood, and sleep helps your body heal. Don't you understand that? The Ferguson company can handle things for a day or two; it’s not like he can’t be transferred!" I know I was probably lecturing, but I couldn’t help it. He was being so reckless. He just looked at me. At me. And for a moment, the coldness that usually clung to his face seemed to melt away. Something flickered in his eyes… nostalgia? It was strange. Then I saw it. The ghost of a smile playing on his lips. And suddenly, I was remembering too.“Brother, you can’t go to bed

I caught Susan’s wrist before her hand could connect with my face."Are you angry because I exposed your lies?" I sneered. Her chest heaved, and she yanked her hand back, a flicker of something – fear? – in her eyes. She took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure."You saw your mother and your aunt and uncle just now, didn't you? They're badly hurt, no money for treatment. And you, their own flesh and blood, just walked right past them. Don't you think that's…inappropriate?""Don't we have you for that?" I retorted, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "Miss Susan is so kind and generous. Surely you can show them some of that generosity."Susan’s face twisted with frustration."Zelda Liamson, why are you so cold-hearted? You're a Ferguson now, carrying their grandchild, and you're just going to let your relatives suffer? Think about your reputation! What will people say?"She was seething. ZeldaI snorted, a small, involuntary sound of amusement. Turning on my heel, I left the coffee shop.Jian had perfect timing, arriving just in time to witness Susan Wenger's spectacular face-plant. Honestly, the schadenfreude was delicious. The moment I stepped out, the whispers, no, the shouts erupted."Susan Wenger, you've been lying to us all along! We even defended you! You're disgusting!""I've seen people pretend to be rich, but pretending to be someone's ex-girlfriend? That's a new low!""Mr Ferguson doesn't even look at you! You're so vain, it's embarrassing to be seen with you! Let's go!"It was a feeding frenzy. One by one, the sycophantic little group that had been fawning over Susan just moments ago deserted her. Her face, which had been so smug, crumpled. It was almost…pitiable. Almost.Even Hilder Ferguson, her supposed "friend," was disgusted."Susan, you lied to me too! ZeldaI opened my eyes, realizing James had been quiet for a while. The recording had finished, but he was lying there motionless, his face eerily calm. I wondered if he'd fallen asleep. I nudged him, a little irritated."James?"He opened his eyes."Was he running a train in your stomach?" he asked, a teasing glint in his eyes.I rolled my eyes. I’d been so emotional, hearing the heartbeat for the first time, and that was his reaction."Don't you have anything else to say?" I huffed. He smirked, leaning closer."You called me 'hubby,' darling," he murmured. "Say it again. I want to hear it."My cheeks flushed. Why was he always so focused on the weirdest things? I glared at him."Did I? You must have misheard."Just moments ago, we’d been snuggled together, listening to the baby’s heartbeat, holding my belly, feeling so happy, so connected, like a real family. And in that moment, the word just slipped out. Now, under his teasing gaze, I was too embarrassed to repeat it.He wasn’t let
