The sound of the phone ringing on the table was what woke Iryna up the next morning.
After a long day that started with waiting for hours and ended with a painful rejection, Iryna Gallagher had walked all the way home and fallen on her bed in tears. She had slept off crying that night and she would have still been sleeping as late as 11am that morning if not for the person that was calling her continuously.Iryna stood up angrily and took the phone to look at who it was. It was the waiter, Fred Walters. Could the damn old man not leave her alone for just a minute! She cut the call and threw her phone on the table before falling face first on the bed.She was still on the blue gown she had worn for the engagement party and she didn’t care if she got it rumpled. She was going to do whatever she liked. What’s the worst that could happen anyways? The phone rang again and Iryna grunted in anger as she stood up to pick the call. It was Fred. She picked the call and started barking into the receiver.“I swear if you call me again I would…”Iryna stared at the phone. The call had been cut already. She frowned and just as she was about to drop the phone a text message flashed across the screen.“Meet me in front of Downtown. It’s urgent. Walters.”Iryna hissed and put the phone on airplane mode. She was sick and tired of Fred Walters calling her like she had stolen something from him. She sat down on her bed reliving the events of the previous day and something flashed in her head - the second bottle of wine that Fred had brought! That was why he was calling her!“Oh Gods!” Iryna cursed and picked up her phone quickly. “The old man would think I don’t want to pay and so I’m avoiding him…not like I asked for the drink in the first place.”She dialed Fred’s line quickly but the call didn’t go through. She called a second and a third time but still the same thing. Iryna frowned. Now she didn’t have a choice. She had to go meet Fred Walters at Downtown. She washed her face quickly and searched her literally empty wardrobe for something to wear. Most of her clothes were dirty. The only blouse that was there was way too small for her so she decided to just keep wearing the gown.Iryna cleaned her shoes quickly and walked out of her apartment and into the main road. It was past noon already and the street of New Orleans was buzzing with people. On a regular day, the walk to Downtown was a short one but the throng of people on the streets that afternoon made the walk rather long. She had to navigate her way through elderlies reading papers on the road, teenagers skating around, and children playing in the corners and when she eventually got to the bar, she was sweating profusely.Iryna looked around quickly. Fred Walters was not there. She ignored the Black Limousine that was parked in front of the building and walked inside the bar.Bitter memories greeted her as soon as she walked in. She could see a couple making out on the very table she had sat on the previous day. What a lucky girl! They looked so happy together. She wished she was the one, but sadly, Michael had rejected her.Iryna walked up to the bar man and waved at him. He didn’t look friendly.“How can I help you?” the bar man asked and started walking towards a table with a glass of gin in his hand.“I’m looking for Fred Walters,” Iryna replied. “You know, the old man that works at the bar.”The bar man dropped the glass of gin and turned to face Iryna . “I don’t know who you’re talking about.”He started off almost immediately and Iryna had to run to keep up with his pace.“Come on, everyone knows Fred,” Iryna said. “The jolly old man. He does the night shift.”“I’m not everyone,” the bar man replied dryly. “Ask everyone.”He turned around, abandoning Iryna in the middle of the bar and just then, she got another text on her phone.“Come outside.”“Seriously?” Iryna frowned. “He’s even watching me.”Iryna walked out of the bar and turned around in search of Fred but he was nowhere to be found. Her phone beeped again and she stared at the screen.“Enter the black car.”Iryna turned to her right. The black limousine was still parked there, but the windows were tinted and she couldn’t see inside. Fred Walters didn’t own a limousine anyways. She turned around looking for any other black car around and as she turned, the door of the limousine clicked open.Iryna shifted back a little and looked inside. Smoke was coming from the open door and blurring her view of the occupants of the car.“Is this some sort of joke Fred?”Iryna heard a light chuckle and as she started to shift away from the car, she felt a heavy hand land on her shoulders. She opened her mouth to scream and another hand landed on her mouth. She was trapped. Her abductor lifted her up and threw her in the car before anyone around could notice and a familiar smell hit her nostrils. Cocaine.Iryna’s heart was pounding in her chest as they drove away.“If it’s about Michael I’m sorry,” Iryna pleaded. “I promise I would never disturb him again. Just let me go free.”“Shut your trap!” One of them commanded. “We don’t know what the boss wants with you but all I can say is you’re in a lot of trouble girl.”Iryna closed her eyes whimpering. She didn’t expect that she would ever see a day worse than the previous day when Michael rejected her but she was wrong..Sitting in the back of the black Limousine flanked by burly and heavily armed men was definitely worse than rejection.Iryna closed her eyes and prayed silently that she lived to see the next day.The car screeched to a halt after about fifteen minutes of driving and Iryna strained her eyes to see where they had stopped. The tinted windows blocked her view however and she closed her eyes once more in the hope that when she opened them again, she would discover that she had been dreaming.Iryna’s eyes opened to the harsh reality that she was not dreaming. It was real. One of the men caught her by the arm and pulled her out of the car and she squinted under the light of the sun. It was afternoon and they didn’t even care that the day was bright and people would be watching. They led her towards the door of a mansion and the man in front pushed the gate open. Iryna looked around quickly and did a quick sign of the cross. If she was actually in trouble with the owner of that mansion, then there was no saving her. They stopped at the entrance of a hallway and pushed it open. The hall came into full view immediately and Iryna marveled at the beauty of the place. The walls wer
Marcus Evans stared at the paper that lay on the table in front of him. He could barely believe his eyes. His business partner and benefactor, Fred Walters was dead and he had passed down his chain of companies to his new wife. Marcus Evans was not new to the business. He knew what it meant. Fred’s lawyer, Jeremy had already sent him a mail informing him of a meeting with the new boss at midnight where all the necessary documents would be signed. He knew that once again, he would have to be smart in his negotiations and make sure he got the new boss to inject funds into his company, Evans Modeling agency. He squeezed the paper and threw it in the dustbin.“Should have waited till after we released the winter collection before he died,” Marcus grunted. “I was really looking forward to the success of that show.”“It can still be successful with the new owner,” Audrey chipped in.Marcus turned to face Audrey and sighed. Audrey was his only daughter, and at twenty five, the only thi
It was when Iryna received the call from Fred’s lawyer, she knew she was not dreaming. She was actually going to inherit all this wealth!Fred’s lawyer, Jeremy had called her earlier that day to inform her of the meeting with all the stakeholders and CEO’s of the thirty companies that she now owned. Apparently, Fred had opened all his companies under different names and given them to different people to run for him after signing a contract with them. They were to help him manage and groom it and at the end of the calendar year, they received a great percent of the company’s profit. It seemed more like a charity organization to Iryna considering the fact that they weren’t even putting in any capital. Fred was the one solely funding all the companies.Iryna skimmed through the documents quickly, taking note of the companies that Fred had been funding and the profit they brought to him yearly. Running through the document, she found out that Evans Modelling Agency had been the high
Marcus Evans had never seen his daughter's jaw drop so hard that it popped, but he bore witness to it that night."Are you alright? What is it?" Marcus whispered to his daughter. The jaw pop was so audible that some of the people around him heard it and were looking at his daughter strangely.Audrey herself was having some difficulties closing her jaw. This was not what she was expecting to see. She tried to lean to Michael, perhaps he could explain what was happening. But Michael ignored her completely. His eyes were fixed on Iryna Gallagher who sat directly in front of him from across the table.Michael swallowed and pulled his shirt away from his neck. He blinked hard hoping that the image in front of him would vanish. But no matter how much he did this, she was still there staring straight at him. He couldn't help but remember what a friend had told him some time back.'Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned.'Her predatory sharp stare sent shivers down his spine. His back became so
Michael swallowed hard. He felt his saliva land hard with a thud in his belly. He wasn't the CEO of Evans Modelling, but he felt he was the one put on the hot seat. He still couldn’t believe how his luck had changed so drastically."Evans Modelling," Iryna repeated and glanced at Marcus this time."Yes, Mrs Walters," Marcus stood up but Jeremy gestured for him to sit down and he returned to his seat."Mr Evans," Iryna paused, then she scoffed. "I studied your whole financial statement for last year, I also know that you have been the largest benefactor of Mr Walters." She removed her gloves and rubbed her hands together as she waited for Marcus to respond."Yes, that is very true Madam," Marcus said. The ventilation system was running at medium in the room but it didn't help Marcus' intense perspiration. He had developed dark patches on his white shirt just around his chest region."Nice job on the profits generated," Iryna said with a smile that was far from being sincere.Neverthele
Michael decided to chase after Iryna but his pride got him worked up and besides, the lady was walking around with gunmen. He looked at the men standing at the wall. He was sure that all of them were wearing expensive handmade suits, and they wouldn't bat an eye to fill anyone with holes if they got too close to Iryna."Damn!" Michael cursed.Marcus had been livid after the meeting. He had refused to say any word and had left without them."Father is such a drag," Audrey hissed by his side. She wrapped her arms around Michael's. "Let's go home, we don't need to stay here anymore."Michael looked down at Audrey and almost frowned. He closed his eyes and resigned himself to her. She hadn’t even realized that the only reason why he rushed out was that he had hoped to catch up with Iryna and not Marcus."Let's go home, we will discuss about it tomorrow," Michael said.Audrey ordered a taxi since they didn’t bring their cars.“Did you know that girl was connected to my father’s benefactor?
Michael turned the steering wheel and the car responded, turning into a street. He glanced up and saw the old apartment complex where Iryna stayed and he smiled. He didn't have any assurance that he would see her there, but it wouldn't hurt to check if she was still there. The neighborhood where she stayed was one of the older sections of New Orleans, where living costs were greatly reduced. It had a higher-than-normal crime rate and Michael shivered as he studied the streets. After all, he was a famous model, the last thing he needed was to get mobbed. He eased his Porsche into a tight parking space on a lot facing the building. At this hour in the morning, it was surprising that it was quite crowded.Everyone should have gone to work, he thought.Michael was about to step out of the car when he remembered that he was a celebrity. He opened a compartment in the dashboard and brought out a cap. It would really suck to be found out in the neighborhood, the thought of being engulfed by
Iryna patted her hair as she walked through the corridors upstairs with her escorts and Jeremy following closely behind. The meeting went just like she had planned but she couldn’t help but feel a tug in her heart. Was she too hard on them? Did she let her emotion get in the way? Was it even enough?Hundreds of questions coursed through her head as they made their way to the study. She wanted to exert her revenge on Michael but at the same time, she wanted to fulfill Fred’s wishes and keep his companies running. Marcus was not such a bad man but he was terrible at managing. The fact that he was favored by Fred made it even more difficult to tame him but she was going to find a way to figure it out."I think you shook them up pretty good Mrs. Walters," Jeremy smiled as they settled in the study. He poured her a glass of water when she had settled down on the large executive chair and Iryna was grateful for the kind gesture.Jeremy was a slim tall man in his late thirties and he looked
