The reason it affected Alia and Jake is simply because they are worried for their pups (and I'm sure Clair and Gavin felt the same too), but it was not anything like a bond or something that is shared between parents (only fated mates can feel emotions between them). The big showdown you are waiting for is approaching. I see some people stating that the story is dragging and taking too long to get to the point.
