Jaxon completed his third hour of solo workouts and could hear sneakers squeaking on the smooth parquet around the gym. Though his muscles hurt, sweat streamed down his cheeks and he was unrelenting. Practice had finished hours ago, but Jaxon stayed behind resolved to improve every element of his game.
The season was flying by, and with every triumph the weight of expectations got more weight.
Jaxon had always been totally committed; basketball had been his life; success was the only choice. But lately, that emphasis had veered. Maintaining his Alpha status, ongoing rivalry with Liam, and unresolved conflict with Maya ate at his attention.
Though he had successes, he continued to feel as though something more was eluding him.
But tonight none of that counted. Tonight there was only him, the ball, and the sound of the net swishing with every ideal stroke. Here he felt under control, where everything made sense. He might drown out the uncertainties and diversions here. He was staring at the prize—a legacy—and nothing else could stop him from reaching that mark.
The Dream of the Championship Before to Westbrook, Jaxon's greatest dream had always been the championship. It was the reason he kept pushing himself and spent many hours improving his game. At the conclusion of the season, he wanted to be the one raising that trophy—the one guiding his team toward triumph.
But today, more than ever, that dream seemed to be a two-edged blade.
There was still competition with Liam. If something, it was getting more intense. Unquestionably, Liam was talented, and his presence improved the team only. But Jaxon sensed Liam nipping at his heels, poised for the chance to occupy his place with each forward stride.
Jaxon couldn't afford to fail—not even momentarily. The squad relied on him, hence Liam would be right there to cover for missed concentration.
Still, it was not just Liam. Jaxon's personal life was beginning to show the continual pressure as well. His relationship with Maya was uneven, and every time he considered approaching her, anxiety over losing her crept in. She had been patient with him, sympathetic to the pressures of his basketball career, but Jaxon knew he had not been fair to her. Now he wasn't sure how to bring her back; he had pushed her away in his search of excellence.
The team rallies Coach Davis summoned a team gathering the following morning. The stakes were higher than ever and they were just weeks from the playoffs. Jaxon sensed the tension as the guys arrived in the locker room.
Everybody understood the line of action.
With crossed arms, Coach stood before them. "You have all worked hard to get here," he continued, his voice calm but firm. "But more is needed than just diligence.
One cannot rely just on talent. You must more than anything want it. You have to want it so much that you would be ready to give up all else for it.
With his heart pumping, Jaxon sat up a little straightener. Coach was referring to something he understood. It went beyond merely showing up for practice or adding points to the board.
It was about all commitment, mind, body, and soul. Jaxon also wasn't sure if he had that kind of concentration right now.
Coach said, "We have a shot at the championship," his eyes darting the hall.
But only if you keep concentrated. Only if you fix your gaze on the reward.
The room was still, Coach's words hanging in the air weighty. Though everyone in that room wanted to win, wanting it was insufficient. They must live and breathe it.
They had to offer everything they owned, free from distractions or justification.
Jaxon got the usual heat in his chest as the team scattered. More than everything, he sought this. He was not going to let anyone else—including Liam—stand in his path.
Deeply though, he understood he had to strike equilibrium. He chased his dream, unable to keep the fire ablaze at both ends pushing everyone away.
Romantic Conflicts with Maya Jaxon at last built up the nerve to phone Maya later that evening. She responded gently and cautiously after a few rings. "Hey, Jaxon,"
"Hey," he said, struggling to swallow. "Can we chat?"
The other end stopped, and Jaxon worried she may say no for a second. She sigh, though, then. Really.
You where are?
Gym, he said. I'll see you outdoors.
Fifteen minutes later they were seated on a bench outside the gym, the cool night air a sharp contrast to their warmth. Everything Jaxon had been avoiding, everything they hadn't said to one another, hovered in the air like a cloud, taunting her.
"I have been thinking a lot lately," Jaxon said, his voice low. "About all. In reference to us.
Maya stared at him, her face incomprehensible. "And?,"
Jaxon let a long sigh. I know I have been aloof. I forget what's actually essential since I had been so preoccupied with basketball and winning. Maya, I refuse to lose you. I'm not sure, though, how to juggle everything.
Maya's eyes softened, yet still she seemed a little depressed. "Jaxon, I understand that basketball rules your life. I never intended to cause interference with that.
I cannot, however, spend eternity on the sidelines waiting for you to come to know I am here.
Her comments cut right, but Jaxon knew she was correct. His chase of the championship had been so all-consuming that he had overlooked the one person who had always been at his side. He stretched out and grabbed her hand.
"I am sorry." I'll excel. I refuse to keep dragging you away.
Maya squeezed his hand and grinned weakly. "You are right, Jaxon. Still, deeds say more than words. I also need to know that you take time for us really seriously.
Jaxon nodded, resolved resolution washing over him. Though he was focused on the prize, that award was more than just a championship. Maya was it; his team was it; it was learning to strike a balance between the two.
Not now, he was not going to let basketball overwhelm him.
Liam's Challenge Jaxon and Liam were clearly tense the next day during practice. Everyone in the team knew the playoffs were just around. They had been working hard.
Though most of the team appeared to be concentrated, Jaxon could sense Liam's eyes fixed on him, the unspoken competition boiling under surface level.
Liam called for the ball during a scrimmage, and Jaxon, situated near the top of the key, spotted his opportunity. He passed across the lane, then headed for the hoop. But Liam lagged not too far behind. The two crashed mid-air, and for a split second the whole gym seemed to be breathing.
Jaxon dropped hard, his elbow rubbing the floor, but he got up to his feet fast. Liam was right there, challenging his eyes ablaze."You think you're the only one staring at the prize, Hayes?" Liam murmured and moved up close.
Jaxon closed his eyes as the heat inside him flared once more. "I know Liam, what it takes to win. Are you?
Though Liam grinned, his eyes seemed to be full of menace. "Guess we'll see, won't we?"
The last part of practice was a haze of fierce rivalry and hard-earned maneuvers. But Jaxon knew something crucial as he walked out of the gym that evening: Liam was not leaving. This was about who had the desire to battle for what they wanted, regardless of cost, not only about who was the better athlete.
Jaxon also knew he would not be backtracking. Not today. Never at all.
After yet another demanding drill, the gym's air had finally calmed down, but Jaxon's mind was far from quiet. One thing was the game he was playing on the court; yet, he couldn't relax the strain off the court. Their competition had something personal in it, something more than just athletics; the fire between him and Liam was about something else.Jaxon saw Maya waiting close by the doors as he was leaving the locker area. She was reading through her phone when she noticed him; her heart skipped a beat. She grinned.Though they had decided to sort things out, there was still an unsaid barrier between them. He had not seen much of her since their previous chat. The Unspoken Words Jaxon called "Maya," walking up, his voice still weighed with tiredness. She raised a sweet but wary smile.Hi Jaxon. Tucking a piece of hair under her ear, she asked, "How's it going?" Jaxon could see she was wary, not sure where they stood following the ups and downs of the past few weeks.Jaxon groaned
Jaxon was walking off the court when he still could hear the din of the crowd. Another triumph under his belt, but instead of the customary sensation of success, he carried weight. The success he had been pursuing for so long was beginning to show negative effects.Being the Alpha of the team meant more than just guiding them to success; it also meant daily proving oneself. And every game the tension was getting more difficult to overlook.Jaxon experienced the soreness deep in his muscles while seated in the locker room following the game. He was physically wearing the season. Every leap, every run, every contact with another player seemed to stay longer in his body than it had before.Though he had always pushed himself to the edge, now his body seemed to be starting to rebel. Stretching his legs, he winced at the hamstrings' tightness. The trainer had cautioned him he was overworking himself and he should relax. But just how could he stop? The team looked on him to guide them tow
The Basketball Alpha King Jaxon sat in the gym lost in contemplation early the morning after the team's most recent victory. Long shadows across the court emerged as the light passed through the high windows. Even after the win, he felt uncomfortable. The demands of success were growing, and Jaxon's own team's strife—as well as his own—was harder to overlook. The Cooker under Pressure With the playoffs swiftly here, everyone felt the weight of what was at risk. But Jaxon felt the strain was heightened. He had put in a lot of effort to establish himself as the team's Alpha, the man everyone turned to in crucial seconds. That title now seemed more like a weight than a badge of pride. Liam's coming had just made things worse. Every drill, every game Liam was always there, trying Jaxon, waiting for him to break.Jaxon wasn't sure how much more he could put up the front of calm and control; it was a full-fledged power war now. Jaxon saw the team chemistry changing subtly throughout exercis
The sound of the basketball thudding the floor filled the arena. Jaxon Hayes was wiping perspiration from his forehead from central court. His heart hammered from the weight of expectation as much as from the workouts. Juxon, the team's current "Alpha," knew every eye in the room was focused on him. This was about keeping his domination, not just about basketball.Flashback: Modest Starting Point Juxon's ascent had not been simple. Coming from a difficult area, the basketball floor had been his haven. Every spare minute was used to improve his speed, jump shot, ability to understand the game, etc. For him, it was survival not simply a game. On and off the court he had to be the greatest, the strongest, the "Alpha".The Rival Tonight's practice was about confronting Liam Carter, not just about getting ready for the first game of the season. the brash rookie having a reputation for regularly showing the veterans. Liam was hungry, not just competent. His movement on the floor, the way he
As Jaxon strolled across university the next day, the weight of the one-on-one confrontation with Liam still remained in his head. His attention was divided, and for the first time in weeks, basketball was not the only thing occupying his mind. Maya had been remote, and even if they had avoided a full-fledged conflict, the unresolved tension between them was become more difficult to overlook.Maya was more than simply someone he loved; she was a part of his life in a manner none other had ever been. Now, with everything on the line, Jaxon understood he had been ignoring her, shoving her aside in his unrelenting quest of excellence. He had assumed she would be there, waiting for him constantly.Jaxon realized he couldn't keep ignoring the issue now, however, with the competition with Liam, the pressure of the playoffs, and the holes in their relationship. A Chance Gathering Jaxon saw Maya chatting with several of her friends close to the university café after practice. She looked bri
As Jaxon got ready for the one-on-one fight with Liam, the weight of his personal conflicts descended upon him. It was not just a struggle for leadership; it seemed as if everything rested on this one moment. Future of his squad, his connection with Maya, and even his own Alpha identity were on line. But something unexpected occurred just as Jaxon believed he was alone.A Surpression See visit. After practice, Jaxon was sitting by himself in the gym, his muscles hurting after another demanding day. He was immersed in his thoughts, planning how he would approach the game with Liam, when he heard footfall bouncing across the court.Looking up, Jaxon was startled to see his elder brother Derek approaching him with a knowing grin. Jaxon had not anticipated seeing Derek once again so quickly. Having left basketball years ago after a career-ending injury, his sibling had his own life to live.Growing up, Derek had always been Jaxon's idol; yet, they had grown apart ever after the accident
Jaxon showed up for practice the following day still hearing Derek's remarks. His talks with his brother had changed something inside of him, but he wasn't sure exactly where to start. Weeks of training had gone toward facing Liam one-on-one, but now Coach Davis was adding a fresh twist that had Jaxon wondering what was ahead.Coach stood in front of the group as they assembled, his face austere.Coach said, "Change of plans." "I have chosen to test you both differently instead of the one-on-one game. This test is about showing you can highlight the best in your colleagues, collaboration, and leadership.Jaxon gave Liam a quick look, who was similarly perplexed."I'm dividing the team in two squads," Coach said. "Jaxon, one will be yours to captain. You will captain the other, Liam. You will have to choose your partners very wisely. Every side will play a full-court match; the winner will guide us into the playoffs.Jaxon felt his heart accelerate. This was about who could motivate,
Once again, Jaxon's phone buzzed; Maya's message shining on the screen: We have to speak. It is crucial. Heart pounding, he fixed his gaze on the book. After everything that had transpired in the gym—the shocking choice Coach made to name Liam co-captain—Jaxon doubted he could manage further ambiguity. But Maya was his heart; the one constant presence even when he hadn't merited it. And now he felt a great weight from something deeper. He gave her a rapid reply: Where would you want to meet?Right at the café. I should be there in ten minutes.Thoughts whirling in his brain, Jaxon grabbed his backpack and left the gym.A tense reunion A few minutes early, Jaxon arrived to the café; his tummy was wriggling with anxiety. Maya was seated at a corner table with hands around a warm cup of coffee. Her face inscrutable, she glanced up as he came nearer.Jaxon replied, sliding onto the seat across from her."Hey," Maya said, her voice kind yet firm. They sat in quiet for a minute, their uns
