CHAPTER SIX
FIRST CONVERSATION. ELENA'S POV I grasped the door handle and turned it slowly, then pushed the door open and stepped outside. I paused for a moment, checking to ensure no one was watching. Satisfied, I shut the door behind me and hurried into the woods. “Finally,” I sighed as the cool, fresh air hit my face, a welcome relief from the stuffy gathering inside. My eyes soon caught sight of something unexpected—a small, secluded body of water nestled within the pack’s territory. Intrigued, I made my way toward it, marveling at the unexpected sight. It was a small, pristine pool, tucked away as if someone had carefully maintained it just for moments like this. I brushed some sand off the concrete edge and sat down, taking in the peaceful surroundings. The faint hum of the party inside was still audible, making me even more grateful for my escape. Suddenly, a disturbance in the water caught my attention. Before I could react, a head emerged from the pool, causing me to flinch and stumble backward onto the ground. “Be careful!” a familiar voice called out. I froze, recognizing the voice instantly. I looked toward the water, and my gaze softened. “It’s just you,” I said, pushing myself up and brushing sand off my clothes. Liam chuckled, his expression turning serious as he locked eyes with me. “Are you okay?” “Yes and no, but I’ll manage,” I replied, forcing a smile. “I should get back inside,” I added, still wanting to avoid the noisy gathering. “Are you sure?” Liam’s brows arched playfully. “Of course,” I said, though my tone betrayed my nervousness. “You’re not, Elena,” he said, swimming to the edge. He pulled himself out of the water, droplets cascading down his body. I couldn’t help but notice the way the water clung to his toned physique. “Ouch, my hands are sore,” Liam winced, pulling me from my daze. “I wasn’t staring!” I protested, though I knew I was lying. “Really? All my effort to get your attention, and it’s a waste?” he teased. “Totally,” I said, trying to sound casual. “Ouch!... You’re hurting my feelings,” he said with a dramatic sigh, making me chuckle. He flashed me a grin before sitting beside me on the concrete. “Can you stay for a while and keep me company?” he asked, squinting hopefully. “Considering how much I want to avoid the noise inside… yes,” I said, nodding. “It’s like you read my mind,” he said, rolling his eyes playfully as he patted the space next to him. I took a seat beside him, and we sat in silence for a few minutes. I wanted to ask him so many things, but I held back. The quiet wasn’t just awkward; it was thick with unspoken thoughts. “So… are you rejecting me?” Liam broke the silence, his voice serious. My breath caught in my chest. I opened my mouth, but no words came out. What could I say? “I’m not a full member of this pack yet, so I can’t reject you as my Alpha,” I said, scratching my neck awkwardly. “I’m not talking about that,” he said, his gaze steady. “I don’t actually understand… You weren’t very clear, and I’m not the sharpest,” I rambled, hoping he’d drop the topic. “Are you rejecting me as your mate?” he asked plainly. My palms grew clammy. “I… I don’t know,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I don’t know, as in maybe? So you might reject me?” he pressed, his expression earnest. I sighed deeply and nodded, feeling a wave of conflicting emotions. Liam looked away, staring at the water as silence enveloped us again. “But why?” he asked, his voice filled with a mix of hurt and confusion. “Because… I don’t want to get hurt again,” I said, the words spilling out before I could stop them. I watched Liam’s shocked expression and bit my lip, realizing I had just revealed a personal pain. “You were once mated?” he asked, his voice steady but his eyes wide. "Yes, to an Alpha also" I responded, trying hard not to think about Logan. "You rejected him?" He asked and I nearly scoffed. If I'd none of his plans, I sure would have but he beat me to it, thinking about it now seem to make my skin crawl. "Nope. He rejected me. After cheating on me with my cousin, he fucking rejected me in front of the entire pack" I groaned, running my hands into my hair frustrated. "I'm sorry about that. But I'm glad he did" Liam muttered and I gave him this scorn look, like was he serious right now?. "Puff... don't get me wrong, I meant I'm glad you didn't end up mated to him cause there's no way, I would have met you then" I felt my cheek heat up at his utterance but I quickly subdued it, Logan made me feel this same way and he turned out to be a snitch!. "Yea, I'm also glad I'm free... free from Alpha Logan Lee Parker" I heaved a sigh of relief. " What did you just call him?" Liam wriggled his brows. "Alpha Logan Lee Parker" I repeated. Liam swallowed hard. "Don't... tell me you are from the Silver pack" He stuttered. I stared at him, scrutinizing his behavior. 'Why did he suddenly become tensed when I mentioned Logan, does he know him?' I wanted to ask him but I shrugged it off. "Yes..." I drawled. Liam's eyes widened, a took on another gulped and slowly averted my gaze, his hand trembling. What was wrong with him?. "Do you know him?" I finally let my curiosity get the better of me. "I...I..." Liam stuttered stopping halfway and then he took another gulp.CHAPTER SEVEN LETTING IT ALL OUT. ELENA'S POV Liam's eyes widened, as he took on another gulp and slowly averted my gaze, his hand trembling. What was wrong with him?. "Do you know him?" I finally let my curiosity get the better of me. "I...I..." Liam stuttered stopping halfway and then he took another gulp. He let out an awkward chuckle. “You think I should…I mean they are close to our pack and…” He drawled. I squinted my eyes trying to make sense of his words and actions. Weirdo. “Kieran just mindlinked, I need to get back to the gathering and dismiss everyone but before I leave Elena…” His face suddenly turned serious, and then he slowly took my hand in his. "I understand that your previous mate was a total jerk, Elena. I can't guarantee I'll be better or that you'll accept me, but I promise you, Elena, I'll try my best to be the perfect choice for you. I won’t let you down." He spoke with such earnestness that it made my heart flutter. “I told you he’s better” I
CHAPTER 8ELENA'S POVLEAVING THE PAST BEHINDMy eyes widened in surprise as I watched Beatrice holding a necklace. It was the most beautiful piece of Jewelry I had ever seen. She came closer to me smiling. "Here I want you to have this.""This is beautiful. Thank you," I replied as I smiled back at her. I stretched my hands and she gave me the necklace which I wore around my neck and she helped me to fasten it."It was a gift from someone special and now that you're here, you can have it," Beatrice said. I touched the necklace, feeling happy that she had found me worthy of such a wonderful gift. Tears slipped down my face. No one had ever found it worthy to give me something special. Not even my parents. My mind flashed back to when I celebrated my sixteenth birthday. Unlike others who get to receive gifts from their loved ones, mine was different. No love, no care and worst still, no gift to make me feel special. My father felt it was no use caring for a wolfless child. To him, I
CHAPTER NINE ELENA'S POV I felt my cheeks burn with a deep blush at Liam's flirty words, but I quickly masked it with a frown, determined not to let him see how his comment had affected me. Beatrice, perceptive as ever, cleared her throat. “I need to grab something from my room,” Beatrice announced, her gaze shifting between Liam and me. Without waiting for a response, she excused herself and walked briskly away. As soon as Beatrice was out of sight, a wave of anxiety washed over me. Liam’s stare was relentless, his eyes never leaving my face. I could feel his gaze like a tangible weight, pressing on my every nerve. I picked up my fork with trembling hands, trying to focus on the food in front of me. I shoveled the food into my mouth, chewing quickly to distract myself from the tension that seemed to cling to the air. But the effort to maintain some semblance of normalcy backfired. A piece of food lodged in my throat, and I suddenly found myself choking. The coughing came out lou
Chapter TEN The Bet LIAM'S POV As soon as I got home, I headed straight to my room, slamming the door behind me, I let out a roar of frustration, the sound bouncing off the walls. My hands gripped the edge of the dresser, knuckles white with tension. The anger boiled inside me, relentless. I began to toss things around—the chair hit the wall with a loud thud, the lamp followed soon after, crashing to the floor in a mess of shattered glass. My chest heaved with every breath I took, but as the room grew silent, the rage started to fizzle out. I ran my hand through my hair, pacing for a moment before stopping by the window. Never has it been heard that a woman would avoid me as if I were diseased. But that’s how Elena treats me. Every time I try to get close, she pushes me away. All I want is for her to be mine. My mate. But it seems she’s built an impenetrable wall around herself—one I can’t seem to break through no matter how hard I try. If only she could put her past behind her
CHAPTER ELEVEN A Quiet Gesture ELENA'S POV FEW DAYS LATER I hated how I noticed the little things about him. Like how, whenever I walked into the packhouse kitchen, there was always a steaming cup of coffee waiting for me. Black, just how I liked it. And I certainly hadn’t told anyone about my weird habit of drinking it at odd times of the day. But somehow, Liam had figured it out. I walked over to the counter, eyeing the cup suspiciously, my fingers curling around the warmth of the mug. It felt... nice. That was the worst part—because it made me feel like he was paying attention to things no one else had bothered with before. I wanted to believe it was just coincidence. But it kept happening. “Are you ever going to say thank you, or are you planning to keep staring at it like I’ve poisoned it?” His voice came from behind me, casual yet filled with that faint teasing tone that seemed to get under my skin every time. I turned, seeing him leaning casually against the doorfram

CHAPTER TEN STANDING MY GROUND The coffee was gone, but the warmth it left lingered. I heard the clasping if the door getting shut and didn't need to be told Liam left already.I stared at the coffee, it was really good. A small smile curled on my lips as I gulped down the remaining coffee.Suddenly there was a knock on the door, I placed the coffee cup down and slowly headed for the door, my head trying to figure out who it might beI flung the door open and there stood a lady, maybe a few years younger than me, was standing by the front steps, her expression a mixture of fury and disdain. Her hair, a wild cascade of dark curls, framed her face like a halo of irritation. She stormed over as soon as she saw me. “You!” she spat out, pointing a finger directly at me. “I don’t know what kind of games you’re playing, but you need to stay away from Liam.” I blinked, caught off guard by her venomous tone. “Excuse me?” “You heard me.” Her eyes were sharp, full of anger. “Liam is my ma
CHAPTER ELEVEN A PLEAELENA'S POV My fingers shook as I gently grasped Liam’s wrist, guiding him inside the house. The weight of what had just happened lingered in the air like a shadow that refused to leave. I let go of his arm as soon as we crossed the threshold and sat down on the couch, still trying to wrap my mind around the scene outside. Liam stood near the door, his posture rigid, as if something was clawing at him from the inside. He seemed like he wanted to say something but wasn’t sure how to begin. An uneasy silence settled between us, each second stretching out longer than the last. The ticking of the clock on the wall only served to make the silence more unbearable. I shifted uncomfortably, waiting for him to speak, to break the heavy stillness. Finally, he took a deep breath, his voice coming out quieter than I expected. “There’s something I need to tell you.”I blinked, caught off guard by his serious tone. *A secret?* My heart skipped a beat, and I immediately felt
