Ava's POV
Eli's comments lingered weighty in the air, like a storm just about to strike. I looked at him, trying to find any trace of the man I thought I knew, but all I found was a stranger hiding secrets.
"You believe you're shielding me?" I laughed, attempting to cover the anguish that had jammed itself into my chest. "Keeping me in the dark will help? In lying?
Eli's expression softened but he did not dispute it. "Sometimes, Ava, the truth can do more damage than silence." His voice was little above a whisper, as though he were confining his faults to himself more than to me.
My pulse sharpening, I moved forward a step. Then prove it. Share all with me, Eli. Alternatively, us—" My throat stiff, I paused and said, "ends here."
I momentarily imagined he might turn away. He startled me, though, bringing out a little, battered notepad from within his jacket. He held it between us, his eyes full of unsaid warnings. "What's in here? Ava, this is scary. I had to keep you out of things for this reason as well.
As I reached for the notepad, feeling its weight and heaviness sink into my palm, my hand quitched. Opening it, my eyes skimming the sloppy scribble on every page—names, dates, locations. They were fragments, bits of a jigsaw puzzle that could not fit together.
"What is this?," said I asked, not sure I could speak.
Eli said, his black eyes reflecting a record. "Of every agreement, every betrayal, every name I vowed to guard and destroy if necessary. People I have had to collaborate with. Things I omitted to mention, not without endangering you.
I gazed at the pages, my head whirling as links began to develop. People I considered to be allies—names absent from the list. And then my own name appeared at the bottom of one sheet in the same handwriting but in stronger strokes.
Looking up at Eli, treachery coursed through me. "You monitored me?"
"Not." His face white, he shook his head. " Not like that. I aimed to keep you out of all this. But I knew they would be here after...after what occurred that evening in Boston. To remember myself—that is, for your own safety—I had to enter you here.
"To remember yourself?" I paused, my voice quivering with wrath. "Remember me as just another pawn in whatever game you're playing."
His eyes frantic, he reached for me. Ava, it is not like that. You are aware that it is not. But this planet—his voice tight—doesn't give a damn about love or loyalty—he looked at the notepad. Its focus is on leverage.
"Leverage," I said repeatedly with bitterness. It Tasted like poison, the word seemed. Though I knew better, I wanted to toss the half-torn notepad away. This journal served as evidence of our combined distance from each other.
"Why right now?" I insisted, and closed the notepad with force. Why tell me all this now?
Eli's jaw tightened and his eye grew sharp. "Because their relocation has been noted. And they are visiting for you, Ava.
The space became quiet. My chest felt weighty, my brain wriggling to grasp. "Who is coming?"
His voice tense, he said, "Elias Caldwell's people." "He is knowledge-based. I attempted to maintain one step ahead and steer him off our path, but I undervalued him.
"Caldwell," I murmured, as anxiety turned in my gut. The name was one I had heard just in whispers, a man with too many contacts and too much influence.
"He discovered you are with me," Eli said. And he will not stop till he has you.
I made myself breathe, think clearly. So, what then do we do?
Eli stepped forward, his hand hanging close to mine as though he were reluctant to touch me. "We run." Tonight This time, though, it is different. We leave this time not returning.
A knot closed in my throat. Then simply vanish? Give everything behind you?
His eyes darkened as he nodded. "That's the only approach to keep you safe."
I wanted to yell, tell him that I had created a life here one I wasn't ready to give up. It wasn't fair. Deep down, however, I knew he was correct. Given Caldwell's influence, staying meant jeopardizing everything.
"Fine," I responded, trying hard to swallow. But I'm not running without understanding what's actually going on. I gave him the notepad and fixed him squarely. " Tell me what you know about Caldwell and why he's after me."
Eli hesitated, then let out a slow breath, obscuring his sight. "We go back, Caldwell and I." Years: Though brutal, he was a mentor. enthusiastic. And he made it plain he wouldn't let me go without a price when I sought to distance myself from him.
I watched him and absorbed every syllable.
"He believes I betrayed him," Eli said, his voice tight. That I took something from him.
"What did you steal?" I Inquired.
Eli's teeth closed tightly. Neither what. Who? His voice changed to become kind. "Ava, you. Not mine, yet his universe was created to include you. I couldn't allow him to have you though.
The words knock me like a fist. "What...what do you mean,'meant to be?' You sound as if I were some sort of prize.
"Not a prize," he replied, his hand stretching out with fingers lightly brushing mine. A witness. someone who knows too much Though you might not remember, that evening you were with Caldwell in Boston. You witnessed his behavior. His range of capability. And that qualifies you as a threat.
Memories from that night flashed in my head, sights I had tried to forget, shadows I had pushed away, a cold slink across me. Eli knew exactly what she meant. Things I hadn't wanted to accept, even to myself, I had witnessed.
So all of this, I said softly, "was to keep me hidden from him?"
Eli nodded, his eyes fixed mercilessly. "I attempted to wipe you off his world, to protect you. I was not expecting you would be lured back in, though.
My will was becoming harder to feel. Although Caldwell was merciless, so was I. I had not intended to run indefinitely. Should it be necessary, I would confront him. Then let's stop running, I urged, staring Eli squarely with a furious determination. "Let's call this to an end."
Eli stared wider. Ava, not sure. You are ignorant of his potential.
Strong voice: "I don't care," I said. "I've finished hiding. Should he be after me, I will first target him. I am not doing it, though, alone. Are you with me?
Eli remained quiet for a time, then nodded with a little flash of appreciation in his eyes. constantly.
Though it was the only path, we developed a bold, risky strategy. We went over the darkness as night fell, my heart thumping with a mix of terror and will. Though we were aware of the hazards, this was our opportunity to put things right—to reject the falsehoods, the threats, the ongoing anxiety.
Eli grabbed my hand, his grasp strong as we got near Caldwell's mansion. "Stay close, Ava; whatever comes of course."
I nodded while my heart hammered. This was it—that which would determine everything. Ready to meet whatever was on the other side, we negotiated the darkness together.
Ava's POV Between Eli and me, the stillness is dense and heated. I stayed still, my fingers tightly holding the notepad he had handed me so I could feel its edges cutting into my palm. There were all those secrets, all those times he had avoided my inquiries or shrugged off my worries, ready to be unearthed in this little journal.I opened it, steeling myself with a long breath. Quick, nearly frantic handwriting covered the pages, as if someone had hurried to organize their ideas before they might go. Not only were names and dates involved here, though. There were specifics, rich descriptions of people I knew, others I didn't, all twisted in a web of relationships I hardly comprehended."Eli: what is all this??" My voice was hardly consistent, I asked. I was sorting names that sounded familiar from others that made me shiver down my back. He sat silent while I turned the pages, his eyes fixed on me, inscrutable. His voice low, he replied at last, "It's everything." "Everybody involve
Ava's POV Tension permeated the night air, and I could feel it as weight on my chest. Having Eli next to me caused both comfort and anxiety. Since I had opened the journal and perused the names, the faces, the secrets... The sensation that everything was about to fall apart had not been able to be overcome.Eli looked at me, his eyes sharp and seeking. "Ava, right now we have to move gently. Every stride counts.I nodded while a million questions flew through my head. And if we fail as well? My voice came out softer than I had planned."We then lose everything." And I am not just referring to each other. His comments had a weight that caused shivers. It was everyone entangled in this mess, all the individuals Eli had recorded in his notebook, not only the two of us at risk.I turned down once again and held it to my chest. "There are folks here I thought I could trust," I whispered. Eli, how long have you known? About them all?His darkening eyes followed his hand through his hair. L
AVa's POV As we raced down the lonely road, the stillness in the automobile seemed more weight than it had ever done. The gloom outside appeared to push against the windows, and I could not help but believe it was crushing on us, too—wrapping up every hidden secret, every bit of truth Eli had omitted.Eli kept his eyes on the road, his jaw closed to indicate he was grappling with what he had not uttered. Years had passed between us, and throughout all that time I had never felt so far from him. Alternatively he might have just improved at concealing."Who else knows?" My voice startled the quiet and sounded more strong than I had meant. But following what I had discovered and all the falsehoods... I had to know.He looked at me momentarily then back toward the road. "It was just me and a handful of people. Ava, you were kept out of it to guard you."To guard me?" I gave out a sour laugh. "Keeping secrets just leaves me in the dark; it does not protect me, Eli."He moaned, tightening
Ava's POV As I entered Eli's flat, which seemed to be a lonely, empty shell where memories persisted but warmth had long ago vanished. Knowing full well that anything I discovered may change everything, I came here seeking questions.Unspoken words were in the air as Eli slammed the door behind me. His eyes looked to be inscrutable, a stronghold of secrets apparently indestructible. I was not, however, backing down this time.Starting with "Ava," his voice a deep rumble, "I know what you're thinking.""Do you?” I drew back, crossing my arms. "Because I'm not even sure I know what I'm thinking now. I doubt even what is genuine since you have kept me in the dark for so long.He moved nearer, his face softening. "I never intended things to be this way. I reasoned I could hide it from you. I reasoned that would keep you secure.Shaking my head, I battled the need to yell. Eli, safe from what? You still won't give me the truth; I already live in the center of whatever this is.He simply s
Ava's POV Watching Eli pace the room, his expression locked between regret and something darker—probably fear—and I could not breathe. Since he began talking, he hadn't yet looked me in the eye; however, this time I was letting him evade me."So, you are telling me this has been going on for... exactly how long?" My voice hardly steady as I asked. "You concealed all this from me for years, and felt it was alright since it was for my protection?”"It was never that simple," he said at last, looking directly at me. His eyes reflected a mix of vulnerability I had never seen before and embarrassment. "I felt I could keep you out of it all and manage it. But things were increasingly difficult.I laughed, then clenched my hands. " Complicated? Eli, I have been in danger without even seeing it! Do you know how powerless that renders me?Thick with suspense, the room went still for a minute. Eli's face softened and his shoulders slumped as though he carried a weight too great for one person.
Eli’s POV My secrets' weight was finally falling on me. Ava's expression betrayed both fury and loyalty, and I could see why. Believing it was safer that way, I had kept her in the dark for so long. But here she was, putting together the elements of my life I had always sought to divide."I did everything for Ava, all for you. Every danger, every lie—I was attempting to guard you, my voice unvarnished. She gave out a sour laugh. "Guard me?" By driving me into peril without even realizing it?I had replayed this scenario in my brain a thousand times, but now it was far more terrible. "I had no idea how far it would sink. When I initially became engaged with Marconi, it was straightforward. He needed someone on the inside, and I considered it as just temporary—until I had sufficient information to turn him in. But it veered out of control.Ava's eyes closed as her rage flared. Eli, you could have told me. I had a right to know."Possibly. But, as you would know, they would have sensed
Ava's POV The weight of our plan pulled down on me as I slid into the lovely evening gown. Designed to fit Marconi's unique humanitarian occasion, it was a borrowed facade. The garment gleamed in Eli's apartment's dim light, but it seemed more like a chain binding me to this dangerous work."Are you persuaded regarding this??" Eli's voice came out from behind me, mixed with resolve and worry. Looking in the mirror at me, he adjusted the cufflinks on his tailored suit. Though I could see the tension etched in every feature of the man standing there, he seemed almost the guest."I'm sure," I said, trying to project confidence I lacked totally. We have gone too far to undo right now.He nodded and his jaw clenched. "Marconi won't slow down if he suspects anything.""I know," I said softly. Still, there's an unexpected element. He knows nothing about my arrival. This qualifies you both as an asset and a target. He came forward, his fingers lightly brushing across mine. You will do as I l
Ava's POV From the mansion, the streets melted together. My heartbeat had hardly slowed since we departed; every flicker of headlights behind us made my heart leap. Eli's jacket pocket kept the data firmly in place, but the weight of what we had done hovered about like a dense fog."Are you nice??" Eli's hands grabbing the steering wheel shattered the silence.I nodded, though the fact was far more complicated. "I'm ok." Mostly trying to catch my breath. His eyes went to the rearview mirror in search of any sign of pursuit. "We made it out," he said, as though trying to convince himself. Marconi, though, will not let this slide.I grasp. I found the weight of what we opposed returning to me. "Do you believe he realized?"Not at the moment, Eli answered, his mouth firm. "But he will shortly." The second will come for us; he discovers nothing amiss or even traces of betrayal.I drew hard, the understanding sinking in. We have to remain ahead of him then. Where from here should I be goi
