Ava's pov

I walked back the path I had come from just like Heather and Thomas had instructed. I found the two waiting for me not far from the clearing. Thomas was pacing and Heather was biting her finger nail, face etched with concern.

She was the first to notice me. “How did it go?” Heather asked softly as I approached.

I shook my head, unable to find the words. A lot of things had been discovered tonight and I didn't know where to start from. “Let’s just go back.”

They exchanged a glance but didn’t press me further. The walk back to the place the cart had dropped us off was a quiet one. The forest was eerily quiet now as if it could sense the tension in me.

When we finally reached the rocky path and another cart was waiting for us. We reached the cart and I climbed in without a word, pulling my cloak tightly around me. Heather and Thomas sat on either side of me, their presence brought me a sense of comfort. I wasn't alone at least.

I had a lot of thinking to do.

Ava’s POVI searched my brain for a response. “I… I couldn't sleep. My mind kept reeling with everything you told me the other day about Vanessa and the council.” I said, casually. “I went for a walk to clear my head.”“At night?” he asked, looking skeptical. “After everything I told you, you still went on a walk that late knowing that it's dangerous? That’s… not like you.”“You don't know me well enough.” I blurted. He flinched, making me feel bad. I didn't mean to cause him harm but I needed him to drop the matter.I looked away and focused on my bedside table instead. “I just needed some air.”He sighed then took a step closer to me making me look at him once more. He towered over my small figure and his scent washed over me. “Ava,” he said softly, grabbing my hands. “I know that as a human this is all frightening but I want you to know that I'm by your side and always will be. If something is wrong you need to tell me, come find me no matter the time of the day.I stared at him“

Xander's povSomething felt off, I don't know why but the feeling was there. I was walking to Ava's room because I had forgotten to invite her to have dinner with me earlier.I stood outside her door and hesitated for a moment before knocking. I still couldn't shake off the fact that she was hiding something from me. I understood that our relationship was still rocky— very rocky, so I didn't expect her to open up to me so easily. With a sigh, I raised up my hand and knocked.Silence.I knocked again. No response. “Ava?” I called out and was still met with silence.Frowning, I pushed the door open. It was unlocked, surprisingly. The room was empty and her bed was made.Where could she be?Her scent was still faint in the room as I followed it.Where could she be at this hour? Having dinner with the other servants?I followed her scent as I walked through the empty corridors. It led me through different hallways. I had expected it to take me to either the servant's quarters, kitchen or

Xander's povI reached her door and placed my hand on the door handle but I hesitated. If I go in, what would I say to her?I stood there for a moment contemplating my decision. Leo growled in frustration and urged me to go in but I ignored him as I pulled my hand back. Barging in will not give me what I want, rather, it'll make things worse.Whatever she was doing, whatever she was hiding, I would find out.But not tonight. With a sigh, I turned on my heels and walked away, ignoring the lingering questions at the back of my mind. Avs was keeping secrets, and it was only a matter of time before they came to light. When they did, I wasn’t sure if I’d be ready for the answers.I caught sight of madame Mary as I walked to the dining room. I didn't want to talk to anyone let alone dine with them.“Mary,” I called out, making her turn to me. “Have dinner brought to my room.”“Alright, your majesty.” She gave me a curtsey then walked to the kitchen to do as I had instructed. The walk back t

Xander's pov"Rogues?" I asked, frowning.“Yes. A group of them arrived at the border and they've requested to speak with you.” He continued.Group? Rogues were known to travel alone as wild animals.“How many?” I asked.“About eight.”Eight? Even if rouges move together they do so in small numbers. Something was going on.“How did they manage to get so close to our border without being detected?” That was impossible.Magnus shook his head. “We don't know. It was as if they just appeared. They somehow bypassed the patrols, not just ours but that of the other neighboring packs as well. It was like… I don't know, it's just too coordinated for rogues to pull off.”My body tensed at his words. He was right, this wasn't normal. Rogues were disorganized, scattered and usually too weak to be a serious threat let alone demand an audience with me. But this... this was different.“I'll be there shortly.” I said, Turing to go grab my boots. The air was thick with tension as Magnus and I walked t

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN MATE    Chapter 51

Xander's povThe tension in the air was thick and suffocating as I walked back to the castle with the package in my hand. The scent of the tracker will forever haunt me, I was the one who approved the mission and now his family has lost him.I thought of a way to deliver the news to his family.I placed the package on my desk in my office, staring at it as if it held all the answers I needed. I looked up at the warriors who had followed me in, they were silent and their expressions were grim. The rebellion was no longer a distant threat and was not as small as we thought. How rogues and humans formed an alliance was beyond me, I couldn't comprehend it nor could I have thought that a day like this would come. They were here, right on my doorstep and they had made their first move.Leo growled in the back of my mind, his anger mirroring my own. “We need to act fast.” he snarled.“We will,” I said aloud, my voice cold and steady. “But first, we need answers.”I noticed that Magnus and L

Xander's povIt was later in the day, I had spent the whole day cooped up inside my office sorting through the list I had asked Magnus to provide for me. Nothing seemed amis and this stressed me more. There was something I wasn't seeing. Someone who was well hidden, I didn't know who to trust at this point.I wanted to ask Lyra or Magnus if they had seen the person that the rogue had looked at. If my mate was a suspect then so was everyone else regardless whether or not we are related.Leo growled in my mind, he had been doing that all day. This time, I didn't hush him because he was right and it was time for me to stop avoiding the truth that was clearly in front of me.I stood up from my seat and allowed my legs to carry me to Ava's room before I could rationalize and change my mind. I didn't bother to knock because this time, I was here for a confrontation. I pushed the door open and stepped inside.Ava was standing by the window, looking out onto the pack grounds. Her silver hair

Ava’s POVThe tension between Xander and I was suffocating as I led him through the dimly lit hallways in the castle. His presence was comforting behind me, I still couldn't believe that he didn't know but something deep in me told me he was telling the truth. Now, he needed to know the truth. There was a deafening silence between us, only the sound of our shoes on the stone floor could be heard between us. I could feel his eyes digging into my back, burning with curiosity and lingering suspicion.I didn't blame him for being suspicious. Now I knew that I needed to be more careful and take note of my surroundings when going about my business.“These are forbidden parts of the castle, how did you find, let alone enter this place?” He said, voice low and cautious.“Forbidden?” I paused and turned to look at him. “A glow led me here.”“Glow?”“Yes, just a trail of golden light.” I replied. “Come on, you need to see this.”We resumed walking and Xander was silent behind me but I sensed hi

Ava's povXander moved fast, he stood in front of me, claws out and a low growl rumbling in his chest. I couldn't see due to his figure blocking my line of sight.“Show yourself.” Xander called out, lowly.A shiver went down my spine in fear. Who was that?“I'm the keeper, Ava.” The voice was right next to her ear, it made her jump in fright. There it was, the glow. It wasn't a trial this time but it had a masculine type body but no face. Xander turned and pushed her behind him once more.Did it read my thoughts?“Yes, I did.” The glow said. This was beginning to freak me out. “Calm down, both of you.” It said softly.“What… are you?” I asked.“The keeper.” It said again. “I was entrusted with guiding this room from people who sought to bring it harm.”“You were the one who led me here the first day, right?” I said, stepping out from behind Xander.“Yes.”“Why?” I asked.“I sensed Aria and knew that the time was drawing closer.” the keeper answered.“Who's Aria?” Xander asked. Ava's povWe pressed forward in silence, everyone trying to keep their emotions in check and eyes peeled. As we got closer to the place where the first war took place I could feel the land speaking to me.It was broken and never allowed to heal. It was corrupt, hollow, scorched and lifeless.I could feel the centuries of history. The pain. The blood that had soaked into the ground during the First Great War.The screams that had rang out through the filled.Ahead of us was the tree that had the main door to the forge. The place where he had built his empire of shadows and death. But before we could take another step then a scent hit us.Blood.Old and fresh at the same time.Xander held up a hand, signaling for everyone to stop. His golden eyes scanned the battlefield, sharp and cautious. I could tell that Leo had taken over because he didn't want to take any chances. And then we saw him.A small body. Unmoving.A young werewolf, no more than fifteen, lay dead on the cold, cursed grou

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN MATE    Chapter 181

Ava's povWe moved forward in silence, our boots pressing into the ashen soil of Ashville’s cursed land. The deeper we ventured, the thicker the air became—dense, humid, tinged with a metallic taste that clung to the back of my throat. But soon enough I noticed that something was wrong.Very wrong.I couldn't quite place what it was.The enemy wasn’t meeting us in open battle. They were watching. Waiting. Hunting. I could feel their eyes on us but I couldn't place where exactly they were.Xander walked ahead, his shoulders tense, his grip on his blade firm. The warriors behind us moved cautiously, scanning every shadow, their ears twitching at every distant sound. The silence was what disturbed me the most. A battlefield should have been alive—full of shouts, the clash of steel, the roar of war.But this? This was like stepping into a graveyard before the bodies had even fallen. What's going on?A shiver crawled up my spine. I kept my magic close, simmering beneath my skin, waiting fo

Ava's povThese chains will not hold me.Never.The shadows wrapped around me like living creatures, chains of darkness slithering over my arms, my throat, my legs—squeezing, burning, consuming. It felt like they were alive, like they were breathing, whispering, coiling into my skin with a predatory hunger.I struggled, yanking against them, but it was like fighting the weight of an anvil. The more I thrashed, the tighter they held me.A cruel chuckle echoed through the darkness."Foolish girl," the General sneered. "Do you think you can fight against your own nature?"This isn't my nature! I wanted to shout but couldn't.I clenched my jaw, refusing to acknowledge the way his words made my stomach twist. I wasn’t one of them. I wasn’t his.Never was and never will be.But the shadows thought otherwise. They hissed in my ear, whispering things I refused to hear.I refused to listen. But my body was betraying me.The cold was sinking deeper, flowing into my veins, making my thoughts slo

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN MATE    Chapter 179

Xander's povThe words from its mouth sent a chill down my spine but I clenched my jaw, refusing to show fear. My grip tightened on my blade as I stepped forward, locking eyes with the towering figure that lurked in the darkness in front of us.The red eyes of the Nyx Wraiths burned like embers in the night. The Hellhounds stalker along at the edges of the trees, low growls reverberating through the battlefield. The Revenants stood unnaturally still, their decayed bodies could be seen due to the flickering torches we had lit behind us.Outside Ashville it was day but in here, Zerathos' corruption had seeped so much into the land that it was night.I could feel the tension in my army—thousands of wolves behind me, armed and ready strike justification waiting for my command. The figure in the darkness stepped forward and shadows seeped it off its body like ink on paper or smoke in the wind.It is as a General. I could tell by the way it carried itself that it wasn't a regular foot soldi

Xander's povThe scent of damp earth, ash and frost clung to the air as we neared Ashville’s border. The heat had lessened slightly due to the change in seasons but it could still be felt slightly. The trees stood tall and lifeless, their branches clawing at the sky like skeletal fingers. The land here was darker, heavier—tainted by Zerathos’ growing influence. But we weren’t alone. As we got over the final hill the sight that waited us knocked the breath out of me.Wolves. Thousands of them. They were stretched across the valley in a vast sea of warriors, their bodies gleaming in the dim morning light. They came from all nine packs, their banners flapping in the wind, colors blending into what looked like a tapestry of unity.I recognized them by their crests— rainville, iron claw, blood Moon, silver claw, storm fang, thornspike, wild heart, night shade and lastly, Ashville.Their Alphas stood at the front of each battalion, their warriors behind them, waiting.Waiting for me.Ava s

Xander's povBy the time we reached our camp, the sky had begun to lighten, the first hints of dawn were peeking above the horizon. The rest of our warriors and allies were already awake, their stance ready with their weapons drawn and a hard expression on their faces.Ava was the first to approach us, her sharp eyes sweeping over me, searching for injuries.“You’re okay,” she murmured, relief flickering in her eyes.I nodded. “The attack was successful. We wiped them out.”She exhaled, glancing at the boy we had captured. “And him? Who's that?”“A survivor.” I locked eyes with her. “He’s going to talk.”Ava studied him for a moment, her expression unreadable. Then she turned back to me. “You should rest.”“There’s no time.” I pulled off my bloodied cloak and tossed it aside. “We move at nightfall.”She frowned. “Xander—”“I’m fine.” My voice was firm, leaving no room for argument.Ava pressed her lips into a thin line in annoyance, but she didn’t push further. Instead, she turned to

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN MATE    Chapter 176

Xander's povThe night was thick with tension, the air cold against my skin as we moved swiftly through the trees. My breathing was steady and controlled while my heart pounded fast in anticipation of what was to come..The rebel camp was close.Kael moved beside me, silent as a shadow, his bow already drawn. Rowan and Vanessa followed closely behind, their weapons glinting under the moonlight. The rest of our warriors fanned out, forming a perimeter to ensure no one escaped. We had the element of surprise. And I intended to use it.***The rebel camp was in a clearing deep in the forest, it was half hidden between fallen logs and makeshift tents. Smoke rose lazily from dying fires and the scent of burning wood, meat and unwashed bodies filled the air. There were at least fifteen of them, maybe more. Some were seated near the fire, speaking in hushed tones, while others patrolled lazily along the edges of their camp. They seemed like a lowly group in the rebel force because they didn'

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN MATE    Chapter 175

Ava's povThe journey to Ashville was long and grueling. The warriors rode in tense silence as the weight of the upcoming battle pressed down on all of us. The further we traveled, the darker the skies became. In the short time since we had last been here, I could tell that a lot had changed.Soon, the sun began to set so we needed to find a place to stop and rest.“We’ll set up camp here,” Xander announced, coming to a stop on his horse. He turned to Kael and Rowan. “Get the warriors settled. We move again at first light.”Kael and Rowan nodded, immediately splitting off to give out orders. The camp was set up quickly—tents were set up, fires were lit and some of the warriors were assigned as patrol. But before we could settle down to rest, we had one more critical task to do.Kaida, Lyra, and I worked together to set up the enchanted wards around the perimeter of our camp. Unlike regular protective spells, these ones were specifically designed to cut off Zerathos' powers from reachi

Ava's povNo one moved.Xander’s muscles were tense, ready to strike, but even he hesitated.Rowan gritted his teeth. “From who?”The Revenant’s lips curled, a grotesque imitation of a smile. “From your future king.”I couldn't even speak due to the shook at what I was witnessing and hearingZerathos. The Revenant raised a clawed hand, black veins pulsing beneath its skin. A scroll appeared in its grasp out of nowhere, the paper looking older than time itself.“You will take this,” it rasped. “Or I will carve it into your bones.”Vanessa snarled, stepping forward. “We could kill you where you stand.”The Revenant turned its head, its gaze locking onto her. “Try.”Shadows wrapped around its form like living creatures, pulsing with darkness and a black flame that made the room impossibly daker.I swallowed hard. This thing—this messenger—was made of darkness. We could fight it, but it would not be an easy battle.Xander reached out, eyes never leaving the Revenant as he took the scroll
