*FIVE YEARS LATER*
"Doctor!" A voice yelled out and my ears straightened up instantly. I turned around and immediately put the stethoscope around my neck before rushing out with the nurses in attendance. A woman who was soaked in blood from her head down to her feet was rushed into the EU (emergency unit). I walked faster and entered alongside them."Doctor, please save my mate." I heard a man cry out behind me. If not for the situation at hand I would have cast a glance at him to see how genuinely concerned he was but time was ticking fast and we could lose the lady. The nurses connected her to the beeping machine and as I wore my gloves, I asked. "What happened?""She hit her head against the wall and attempted to commit suicide but failed." That made my interest keen. She wanted to commit suicide. Why?I shook off my detective thoughts and started working on her. I checked her heartbeat and it was too slow, like someone who was hanging on the tiny thread of life. She was not going to die. I will make sure of that.Since I started working as a doctor, no patient has died in my hands. I made sure that they had a reason to stay alive. To fight to be alive. Because I did. When I was about to die, I fought with everything within me. I was not going to give up like that. Never! I was stronger and I will not go down like that.Lost in my thoughts, this helped me when I was dealing with cases like this, I used my determination to hike theirs up and it helped me to focus, on saving them and making myself proud. The nurses cleaned the injuries and disinfected it.I collected series of medical instruments from her as I checked her for an internal injury. Then I stopped, if at this point she did not wake up... Everyone stared at the dying lady, probably pleading that she would not give up.Much to our relief, the beeping machine which was reading silently suddenly started reading loudly and we all breathed out in relief. The nurses gripped their chests as they began to clear things up. After giving a few instructions to the nurses, I pulled off the gloves and dumped them into the trash can.I walked out and the man instantly walked up to me. His eyes filled with dry tears. "How is she?" He asked me, craning his neck to glance behind me. I blocked his view and pursed my lips."She is fine. Thankfully, no severe harm was caused or else we would have had her to get surgery." I told him, maintaining my professional mode."If you would like, can I ask you a question?" I asked him.He gulped hard, fear suddenly taking over his facial expression. "Y-Yes." He stuttered. My eyes narrowed on him. "She is your mate, right?" I asked to be sure.He gave a slow nod."I was told that she wanted to commit suicide but-""Doctor, she is mentally deranged since she lost her mother. All she kept saying is that she wants to follow her mother and I have been doing my best to make sure she stays alive and I also take good care of her. Once she is fine, I will have her sent to the psychiatric hospital. You don't need to worry." He cut me off and closed the discussion even before I could start which did nothing but spark my suspicion. After casting a long stare at him, I walked past him and some group of women in the corner smiled at me which I returned with a beam of my smile too."Oh, Doctor Laurene. So nice and kind at heart. Do you know when I told her I was feeling some strange movement underneath my feet? She came over to my house and personally massaged them for me." One of them gushed and the others gasped."It is not only you, Sasha. Would you believe she bought me drugs without having to pay for myself?" Another one said. These old women came every week for check-ups and I have gotten close to them, helping them in the best way I could because I was capable of."Do you know that Doctor Laurene is supposed to have signed out but she took it upon herself to attend to that lady that was rushed in here? She stayed up night to check the patients and... She is supposed to be taking some rest." I overheard another set of nurses whisper and I intentionally slowed down my pace to listen properly."I know right? This woman is just too good and pure. Thank goodness, we have her here. Imagine if she had not stood up for me that day when I had mistakenly administered to the wrong drug to the patient, Matron Laize would have had me fired.""I wish to become like her when I grow up.""Oh, c'mon. Aren't you a grown lady already?" She joked and they both ended up bursting out laughing.I could not help the smile that curled at the edge of my lips as I turned to them, making them aware that I heard everything they said. The one who looked up gasped and instantly jerked the second who was still busy laughing. I walked towards them and the crimson red stain on their cheeks and ears did nothing to hide how mushy they felt."Doctor Laurene." They were both shy. They must have been the new recruiters from last year.I chuckled and used my two hands to lift their heads up to meet my eye. "There is no need for you to be shy. I don't bite or do I?" I asked, glancing between the both of them. They glanced at each other and shook their heads."Good. You see you can become that role model everyone looks up to too. Just make sure you never give up. No matter what, fight and keep fighting till you win. Then you will become an epitome of admiration, huh."They nodded and muttered a few 'thank yous before I turned around and left for my office. I pulled off my coat and hurriedly used the disinfectant. Carrying my bag, I signed out and walked out of the hospital building. Getting into my car, my phone beeped. I had put it on DND through my entire night shift. I hated distractions anytime I was working. My eyes narrowed when I saw who the message was from. The Alpha King.'Meet me in my office, it is quite urgent.'- The message read.My brows creased at the message. I was hardly summoned by the Alpha King. In fact, I was the last person that would be called by the Alpha King.I checked the time and contemplated going first. I shook my head. I have missed my kids. My sweet triplet. I needed to see them as soon as possible so my house first.• • • • • • • • •As soon as I packed the car, the door burst open and my triplet ran outside. "Mommy!" They chorused, making me break into a smile as I got out of the car and met them halfway. We did a group hug and I started planting kisses all over them. They did not mind the way I smelled. They were used to the hospital smell already. Even my daughter, Tanya, was already aspiring to be a doctor."Mommy, we missed you!" Rob said, the first of the triplets.I smiled wider as we pulled apart. "I missed you too."I rose to my feet and led them back into the house."You are back," Kenzie said, smiling at me.I nodded. Kenzie was the woman who had accepted me into her life and made me live with her when I was carrying the kids. She had lost her husband and her daughter on the same I was admitted to the hospital after my accident. That accident... An accident that changed the course of my life. It was a story for another day."How have you been? Hope these kids did not stress you?" I asked her, slumping on the couch. She laughed, waving me off. "If they do not, who will then?" She asked which earned a chuckle from me."Mommy, we did our assignment already and Mrs. K helped us with it," Dylan said, pushing himself between Rob and me. He was the clingy son of mine and I liked it."Really? Then what do you say to Mrs. K?"They turned to her and chorused, "Thank you, Mrs. Kenzie. The sweetest granny ever!"It was something I had taught them and it did magic every time because she always ended up making them their favorite cookies. She shook her head knowing their little trick."C'mon, let's go make some cookies." She urged them and they all cheered. I watched them follow her into the kitchen. I rose to my feet and went into my room to freshen up and also change into a better dress.I was soon done with the bath and stood before the mirror, the scar from that accident visible on my left hand. That's why I have worn nothing but a long sleeve. It must be covered. I will not let it scar my image. Not ever. Not now.I picked the casual gown I would be wearing and wore it over my head. I exited the room as soon as I was done. The smell of the cookies filled the air and I sniffed. I paused when I saw the sight before me.Every one of them was covered in flour and more so, the smell of burnt cookies filled everywhere."It was Rob that burnt it!" Tanya argued."No, it is not me!" Rob refused, tamping his feet on the floor. I caught sight of my last child, Dylan, he was sneakily putting some cookies into his pockets. I shook my head and arched a brow at him when he saw me watching him.He grimaced and started returning them to where he was taking them."Now, kids. Enough! Let's eat the cookies before Dylan steals everything."Mrs. K said, pushing them gently out of the kitchen."I will clean up." I offered with a polite smile."No, I will do it. You have been working since last night. I can-""Mrs. K, I will do it." I insisted and went and pushed her to the kids. She muttered a thank you and I returned to the kitchen. I cleaned everything they used and was finally done."What of my cookies?" I asked when I noticed how empty the tray was."Oops!"I scrunched my face in feigned disappointment."Don't worry, mommy. Next time." Tanya tried to pacify me.Dylan rose to his feet and dipped his hand into his pocket. "Take mommy." He offered, extending three cookies to me.I smiled and collected them. "Thank you, Dylan."Robert also came to meet me. He extended his hand to me and I tilted my head to the side, expecting him to say something."Take more, Mommy." He said, not looking at me.I laughed and collected the two that were in his hands and we all turned to Tanya to bring but she just shrugged. "Nothing is with me. I ate them all."We all scoffed at her and I threw the cookies in my hand into my mouth. That afternoon, we played and joked around. I went through their school work and the fact that my kids were doing good made me feel happy. The evening arrived and my mind suddenly picked that I had a pending appointment with the Alpha King. I quickly went to change my dress."Mommy, are you going somewhere?" Dylan was the first to notice that I was changed.I nodded. Mrs. K stepped outside from the kitchen. She had offered to prepare dinner.I looked at her. "I need to meet the Alpha King."She gave me a skeptical look as her face turned wary. I gave her a reassuring smile and said, "I'll be fine."After pecking the kids, I picked an umbrella and walked out, the rain had already turned heavy. I opened it and jogged into my car. His house was not far from mine but because of the rain, I had to use my car.I revved up the car's engine with my heart beating hiking up. I hope whatever it is the Alpha King wants to discuss with me does not make me regret going.LAURENE I got out of the car and ran into the house. Dropping the umbrella outside, I dusted off the dirt from my boots and went in. Emerald, the Alpha King's sister spun to look at me and a smile widened on her lips. "And to what do we owe this visit from our infamous doctor Laurene?" She asked, walking towards me. She was one of my numerous admirers too. I had saved her life when she tried to abort her kid. From what I had heard, the father of her kid did not want kids, probably hated the idea of having a child and she wanted to please him but eventually the kid died and last I heard, they both separated. "I am here to see the Alpha King," I told her. Her smile faded a bit but she soon gathered herself. "He is in his office upstairs." She said, signaling up. She did not need to tell me how to get there because there was a time I had come and gone from the place in the space of a month. I almost started living here. I walked up the stairs and made my way to the office. Knocking
My heels clicked against the tiled floor of the hospital, the hospital smell I had gotten used to hit me in a full blow and I scrunched my nose. "Good morning, Doctor Laurene." The nurses at the desk greeted and I waved at them with a smile. They responded and began whispering amongst themselves, obviously fangirling.I walked towards the hall where meetings were held and to my abrupt shock, the matrons were already gathered there. According to the message that was sent to me, it definitely did not seem like this was going to be a friendly meeting so I braced myself. Pushing the glass door open, I stepped in and their gazes were lifted to me."Good morning," I smiled, taking strides towards them. There was no response from them. Okay, the sign I needed. They watched me like a hawk as I strode towards the only empty seat and sat down, pursing my lips as I glanced around with uncertainty. After a while of silence and batting eyes, the head of the department cleared his throat and turn
LAURENE Three days later, I woke up to see the letter of my transfer in my email. I shook my head as I let out a deep breath. Asher did not tell me it would be this early. I had yet to start packing. I slid down my bed and pulled the curtains apart, the sunlight seeped in and I rolled my shoulders as relief washed through me. I would be leaving this place in the next one week and I did not know how to feel about that. I had gotten so used to this place that I did not think I would be leaving anytime soon. I stepped out of my room and the kids’ laughter echoed in the living room. An instinctive smile curled at the edges of my lips. God knows that all I need to be happy is just to hear them laugh and giggle without care. I paused the entrance to the living room and watched them as they played with their toys and Mrs. K placed a plate of cake before them. I shook my head as I came out of my hiding place. “You are definitely going to spoil these kids at the rate you baking, Mrs
LAURENE It only took little to no convincing for me to tell the kids and surprisingly they accepted it quite well. Even more than I imagined them to. I knew they liked this apartment but Mommy gotta move. I am sure Dozell would be happy with the way I was transferred. It must have brought him so much joy to finally see someone who was against his principles leave. I just pitied the patients. I have had Asher try to arrange some sort of program where free treatment could be advocated. He told me that it was not an easy task but it was something he could do. I don't know how to thank him enough for what he has been doing for me so far. Our loads have been fully packed and Asher has been in contact with the Alpha of the pack that I was to be arriving today. Looking back at the apartment where I have lived for the past five years, a pinch jeered at my heart. I felt like I was leaving the place that had kept me hidden from the outside world for so long. Fear engulfed me like
LAURENEOuch! I gripped my head as I slowly squinted my eyes open, trying to adjust to the dim light of wherever I was. I let out a painful groan as I sat up, leaning against the wall and taking in my surroundings with hazy eyes.Where was I?I closed my eyes once more, trying to recollect what happened and why I was in a smelly prison. My head was banging so bad and I could hardly think straight. “Mommy!” Dylan’s voice called out and I jerked to the right, wincing at the sudden impact of the action. They were just across me and my eyes went wide as everything came rushing back. I rushed forward, held back by the locked gates. Kamara was in there with them, clinging them to herself like she was trying to protect them from the horror of this situation.“Dylan!” I gripped the iron gates, watching them from afar. My chest heaved with rapid breaths as I glanced around frantically. “Anyone there?!” I yelled out, staring at the dark entrance but no sound was made.“Mommy!” Tanya called
RAYMOND "What was the conflict about?" I asked my Beta as we approached my office in the packhouse. I had just finished speaking to some business clients and also went to visit my father. I closed my eyes tight at the thought of that man and quickly took my mind off him. The Alpha King, Asher, already promised to send someone capable to help us with the situation. I’d hope so. Emphasis on someone capable. "The new doctor that came. the guards had mistakenly attacked them." He informed me. I halted to a pause. "What? attacked?" I asked, my brows scrunched up together. "Yes, but it has been sorted out. I already gave her a space to stay and she has been taken care of alongside her kids." He quickly added. My brows etched together at that. "Kids? She is married?" Something passed between his eyes but he just simply responded, "It didn't appear to me like that." I nodded, pushing the door to my office open and tugging at my tie. "Any news from Kieran yet?" He shook
SHANTELLE/LAURENE I have not sensed anything unusual in the pack since I came. Although everything seemed to be organized, I knew it was just a camouflage. If I deduct based on what Asher told me about the pack, he said they were suffering from the breakout of an illness but I didn't see anything close to that. Could it be some sort of trap? For me to come here? I shook my head, dismissing the thought. Raymond does not even know that I still exist. In fact, he must have forgotten me. If his Beta, Zonal, could still recognize me. Then I must avoid meeting him at all costs. “Mommy! Where are we?” Dylan asked me. I looked down at him where he stood, holding my hand. His eyes reminded me fully of Raymond’s greyish eyes. I smiled, looking forward. “At your…” I trailed off, catching myself before I let my thoughts out. “Huh, mommy?” I glanced at him, clearing my throat. “Erm…” I crouched down to his level. “I was told to come here for work so you should try to socialize y

There were lots of workloads and Zonal was going around the smaller packs in the north to see whose dead body that was. I closed my eyes briefly, feeling fatigue searing through me but I needed to finish this up and then move to go through the history of the pack. Maybe I could find something related to the plague. My father had indicated that I needed to look into it. Ever since he came down with the illness, he has been saying lots of things that didn't make sense to me. At least, they did to him. For years now, I have been looking to see if there was something more to the plague but I have not found anything yet. It was as if it just appeared and disappeared which was quite crazy. The cause of the plague just seemed to have disappeared and it was starting to drive me crazy! Whosoever did this was sure very good at it. Letting out a deep sigh, I pinched the bridge of my nostrils.
The quiet hum of the office enveloped Jessica as she worked diligently at her desk. The papers strewn before her detailed the intricacies of her latest case, but her focus faltered as her mind wandered. The events of the last few days had been overwhelming, to say the least. The precinct was still reeling from the chaos surrounding Angela's arrest, and tension hung in the air like an oppressive fog. Jessica leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples as a faint headache began to pulse. She was no stranger to pressure, but something about this situation felt more complex than usual, as though there were pieces to the puzzle she hadn’t yet discovered. A sharp knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. She straightened her posture, masking her fatigue with a professional demeanor. "Come in," she called, her voice steady. The door creaked open, and Bishop stepped inside. He moved with the calculated confidence of someone who always knew more than he let on. His expression
---Shantelle lay motionless on the infirmary bed, her pale skin a stark contrast to the crisp white sheets that surrounded her. The scratch on her arm, which initially seemed superficial, had begun to fester, the redness spreading ominously. Her breathing was shallow, and beads of sweat clung to her forehead despite the room being cool. Raymond stood at the edge of the bed, his fists clenched and his jaw tight. He hated this feeling of helplessness. Shantelle, who was usually so full of life and strength, now looked frail, vulnerable. It didn’t sit right with him. “Why isn’t anyone doing anything?” he muttered under his breath, his frustration bubbling to the surface. Dr. Thompson and Dr. Keiran, the senior clinicians, stood a few feet away, their faces grim as they reviewed Shantelle’s chart. The scratch, initially dismissed as minor, had escalated into something far more sinister. Infection had set in rapidly, and her condition was deteriorating by the hour. “She’s not gett
Here’s a detailed narrative exploring Shantelle’s point of view in this dramatic situation: ---Shantelle had always prided herself on her ability to stay calm under pressure. Working in a high-stakes mental health facility had taught her to manage crises with a steady hand. But this? This felt different. The halls of the facility were eerily quiet, save for the occasional shuffling of a nurse or the low hum of machinery. Dr. Thompson and Dr. Keiran, the senior clinicians, had stepped out for an important meeting, leaving her as the most experienced member of the staff on the floor. Her shift had started smoothly enough—routine check-ins with patients, reviewing treatment plans, and the usual paperwork that seemed endless. She’d just settled at her desk, taking a moment to sip her lukewarm coffee, when the first sounds of distress pierced the calm. It started as a low growl, almost imperceptible, but it grew quickly—a feral sound that sent chills down her spine. Shantelle set he
-WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE KIDS?!- CHRISI sent the message to her, my hands trembling in rage as I continued to stare at the message from an unknown source. Tuning out Joanna’s happy shrieks as she updated her Insta, I waited for Adele’s response but she was not returning one. I dialed her phone and she didn't answer it. How dare she do something like that?Truly, I was aware of the pregnancy test result and I thought it was not true but with this, it was and Adele has some explanation to do. Shock morphed Adele’s face as she stared gobsmacked at the message. Mary kept calling her repeatedly but she didn't respond. Mary assumed she was not hearing her and she killed the call. How did Chris find out about the kids? Her heart hammered against her chest as she didn't know what to do. Just then her phone’s ringing tone pierced through the air and she flinched hard. It was a contact that was not saved on her phone so she knew it was Chris who was calling her. What does she say
I stared at the monitor before me, unable to make out what the profiles were indicating. The fact that all of them were purely doing well until they got infected by this plague, and everything went awry. Shantelle had warned me not to dig too deep into the data—her words echoed in my head like a persistent whisper, "Sometimes knowing doesn’t save us. It binds us." But I couldn’t stop. Each profile represented a life—a pack member whose existence had shifted from vibrant to fragile in mere days. The readings were erratic, the biomarkers fluctuating as though the disease wasn't just attacking the body but something deeper, something primal.Laurene leaned over my shoulder, her eyes scanning the same chaotic patterns. “It’s not just them,” she muttered under her breath. “It’s us.” I turned to her, confused. “What do you mean? We’re not infected.” “Not yet,” she replied, her voice colder than I expected. Her gaze met mine, steady and unnerving. “But this plague… it’s not natural. It’s
