I wait for the door to close behind him so that I can enter the flat by myself. That's when I get out of bed, find a pair of tennis shoes that fit me terribly, cram my feet into them, and go to the bathroom.

My heart is racing the entire time I'm climbing out the window and descending the fire exit, which take only a few seconds each.

I take off running the instant I reach the bottom.

FINN

In the light of a fresh day, the devastation is tenfold worse.

My gaze sweeps across the bar that we invested thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the best we could. You wouldn't owe the kind of individuals from whom we borrowed the money if it hadn't succeeded, right? You would have had to repay it plus interest.

And just like that, it's all gone.

Not a single bottle made it. The majority of the tables and chairs need to be changed out. The DJ zone, too? The likelihood of salvaging some of the equipment is not good, but it is still possible.

As I'm about to start over, assuming that Jade still sleeps in one of the first apartments I tried, I see a man approaching me through the glass door. He is carrying a black radio and is dressed in grey short sleeves and jeans.Guards!.B*tch.An apartment like this, all glass and steel, would naturally have security. The only person to answer the buzzer is exactly who had to have called him and told him about me.I stab at the keypad faster as he gets closer, mentally yelling at Jade to wake up from whatever whisky hangover he must be suffering.I begin to back away as the glass door opens, and he is touching a silver button next to it."What are you doing, hey?""I came here to see a friend."His gaze tightens. "Whom?"My eyes dart to the little circular speaker situated directly beneath the keypad. "Jade."Which flat number is it?Since I don't know how to respond to him, I take an additional step back in case he tries to seize me."What is the question I asked you?"Who the fuck i

AMANDATaking a deep breath, I hold it for three seconds before letting go and raising my hand.I bang my knuckles on the metal door. Three sharp taps that hurt like hell on my wrist. After that, I wait with my arms by my sides as stress keeps me from moving. My face gets blown into my hair by an unexpected gust of wind. I lift my arm and tuck the flyaways behind my ear.My eyes are drawn away from the road by the metallic clang of a lock, and I'm grateful that it remains as deserted as it was just a few seconds ago. The door is made of black steel and swings open. I control my breathing.Peering down at me is a dark-haired man who must be a foot taller than me, with huge, hefty muscles barely covered by his soiled black shirt. His eyes dart over my right shoulder, as though he thinks I'm going to find someone.Finn.I informed him, "I'm alone," even if it wasn't necessary. He looks back at me with an emerald stare, yet he remains silent. Similar to Jade, I try to see the wolf in him,

"Today."I quickly turn to look to my right and see Finn resting against a bar corner, spilling the contents of an amber drink from one of the few glasses that has survived. I don't think of him as the kind to drink during the day. He seems too serious and solemn for that. However, given what transpired, I believe now is the right moment for a morning drink. He asks, "Why are you here?"Why does it seem like he's talking about something other than today? He drops the empty glass on the bar next to a half-empty decanter, and I have to push myself to look him in the eye. "I realize I'm not entitled to much because I only worked a few hours, but—""Hold here."I watch him as he stalks across the floor, avoiding the many obstructions with a level of elegance that I could never match. He must be the one responsible for the little piles of shattered tables and chair parts, but if he's doing this all by himself, he's going to have a busy day.He doesn't make me wait very long, which would ha

Finn is acting in this manner. He's trying to stop his shift, but it's not succeeding based on the loud growls coming from his chest and the tremors shaking his body. Why is he unable to quit shifting?"Go now." The voice seems inhumane, so deep that I can hardly understand what it's saying. After that, I do.I turn on my heel and dash for the door. A roaring, angry wolf growls behind me.I turn my head abruptly. His skin is covered in white fur, and his torn garments are strewn all over the place. Two moments. He turned into a wolf in less than two seconds at most.I bump into something, bounce off of it, and feel like I'm being held tightly.Whipping my head back to face front, I look up at Jade, who is wearing only sweatpants. That man with the thick lids and the whisky hangover is long gone. While I take in the deep, ragged claw lines severing Jade's pale honey skin, my voice is so low it's nearly a whisper. He gives me a quick glance, but I can't take my eyes off his ripped and bleeding skin."After I got Finn into his office, I had to go back to being human."I have to work hard to slow down my breathing since it's too rapid. "Why?"It's a strange phenomenon, but hands are useful for closing doors.I look up from his back to meet his eyes, drawn by the dark humour in his voice. Jade growls and takes a long breath. "Fuck, you smell ripe." His hand slides under my sweatpants, and I don't even consider not opening my thighs to receive it.Never before have I been happier to not be wearing pants than when a thick digit touches me and makes me sigh in hunger. He says, "You're fucking drenched," against my neck. His words are so hot that I wiggle towards him in an attempt to get him to relieve the pressure that is developing between my legs."Jade, please.""You didn't say what it is you want."I resist him, but he keeps me still. "You know.""Say it.""Jade, could you just—" I groan as my muscles tense tightly around the finger he pokes into my body. "Oh god."There's no resistance, nothing at all; my body just gives way and invites him in.Jade pulls his finger free, cursing. I can feel the heat pouring from his order. Or perhaps it's the way his eyes feel on me. He disappears for a little moment before reappearing to wipe a towel between my knees, down my back, and over the curvature of my ass. With one arm wrapped around my midsection as though he knows I need assistance getting up, he presses his mouth to the back of my head and remains there, caressing my sensitive skin and making me burn all over again."You're being very..." He sweeps the towel up and over my breasts, and I take a big intake. "Thorough."I sense a smile forming on his lips. "Is that you saying you want me to stop, angel eyes?"A little smile spies itself on my mind. "Don't you dare?"This girl—who is she? She doesn't sound at all like Amanda, so I ask myself."Well, perhaps you should—" A savage snarl stops him in his tracks. My entire body tenses up. Gabriel. "And her reply?"Dan gulps down so forcefully that I can see the movement in his throat. "Storytelling."I mirror him, angling my head back and crossing my arms across my chest. "However, you chose not to inform her about us, as she is too naive to have ever experienced the kind of relationship we desire."Not even that she could say she desired me. I believe this will be her first experience because of the purity in her eyes, however, perhaps some of that stems from whatever was done to her.For her, that will b

The government would eliminate them all if people were aware of them and what they were capable of.When Darius informed me that certain disparities are so great that people would turn against you if they understood what they were, I felt like he was exaggerating. He'd discovered me after I'd snuck down the stairs to peer through the bannisters at the TV."But the men take too long to fall down and sometimes they grab the wrong place on their front, so they can't be dead." I let out a sigh.As he carried me back up to bed, he chuckled. "Waiting too long to fall, huh?" How long have you been looking?"I denied ever seeing anything. He snorted at my obvious deception, kissed the top of my head, put me into bed, and then told me a tale."You sound like you might be smiling, angel," Jade adds, restoring my attention to the present."Well, I'm not," I tell myself. "You're just hearing things."He sighs once more, brings me in closer, and inhales. If this surgeon is still sniffing about Amanda once Dan is better, it will be the last thing he does."You're quiet," Finn remarks as we come to a halt in front of the vending machine, releasing my arm."Please tell me you're not working out how to kill the doctor and get away with it."I cast a casual glance at the machine. I'm not interested in crappy coffee or tea. My eyes widen when I see peppermint tea.Amanda could use one of them. Also, sleep. She appeared weary, with black bags under her eyes. Still lovely, but ready to go."I'm thinking," I say quietly. The second Amanda turns her back, she plans on tearing the good surgeon apart.Finn rummages in his pocket with his hand. "I repeat myself. Please don't tell me you're plotting the doctor's demise."I cast a peek across at him. He must have just realised that the only things we stopped to get before following the ambulance to the hospital were his clothing and vehicle keys. I examine him again, unsure if I should believe that smile—or him. "That you were a decent guy in spite of it."He laughs from the bottom of his heart, throwing his head back. All unaffected and... genuine. It makes me want to laugh along with him just to see how it feels. "I will most definitely need to have words with Olivia."I cock my head, forgetting about the desire to scream for Jade to return. "Words? Is that a polite way of saying—""No euphemism." He wriggles his fingers again as if requesting permission. After a little moment, I nod once, and he takes a step forward. He's so near that the tip of my nose brushes against his chest as my knees kiss his thighs. I can't help but inhale his aroma. He smells better than I'd imagine a surgeon to smell just after surgery. Clean, with a woodsy note that might nearly be cologne."While one or two doctors in this hospital have married nurses, I have no plans for the lovely Olivia," he adds as he begins his inspection. How on earth did

"Despite its miraculous abilities, the heart is a delicate thing." There's a reason we have ribs to defend ourselves." He lowers his voice and frowns. "I know what injured your guy and brought him here. He was fortunate to have survived."Most individuals would not survive a wolf attack, in my opinion.Harley pauses for a beat as if waiting for an explanation. Nobody offers one. When he doesn't receive one, he keeps going. "With all of the damage we discovered in surgery, his recovery will be a long process, and there will be complications." I'm here to go over some of the upcoming events in the following days, weeks, and months."My fingers tighten in Jade's sweatpants as all my anxiety returns. "Months?""His heart stopped on the operating table, Jane." He stops and looks at her. "Twice."My mouth is parched. "However, you were able to save him?"Harley gives a single nod. "We have a great team in this hospital.""What complications can we anticipate?" Jade asks, less hostilely than

A truly kind person. Someone who refused to assist me because he desired something in return. But he did it because he could. He did exactly that. And he paid with his life.I try again, clearing my throat. "I believe he wanted to make Dan suffer as much as he wanted to make me suffer." He cut Dan's breast open before leaping out the upstairs window."But not before he murmured the eight words into my ear that will haunt me for the rest of my life."You belong to no one but me, Amanda."Finn gives a blink. We tripped over each other to follow as they rushed him out of the attic, the house, and finally into a flashing ambulance waiting outside.“Sorry, no room,” they said when we moved to follow.None of us dared argue. Not when Dan’s heart could stop again any second. So we let the bland-faced EMTs who’d shocked Dan’s heart into beating call out a hasty direction for the hospital, slam the door shut, and then they were just…gone.A hand closes high on my right arm.I startle, whipping my head that way."Angel?” Jade’s gray eyes search my face as I search his.Dan once said he looked like a brawler, and he does. I study him, taking my time. Shaved dark hair. Intent gray eyes which dare you to look away first. A nose with a tiny bump on the slope from a break that didn’t heal right. His raw strength makes me feel stronger in a way that shouldn’t make sense, yet it does.“He’s a fighter. Like you. Like all of us. "What makes breathing so important?" I inquire, disregarding the aching in my left arm. It's only been a minute, yet I'm already trying to stay up."You could have lined up the most perfect shot in the world, but what if you get excited and your breathing changes?"I thought for a moment, but I didn't have a response for him. "No."He takes two deep, leisurely breaths. But his third breath is a bit faster, and the cannon slips to the left by about half an inch. "Did you notice that?"I nod. "Breathing made you move.""Move it just enough to throw off your shot." With a body shot, you can get away with it, but with a headshot, you can miss it entirely. "Calm and control will save the day here.""Are you not angry?" I inquire, intrigued by this aspect of Dan. I had no clue he knew how to shoot, much alone be so enthusiastic about it."There is a time for rage." Isn't it when you have a pistol in your hand?" He softly presses down on my finger. "This is exactly how it should feel. Breath
